Second Harvest announces food shipment cancellation

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — The Second Harvest Food Bank of Clark, Champaign & Logan Counties’ announced that their federal food shipment has been cancelled.

In a social media post, the organization announced that the food shipment was cancelled as of Wednesday. The shipment was scheduled to arrive between May and August.

“This news comes at a devastating time: summer is fast approaching, when children lose access to free or reduced school meals, and uncertainty remains around the future of subsidized food programs like Summer Feeding,” Second Harvest said in the post.

The following food items (among others) will be impacted as a result of the cancellation:

Chicken
Pork
Milk
Eggs
Cereal
Turkey breast

Second Harvest is also navigating the end of the LFPA program, which will cease in June. These two factors will impact Second Harvest, costing $453,867 in food value, as well as 378, 222 less meals for families across the region.

The organization says that its concerned that there could be more cuts in the future.

These are mainly rural, republican counties.

It's not denying food -- there's food everywhere.

That's because I don't object to it.

Last time: This was a program introduced by American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). It was to address food insecurity exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Those are words straight from the White House, not mine.

It was meant to task local organizations to purchase food grown within 400 miles of distribution points. The major focus of LFPA (self-described) was on socially disadvantaged farmers, including those who faced barriers due to race, ethnicity, or economic status. "The program demonstrated success in linking local producers with food banks and underserved communities." Sounds like they accomplished the goal. Besides, in case you're still in a mask in your basement, COVID, as a pandemic, is over. Done, kaput, it's the flu now. Also, this program was already scheduled to end.

If we've already linked underserved food producers with area food banks, it seems like a good time to accept the fact that this was never meant to continue in perpetuity. Any funding these programs need can be accomplished at the state level.

You can cry, b____ and moan that everyone's starving because of this. They're not, they won't, the food pantries will be fine. Any shortages because this funding ends will be fulfilled by the businesses and donations from those that supported them for the hundred years before COVID.

I get it. Inflation in food prices should not be considered when cutting funding to pre pandemic levels. Because you know, the same amount of money still buys the same amount of food, right?

Is that what you now call standing up against cutting food supplies to the most needy people in our country now? "cry, b____ and moan"?

Is that why food pantries all across the country are worried about these cuts and how it effects their ability to feed people? Because "they will be fine"? Businesses and donations from those that supported them for the hundred years before COVID are and have been supporting them all this time. This isn't that hard to understand.

I know where a couple of them are because I donate food to them. I also know first hand how badly these cuts will hurt their ability to feed the hungry. Maybe you should actually talk to people that run some of these food banks to find out for yourself rather than posting nonsense.

Funny - I don't remember this outrage and agenda being championed everytime a district judge ruled against the POTUS when it was Biden in office. Shocker. And that would be a REAL apples to apples comparison.

Our debt has nothing at all to do with the things they are attacking. I bet cutting off Elon’s 8 million government dollars PER DAY would be more TRUE savings than anything DOGE has legally done. We wouldn’t have any national debt if the rich were taxed the same as the poor and working class. We would have a surplus if they were taxed like they were from 1944-1963.
