When I went to school learning came from a few sources.
Parents, teachers, books, instructions. Getting a college degree opened doors. If you worked in the summer. You could pay tuition.
Today anything you wish to learn is instantly available if you are motivated.
My daughter is 45 and just received a Phd. She had a MBA. She has $200k in student debt.
College costs today are way out of line. Progressive employers want motivated young people who show initiative and digital tools.
Going to college and taking required courses that have nothing to do with what you want to do is costly in time and money.
AI is replacing many jobs that before needed a college degree. Computer sciences, programming etc.
I have two grandsons. One is 20 and is taking courses in EMT while going on real calls. Direct hands on experience. A job AI cannot replace.
The fourteen year old is in 8th grade. Every course in middle school he was put into advanced classes. Next year as a freshman he will begin taking college courses and could earn an Associate Degree and get a Hope Scholarship while in high school. After that it is up to him.
Education today is all about how bad you want it not how much money you have. It is not secrets that colleges can sell you.
College today offers little beyond networking with people who could help down the line. The college drop outs of Harvard found networking to students who shared interests more valuable. It led them to become future entrepreneurs.
It is a different world. Young people who wish to carve their own path now have a chance to do just that.

It insures you take on a huge amount of dept which makes it much harder and take much longer for young people to be able to afford buying a house and starting a family. In the long haul if you choose the right career path it will certainly pay off. But it's a heavy burden to take on at the beginning of your adult life.

College has constantly grown in cost, because the government is willing to finance almost anyone. I went to YSU back in 2004 and 2005. Annual tuition was somewhere around $6000, and has almost doubled since. Just crazy.
I'd rather take on an apprenticeship and learn a trade.
Unless you are getting a very in demand degree, college is a poor, and costly, choice for many.

Agreed. College/University is not in the education business. They are in the business of education. There's a difference.
Some jobs you NEED that degree, some, you don't.
2 examples: RN degree from a state college. Right around $100,000 (depends on where you go. You can also get a 2 year RN degree at a community college for much less, I know, but that degree, while good, is not as good as the 4 year.)
In year 2, you're making $70-80 thousand.
Second example: Go to a career center your last 2 years of high school. Nephew - grew up working on engines, etc. Can fix anything. Graduated (instructor even said "I just let him do his thing. He needs no instruction.")
Got a job for a large road construction company. Mechanic. Last year? $110,000.00. Yes, he works a lot of overtime - but he's young, single, and wants to. Great retirement after 35 years or so, IF he wants.

If you are motivated you can learn as much as you want.
Robotics are coming into play. Some surgeries are done by robots.
Finding work going forward is working with AI not being replaced by AI.
The young people of today face hard decisions and challenges.
It will take an aggressive approach and determination.
