I'd expect us to sign a lot of guys at positions we didnt address in the draft (WR, OL, Secondary)

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Yep, and the FO can start calling player’s agents (to offer if they don’t get drafted) since their draft is done.

I’m clueless.

Hey, IrishDawg (and any others inclined to be helpful) where do you go or how do you proceed with forming these UDFA lists? Fascinated by the number of names you generate, and how numbers get signed. Blind to the process, but interested in the processing and screening. Thanx! Bard

ESPN has a list of names that were available draft picks, then they remove them as they get drafted. Unfortunately, this list is based on ESPN analysts rankings, so we really don't know who is better than who in the eyes of actual NFL scouts.

As for the process, it really is every man for themselves.

It's up to the clubs to get in touch with prospects as soon as the draft closes. Then it's a race, for the teams to get the guys you had predetermined to be draft possibilities and then for the prospects to grab a contract before a team closes their doors. The ones on the fringe of being drafted can actually take calls, more than likely they will have several options. Others who didn't get a good prognosis on their predraft analysis need to sign with the first team that comes calling.

They can continue signing until they reach 90 players signed. Then it is a matter of waiving a player if you want to add another one.

There is any number of sites out there that track the UDFA lists also...

At any given time the team will still need to keep their top 53 contracts under the salary cap...

The Browns should bring in Tez to give Gabriel a familiar set of hands during camp.

I was saying the same thing but with Traeshon Holden. (Signing with Dallas, though)

Dom Jones looks the most interesting to me so far. Wonder if he could be a safety convert.

Guard with the Musketeer name from Cinci has some tools, but needs to clean up the technical stuff. Looks the part size wise and was getting to the second level pretty well in the game I watched.

None of these guys seem like they were real prospects who barely missed being drafted. They aren’t on the lists of top updraft Ed prospects that I am seeing. Maybe we really scouted deep.

I watched video on Osborne and he looked good starting at different positions for SMU..RG & RT.

His ability to play multiple positions will be a plus for Osborne to make the team.

Ja'Seem Reed, WR from San Diego looks interesting. One of the 13 UDFA's we signed per the official team app.

It'll be interesting to see how well he can work against a higher level of defender.

It’s be nice to see a tryout TE - or a guy at any other position - make the team. We need a couple tight ends with KS’s system.

Honest question, what UDFA players have made the roster and made a significant contribution for the Browns in the last bunch of years, anyone know?

Hickman played a decent bit last year and looks in line to start this year. DeAnthony Bell was a core special teamer. Diabate played some as well.

Those are just off the top of my head.

Off the top I don't know...Hickman maybe.

In the end it doesn't matter. Those guys aren't being signed because we hope to find a star. Well, ok, we hope.

Roster building isn't just from the top down. It's also about building from the bottom up. If you can get better at the bottom of the roster as well, you have a better team.

Here's the thing about the last 3 years... We only had (1) second round pick and zero first round picks.

The draft classes consisted of:
2024 (1) second, (1) third, (1) fifth, (1) sixth and (2) seventh
2023 (2) third, (2) fourth, (2) fifth and (1) sixth
2022 (3) third, (2) fourth (one of which was K Cade York), (1) fifth, (1) sixth and (2) seventh

% of success (become regular starters) in rounds 3-7
1 50% or 16 players
2 33% or 11 players
then
3 16% or 5 players
4 8% or 3 players
5 5% or 1.6 players
6 2% or .64 players
7 1% or .32 players

Edit: Currently 12% of NFL starters are UDFA.... food for thought

As you can imagine, with teams signing upwards of 5-15 UDFA players each off season, it is more common than you think to get a UDFA to pan out than it is to hit on your single pick at a position in one of these later rounds. They come to camp basically on a tryout. Same as draft picks of course, but the draft picks have a leg up because the draft capital was spent on them. If an UDFA player is outperforming a draft pick in camp, it becomes pretty likely that player was just missed in the process. Easy to do with approximately 16,000 prospects available and only 257 draft picks made.

If anyone is going to get excited about a 5th round draft pick before camp starts, it's just as valid for someone to get excited about an UDFA getting signed.
