Trump threatens Canada with higher tariffs over wildfire smoke

President Trump on Friday threatened additional tariffs on Canada for wildfires that have blanketed large parts of the Midwest and East Coast in smoke in recent days, blaming the U.S.' northern neighbor for failing to contain the blazes.

"We are holding Canada responsible for the fact that they are not properly maintaining their Forests, and Brush therein, and the United States is being unnecessarily invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air, the quality of which is dangerous, and totally unacceptable!" the president wrote on Truth Social, accusing Canada of "Willful Negligence."

He went on to write that the problem is "costing the United States Billions of Dollars, which cost of this pollution must of necessity be added to the TARIFFS Canada is currently paying."

Mr. Trump said he would discuss the matter with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Asked about the president's comments, Carney's office referred CBS News to a statement from Canadian Minister of Emergency Management Eleanor Olszewski that said the country is "working with urgency alongside provincial and territorial partners." She also said Canada has spent billions of dollars on forest fire prevention in recent years.

"Canada and the United States have a long history of working together to fight wildfires on both sides of the border — it is a history that both countries benefit from and that we are building on during this challenging wildfire season," Olszewski wrote in her statement, pointing to Canadian firefighters' role in assisting with last year's Los Angeles wildfires.

Earlier this week, U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra also praised the "outstanding cooperation between the United States and Canada" in fighting the "shared challenge" of wildfires. On Friday, Hoekstra shared Mr. Trump's social media post criticizing Canada.

Mr. Trump has had a tense relationship with Canada due to trade, NATO, a dispute over a Detroit-area bridge and Mr. Trump's threats to make Canada the U.S.' 51st state.

The Trump administration's tariffs on goods from Canada — the second-largest U.S. trading partner — currently stand at 10%, though most Canadian imports are exempt because they comply with the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, a trade deal signed during Mr. Trump's first term. The president's ability to levy tariffs was constrained by a Supreme Court ruling earlier this year that blocked him from using an economic emergency powers law.

Mr. Trump's latest broadside against Canada comes as hundreds of wildfires burn there, causing smoke to blow into the New York City, Chicago, Detroit and D.C. areas, leading to severe air quality issues. Wildfires are also burning in Minnesota.

Some GOP lawmakers have blamed the Canadian government. Four Michigan Republicans penned a letter to Carney this week that said "our patience has run out," accusing Canada of "chronic under-investment in forest thinning, fuel reduction, and prescribed burns."

"This is the third consecutive year we have had to write to Canadian officials about a crisis that Canada has the tools to prevent and has chosen not to," said Reps. John James, Lisa McClain, John Moolenaar and Jack Bergman, adding: "Our constituents are breathing the consequences of this failure right now, and they deserve better than to be told, again, that it will be handled."

GOP Sen. Bernie Moreno of Ohio floated sanctions against Canada. And Republican Rep. Nick Langworthy of upstate New York wrote on X that "there should be consequences" if Canada fails to take "meaningful action" to prevent future wildfires.

Carney briefly addressed the lawmakers' criticism on Thursday by noting the role of climate change in extreme weather and chiding the United States for backing away from clean energy.

"Fighting climate change is the responsibility of all countries, including the United States," Carney told reporters.

Influencer brothers Andrew and Tristan Tate, whose social media empire promoting wealth, male dominance and misogyny has made them among the world’s most polarizing internet personalities, were arrested Saturday in Miami as British authorities sought their extradition on rape and sex trafficking charges.

The brothers were taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service on a sealed warrant, agency spokesperson Brady McCarron told The Associated Press, placing the United States at the center of an international legal saga that has stretched from Romania to Britain.

British prosecutors announced Saturday that they were seeking the brothers’ extradition on charges alleging they raped and trafficked women between 2010 and 2017.

The dual U.S. and British citizens moved to Romania in 2016. They were arrested there in 2022, accused of participating in schemes to lure women for sexual exploitation. They denied those allegations and the Romanian case hasn’t gone forward because of legal and procedural problems.

Last year, they were allowed to leave Romania and flew to Florida on a private jet.

The brothers are expected to appear in Miami’s federal court early next week, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke to on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive law enforcement operations.

The pending charges in the United Kingdom accused the brothers of abusing women in an area north of London, where they grew up. Their lawyers had said they denied the allegations.

Joseph McBride, an attorney representing the Tate brothers, said in a phone interview Saturday evening that he has not been able to speak with his clients but called the new charges out of the U.K. “filth and slander” intended to derail defamation lawsuits filed by the brothers in the U.S.

“They’re pulling out all the stops to make sure these guys never get their day in court,” McBride said.

“We are confident that once a competent judge sees the facts, and once the Department of Justice confronts this egregious abuse of its own authority, Andrew and Tristan Tate will walk free. America does not do Britain’s political dirty work.”

Tate has been banned from social media platforms for hate speech

Andrew Tate, 39, first reached a mainstream audience as a contestant on the U.K. reality television show “Big Brother” in 2016. He was removed from the show when a video surfaced that appeared to show Tate assaulting a woman. He and his brother Tristan Tate, 38, are vocal supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Andrew Tate has amassed over 10 million followers on X but has been banned from platforms like YouTube, TikTok and Instagram for violating hate speech guidelines. His most widely condemned rhetoric includes comments that women who are sexually assaulted should bear some responsibility for their attacks, graphic descriptions of how he might attack women and criticisms of people who seek treatment for mental illness.

The Tate brothers have consistently denied allegations of abuse and human trafficking, claiming that violent and misogynistic statements have been taken out of context or were intended as jokes.

In a statement Saturday, the U.K.'s Crown Prosecution Services said that in addition to the charges publicly announced against the brothers in 2025, involving alleged crimes against three women, it was bringing a total of 38 new charges related to “four further victims.”

Both brothers are accused of rape and human trafficking. Andrew Tate faces an additional charge of profiting from prostitution, and 19 charges “for offences relating to indecent images of a child and extreme pornography,” according to U.K. authorities.

“There is no place for male violence against women and girls, and we will continue to work tirelessly to support victims and investigate all reports made to us,” said Karena Thomas, an assistant chief constable of the Bedfordshire Police, which investigated the case.

United Kingdom (2025–2026): In May 2025, the UK Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) brought 21 charges against the brothers regarding three victims. On July 18, 2026, following a new evidence file, the CPS authorized 38 additional charges and issued warrants for their arrest in Florida, bringing the total number of alleged victims to seven. They are currently facing extradition from the U.S. to the UK.

Romania (2022–2025): The brothers were initially arrested by Romanian authorities in December 2022 along with two women, leading to formal indictments in June 2023 for rape, human trafficking, and forming an organized crime group. Although they were prohibited from leaving the country for more than two years, a Romanian court lifted their travel restrictions in early 2025.

Trump's Freedom 250 asks for another $10M in taxpayer funds

Congress approved $150 million for the country's 250th anniversary celebrations. The Trump administration is seeking an additional $10 million amid unanswered questions about its finances.

WASHINGTON – The Trump administration is seeking an additional $10 million of taxpayer money for Freedom 250’s grand celebrations honoring the country’s semiquincentennial, drawing fresh questions about how the group spent millions in previous public and private funding.

In a July 29 letter to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Oregon, said Congress received the request earlier in the month for “an unspecified amount of funding” to help Freedom 250 “recoup costs” in a broader Trump administration budget request.

A meeting between Merkley’s office and the Interior Department later revealed that the agency was asking for $10 million to reimburse the National Parks Service for “routine costs” associated with events on the National Mall, including the Christianity-dominated Rededicate 250 prayer event, the Great American State Fair, and the July 4th Salute to America, Merkley wrote.

The request suggested that Freedom 250 already spent more than a $100 million in taxpayer and private dollars it previously received, Merkley said in his letter.

“Congress has already provided substantial funding for these activities,” he wrote. “It is unacceptable to ask the American people to bail out Freedom 250.”

Congress allocated $150 million for the Department of the Interior to distribute, as it saw fit, for the country’s 250th anniversary in the 2025 One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Interior gave $50 million of that to America250, the congressionally created group tasked with planning the celebration, and $100 million to Trump’s Freedom 250 group.

Freedom 250 also solicited donations from private corporations, including Exxon Mobil, Mastercard, Deloitte, and Palantir. Those efforts came under scrutiny this year after Democrats questioned whether the administration was offering preferential policy treatment in exchange for contributions.

America250 declined to comment on whether it had received all of the $50 million. "We have received a portion of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act funds to date, and remain in conversations with Congress for our funding requests," the organization said in an emailed statement. As of February, America250 said it had only received $25 million of the funds.

In an email to USA TODAY, the Interior Department said the request for additional funds reflects expenditures related to an “elevated security posture” at events after the security breach at the White House Correspondents' Dinner in April and other high-profile threats.

Public disclosures of Freedom 250's finances, the amount raised in private donations and how it spent that money will not be available until after the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30.

The Trump administration created Freedom 250 as a subsidiary of the National Parks Foundation, a congressionally-chartered nonprofit. The structure of the organization allows it to bypass traditional, immediate disclosure laws federal agencies must abide by.

Freedom 250 has spent at least $10 million retrofitting tractor-trailer trucks into mobile history exhibits that have been accused of presenting an inaccurate, Christian-focused depiction of the country’s past. It also paid Event Strategies Inc., the group that planned President Donald Trump’s Jan. 6, 2021, rally, hundreds of thousands of dollars to plan 250 events.

Members of Congress, including Merkley, have asked the Department of Interior on multiple occassions for information about how Freedom 250 spent the $100 million in taxpayer funding, private donor information, and costs incurred related to 250 events.

As of July 30, Interior has not yet publicly responded to those requests.

When reached for comment about the funding request, Freedom 250 spokesperson Danielle Alvarez said "Democrats are trying to make America's 250th birthday about partisan politics."

"Their divisive rhetoric forced Freedom 250 to increase security at these events, but we won't let them stop us from honoring our country's milestone," she said. "This is just another attempt to divide us, and it won't work."

Freedom 250 has two more events left before the end of the year: the Patriot Games, a nationwide high school athletic competition on Aug. 9-11 at Spire Academy in Ohio, and an IndyCar race around the National Mall on Aug. 22-23.

Trump blames Minnesota governor, not Iran, for cyberattacks on the state's water systems

U.S. officials said authorities are probing whether Iran could be behind them.

President Donald Trump on Friday blamed Minnesota's Democratic governor for cyberattacks on the state's water systems even though U.S. officials previously told ABC News authorities are investigating whether Iran or hackers associated with the country could be behind them.

"We heard in Minnesota there was a cyberattack and they blame it on Iran. I don't think so. I think, I blame it on Minnesota because they're grossly incompetent," Trump said a Cabinet meeting at Camp David.

More than 30 water systems in Minnesota were targeted in a cyberattack Sunday and Monday according to Minnesota IT Services (MNIT).

MNIT said the attackers targeted systems to remotely monitor and control equipment, including the programmable logic controllers (PLCs).

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) said in an alert Thursday that cyber threat actors are targeting PLCs and modifying passwords to "to lock out operators."

Despite the warnings, Trump laid the blame on Minnesota and Democratic Gov. Tim Walz.

"I think that Minnesota ought to get its act together. It's one of the worst run states," he told ABC News' Mary Bruce when she asked about the attack.

Walz pushed back against Trump in statements on social media Friday.

"Trump knows exactly who is responsible for this attack, and knows that other states were hit too. This is what modern warfare looks like, and it further illustrates there’s no plan to win a war with Iran," he said.

The governor also noted federal cuts by the The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) weakened cyber security.'

"DOGE took an axe to CISA and left the U.S. exposed to cyber attacks. Thankfully, our experts in Minnesota were able to identify the vulnerability quickly and work with local communities to stop it," he said.

MNIT said there are no active requests from Minnesota localities for residents to change their water use and that it is working with federal investigators in the probe. The agency said it has not determined who was responsible.

"In this situation, 'impacted' means investigators confirmed malicious activity involving a system’s technology. It does not mean every affected community experienced a disruption to water service," MNIT said in a statement Thursday.

Southern Baptist 'Leader' Listed as Speaker for Anti-Muslim, Anti-Immigrant Conference

William Wolfe heads the Center for Baptist Leadership. This is the controversial company he's keeping at an upcoming conference in Texas.

Less than two months after taking a victory lap following the Southern Baptist Convention’s rightward turn, William Wolfe is headed back into controversy.

Wolfe, who leads the Center for Baptist Leadership and spearheaded efforts to push the nation’s largest Protestant denomination farther to the right during its recent annual meeting, is among the scheduled speakers for this weekend’s gathering of the right-wing True Texas Project (TTP) in Fort Worth.

The first-term Trump administration political appointee made news at a TTP event earlier this year when he expressed alarm about the skin color of people he saw at a DMV office in his home state of North Carolina.

“My boys all look like me—and I want my children to grow up in a country where they’re not minorities,” Wolfe told attendees.

The True Texas Project is listed by the Southern Poverty Law Center as an anti-government group and, as I documented two months ago, the group’s leaders are considered so extreme that mainstream Republicans have publicly denounced them as “antisemites and racists” and boycotted their conferences.

Among the announced topics for the “Year of the Patriot Conference”—which is scheduled to be held at Birchman Baptist Church, a Southern Baptist congregation—are the “strategy for stopping Islam” and “the threats of Sharia law, totalitarianism & communism facing our faith, freedoms, and way of life.”

Wolfe’s topic is listed as “the church’s response to mass immigration.”

Among those joining the Southern Baptist activist are a former neo-Nazi pushing for a White ethnostate, a Christian nationalist podcaster who talks of Jews being “at odds” with American values and argues political violence is “morally justified,” and a political figure with ties to Hitler-loving Nick Fuentes.

Below are, from my perspectives, the three most interesting figures I have identified from the conference;

True Texas speaker Cyan Rose Quinn

Joining the Center for Baptist Leadership founder on the agenda for the daylong conference will be a woman, previously identified for her neo-Nazi ties, who is now pushing for “creative” ways to turn America into a White ethnostate.

Cyan Rose Quinn—whose topic is listed as “They Gotta Go Back: The Remigration Cure”—serves as spokesperson for a white nationalist group known as the White Papers Policy Institute. As I previously reported, the group’s website includes proposals for convincing Black Americans to leave the country.

“Overall, I’m definitely in favor of the secession of the non-White population back to their countries of origin,” Quinn said in one podcast I discovered.

Quinn and Wolfe were both part of the same True Texas Project conference back in February.

True Texas speaker C.Jay Engel

Then, there’s Tennessee-based Christian nationalist C.Jay Engel, a right-wing podcaster and social media provocateur known for controversial views in which he argues that White Protestants, with few exceptions, are the true Americans.

Engel, who has appeared at other events with William Wolfe, is scheduled to speak on the topic: “Ourselves & Our Posterity: Protecting Our Legacy.”

Engel has claimed Jews “as a collective have largely operated at odds with the Old American way of life, rooted as it is in European Christendom” and argued that “antisemitism is actually just a bogeyman.”

Earlier this year, he teamed up with a Pennsylvania man who republishes Nazi-related books to create a non-profit group—the White Civil Advocacy Project—that claims it advocates for the rights of people of his race. He has called for deporting non-White Americans of foreign ancestry like Vivek Ramaswamy.

[b]The right-wing figure recently defended the white nationalist Patriot Front, saying the group “has done nothing wrong and they seem [to] operate with discipline, integrity, patriotism, and moral clarity about their goals.”

And Engel has refused to condemn political violence—if the violence is being carried out by his slice of the political spectrum.

“I think it’s morally justified now,” he wrote in a June post on X. He added, “But it’s not prudent at all. We are not organized and we have no leader yet. So political violence is something I am currently not on board with.”

In another post, Engel laid down his principles: “For my enemies: violence is never the answer. For my friends: we must restore order at all costs.”

True Texas speaker Chris Russo

Also joining CBL founder William Wolfe at the True Texas conference is Chris Russo, president of Texans for Strong Borders. His topic: ”the impact of legal immigration and the key laws that have gotten us to where we are.”

A 2023 Texas Tribune exposé by veteran investigative journalist Robert Downen identified Russo as “a prominent, anonymous figure in Nick Fuentes’ white supremacist movement” who operated under the username “Optics Respecter.”

Russo had been photographed in Texas with Fuentes who, the article noted, is “an avowed admirer of Adolf Hitler and misogynist who has encouraged his followers to beat women.”

According to the trbune;

“The Optics Respecter’s various social media accounts are replete with posts railing against Black people, immigrants and women. They contain slurs against LGBTQ+ people and people with disabilities; claims that women should not be allowed to vote; and screeds against a multiracial society.

“The Optics Respecter account was banned from Twitter in 2022, but has remained active on Gab, a well-known haven for Fuentes’ movement and other far-right figures. Many of the posts have been in defense of Fuentes or parroted his vitriolic disdain for women, the LGBTQ+ community and non-white people.”

Russo reportedly did not respond to Downen’s “repeated requests for comment.”

Trump rips Pirro decision after DOJ drops Reflecting Pool case: ‘I don’t agree’

President Trump called out U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro on Saturday for agreeing to dismiss the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool vandalism case against former Olympian David Hearn.

The Justice Department moved to drop the case on Friday, finding that the damage to the tidal basin resulted from a “rushed and botched installation,” not alleged vandalism. Trump a day later distanced himself from that decision.

“I disagree 100% with Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, on the Reflecting Pool,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. “I don’t know what she was thinking? To me, it was a pure case of VANDALISM, that included the grass, which had a big 86 47 emblazoned in giant letters on it, and other elements of the surrounding area.”

Hearn was indicted earlier this month after prosecutors said he “forcefully and violently” ripped the bottom liner of the pool but pleaded not guilty to the felony charge of destruction of property.

Pirro’s office noted in its filing that the pool’s issues were a result of over spraying and delamination.

“Specifically, the newly released documents reveal that work on installing the lining almost immediately fell behind, due to a combination of very rainy and windy weather, repeated failures of testing on the sealing of the expansion joints, and delays in obtaining sealing product at the worksite,” prosecutors wrote in the filing.

The administration faced heavy scrutiny over the project after the “American flag blue” paint began to peel and an algae bloom formed in the basin. It was drained more than once since the renovation began for repairs.

Trump in his latest post did not dismiss the issues but maintained his argument that Hearn was responsible for some of the damage.

“There may have been some contractor difficulty, but the major damage was caused by VANDALS,” he wrote.

In a separate post, the president shared a video of the alleged incident, stating that the “material is being cut with a knife or a box cutter, for all to see!”

Prosecutors on Friday noted that the section Hearn was accused of tampering with was not in the area where the vandalism likely occurred. It was also reported that a National Park Service engineer raised concerns about peeling days before the ex-Olympian was arrested.

Donald Trump Suffers 19th Straight Defeat in Voter Roll Campaign

The Trump administration has suffered its 19th consecutive courtroom defeat in its nationwide effort to obtain sensitive voter registration records from states after a federal judge dismissed the Justice Department's lawsuit against Illinois.

U.S. District Judge Colleen Lawless ruled Friday that the Department of Justice (DOJ) lacked the legal authority to force Illinois election officials to turn over the state's unredacted voter registration database, dealing another blow to one of the administration's election integrity initiatives ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, as reported by Democracy Docket.

Lawless dismissed the case with prejudice, meaning the department cannot refile the same claims in the district court, though it could appeal the decision.

Newsweek contacted the DOJ and the Illinois State Board of Elections via email on Saturday for comment.

Why Did the Justice Department Sue Illinois?

The Justice Department sued Illinois after state election officials declined to provide its complete statewide voter registration database in response to a federal request. The administration argued the records were necessary to determine whether the state was complying with federal election laws, including requirements to maintain accurate voter rolls.

The ruling leaves the administration without a district court victory in any of its lawsuits seeking expanded access to state voter registration records. According to Democracy Docket, Illinois marks the 19th consecutive defeat for the administration in its nationwide litigation campaign and comes just days after a federal judge dismissed its New Jersey case.

Why the Judge Dismissed the Lawsuit

In the ruling, Lawless concluded that the Justice Department lacked the statutory authority to compel Illinois election officials, including Illinois State Board of Elections Executive Director Bernadette Matthews, to turn over the records it sought.

The judge found that while the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) requires states to make certain records relating to voter list maintenance available for public inspection, it does not require them to disclose their complete statewide voter registration databases or confidential voter information.

The 14-page opinion states that the Attorney General sent a demand to Matthews stating: "Pursuant to the foregoing authorities, including the CRA, the Attorney General is demanding an electronic copy of Illinois’s complete and current [Voter Registration List]. The purpose of the request is to ascertain Illinois’s compliance with the list maintenance requirements of the NVRA and HAVA." Citing privacy laws, Matthews refused to provide the Attorney General with an unredacted copy of the list.

Lawless also rejected the administration's argument that the Help America Vote Act gave the federal government further authority to obtain the records.

Voter Rolls

The Illinois case is one of a series of lawsuits filed by the Trump administration after states refused to provide unredacted voter registration databases.

The DOJ has said the records are needed to verify that states are complying with federal election laws and properly maintaining accurate voter rolls. Administration officials have argued the information could help identify ineligible registrations, including those involving noncitizens, and support investigations into potential election law violations.

According to court filings, the administration sought more than the voter registration information typically available to the public. Several states have said the requests included sensitive personal data, such as driver's license numbers or partial Social Security numbers, prompting concerns over voter privacy and cybersecurity.

State officials have argued that federal law does not authorize the Justice Department to compel the release of that information and that complying with the requests could expose confidential voter data.

A Nationwide Losing Streak

Illinois is the latest in a string of courtroom losses for the administration's voter roll campaign.

As previously reported by Newsweek, federal courts across the country—including district courts in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Wisconsin, Maine, Arizona, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Oregon, California and Michigan, as well as the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit—have all rejected similar lawsuits brought by the Justice Department seeking statewide voter registration records.

The Illinois ruling means the administration has now lost all 19 of its district court cases challenging states that declined to provide the requested records.

Although the Justice Department can appeal some of those rulings, the decisions have so far limited the administration's efforts to obtain nationwide access to state voter registration data.

What It Could Mean for the Midterms

The legal setbacks come as the Trump administration seeks greater federal oversight of election administration ahead of the November 2026 midterm elections.

If the administration is ultimately unable to obtain the voter databases it has requested, it could hamper efforts to conduct nationwide comparisons between state voter registration records and federal databases as part of wider election enforcement initiatives.

Supporters of the administration's approach argue that stronger oversight is needed to ensure voter rolls are accurate and that states comply with federal law.

Critics, however, say the lawsuits stretch beyond the authority granted by Congress and warn that wider access to sensitive voter information could raise privacy concerns and encourage aggressive voter roll maintenance practices that risk removing eligible voters.

While the Illinois decision represents another significant setback, the administration could still ask an appellate court to review the ruling as it continues its effort to expand federal access to state voter registration records ahead of the midterms.

President Donald Trump publicly broke with one of his closest political allies Saturday, criticizing U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro over her office’s decision to drop a high-profile vandalism case involving the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.

Trump rejected the Friday decision from Pirro’s office to move to dismiss felony charges against former Olympic canoeist David Hearn after prosecutors concluded that newly disclosed evidence showed the damage to the pool stemmed largely from flawed contractor work rather than vandalism.

“I disagree 100% with Jeanine Pirro,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “I don’t know what she was thinking?”

Pirro’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The president insisted the incident “was a pure case of VANDALISM,” arguing that while there “may have been some contractor difficulty,” the “major damage was caused by VANDALS!” Trump pointed specifically to large “86 47" lettering emblazoned on the grass surrounding the pool as evidence.

The public rebuke was a rare display of disagreement between Trump and Pirro, a longtime ally and former Fox News host whom he installed as the top federal prosecutor in Washington last year.

On Friday, Pirro’s office said the Department of the Interior was at fault for the charges brought against Hearn, writing that her team would’ve refrained from bringing the initial indictment had the agency been more forthcoming about information it had.

“It was not until after the return of the indictment, that the DOI provided additional documents to the USAO-DC indicating that damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in June 2026 was the result of flawed installation by the contractor, Atlantic Industrial Coatings (“AIC”), and the rush to complete the project prior to events associated with the America 250 celebration in the weeks surrounding Independence Day 2026,” Pirro wrote in the motion to dismiss the charges.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum came to the defense of his agency, writing on X Saturday that “the evidence is clear, vandals have repeatedly caused damage to the Reflecting Pool.”

“We also provided the U.S. Attorney’s office expert and eyewitness testimony to the damage done by vandals and provided every piece of evidence they asked for in the requested time line detailing each area of damage at the pool,” he wrote.

The disagreement also underscores how personally invested Trump has become in the Reflecting Pool saga. The president has repeatedly cited the incident as an example of vandalism against federal property, using it to argue for tougher punishments and more aggressive prosecutions. His post Saturday showed he remains unconvinced by his own Justice Department’s conclusion that contractor failures — not vandals — were primarily responsible for the damage.

Capital One Financial hit back on Friday against a lawsuit over its ⁠decision to close the Trump ⁠Organization’s bank accounts ​years ago, stating that it did so after a review by anti-money-laundering experts.

The disclosure marks the first time a bank has formally tied money-laundering concerns to Donald Trump’s family business. Capital One is seeking to dismiss the case by casting doubt on claims of illegally debanking – or denying services on religious or political grounds – the Trump Organization.

The Trump Organization and ⁠Capital One did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Capital One has never accused the Trump Organization of money laundering. ​But Friday’s filing argues that “documents and Plaintiffs’ own ‌allegations make clear that Capital One closed ‌Plaintiffs’ accounts for anti-money laundering (‘AML’) reasons.

“The closures were the result of months of analysis and a careful review by ‌Capital One’s AML team in accordance with bank policies and regulatory guidance.”

Capital One gave notice of its plans to close more than 300 Trump-affiliated bank accounts in March 2021.

The Trump Organization and Eric Trump, the president’s son, filed a lawsuit in March 2025 in a Florida federal court, alleging the accounts were closed because of Capital One’s “woke” beliefs and its desire to benefit from the political mood after the 6 January 2021 riot at the US Capitol.

Capital One said in Friday’s filing that the Trump Organization’s allegations of political pretext were “misguided” and “based on cherry-picked quotations unsupported by the full context” of documents submitted to the court.

“The transaction patterns identified by Capital One are among the types of activity flagged by federal banking guidance,” the filing said.

Since the start ⁠of Trump’s second term, his administration has put pressure on some large banks, echoing conservative complaints ​that the institutions are deliberately targeting ​the political right. Trump signed an executive order in ​August 2025 barring discriminatory debanking.

In January, Trump filed a suit against JPMorgan Chase on the same ​grounds, underscoring the fraught policy ‌environment Wall Street is ​navigating during the president’s second ​term. In 2019, during his first term, Trump sued Capital One and Deutsche Bank in an attempt to prevent them from sharing financial records with Congress as part of a probe led by Democratic lawmakers.

Trump DHS chief under fire from conservatives after immigration speech ignites backlash

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin is facing a conservative backlash after reaffirming his opposition to amnesty in a social media post, with critics arguing the hardline message contradicted comments he made hours earlier during an immigration speech in Oklahoma.

Hours after speaking at the National Governors Association Summer Meeting in Oklahoma City, Mullin wrote on X: "NO amnesty for illegal aliens. Ever."

"We are a nation of laws," he wrote. "If you are illegally present in the United States of America—you will be detained and deported. Period."

In a separate post, Bovino wrote that Mullin had delivered "a masterclass in how to give terrible answers during a single interview" and argued, "Now you know why we're not getting mass deportations."

Conservative commentator Robby Starbuck also weighed in, calling Mullin's remarks "a total betrayal."

During the event, Mullin argued the U.S. needs immigration reform, distinguished between immigrants pursuing legal status and those who are not, and called for changes to some employment visa programs to address labor shortages.

"We haven't had actual immigration reform since 1959. There's a reason. It's political," Mullin said. "Do you really need immigration reform? Yes, you do."

Mullin also argued the country should modernize some employment visa programs.

"If we're looking to grow our economy, then we need to look at making more permanent solutions," he said, adding that "there's a way to utilize labor where we're not having the participation rate we need to... and we can plug those holes."

At the same time, Mullin repeatedly emphasized that immigration laws must be enforced.

"If you have a criminal background, we're not making exceptions for you," he said. "There are zero exceptions."

Mullin added that immigrants who entered the country illegally or overstayed their visas without pursuing legal status could not expect relief.

"There's nothing I can do for you," he said.

The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.

The intentional slaughter of tens of thousands of innocent civilians doesn't make you "more safe". If anything it fuels the hatred and contempt of the next generation of terrorists. U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert’s son Tyler Boebert has been arrested and faces charges of sexual exploitation of a child, according to court records.

The case originates out of Garfield County in Western Colorado. Tyler Boebert, 21, faces five counts in total: three charges of sexual exploitation of a child and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. All of the charges are felonies and are alleged to have happened in 2024.

The Denver Gazette has requested the arrest affidavit from the Garfield County courts. He was arrested last week by the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office.

This is not the first time Tyler Boebert has had a run-in with the law.

I get it, bad things happen in war. Mistakes are sometimes made. None of this was a mistake. It was on purpose. The intentional killing of women, children, and any other civilians during an armed conflict is a war crime under international humanitarian law as well as the Geneva Convention.

This isn't up for debate. You promote slaughtering women and children. Nobody has to "defend themselves" against the women and children of Gaza. Claiming otherwise is nothing but supporting war crimes plain and simple.

The core 1949 Geneva Conventions have been ratified by 196 states, achieving universal participation by all United Nations member states, UN observer states, and the Cook Islands. According to the Geneva Convention Netanyahu's actions are war crimes.

Human rights groups sue Trump administration over ICC sanctions

Four human rights groups are suing the Trump administration over its economic pressure campaign against the International Criminal Court (ICC), arguing that sanctions against judges, prosecutors and others are unlawfully interfering with their international criminal justice work.

The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in New York by the American Friends Service Committee, the Center for Constitutional Rights, Human Rights Watch and the Open Society Institute, which claim they have been forced to scale back human rights and legal work because of the administration’s actions.

“The Sanctions Regime has been exceptionally disruptive to the international justice system as a whole and caused serious harm to the global human rights community,” attorneys wrote. “Individuals and organizations, including Plaintiffs, have been forced to cease engaging as they had before with the ICC or the designated individuals and organizations because of the risk of severe civil or criminal penalties, or in the case of non-U.S. citizens, designation for sanctions themselves.”

At the center of the lawsuit is an executive order that President Trump signed last year in February that accused the ICC of engaging in “illegitimate and baseless actions” by pursuing war crimes cases against Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, for alleged human rights abuses in Gaza.

It resulted in the State Department issuing sanctions against ICC prosecutors, judges, Palestinian human rights groups and Francesca Albanese, an Italian lawyer who serves as the United Nations special rapporteur for the Palestinian territory.

The complaint argues that this “financial death penalty” has caused “grave damage” to the ICC’s ability to prosecute perpetrators of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

It is the second lawsuit challenging the executive order in as many months. Three of the court’s judges have also sued to block the sanctions against them.

“The fact that so many leading human rights and humanitarian organizations have come together to challenge Trump’s unlawful executive order demonstrates the widespread harm it is causing across civil society groups dedicated to bringing those responsible for grave crimes to justice,” said Andrew Loewenstein of Foley Hoag LLP, the lead counsel on the most recent lawsuit.

“The plaintiffs are seeking an end to this sanctions regime, which transgresses the president’s authority and violates international and US law, including the rights to freedom of expression and religion,” he added.

The Hill has reached out to the State Department for comment.

The U.S. never ratified the Rome Statute, the founding treaty that established the ICC in the early 2000s, and therefore is not party to the tribunal, which is based in The Hague, Netherlands.

Trump has been deeply critical of the ICC, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a diplomatic effort last month to “dismantle” the body, accusing it of posing an “intolerable threat” to U.S. sovereignty.

“Using all the tools at our government’s disposal, working beside every ally with whom we can make common cause, we will dismantle the ICC — brick by brick, if necessary,” Rubio previously wrote in an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal.

Kennedy Center votes to restore Trump’s name and close for 2 years, challenging a judge’s order

WASHINGTON (AP) — The battle over the Kennedy Center’s future escalated Thursday as President Donald Trump’s allies on the board took new steps to commemorate him with physical changes to the iconic performing arts institution that could defy a federal court order.

During an hourslong meeting that was conducted virtually, the board voted to add Trump’s name to the building’s facade so it would read “The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated By President Donald J. Trump.” The plaza in front of the building would be named after Trump and most of the space at the venue would be closed for two years to allow for substantial renovations.

The changes, described by Rep. Joyce Beatty, an Ohio Democrat who is an ex-officio board member, and her lawyers, amount to a dramatic test of U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper.

He ruled in May that letters affixed to the building that spelled out Trump’s name were added illegally and he ordered their removal, a decision that the Republican administration failed to persuade courts to overturn. At the same time, Cooper blocked a two-year closure that was set to take effect July 5, saying an earlier board vote authorizing the shuttering was “ill-informed and seemingly preordained.”

“This latest development is a transparent effort to circumvent the Court’s ruling, and flies in the face of the statutes that Congress passed,” Beatty said in a statement. “I will continue to fight for this treasured national monument.”

A Kennedy Center representative did not respond to a request for comment.

Much of Thursday’s board meeting was expected to focus on the extent of closures required to allow for renovations that the Kennedy Center’s management says are needed to improve safety. In response to the judge’s criticism of the earlier vote, the institution’s leaders said they would provide the board with three options to consider.

They included a complete closure or a partial closure that would allow “some continued public access and limited programming in spaces unaffected” by the work. A third option would “consider a highly limited series of phased closures to address only the Center’s most serious infrastructure needs while scheduling and maintaining a full slate of programming.”

Ultimately, the board decided to close the building for two years while leaving the potential for some degree of programming to still happen in an outdoor space known as the Reach. The decision to move ahead with the two-year closure, in addition to the moves to memorialize Trump, could revive questions about whether the board seriously considered the full range of options, a point Democrats emphasized after the meeting.

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, a Rhode Island Democrat who is also an ex officio board member, criticized a “sham meeting.”

“What happened today was nothing more than a rubber stamp on a decision the President made months ago that the Board already tried to effectuate without doing proper due diligence,” he said in a statement.

The Kennedy Center has become a metaphor for presidential power

During Trump’s second term, the Kennedy Center has become an unlikely — and highly visible — metaphor for presidential power. While he largely ignored the institution during his first term in Washington, Trump moved quickly to oust its leadership when he returned to office in January 2025 and replaced it with a board of trustees that named him chairman.

His name was quickly added to the building, before coming down in June in response to Cooper’s order. The area where it once stood is now covered by a massive tarp.

The Kennedy Center moves are part of Trump’s broader push to reshape the physical landscape of the nation’s capital in ways that have few modern parallels.

He demolished the East Wing of the White House and is building a controversial ballroom in its place, though an appeals court ruled last week that construction should stop because Congress didn’t approve the project. Trump has said he will take the case to the Supreme Court.

His remodel of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has also stumbled after algae returned and U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro refuted his claims that a vandal was responsible for the damage.

Meanwhile, Trump is planning extensive renovations of a golf course in East Potomac Park, which could significantly reduce the public’s access to running and biking paths. He is also moving forward with a triumphal arch that will sit near Arlington National Cemetery.

Trump has derided the Kennedy Center as “rusted, rotted, and rat and bug infested” and threatened to hand the building over to Congress after Cooper rejected the closure and the addition of the president’s name to the building.

The institution’s leadership has argued that it’s in genuine need of repair and updating.

Matt Floca, the Kennedy Center’s executive director and chief operating officer, guided a group of journalists through the building in April, highlighting severe water damage that he said corroded steel in some places as thin as tissue paper. Some pieces of equipment, including several 800-ton chillers that help cool the building, are decades old and in need of replacement.

At the time, Floca said he considered doing the repairs individually but insisted it was his recommendation to Trump to close the building and move forward with the renovation all at once.

“When the president asked, ‘How do you make these projects the best? How do you make them really excellent and deliver them efficiently?’ My recommendation was you close the building and you do everything over a definite period of time, two years,” he said.

More recently, the legal battles became the subject of barbs and jokes as comedian Bill Maher accepted the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in late June. At the start of the program, Pamella Roland DeVos, a Kennedy Center trustee appointed by Trump, described the institution as a “national cultural center open not just for some but for every American patron who wants to experience the greatest art and expression the world has to offer.”

“The responsibility that comes with it is one our board takes very seriously,” she said.

House Republican says Congress ‘should do a little more’ for the rich

Wisconsin’s Glenn Grothman, up for re-election in November, says he believes more should be done to support America’s wealthiest citizens

Wisconsin Republican Rep. Glenn Grothman has argued that Congress “should do a little more” to help wealthy Americans.

The six-term congressman, 71, a Donald Trump loyalist, spoke up for neglected U.S. elites Thursday during a panel discussion on the economy in Troy, Michigan, with that state’s GOP gubernatorial candidate Rep. John James, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and other officials.

As the conversation pivoted to Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill, passed in July 2025, Grothman insisted the mammoth tax and sending initiative was intended to benefit “the average guy.”

“Don’t let anybody tell you that people running, uh, Congress right now are looking out for the rich,” he said.

“Actually, I think we should do a little more for them, but, you know, right now, uh, we are doing all we can to help the middle class, right?”

“If I was designing a tax cut for the rich, I wouldn’t talk about overtime,” he continued. “I wouldn’t talk about car loans, right? We are aimed at helping the average guy.”

The bill in question was strongly opposed by Democrats – who refused to vote through its cuts to assistance programs for low-income families, including Medicaid and free school meals – with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries delivering a near-nine-hour filibuster trying to prevent its passage.

It squeaked through anyway, passing the House 218-214 and the Senate 51-50 thanks to a tie-breaking vote from Vice President JD Vance, with not a single vote coming from the opposition and two Republican congressmen, Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie and Pennsylvania Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, refusing to back it.

CNN data analyst Harry Enten reported Saturday that Trump’s signature bill has since added $4 trillion to the national debt and ranked government spending as his fourth biggest area of declining support, saying his approval rating on that subject had dropped from 34 percent to just 12 percent.

“A 22 percent drop. Woof!” the commentator remarked, joking that the New York Yankees are more popular in Boston than Trump is trusted with the public purse.

Grothman is up for re-election in November’s midterms against Democratic challenger Brad Smith and is no stranger to controversial public statements.

During Joe Biden’s single term in May 2023, for instance, he complained on the House floor that the 46th president was not nominating enough straight “white guys” to be judges, saying only five of the 97 names he had put forward were caucasian males and that two of those were gay.

35 of the judges confirmed were white males.

When Biden was succeeded by Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential race, he suggested that opposition voters felt “they have to stick with her because of her ethnic background."

More recently, he has defended Trump’s now-scrapped “slush fund” to make payouts to alleged victims of “weaponization” by the Department of Justice and, speaking on Newsmax, delivered a Hall of Famer on Iran, declaring: “Sometimes they don’t act like they lost this war.”
