All they want to do is continue to claim how bad it was even though the republicans who helped write the immigration bill were appointed by the Republicans. They tend to be the "It's a good idea until it isn't" crowd. They thought the idea of a president using executive orders to try and fix immigration was wrong..... when Obama was president. Then once trump became president and now Biden, they think our laws should be set in the style of a monarchy..... The Republican excuse for killing a new immigration bill is peak hypocrisy House Republicans are throwing up their hands and telling Biden to fix immigration on his own. That contradicts the GOP's past claims about executive power. A decade ago, the conservative movement seemed up in arms over the idea of a president — at that time, President Barack Obama — essentially usurping immigration authority from Congress. The fact that Obama issued executive orders (in lieu of congressional action) to resolve some of the issues plaguing the U.S. immigration system was framed, by many conservatives, as dangerous overreach. Now, far-right Republicans are rejecting a new bipartisan immigration bill devised in the Senate and framing executive action, perhaps under a potential Donald Trump presidency, as the only way the United States’ immigration issues will get resolved. Suddenly, their belief in Congress’ authority and responsibility when it comes to this matter has melted away. House GOP leadership released a statement Monday claiming the proposed bill won't see a vote in the House because President Joe Biden "has refused to utilize his broad executive authority" to stem immigration. It's a talking point we've heard a lot from Republicans over the last week — and one deeply inconsistent with their previous claims. “The only way we’re gonna fix the border is to have a new president,” Rep. Carlos Giménez said Sunday on Fox News. The Florida Republican claimed, “President Biden can control the border today if he wanted to — he doesn’t need any legislation from Congress to do so.” And, he added, "I think it’s a mistake for us in Congress to say, 'Hey, we can help fix this.'" Today's "do-nothing Congress" is living up to its name under GOP control. Rep. Troy Nehls of Texas essentially echoed Giménez, and repeated his previous admission that he has political reasons for wanting to thwart a potential legislative win for Biden. “Congress doesn’t have to do anything to secure our southern border and fix it,” Nehls claimed in footage obtained by Rolling Stone. “Why would I help Joe Biden improve his dismal 33 percent [approval rating] when he can fix the border and secure it on his own? He can do it on his own through executive order,” Nehls said. Nehls touted the slew of executive orders that then-President Donald Trump signed regarding immigration, but, as Rolling Stone noted, many of those were deemed unconstitutional. Tactically, this feigned political impotence seems like an obvious ploy to help Trump’s electoral chances this November. In January, after House Speaker Mike Johnson claimed now is “not the time for comprehensive immigration reform,” I wrote of my belief that Republicans want to incite and highlight chaos along the southern border with hopes of framing Trump as the only one who can fix it. And Trump has done his part to push this idea by publicly railing against the immigration deal and praising Johnson for opposing it. Johnson, who's said he and Trump speak frequently about immigration reform, told NBC News' Kristen Welker on Sunday that he — not Trump — is "calling the shots" when it comes to Republicans' stance on border legislation, a laughable notion in today's MAGA GOP. But Johnson, Nehls and Giménez are showing us a lot with their feigned haplessness. House Republicans seem to think that if voters witness chaos at the border and a Congress seemingly incapable of passing laws to remedy that chaos, they will be more open to electing Trump, who’s vowed to use dictatorial means to curtail migration on "day one." GOPers who are in Congress right now and could take action on immigration are willingly ceding that power in order to frame Trump as a some kind of future savior. But that just underscores how today’s Republican Party exists for few reasons other than propping up Donald Trump. https://www.msnbc.com/the-reidout/reidout-blog/house-republicans-biden-immigration-bill-rcna137288Don't let them fool you about why they refused to pass a comprehensive immigration bill. Some of them actually said the part they were supposed to keep quiet out loud. The reason they refused to do their job is because it might have helped Joe Biden.

I'm really curious about some of the specifics. I'm assuming the language in that link is specific to illegal crossings (sometimes the wording seems to be more general and could include legal crossings... as someone who used to cross this border each day, I may be reading too much into this).
We all know that this intended to address the southern border, but does it also apply to northern border and folks coming in from overseas illegally?
What's summarized in that link sounds pretty good to me. I can't imaging being so opposed to what's laid out there to not even want to discuss it. You cool with me moving this to "The Wall" thread? I'll respond to it there...

Doesn't matter.
If the user who posted it says he made it up, the judge will say he should be believed at face value.
If the user says it's true, the judge will say there's no reason to believe him.
If the user has audio of the juror, the judge will say there's possibility of a deepfake.
If the user says he has witnesses, the judge will write a metaphorical poem about "eyes and ears and how they've been wrong for years" and move along to sentencing.

Merchan, who presided over Trump’s recently concluded hush money trial, did not indicate whether the post — which is no longer visible on Facebook — appeared legitimate or may have been the result of a prank. Media efforts to locate the poster indicated that the post likely came from an account associated with someone who appears to be a regular troll of the New York court system’s social media pages. https://www.yahoo.com/news/judge-trump-hush-money-trial-214311994.html

Like Washington DC officers after Jan 6???? According to the man they plan to vote for as president the people convicted on more than 500 counts of assaulting police officers are political hostages and deserve to be pardoned. Now suddenly they're outraged about respecting police officers? Who didn't see that one coming? Not that any of that has to do with the hush money trial. Of course anything to divert attention away from the fact trump was convicted on 34 felony counts I suppose.

There's another thread for this stuff. I was hoping Fate and I were about to have a productive debate about Trump and this stuff clogs it up.

Heard this morning on the way to work, as part of trumps deal as a convicted felon-trump is not allowed to associate with anyone else convicted of a felony- that pretty much wipes out everyone he associated with on the 2020 campaign

Safe to assume you have an IV labeled MSNBC? https://www.factcheck.org/2021/11/how-many-died-as-a-result-of-capitol-riot/I believe the guy that had a stroke after he was physically assaulted and hit with chemical spray was also considered a line-of-duy death. Update, March 21, 2022: On March 7, the District of Columbia’s Police and Firefighters’ Retirement and Relief Board declared that Metropolitan Police Officer Jeffrey Smith’s suicide in the days after the Jan. 6 riot was a line-of-duty death. The board concluded “that Officer Smith sustained a personal injury on January 6, 2021, while performing his duties and that his injury was the sole and direct cause of his death.” As a result, Smith’s widow, Erin Smith, will receive an annuity equal to 100% of her husband’s salary. I generally enjoy debating/discussing with you, but trivializing deaths of police officers is not ok. It's also hypocritical to throw temper tantrums over thin blue line flags and then put out the response quoted above.

It is truly amazing the GOP wants to sweep Jan 6th under the carpet. Wants everyone to believe it didn't happen.
Says it was a tourist visit. trump calls the convicted criminals "unbelievable patriots." Plans to pardon them if elected.
Now he joins them as a convicted criminal.
It is astounding that people don't see who and what trump is; unbelievable really.
One of the worst days in American history. A sitting president who lost the election even after recounts and 60 court cases proved he lost. He then leads an insurrection to stop the peaceful transfer of power. Something no other president in history has done. He continues has assault on the justice system and the Constitution by leading a fake electors scheme to overturn the election. A democracy is for the people and by the people and trump tries to invalidate all those votes cast against him. He even tries to coerce a Republican Secretary of State to give him Georgia.
And the blinded want to call others bananas and libtards?
At least we bananas can spot a criminal when we see one. Banana Republics are run by dictators who control fake elections. It only counts if "I" win.
trump wants to dissolve the constitution and have full control to go after his political opponents. History has other examples of rulers like that.
So turn your back on this country and support a criminal willing to do anything to gain power and keep it. Someone who will surround himself with loyalists willing to do his bidding. Look in the mirror and continue to lie about what is crystal clear.

I'm not trying to trivialize the death either, but something seems a bit off with that quoted statement. "Sole and direct cause" of a suicide days later? Primary contributing factor, sure, but that reads like someone wanting to deflect attention away from their own culpability. I.e, they denied his claim, and "now" they're trying to cover their behinds/avoid a wrongful death suit. But then frequently dealing with the VA probably influences my opinion on the topic.

They took the only path that was available to them to get to the right decision.

FWIW, the link I quoted kinda tried to frame all that as a method to get around an antiquated rule that would've prevented officers' families from getting proper benefits related to their deaths. They took the only path that was available to them to get to the right decision. Tried to frame it, Aye. It sounds like the "antiquated" rule is designed to avoid payouts. If it was really about getting "to the right decision(s)," they'd change the rule. It still feels like they were afraid of bad publicity/lawsuits. Of course, they'd try to PR it into something positive. But, again, I'm a cynic. See enough "sausage getting made," and it can be hard not to be.

I listened to Paul Ryan today on why he could Not vote for trump.
I am paraphrasing. When you are sworn into public office you take an oath to the Constitution.
If you put yourself above that Oath. You are unfit for the office.
Ironic that the "Oath Keepers" call themselves that name because the guy they supported violated that Oath.
Pretty simple isn't it?

In the rough: Felony convictions could cost Trump liquor licenses at 3 New Jersey golf courses New Jersey’s attorney general’s office is looking into whether Donald Trump’s recent felony convictions in New York make him ineligible to hold liquor licenses at his three New Jersey golf courses ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- New Jersey's attorney general's office is looking into whether Donald Trump's recent felony convictions in New York make him ineligible to hold liquor licenses at his three New Jersey golf courses. A spokeswoman for the office said Monday that it is reviewing whether Trump's conviction on 34 felony counts involving payment of hush money to a porn star and falsifying business records in an attempt to hide it should impact the former president's continued ability to hold liquor licenses. State law prohibits anyone from holding a liquor licenses who has been convicted of a crime “involving moral turpitude.” The New Jersey Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control, which is part of the attorney general's office, “is reviewing the impact of President Trump’s conviction on the above referenced licenses, and declines further comment at this time,” a spokeswoman for the office said in an email Monday. Part of what goes into that calculation is a requirement that “a person must have a reputable character and would be expected to operate the licensed business in a reputable manner,'' according to the division. Its handbook goes into further detail, saying, “the term `moral turpitude' denotes a serious crime from the viewpoint of society in general and usually contains elements of dishonesty, fraud or depravity.” Trump owns golf courses in Bedminster, Colts Neck and Pine Hill in New Jersey, each of which has an active liquor license. He no longer owns any casinos in Atlantic City, where his former company, Trump Entertainment Resorts, once operated three. Messages left Monday with Trump's presidential campaign, as well as with The Trump Organization, the former president's company, were not immediately returned. Trump is scheduled to be sentenced in the New York case on July 11, shortly before he is to receive the Republican nomination for president in the November general election. https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/rough-felony-convictions-cost-trump-liquor-licenses-3-110999622

Did Trump Just Accidentally Admit to Another Felony? Donald Trump may have just implicated himself in another crime in his probation interview. Weeks after he was convicted of 34 felony counts in his hush-money trial, Donald Trump confessed to having a gun—which would be illegal with his felony conviction. New York City Department of Probation officials questioned the convicted felon and Republican presidential nominee Tuesday in a presentencing interview, and part of the discussion concerned a gun registered to him in the state. Under federal law, convicted felons are not allowed to have guns or ammunition. A city official told CNN that Trump mentioned a gun of his in Florida, possibly one of the three firearms listed on his New York City concealed weapons permit. Trump turned over two of his three licensed guns to the New York Police Department on March 31, 2023, before he was arrested for paying hush money to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. The third gun was supposed to be “lawfully moved to Florida.” Palm Beach police told CNN that they weren’t aware of any gun Trump owned and that he hadn’t submitted one to them since his felony conviction. After his 2023 hush-money arrest, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office suspended Trump’s gun license, and with his conviction, his license will be revoked, city police told CNN. A New York official said the information on the third gun “will be referred to local authorities in Florida to take whatever steps are necessary.” It’s ironic that Trump may be in trouble for illegally having a gun weeks after his conviction at the same time that President Biden’s son, Hunter, was convicted on federal gun charges. But Trump doesn’t like to give the authorities what he believes is his property, even when the law says otherwise. Just look at the classified documents he tried to hoard at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. He might be storing his gun not too far away. https://newrepublic.com/post/182623/did-trump-admit-another-felony-probabation-interview
