Pentagon says the firing squad execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan will be livestreamed KONSTANTIN TOROPIN, ERIC TUCKER and CLAUDIA LAUER Updated Thu, October 8, 2026 at 5:09 PM EDT Firing squad execution of Ft. Hood shooter will be livestreamed, Pentagon saysScroll back up to restore default view. WASHINGTON (AP) — The firing squad execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan will be livestreamed, the Pentagon said Thursday, a stunning revelation about plans for the first military execution in more than 65 years after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had described it as being "public." The Army announced this week that the execution would take place at Fort Hood on Dec. 3 after Hasan was convicted of killing 13 people and injuring 32 others in a shooting at the military base in 2009. Hegseth, speaking to the conservative TV outlet Real America's Voice on Wednesday, said, "We'll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it's public." Officials in the Pentagon clarified Thursday that the execution would be livestreamed and that more details would follow. The revelation from Hegseth about the public nature of the execution — let alone one as violent as a firing squad — has raised further questions about how the death penalty is carried out in the U.S., especially after the botched lethal injection of Christa Pike in Tennessee. Experts offer mixed reactions on the plan Hasan could choose to resist execution and file a habeas petition — a legal request to review the legality of a detention — in civilian court, which could significantly delay the execution, experts said. "It frankly might outlast the current administration, and who knows if the next one will have the same penchant for executions," said Eugene R. Fidell, a visiting lecturer at Yale Law School specializing in military law. Deborah Denno, a death penalty expert and law professor at Fordham University, said livestreaming an execution could make the process "much more transparent" and inform the public about all that capital punishment entails. Those are benefits that she said would be useful at a time when Pike's botched execution has raised fresh questions about the manner by which criminal defendants are put to death for their crimes. "I think it could possibly be a good idea because it would be transparent and the public would be fully aware that it's happening," she said. When many states have had difficulty carrying out lethal injections due to difficulty accessing drugs or finding medical professionals willing to participate in executions, firing squads are coming to be seen as a less inhumane alternative, said Brenner Fissell, a professor at Villanova Law and vice president of the National Institute of Military Justice. "Firing squads can be a quicker, cleaner, more precise way to execute a prisoner," he said. "I don't think that's what's motivating this. There's a perceived masculinity and military-ness to firing squads that is part of the aura Hegseth is trying to emphasize — the 'lethality culture.'" Elisabeth Semel, co-director of the Death Penalty Clinic at UC Berkeley Law, said Hegseth's announcement raises a host of legal and public policy questions, including concerns for the dignity of the defendant, who will be eligible to view the execution and what the Trump administration has in mind in opting for an unusual spectacle. Though there has been long-running discussion about the idea of televising an execution, "I don't recall a situation in which it was instituted by the government. I think that also raises serious questions about what is the motivation of the government," she said. "This is a president who's about spectacle and that's, I think, precisely the message that he intends to deliver," Semel said, adding that she was skeptical that the administration had given second thought to the legal and social questions being presented by the decision. Trump has spoken out against public executions in Iran Trump, who approved Hasan's execution, has previously been critical of public executions in Iran, at times using the possibility of protesters being killed by the Iranian government as a possible rationale for military action that preceded his ultimate choice to attack Iran on Feb. 28. "We've been told that the killing in Iran is stopping," Trump told reporters on Jan. 14. "It's stopping, and there's no plan for executions." In his State of the Union address just days before launching the Iran war, Trump reiterated, "We stopped them from hanging a lot of them with the threat of serious violence." The White House on Thursday referred questions about the plans for the livestreamed execution to the Pentagon. Hegseth was asked Wednesday if Hasan had made any final requests or reached out to the Trump administration. The Pentagon chief replied: "Don't care. We'll see him on Dec. 3." It's not clear if Hasan will try to appeal Hasan, an Army psychiatrist who held the rank of major, walked into a medical building on Nov. 5, 2009, where soldiers were waiting in long lines to receive immunizations and medical clearance for deployment. He shouted "Allahu akbar" — Arabic for "God is great!" — and opened fire with a laser-sighted handgun. He also shot at the backs of soldiers fleeing toward the parking lot. Hasan said it was an effort to stop them from going to Afghanistan and killing his fellow Muslims. A military judge barred him from presenting that as a defense during his 2013 trial. Hasan was left paralyzed from the waist down after being shot in the back by law enforcement, and he now uses a wheelchair. Hasan could seek a lengthy delay of his execution, though given his behavior at trial, he may not want to. After firing his lawyers and representing himself, Hasan began his portion of the trial by telling jurors he was the gunman. He said little else over the next three weeks, which convinced his court-appointed standby lawyers that Hasan's only goal was to get a death sentence. The military called nearly 90 witnesses, but Hasan rested his case without calling a single person to testify in his defense and made no closing argument. Yet he leaked documents during the trial to journalists that revealed him telling military mental health workers that he could " still be a martyr " if executed. Attorney John Galligan, a former military judge who had represented Hasan in several civil matters following his criminal trial, spoke with Hasan on Wednesday but is barred from offering much detail about that conversation. He is not representing Hasan in his criminal case but said he's worried about his physical health under the plan laid out by officials, and that Hasan has not yet had access to legal counsel. Galligan said that according to Hasan, the commandant of the facility brought a chaplain but no attorney from either the Trial Defense Service or from his civilian defense when he was notified that Trump had signed off on his execution. Galligan called that a breach of Army regulations. A spokeswoman for the Army said Thursday that multiple attempts were made to contact Trial Defense Service attorneys, saying they made every reasonable effort and adhered to policy. "The civilian counsel was not reasonably available to be physically present for the notification on the 5th," the spokeswoman said, adding that counsel was located in Virginia but did not provide a name. The spokeswoman also said Hasan has not been kept from contacting and communicating with his counsel. Hegseth said the military hasn't executed a service member by firing squad since World War II. The last military execution took place on April 13, 1961, when Army Pvt. John Bennett was executed by hanging. Amnesty International said in its report on executions in 2025 that it knew of at least 17 public executions — 11 in Iran and 6 in Afghanistan. https://www.yahoo.com/news/us/articles/pentagon-says-firing-squad-execution-210940574.html

I'm surprised trump didn't just rename an NFL stadium "The Trump Colosseum" and bring out the lions. Or just build one named after him.
Maybe this is what MAGA means? I bet the ratings will be YUGE!
I wonder if it will be a PPV event?

US Archbishop Coakley: Livestreaming execution promotes a ‘culture of death’ Archbishop Paul Coakley, President of the US Bishops’ Conference, expresses shock over the planned livestreamed execution of Nidal Hassan, warning that a public execution would “further undermine the moral fabric of our nation.” The President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, has expressed “shock and great sorrow” over the decision to publicly livestream the execution of Nidal Hassan, the former Army major sentenced to death for the 2009 Fort Hood shooting. “Our God is the God of life,” said the Archbishop of Oklahoma City in a statement to Vatican News. “In no way can Hassan's actions be condoned, but this decision is a barbaric promotion of a culture of death and must be reconsidered.” Archbishop Coakley recalled the exhortation in St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans: “do not repay anyone evil for evil” (Romans 12:17). “The public execution even of one who has done grave harm will only further undermine the moral fabric of our nation and be a blight on the conscience of its people,” he said. He concluded with a prayer that the nation would choose life, even in difficult circumstances. “I pray for the intercession of Our Lady of Good Counsel that we as a nation may always choose life even in the most trying times and circumstances.” Execution planned for December The Pentagon announced plans to livestream Hassan’s execution by firing squad after President Donald Trump approved the execution on the recommendation of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. According to the Army’s announcement, the execution was scheduled for December 3, 2026, at Fort Hood, Texas, although further legal proceedings could delay it. It would be the first execution carried out by the US military since 1961 and its first by firing squad since 1945. Hassan, a former Army psychiatrist, killed 13 people and wounded 32 others at Fort Hood’s Soldier Readiness Processing Center on November 5, 2009. A military court sentenced him to death in 2013. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights also criticized the livestreaming decision, telling AFP that broadcasting an execution live would amount to a public execution and violate the absolute prohibition of torture. https://www.vaticannews.va/en/churc...op-coakley-rejects-execution-hassan.html

It's absolutely sick. It speaks of a sickness within people and the country that this is being done. Personally I am not in favor of the death sentence - but I it's not a huge issue for me. Putting this individual to death for his evil acts is fine... The live streaming of this is disgusting. It's essentially going to be a snuff movie/short.
It's performative. It deters no-one and achieves nothing other than panders to some real sicko individuals. If you watch it I think you are a very troubled individual.

One of the most disturbing things imaginable.
I cannot fathom this in 2026. You would think a county based up Judeo/Christian ideology that something like this could not happen.
You can separate philosophy on capital punishment in a different category. But a streaming of an execution is a reflection of a sick society.
I am disgusted by this and find it very disturbing.

Somehow it is ok when the US does it?

I don’t really see anyone on here making that argument, bro. I think a lot of us just think it’s barbaric and beneath us.
I also don’t really buy the argument that we need to show force. We did that for multiple decades combined in Iraq and Afghanistan. Israel certainly has done that. None of us are really better off for it. Arguably we are way worse for it.

Here are my thoughts on it: We hear all the time people that are for allowing abortion: If you don't like abortion, don't have one."
So, following that, if you don't like watching the death penalty, don't watch it. Simple, really.

I get what you’re saying but this is about the televising. I don’t hear any complaints about actually executing the guy. Go ahead and do it. He deserves it, IMO. We certainly don’t televise abortions as a way to prevent people from having unprotected intercourse.
Televising an execution is crossing a rubicon for me that puts us in pretty awful company.
Honestly, the more I contemplate it, I think the whole thing is a bigger distraction from some headwinds the Pentagon is having on multiple fronts and I don’t think it happens. They have us distracted, though. Bait which I am taking again, unfortunately. This is the last I’ll say on the whole thing.

It seems beyond odd that you would be ambivalent about something that seems outrageously un-American. Other than terrorists and a handful of murders on FB - the only other States to have live streamed or broadcast executions is Iran and North Korea. I wonder if you would have been ambivalent about something like this 10 years ago.

I cannot understand how this is something that anyone would not be repulsed by?
Are you effing serious?
How can somebody justify this? You mean it is ok with you that on the TV menu is a live execution?
Oh, You don't have to watch it? Is that a response?
Think about censoring **** ***. But, it's ok to watch an execution?
When in the history of TV has this been done? And now in 2026 this somehow OK?
"Let's watch Sesame Street and then let's watch a firing squad kill a human being."

Well you know how it goes. We will now follow the terrorists example of live streaming executions. If you hate what they do, do as they do. It's all the rage these days.
Propaganda vs. Live Streaming: Most recognized terrorist groups (such as ISIS, Al-Qaeda, or Boko Haram) historically choose to edit, production-value-enhance, and time-delay their execution videos to maximize psychological impact, propaganda messaging, and narrative control rather than relying on unedited live streams, which can be rapidly cut or shut down by platform moderators. It's not live streaming but they just love to show us how they execute people.
I mean if you can't beat them join them, right? It's odd how much we choose to object or not object depending on who is doing the executing.
The last physical public execution in the U.S. took place on August 14, 1936, when Rainey Bethea was publicly hanged in Owensboro, Kentucky.
• Rainey Bethea: Hanged in a parking lot in Owensboro, Kentucky, in front of thousands of spectators. Public backlash and chaos surrounding the event led most states to end open, public capital punishment.
• Subsequent Hangings: A final localized public-pass hanging occurred in Missouri the following year in 1937 for Roscoe “Red” Jackson, after which traditional public executions effectively ceased in the United States.
• Modern Broadcast Plans: Lawful executions have not been broadcast or livestreamed on public platforms in modern U.S. history. However, the Pentagon announced plans to livestream the upcoming military firing squad execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan, scheduled for December 3, 2026.
Maybe now we know what point in history the trump administration wants to go back to in order to MAGA. Thank God they have live streaming now.

I am glad the scum bucket is being held accountable to the military code. I have no plans to watch it live. I am sure that at some point it will show up on the net and in reality, what is the difference between live and on video? Seeing these things a day, week, 3 years later somehow sanatizes things?

Now that they are inside your tent, I am surprised some of you claim to be against such things when it is embedded in your culture. Do you mean how we despise the slaughter of tens of thousands of innocent women and children by Netanyahu? By "inside your tent" are you labeling every Muslim as the same? If so can we label you all to be like Dylan Roof? I am glad the scum bucket is being held accountable to the military code. I have no plans to watch it live. I am sure that at some point it will show up on the net and in reality, what is the difference between live and on video? Seeing these things a day, week, 3 years later somehow sanatizes things? We both live in Tennessee. How many times have you seen an execution ever shown on TV by the state either live or later? As a matter of fact when has any publicly shown or watched execution been held since 1937 in the U.S.? If it isn't allowed to be filmed it won't show up anywhere. I'm glad he is getting the death penalty too. He deserves it. The fact our own government has decided to make a spectacle out of an execution is something the terrorists do. When did it become American to emulate the terrorists?

I won't watch it; I have no interest. But I will be relieved this much deserved execution will finally be carried out. And yes, once again, outrage is the tail that wags the dog and no one seems to focus on the dog itself... BARBARIC:
On November 5, 2009, U.S. Army Major and psychiatrist Nidal Hasan committed the deadliest mass shooting on an American military installation at Fort Hood, Texas. Acting as a self-radicalized Islamic extremist, Hasan targeted unarmed service members, killing 13 people (including a pregnant soldier) and wounding 32 others in a matter of minutes. The details of the crime and its execution outline a calculated attack: 1. Premeditation Before the attack, Hasan spent months training at a civilian firing range and researching extremist ideologies online. He purchased a semi-automatic handgun with a high magazine capacity to carry out the assault. 2. The Location Hasan targeted the base's Soldier Readiness Processing Center. The facility was crowded with roughly 300 service members undergoing final medical checkups and administrative paperwork prior to deployment. In accordance with military base regulations at the time, the personnel inside were unarmed. Hasan entered the building, shouted "Allahu Akbar!" and opened fire.
3. The Nature of the Attack The attack lasted less than 10 minutes, during which Hasan fired more than 200 rounds. Witnesses reported that he intentionally targeted uniformed service members while permitting civilian workers to flee the area. Among the 13 people killed was Private First Class Francheska Velez, who had recently returned from deployment and was pregnant at the time.4. Legal Resolution and Aftermath The shooting continued outside the building until civilian base police officers arrived and engaged Hasan. He was shot multiple times, surviving the injuries but remaining permanently paralyzed from the chest down. During his 2013 military court-martial, Hasan acted as his own attorney and stated that his motive was to protect the Taliban from the United States military. He was found guilty on 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted murder, and was subsequently sentenced to death.

I guarantee I can do some simple searches and watch rapes, murders, beheadings; anything I want within a few clicks. This isn't like a 1978 presidential address where it's locked on all three channels, you won't have to send the kids upstairs and turn the volume down. How many of those were government sanctioned events distributed and approved by the U.S. government? Stop pretending this is somehow the same or even similar in any way. That said, I can certainly understand people being disgusted because by the reality of a military announcing it will be "live" for anyone to consume; it just doesn't move the needle much for me. Yes, our government choosing to show the same events major criminals and terrorists do shouldn't bother anyone. I won't watch it; I have no interest. But I will be relieved this much deserved execution will finally be carried out. I haven't seen anyone disagree with you there. And yes, once again, outrage is the tail that wags the dog and no one seems to focus on the dog itself... This is what it looks like when people try to pretend that people shouldn't be outraged over anything. When they try to excuse things no civilized society should ever approve of they wish to accuse those who object to it rather than face the fact it's they themselves that have lost any sense of accountability in support that our government have any resemblance of a moral compass.
The details of the crime and its execution outline a calculated attack:
Among the 13 people killed was Private First Class Francheska Velez, who had recently returned from deployment and was pregnant at the time.
That is barbaric. Just as are public executions. One does not excuse the other.

I can't believe anyone is actually defending this - SMH! It makes one wonder at what point, if there even is a point, at which they will stop supporting things that were unthinkable just a short time ago. .

No-one is defending the atrocious actions of the guilty person. No-one here seems to be trying to say he shouldn't be put to death. So those points are strawman talking points.
I also don't see how the ability to go online and find essentially anything you want - no matter how sick or depraved - means that the Govt of the USA should therefore broadcast it also.
I'll repeat - other than some FB murders, terrorists, Iran and Nth Korea ... I can't find any reference to live streaming executions/murder. Maybe my search missed something and you can add to the list? If not that's a short list of despots and apparently some are comfortable adding the USA next to them. . . . Maybe it is no surprise after the USA has been voting with the likes of Russia and Nth Korea at the UN recently.
The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.

There is a HUGE difference between something being available on the internet and crossing the screen of every TV in the country as part of their daily programming. If you don't see it, that's on you.
I was outraged when Obama's first Homeland Security Secretary called Fort Hood a "man-caused disaster"... and he himself said it was just "workplace violence". You? No?? See, everyone is different.
Watch or don't watch. Part of your Freedom of Choice. I guarantee there are hundreds of family members of the 45 killed or wounded, and 300+ service members that lived through that violence, that will be watching and applaud the fact that this monster is sent to hell. What are they? Monsters?
Again, before anyone gets it twisted: I can see how many think this is a bridge too far. It doesn't move the needle much for me. Nobody is trying to make anyone watch it. I have no desire to see it, so I make the simple decision not to watch. Glad this POS is finally getting what he deserves. Hope this may deter someone, anyone, from even considering doing something similar.

It makes one wonder at what point, if there even is a point, at which they will stop supporting things that were unthinkable just a short time ago. . Here's your classification for "supporting" something... If someone is not 100% outraged an outspoken about something, they must be supporting it. So yes, Pit, live in your fairyland where you think anyone that has even a single thing to say in support of Trump is in a cult and would bow at his knees even if he starts eating babies. I said I can understand how people are outraged, but it doesn't move the needle for me. End of story. Besides that, don't really care. I think it's crazy that nobody would even talk about the crimes this human garbage committed unless I reminded them. Then that's called a strawman! LMAO. I'll just bow out and let you all froth at the mouth.

You have given reasons in support of livestreaming an execution. You have raised zero objections to it. In case you missed it, that is supporting it. You even went as far as saying you were outraged over something Obama said and also said this doesn't move the needle for you. How much more supportive do you need to be to admit you support it? So yes, Pit, live in your fairyland where you think anyone that has even a single thing to say in support of Trump is in a cult and would bow at his knees even if he starts eating babies. You don't have to be a member of a cult to support some of its despicable acts. And as of yet trump hasn't eaten any babies.... that we know of. But maybe time will tell on that one. The crimes are well known. What this man did was a a disgusting act of terrorism. Being disgusted that our own government is following the example of terrorists and criminals by livestreaming an execution isn't "frothing at the mouth". No matter how crazily you try to package it. Trying to justify livestreaming an execution by pointing out the acts of the terrorist has nothing to do with the acts of the American government in response. But that's what many of your kind do these days. Once again you try to shift the blame to those asking for accountability even on the most basic of terms. Nidal Hasan, the former U.S. Army psychiatrist who killed 13 people and injured 32 others in a mass shooting at Fort Hood in 2009, told military mental health experts that he wanted to be executed to become a martyr. I'm sure he's thrilled they are going to livestream it as well. Playing into the hands of a terrorist is not attractive.

You have given reasons in support of livestreaming an execution. Where? I can't find any of those, maybe you can point them out for me. I think you may be imagining that... which actually, ironically, supports the very thing you quoted above to dispute.
