Wow...ex smokers really are the worst when it comes to being smoking nazi's.

This really isn't about going outside for a few minutes for me. I've said many times it keeps me from chain smoking during games -- which is a good thing. It's about the voters telling businesses how they must operate/control a legal vice. Not sure why you guys can't see that...

But businesses already have rules and laws they have to follow.

Frankly, I'm not sure why this is such a big deal. Bars have to be licensed. They can only serve during particular hours. If they want to serve on Sunday, they need a Sunday license. No minors can drink alcohol. It is a felony to take a firearm into a liquor establishment. There are layers upon layers upon layers of laws governing the sales and consumption of alcohol. This isn't new ... or news. However ... because smoking is such an emotional issue ... especially to smokers ...... this becomes some sort of civil rights case.

Remember .. while smoking is legal activity .... it is also legally restricted and further is a privledge .... not a right. There is a huge difference.

Hey.. sorry Chelle.. I just don't like being around it anymore. It's kinda as simple as that. I'm enjoying fresh smelling clothes, my kids aren't getting teased at school about the smoke smell etc.. I'm healthier.. I just don't see the downside from my POV. I understand your point about having a businessman / woman determine the policies for their business. I will say that If I have a choice between a smoking bar and a bar that has a patio.. my choice is usually pretty easy

There is no downside to quitting. I understand all of those things...hell, don't like the smell either!

Sure. And that's just it, it should be a choice based on the business owners who either allow smoking or don't. This entire debate is moot anyway as it is what it is. I don't mind going outside for a few minutes, but I still feel it's not my place to tell a bar owner how to run their business.

No one is talking about smoking being a right. We are all talking about the rights of business to makes it own decisions. Why does every bar need to be smoke free? Why is it necessary? Why not let the demand for non-smoking bars dictate this? It was not necessary for the government to be involved. If you don't like being around smokers, go to a non-smoking bar. It really is that simple. Now how much tax money is being wasted to enforce this? Whats next to banned? How long before certain types of alcohol is banned? How long before restraunts are not allowed to serve anything deemed "unhealthy" It's the slippery slope and it WILL get worse. Look at the original article of this thread, it is getting worse.

I wasn't aware that cigarettes were being banned.

You talk about a slippery slope ..... and the original article certainly is ridiculous ...... but for decades were heard about "smoker's rights" ...... and now the non-smokers have demanded their rights.

The direction of the country is towards non smoking workplaces. People working in bars deserve the same smoke free environment as employees elsewhere do.

What if the workers don't want a smoke free environment? I would love to know the ratio of non-smokers v. smokers who work in bars.

If we would let our supposed free market dictate what works for the property owners in allowing a perfectly legal activity, it would all take care of itself. The bar owner can hire SMOKERS ONLY just like the Cleveland Clinic has a policy of hiring non-smokers only. All would be fine. BTW, I don't smoke.
