Trump Claims China Will Attack Canadian Hockey in Crazed Rant

Sorry, Canadians, it’s time to pack up your skates—Donald Trump says China is going to take away your ice hockey.

In a scattered tirade on Truth Social Monday evening, Trump claimed that Canada’s national pastime was coming to an end while threatening to block the opening of a newly constructed 1.5 mile-long bridge connecting Ontario to Michigan.

“I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them, and also, importantly, Canada treats the United States with the Fairness and Respect that we deserve,” Trump wrote.

Trump seemed particularly pissed that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had distanced himself from the United States, and “wants to make a deal with China—which will eat Canada alive.”

“The first thing China will do is terminate ALL Ice Hockey being played in Canada, and permanently eliminate The Stanley Cup,” Trump wrote, implying that a new trade deal with China could have extreme—and inexplicable—cultural consequences. This kind of racist nonsense is to be expected from a president who’s built his career on taking slap shots at immigrants.

While Carney had attempted to thaw economic relations with China last month, he has also been very clear that Canada has “no intention” of pursuing a free trade deal with China, acknowledging that it would completely rupture his country’s relationship to the United States. That doesn’t mean he held back from criticizing Trump on the world stage, though.

Trump whined that Canada would no longer stock American booze, even though that decision was in retaliation for his sweeping “reciprocal” tariffs, and that it still had steep tariffs on U.S. dairy products—even though those tariffs only apply after the U.S. makes a Trump-negotiated quantity of tariff-free dairy sales to Canada.

On the subject of the new bridge, the president falsely claimed that Canada owned both sides of the new bridge and “built it with virtually no US content.”

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s spokesperson, Stacey LaRouche, pointed out that while Canada had completely financed the $4 billion bridge, it was “built by union construction workers from both sides of the border—and it will be operated under a joint ownership agreement between Michigan and Canada.”

On the other side of the bridge, Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens expressed disbelief at Trump’s rant. “It’s just insane,” he said. “I really can’t believe what I’m reading.”

Nor should he—because it’s all complete nonsense.

As everyone knows, the Country of Canada has treated the United States very unfairly for decades. Now, things are turning around for the U.S.A., and FAST! But imagine, Canada is building a massive bridge between Ontario and Michigan. They own both the Canada and the United States side and, of course, built it with virtually no U.S. content. President Barack Hussein Obama stupidly gave them a waiver so they could get around the BUY AMERICAN Act, and not use any American products, including our Steel. Now, the Canadian Government expects me, as President of the United States, to PERMIT them to just “take advantage of America!” What does the United States of America get — Absolutely NOTHING! Ontario won't even put U.S. spirits, beverages, and other alcoholic products, on their shelves, they are absolutely prohibited from doing so and now, on top of everything else, Prime Minister Carney wants to make a deal with China — which will eat Canada alive. We’ll just get the leftovers! I don't think so. The first thing China will do is terminate ALL Ice Hockey being played in Canada, and permanently eliminate The Stanley Cup. The Tariffs Canada charges us for our Dairy products have, for many years, been unacceptable, putting our Farmers at great financial risk. We will start negotiations, IMMEDIATELY. With all that we have given them, we should own, perhaps, at least one half of this asset. Olsen rose to prominence by working closely with Trump to undermine the results of the 2020 election under the slogan “Stop the Steal.” He urged several DOJ officials that year to file a complaint to the Supreme Court scrutinizing Trump’s loss, and even called the president multiple times during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. A federal judge later sanctioned Olsen for making “false, misleading and unsupported factual assertions” in support of Republican Kari Lake’s unsuccessful legal challenge to overturn her loss in the 2022 Arizona gubernatorial race.

A disgraced, sanctioned attorney is getting access to all of these people's personal information. Many of the claims being used have already been debunked in court cases. But he has been instrumental in helping spread election lies from the very start. Now they have stooped to the level of using those lies in a coordinated effort by the trump administration to obtain warrants and manufacture even more lies and mistrust in our election process. They are trying to insure that Americans believe an election can only be fair when they win and Democrats lose. This has gotten to the point that is more than disgusting.

The DOJ has traditionally operated with a degree of separation from the White House to prevent its powers from being abused for political purposes.

A banner featuring a photo of Donald Trump and the words “Make America Safe Again” was hung from the Justice Department’s headquarters in Washington on Thursday in one of the most public signs of the president’s influence over a department that once brought criminal charges against him.

The Justice Department has traditionally operated with a degree of independence from the White House. That separation, however, has eroded during Trump’s second term as the Justice Department has gone after his perceived political foes.

“We are proud at this Department of Justice to celebrate 250 years of our great country and our historic work to make America safe again at President Trump’s direction,” a DOJ spokesperson said when asked about the banner.

Trump has proposed a number of projects and events ahead of the country’s 250th anniversary, such as an IndyCar race on the streets of Washington. But the banner at the Justice Department does not mention the 250th and doesn’t include the logo associated with the celebration.

The White House referred questions about the banner to the DOJ.

The Justice Department, now adorned with a portrait of Trump, once investigated the president. In 2022, then-Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Jack Smith as special counsel to look into Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents and his efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

The cases were abandoned in 2024 after Trump won the election, with Smith citing a long-standing DOJ policy of not prosecuting a sitting president. Trump denied any wrongdoing in the cases.

Since taking office again, the Justice Department has pursued cases against some of Trump’s perceived opponents, including former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James after Trump publicly urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to bring charges.

It also tried and failed to indict six Democratic lawmakers who urged military members to not comply with illegal orders and has launched investigations into others like Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the 2024 Democratic vice presidential nominee.

Stacey Young, a Justice Department veteran under both Republican and Democratic administrations who left the department last year and founded the group Justice Connection, said in a statement that the placement of the banner at the DOJ was “shameful.”

“Hanging that banner should put to rest any doubt that Donald Trump has hijacked the independence of the Justice Department. He — not the American people — is the only client DOJ’s current leadership serves,” Young said.

The banner is the latest step in Trump’s efforts to put his stamp on Washington and use its landmarks to exert his influence. Trump’s handpicked board voted last year to rename the Kennedy Center to include his name in a move that prompted a lawsuit. Trump’s name was also added to the facade of the Institute of Peace’s headquarters, an agency the administration had quickly dismantled after Trump took office.

At the White House, Trump added a “Hall of Presidents” to the West Colonnade with plaques that mocked former Presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama.
