The NFL is so quarterback centric.

Organizations, coaches, players, and fans all know if you have a true franchise quarterback you have an opportunity to build a consistent winner.

Yet it is extremely hard to find that guy. It is a hard position to play at the highest level.

CJ Stroud even though it is early looks like a guy who will be a true franchise quarterback. Mahomes is the standard.

Those types are so hard to land. You can have the first pick and it guarantees you nothing.

You can have the last pick and get Brock Purdy.

I want to be a fan of a great Cleveland Browns quarterback and I am running out of time.

I remember Rick Ankiel a pitcher for my Cardinals who all of a sudden couldn’t throw a strike and some fielders who couldn’t throw to first base anymore. Maybe it’s not the same thing but I did think of it.

Go back and watch footage of Watson when he was with Houston (there are a lot of them out there) If you notice he is going to his first read most of the time, once in a while he goes to his second read, but you don't notice him looking for his 3rd or 4th read. You will also notice he had guys WIDE open. That's not something your seeing in Cleveland either due to the play calling /route trees we are using, or just that our WR lack speed,or the ability to get seperation. Some of y'all that can break down plays better than I can but that's what I see.

If Buzbee indeed gets this girl to talk to the NFL which he’s saying is going to happen, DW could be suspended, and thus dropped for no $, sooner than I thought. Of course it’s a negotiation tactic. He wants DW to settle with the lure of an NDA before she talks to the NFL. If the NFL doesn’t talk to her, they basically can’t suspend him because they can’t confirm the story or that she was known before the contract. Is DW dumb enough to not settle? Well, we know he’s been that dumb in the past. It just comes down to if he’s learned anything.

There’s a few scenarios here and a positive outcome is about the least likely. There is so much bad juju right now, just super off vibes. If he and the team aren’t competitive this weekend, this has the makings of spiral. I’m not in the building so I don’t know but from the outside it smells like a lot of dead fish.

IIRC too, a lot of Watson's big plays in Houston were improvisational and him escaping the pocket, hitting open WRs on the run

He's not nearly as elusive now either

He settled with 20 out of 24 of them to date as far as I know.

Then why didn’t our FO see this before we traded for him? Were they that desperate to get rid of Baker that they didn’t determine what kind of QB DW was and how he would fit here?

I think the season where Baker was injured, played through it, didn't play well, OBJ had the drama ... there was a lot of conflict behind the scenes and all parties needed to separate

Unfortunately, Baker wasn't going to work here anymore

I agree with that. Baker was done here. It looks like our FO acted in desperation. I hope KS and the staff can find some way of salvaging DW.

At some point I think people need to come to the realization that it will take watson to salvage himself. Stefanski has gotten a lot out of what people claim to be much lesser QB's. One simply needs to look back at Flacco from last season to see that. That's a stromg indication that this is about watson and not Stefanski.

And he’ll settle this one as well. Will he do it early or later, that’s the question. With the last batch he waited until it almost couldn’t get worse. I suspect the browns thought he’d do the smart thing and settle as quickly as possible, especially as they were giving him what was then the biggest contract ever. But no.

I said this a bunch back then, that the browns’ biggest error was not having an agreement with him about how he would deal with the problem. They just assumed he’d be smart about it. And was so so so dumb in how he handled it. Now he has the chance to settle and also get the NDA which probably saves him $92m. Or… he can settle later and be a toxic free agent. Decisions decisions.

That's my thing too ... KS has gotten a lot out of Brissett, Walker, DTR, etc ... and yet Watson looks THIS bad with him? That's on Watson IMO

I believe that though your take might have some merit, Stefanski deserves equal blame because of the type of QB his system requires. JMHO, neither Mayfield nor Watson play with the skillset that a Stefanski offense requires. Flacco fit that mold like a glove and Brissett was about as close as a person could get but Watson and Mayfield are risk takers who are always looking for the big play - not compatible with a run first Stefanski offense. Great coaches like Reid adjust their offense to the skillset of the player - the Stefanski's of the world require the QB to fit - Watson nor Mayfield fit that mold.

I disagree.

If you watch the tape of Baker, Jacoby, Flacco, and even DTR the plays were designed to do what the qb's did best.

Baker because of his size needed throwing lanes. KS developed plays to create those lanes. Play action fakes and roll outs to either side with corresponding over under
route trees.

Every quarterback KS has coached prior to DW had their best performances under KS. Hell that was proven to the max last year.

DW had plays right in front of him. His QB rating was 9 last in the NFL. That is not the fault of KS.

Dorsey was brought in because of his experience with mobile quarterbacks Josh Allen and Cam Newton. DW has been involved in developing the offense.

You can lead a horse to water. You can't make them drink.

DW is his own problem watch the Dallas tape closely. Past twenty yards DW was not even close with his throws. In addition to being late on reading the defense.

You know, I see people posting this but maybe I am misunderstanding what that means. It certainly brings up some questions for me.

The Browns are not currently running a "run first system". With Chubb it only makes sense for your O to use the run combined with the pass to make the opposition account for both threats in order to loosen up the opposing D for the passing game to be easier. I'm not sure how forcing the opposing D to focus on the run makes it more difficult to pass the ball. And how would that in any way impact the QB's ability to execute when he does throw the ball?

In the Cowboys game alone the Browns rushed the ball 19 times and passed the ball 45 times. According to what you indicated that should have fit right into what watson does best. And that most certainly does not indicate it was a run first scheme nor did watson perform well in that pass first scheme.

How does Stefanski's scheme cause watson to miss on all 9 of his pass attempts of over 15 yards like he did against the Cowboys? How does it prevent watson from working through his progressions? How does stefanski's scheme cause watson to hold the ball so long?

It seems as if what you are indicating is that of both watson and Mayfield aren't running around like chickens with their heads cut off while throwing the ball 60 times the scheme does not fit them.

And while I'm in no way trying to compare watson to Mayfield I do think the facts are a stark contrast to what you posted.

In Mayfield's game against the Commanders he only attempted 30 pass plays with the Bucs attempting 30 rushing plays. A perfect 50/50 balance which is much more like the scheme you say that Stefanski runs with totally different results. So it would seem as though baker doesn't need a "pass first" scheme to flourish.

Maybe you could give me a few more details as to exactly what it is you're trying to say here.

I think it may be more likely that when watson was playing for the Texans he played a very weak division at the time which helped him look better than maybe he was. Which could easily be said about mayfield now.

Good post BF.

I just don’t get it. Flacco is almost the opposite of Deshaun. Flacco was old and slow but he could read a defense, and had arm talent.

Deshaun is younger and mobile. He has arm talent. - Can he read a defense like Flacco could?

That may be the biggest problem.

Also, if I had to place a bet on Deshaun taking us to the playoffs or Deshaun completely busting and not living up to the contract, I’ll go with the latter.

Greg Cosell is an unbiased true NFL expert.

He is not a fan. He has been breaking down film for 50 years. When he speaks about a player I am all ears. I have great respect for Mr. Cosell.

He said "DW is not playing at an NFL level. He is late. He gets lost in the pocket. He is not seeing it. He is hard to watch.

If he plays in Jacksonville like he did Sunday; the Browns have a decision to make. Winston has won in the NFL."

DW is not playing at a level to win games in this league.

This has gone from bad to worse.

I do not want to feel this way but I do.

I want DW gone. Best case he gets suspended and the Browns do not have to pay him.

If that all goes nowhere it makes it harder.

You have so much invested in him. You want to believe and that makes cold hard decisions harder.

You are more apt to keep trying hoping he will improve.

It will not be easy for the Browns as an organization to walk away from DW.

I hope that they can go to the heart of the problem and realize this guy is done.

Is DW doing it intentionally? He can say he wants to win here all he wants, but the facts are he has a TON of guaranteed money in his pocket. If he intentionally plays poorly enough, he gets to sit and not play while cashing checks for a third straight season.

DW was a "flash in the pan". I look at the draft choices Haslam and Berry gave away for this nobody, and it sickens me. I compare Mayfield to Drew Brees. SD Chargers gave up on him, yet look at his career. The same will be true for Mayfield, while the Browns continue to struggle for a QB. And yet, die-hard Browns fans will continue to support this SNAFU called the "Browns". And I thought Modell sucked as an Owner...

Absolutely; I cannot believe he "cares" about the legend of Cleveland Browns football. He's a millionaire, and could NOT care less about Cleveland or the Browns.

Similar has crossed my mind. Intentionally, I doubt, but don't discount apathy.

Right now I think he stinks, I might feel different after Sunday, but I doubt it.

Micah Parsons was facing Hudson and Ifedi. It didn't go well. I don't think any QB would thrive in that situation.

Bitonio was getting walked back into Watson's lap and Teller and Pocic were getting split way too easily. On the rare occasions Watson had time, he was still feeling Parsons. He took some big shots.

Parsons isn't someone you can scramble away from. We were in big trouble the second we fell behind.

I don't know how to cut and paste plays.

But I watched the Dallas game closely. There were plays there to be made. Plays that could have been made and were not.

Not because of anything other than DW not making the play.

Dallas has a good defense. The OL did not help. He was rushed.

I saw that. I also saw players wide open. Throws not even close.

His QBR was 9. That is not a misprint. There are valid reasons to receive that grade.

Who would blame him? It looks like the national and social media will hunt him to the bitter end before this is all over.

With that said. When will be the time to start to question Andrew Berry?

No, I do not.

The organization is in a very tough spot.

I’d waive him and just start eating the money. Finish the season with Winston and DTR. Bring back Huntley when those guys get hurt. Get to the off season and regroup.

The experiment failed. Own it and let’s move on.

The only way to not start talking about next year is to cut bait on Watson.

Winston and DTR will give the team a chance.

Watson is holding the entire team back.

I wonder what we’re not seeing. We have players like Joel Bitonio who wanted to play hurt even after the Texans game was out of hand. Guys like Amare and Chubb who are consummate professionals that do and say all of the right things. - Smart, tough, accountable. - And they have to sit there and make a fraction of what Deshaun is making? Is Deshaun leading by example inside the locker room? He isn’t outside of it.

This is why I’m perplexed at the Watson trade and contract. Smart tough accountable.. and they sign this guy to a record setting contract while under investigation? No sense.

The Browns brilliant front office fell in love
With Watsons fantasy football numbers at Houston
Problem was they didn't bother to see if DW
was a true leader or not or even a winner .
He was neither at Houston .
Funny thing he has more convictions than TDs
As a Brown
And why is Mary Kay the Bimbo always defending
DW. She is such a Homer. The worst Browns beat

If I was making the call, Watson gets the first half in Jacksonville. If he’s sucking so hard he’s peeling the chrome off a trailer hitch, bench him.

I heard MKC defending Watson this morning on the Carmen show. For someone, who along with Grossi, loves to dabble with controversy especially when there is none, I did find it odd that she shied away from it and was defending him. This is a wet dream scenario for her.
