Michigan fires Sherrone Moore for inappropriate relationship

Michigan fired coach Sherrone Moore for cause Wednesday after a university investigation that found "credible evidence" he was engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.

"This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior," athletic director Warde Manuel said in a statement Wednesday.

Biff Poggi was named interim coach. Michigan is slated to play Texas in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on Dec. 31.

The news ends Moore's Michigan coaching career at 17-8, with his final game a 27-9 loss to Ohio State to conclude a 9-3 season. The 39-year-old had gone through two years of his five-year contract as the Wolverines' head coach, and the school's firing for cause means it isn't planning to pay the nearly $12.3 million it would have owed him on his deal.

Moore was promoted to Michigan's head coach in the wake of Jim Harbaugh's departure for the NFL after Michigan's 2023 national title.

Moore endured some off-field controversies before his firing, including a suspension in Week 3 and Week 4 of this season tied to the Connor Stalions illegal advanced scouting scheme.

Moore was set to serve an additional one-game suspension for the start of the 2026 season as well. He was also suspended for the season opener in 2023 as part of self-imposed penalties for breaking recruiting rules.

Moore was a successful offensive line coach and offensive coordinator before being promoted to head coach. He was a finalist for the Broyles Award in 2023, when he was the playcaller on Michigan's national title team.

The firing puts Michigan in a difficult position of finding a coach in the wake of what's been considered the most volatile coaching carousel in recent college football history. There's already been a flurry of hires and extensions, which will complicate Michigan's search.

Ex-Michigan coach Moore detained by police after firing

Sherrone Moore was detained by police in Saline, Michigan, on Wednesday and was later turned over to a second area police department for investigation into potential charges, the Saline Police Department stated.

"The City of Saline Police Department assisted in locating and detaining former University of Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore," the department said in a statement released to ESPN. "Mr. Moore was turned over to the Pittsfield Township Police Department for investigation into potential charges."

The University of Michigan fired Moore as its head football coach earlier on Wednesday following an investigation into Moore's conduct with a staff member.

"U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately," the school said in a statement. "Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.

"The conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior."

Calls to both the Saline and Pittsfield Township Police Departments have not been returned.

Moore, 39, spent two seasons as Michigan's head coach, after serving as an assistant coach with the program beginning in 2018.

There seem to be a few items crossing from rumor to fact at this point...

Moore definitely had an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.

MANY among the college ranks and media say this was common knowledge for quite a while.

It is WIDELY reported that he got her pregnant and "forced" her to get an abortion. After which, he raised her salary from $58,000 to $90,000.

It is WIDELY reported that the arrest took place near the staffer's residence and that the charge was assault.

It is WIDELY reported that he threatened to kill her with a knife and threatened to kill himself.

Absolutely bonkers.

There is also some question as to the timing of Moore being fired, right after signing day. Supposedly the University investigated this thing months ago but they say at that time they could find no evidence but right after signing day they say they found new evidence so he was terminated. Makes you wonder. I'm curious as to how many of these new recruits are going to jump ship when the NCAA gives them their 15 day window to either stay or transfer.

Sad story. When a person sees their world in the suck of a downward spiral, many times they do irrational things.

This is tragic and beyond a football story.

Yep. From the breaking story Scott Van Pelt (probably one of the most trusted voices in all of media) pulled no punches in saying basically "Hey, didn't everyone know this thing was going on? We did."

Adam Schifty said the university had a previous investigation and found nothing. He was pretty adamant about it. Pretty sure UM (his alumni) told him to shut his pie-hole, because they tried walking that back. Rich Eisen said he heard about the affair from no less than four people starting 90 minutes after the loss to Ohio State.

Here's my .02: I'm sure UM knew about it. Reports from everyone in the area are that it had crossed the threshold of "secret" months ago. There's cell footage from residents of them walking together to the practice field. The 911 caller even said this had been going on for months.

The initial "investigation" was probably to see how soon this will blow up in their faces. It's an affair, it's inappropriate, probably knew they had cause for termination but decided to get through the season.

The when, where and how of the pregnancy/abortion bomb getting dropped was likely the game changer. At that point, I don't think there is any university that is going to scream "Wait! Wait! Don't sign with us! Our coach is corrupt!" Besides, it's like you say, they have ample time to jump ship. I am not saying that makes it okay. Just saying that's probably the way it would play out anywhere in the country.

I think the problem is having enough evidence to fire someone "with cause". You have to have a lot of evidence short of criminal charges in order to do that. You may be aware that it's going on but proving that is a different matter.

The story just gets sicker. Now i'm seeing and hearing reports that Moore has been stalking and harassing multiple women online for months. Supposedly 1 prominent alumnus reported that Moore went on to his (alumnus) ex-wife's instagram page and was liking old photos and trying to hook up through her DMs and that finally the ex-wife got tired of it and asked the alumnus to do something about it.

From what I've read, the "staffer", after having denied any relationship before, ended up going to the University on Monday morning and admitting an affair, and took proof, i.e. e-mails, phone calls, etc.
