Other thread getting long in the tooth.... Romeo Crennel's agent to meet with Cleveland Browns about contract extension Saturday, January 19, 2008 Mary Kay Cabot Plain Dealer Reporter Romeo Crennel's agent, Joe Linta, will meet with Browns General Manager Phil Savage on Monday night or Tuesday at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., and try to finalize a contract extension for the coach, Linta said Friday. "I'm optimistic something can be worked out," Linta said. "When I meet with Phil and Trip [MacCracken, director of football administration], I'm confident we'll be able to agree on something that works for everybody." Crennel, who has two years left on his original five-year deal at about $2.4 million a year, likely will end up with a three- or four-year extension. It will be interesting to see if the new contract for Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett impacts the talks with Crennel. Garrett is believed to have received about $3 million a year, making him the highest-paid NFL assistant. He's also now making about the same as head coach Wade Phillips. Rip to stay: A source close to Browns quarterbacks and assistant head coach Rip Scherer said Scherer has withdrawn his name from consideration for the UCLA offensive coordinator job. Scherer was one of three coaches interviewed for the job by Bruins coach Rick Neuheisel. The others were Ravens quarterbacks coach Jedd Fisch and former UCLA and Auburn offensive coordinator Al Borges. Neuheisel might hire Norm Chow, who was fired as the Tennessee Titans' offensive coordinator this week and is a former USC offensive coordinator. Scherer is credited with helping Browns quarterback Derek Anderson improve this season. Anderson had 29 touchdown passes, 19 interceptions and went 10-5 as a starter. Scherer also has slightly tweaked the mechanics of quarterback Brady Quinn and the Browns have been happy with the results. Anderson, Lewis talks continue: Savage said last week that he had contacted the agents for Anderson and running back Jamal Lewis about contract extensions, and those talks are under way. Anderson's agent did not return messages, and Lewis' agent said there was nothing new to report. To reach this Plain Dealer reporter: mcabot@plaind.com, 216-999-4670

Good to keep Scherer on the squad. I never heard many negative things about the guy. May be the "why would we keep Dorsey just to coach when we all ready have a QB coach" etc. but that was just board talk. Hopefully with this continued continuity we can continue to have our QBs progress and get better.

I have been quite vocal in my defense of RAC. But, I don't know why we need to give him an extension.
My reasoning:
--He is a guy who will honor his contract.
--That contract runs for another two years.
--He is an older guy who may run into some health problems.
--It may be wiser to wait and see how the team does these next two years, rather than reward him after one good year.
I didn't see how it was fair to punish him too early, but it is also wrong to reward him too early.
Just my two cents.

I gotta agree with ya. I don't understand the big push for new contracts when you've still got so much time remaining on the current existing contract. If nothing else, what does it say about the solidity of the contracts if they feel the need to do this?
They don't take that much time to hammer out, so it's not like it is some time sensitive issue, and the only real benefactor is the agent. The coach is still just as disposable as he was before the extension, nothing changes.
It's nothing but a money ploy by the agent and a PR move... at least that is how I see it.

I agree Vers. I dont really think he is a flight risk or anything. He seems to be the guy that would want to finish the job he started as a first time head coach. I didnt really see the success of this years team as being a direct correlation to what Crennel did as a coach. JMHO of course but i still dont understand why this is a priority.

Obviously RAC is a coach who has more than paid his dues.
The organization has grown well regardless of our 10-6 record or 8-8. The progress and organization leadership by RAC has set the course of these Browns. The process is still running.
There are no cap ramifications. We wish to make a long term extension 3-4 years with an individual who is maybe elderly but as a leader not set in stone and is able to make enough changes in order to succeed.
We are making a guidelines of stability within the organization.
If ill-health befalls him - we have young understudies dedicated to this team and its cause all signed up.
We are the type of team that would do a Jones to keep his Garrett if necessary...there is no need to keep the carrot dangling that RAC will soon die.
We - Randy, RAC, Savage - have always stated that they are building a successful team for the LONG HAUL. Rewarding somebody to be involved with that long haul...its not as if we just signed or going to sign JOE POP...lol
All that means is we are rewarding RAC...even if in 2-3 years from now we want one of the Yutes to take over. We will negotiate RACs contract and buy him out....still he will receive his monetary reward for having us turn the corner. Its Randy's money that is the only thing being committed. How long was Cameron's contract in Miami? What this is simply put is a Reward for RAC's contributions.
The players like the environment we have set up...the reputation throughout the NFL towards us is changing and specifically with the players. RAC here brings stability to the organization.
Too soon, too late - who are we to scrutinize, its not as if it cannot be dealt with. But maybe some fans are not sure...if this extension is made...Randy is sure...Savage is sure. And they have all the facts don't they?

Vers, I wonder how much it really matters..
What I mean by that is, so what if they give him an extension. It's only money. And in an amount that doesn't even dent Lerners net worth..
Lets say they give him an extension of 2 additional years at $3 mill per. They are already on the hook for $2.4 Mill per year for the final two years of his contract.. So that means they are totally committed to 10.8 million..
Hell, they gave Butch Davis 12+ million when he walked.
I don't think the money matters, but I do think that the committment to RAC does matter to RAC, the players that ARE here and those that may join the team..
Personally, I think it's a smart move.. and it's really cheap, as it relates to the world of the NFL..

Now I didn't list the bullet points that you did, which are totally accurate, but in another thread, I questioned why we felt the need to give RAC an extension. Of course since I've not been in Crennel's corner, it was probably dismissed as someone who's looking for any reason to hammer the guy, no matter the results. *L*
The one quote I saw that really stuck in my craw dealt with Crennel's agent saying he's a "lame duck" head coach if he doesn't get an extension. That's complete and utter BS. My criticisms of Crennel don't revolve around wins and losses. Any buffoon can see that we didn't have much talent, and therefore can't expect any head coach to make a team with inferior talent a winner. Since this is about the question of whether or not he needs an extension, as opposed to weaknesses in his game as a coach, there's no need for me to go into that area.
Crennel's players like him and play hard for him. In my book, playing hard for the coach is A-#1 when it comes to importance. That's the barometer showing whether or not they respect the guy and buy into his program. But Crennel has shown some issues, and I just don't see how asking him to wait one more year when he's got two years left on his deal puts him into "lame duck" status The team was 10-6. Nobody can take that away from his resume. The flipside is that so many things fell into place, such as Anderson showing up, the lack of serious injuries to key players, and especially the schedule *L*
Then it occured to me that it doesn't really matter if we give Crennel an extension. In the most basic terms, it's completely feasible to say that the organization truly believes in him, and wants to lock him up for the long haul. Frankly, I don't think it's that simple. I think it's also to give the impression of continuity and stability, much the way it was when we extended Davis. In the end, if Crennel doesn't develop into a a viable HC, he can be fired and the team eats the contract. It's Lerner's money, and God knows it won't hurt him to cut a check for $10 million if Crennel has to go. Since it doesn't hurt our cap, fine, give him an extension. If it gives an impression of continuity, then I'm for it, just as long as we don't start giving him free passes. He can be axed with no reprocussions, extension or otherwise.

From the other thead: Quote:
Damanshot: Thanks
So, let me get this right, Swaped 1sts and two 2nds for Schaub.. basically a guy that when called upon did a decent job.. But if memory serves me correctly, didn't exactly light it up like DA did!
Yeah, I'm thinking a minimum of a 1st and 3rd would be the price tag for DA.
One thing to consider however.. look at the totally unexpected thing that happened in Atlanta.. Everything was fine. Vick was in place and they thought, hey, let's trade Schaub and get some flunky to take the Back up spot.... look, we can move up in the 1st and get two 2nd rounders.. wow, such a deal..
Vick gets arrested, goes to jail, doesn't play for the team and they are in a mess...
That's why Vers and I, who happpen to be in agreement on this one, are vehemently trying to explain that while Anderson does represent the chance to get back the draft picks we spent to acquire Quinn, he also represents the chance to choose between TWO very viable QB's for the future, and that making the right call at the most important position on the field is MORE important than getting the most for Anderson right now. If losing some potential draft picks is the price to be paid for making sure we keep the right guy, so be it, that's the right move.

Not much new here. If they feel the need to extend Romeo's contract...well, go ahead if it makes everyone happy. As has been said, it doesn't affect the cap and if you're made of money then it's only money.
I don't blame Romeo and his agent for trying to capitalize on a good year. He could be wearing the goat horns next year, who knows for sure.

Guys, I understand that the money won't affect the cap and that they can still replace him if need be. My point is that I don't think they need to extend his contract now. The "it's only money" argument troubles me a little.........it won't be Junior's money....it will be the season ticket holder's money. And I am one of them.

Hehehe......That's another discussion alltogether
Whether or not RAC gets his extension won't play a role in the prices of everything going up, because they will.
In a world where the have's are drawing further away from the have-not's, the have's can afford......and are willing to pay........whatever it takes to get to and see the games. Crennel getting an exension won't matter. Money will still fly out of your pocket at an acceleratory rate.

I don't mind say, a one-year extension on the existing deal, with a raise on the current contract, if it keeps peace. It might be wise to wait until next fall, and get it done then with plenty of time to spare on his present deal, but if they extend him now, no biggie.
I do agree with your point about Romeo's age and possible health issues down the road. He isn't the fittest guy in the world.

And an awfully darn hard call to make. Expecially if you haven't even seen one of them in game action. You gotta wonder if your experienced QB can take the "next step" and if the backup can take the "first step".
There's obviously holes in your starter's game. But just as sure the backup is going to have holes as well. Which one will work out for the best?
That's a big decision for a franchise who has lacked the talent and ability to win. A decision that could continue the recent success or set them back to square one at the quarterback position.
Somehow though, I'm hoping the Browns are either close or have already made a decison. Few teams have the luxury to sit on a situation taking their time to decide. There are too many variables that are out of your control and will make certain decisions for you.
For anyone who likes making tough decisions and the wheeling and dealing that go along with it, this would be a dream situation to be in. But it could turn into a nightmare if not handled well.
I have a feeling that the things we discuss in the here and now have already been discussed weeks before we even thought of them. I'd guess that they have predetermined choices that cover any and all possible scenarios and are now posturing one way or another in an effort to swing the most desirable scenario into place and maximize on all the possibilities.
As for the Crennel extension, it's no secret that I have stood solidly in the Head Coaches corner all along. I don't know if extending his contract is the right thing to do or not. There are a ton of reasons to do it or not to do it. But I certainly don't know what it could hurt. It sure can't hurt Lerner's wallet.

Perhaps, though I'd question whether or not they have enough information to make an informed decision. They obviously didn't know what they had in Anderson, as they swung the deal for Quinn. That says nothing more than all the work in practice can't tell you if a guy is going to get it or not, so they can't know that Anderson will get better, or that Quinn will get it at all. Because of that, I hope they they haven't made their decision, and will rather choose to wait.
Now having said the above, I'm certain they have allready set their own price on Anderson. If Team X which has draft selections at a certain spot make Anderson an offer if he's tendered, they allready know if they are going to take it or not. They know that the absolute worst thing that can happen with Anderson is that he's high-tendered, so they can plan for that circumstance. That part is actually pretty easy for them. It'd be pretty easy for me, hehehe. They clearly believe in Quinn, having paid the price to move up, so they understand they won't be starting over without a QB if they let Anderson go.
So the question is who's the right guy. I think it's worth risking the draft picks and letting Anderson prove himself. He's proven he could play in this league (even if it's only at so-high of a level), but he also proved that down the stretch, he wasn't anything special. Some of that was the weather, some of it was that teams had film and could gameplan against him. The bottom line was that as hot as he was in the beginning, the worm turned, and he went cold. He's a great story, but feel-good stories don't pay the bills
I'm sure they have a gameplan in place, almost like an "if-then" flowchart:
We've determined his value within the organization, and will make an offer If Anderson doesn't sign a contract with us, we high-tender him If Anderson gets a contract offer from Team X, we take the pics If Anderson signs a team-friendly contract, he's the guy for a year or two If Anderson isn't moved and only signs the tender, 2008 becomes his audition If Anderson improves in '08, we tag him or offer him a big contract, problem solved If Anderson flops in '08, Quinn has two years under his belt, wasn't rushed, gets the gig, and Anderson moves on, no harm, no foul.

It may be wiser to wait and see how the team does these next two years, rather than reward him after one good year.
But the thought process may be since the players like him so much, the extension is a show of faith so that they may be able to re-sign some guys here and there long term....and players talk to each other around the league; perhaps having the coached "inked" for 5 years will persuade a player to switch teams and come play for RAC for 5 years, whereas he may second guess it if RAC is only gonna be here for two more........
I'll be the first to admit it's a stretch, as everyone knows that a contract can be bought out and the coach axed regardless, but it still may be something that plays into it. Continuity, or at the least the impression thereof?

You give him an extension because it efectively gives him a raise and a bit of assurance that if he does get fired in the next few seasons, he has a parachure. It raises the effective dollars of his contract.
And you reward the guy who has done better than MANY expected.

There is that. Players that like the situation would be more apt to stay and more apt to invite player friends to come over (should we be interested of course).

That was a Mary Kay thing I thought.. If you go back and check the video of Savages end of season wrap up presser, he makes mention that he and Linta hadn't spoken (at least not at that point anyway) and that no attempt to contact him was made by Linta.. Cabot, in a article makes mention that Linta said these things, yet Savage said that isn't the kinda guy that RAC is.
Basically, I don't know if that comment is even accurate Toad.. I mean I know it was written about, so you DID read it,, so did I, but I don't know if it's just the loose mind of Cabot or if it was really said..
I won't get too concerned over an unconfirmed report.. Please don't give an article that says it,, I know, I read them also,,, But Savage said they weren't true.. I choose to believe him..

If they go get a coach for half the money,, your ticket prices are still going to rise.. that's gonna happen no matter if RAC gets an extension.. or not!
Lerner is worth in the area of 4.5 Billion. That's the last number I heard.. The Lerner Family, (randy included of course) which includes his sister and Mother are worth in the area of 6 Billion.. (again, the last I heard and that was over a year ago)
10 million is chump change to him and if it makes his coach comfy and his players comfy and helps move his franchise closer to a SB... He's probably willing to part with that and a WHOLE lot more..
You may want to discount the "it's only money" thing, but it is "only money" No big deal in this context....
(wow, does it seem odd to say that 10 mill is chump change or what. man that's hard to accept, but, in Randy Lerners world, it's chump change)

Yes, it's almost unbelievable that someone can have that much money.
To that end, there are two very good sides to this argument and both have merit.
I completely agree with Vers' post. Makes a lot of sense.
But if extending RAC has some added benefits in terms of stability and attracting talent, it may just be worth it.
And I think the team handcuffed themselves a little with the Chud extension. Yeah, we all know the circumstances around that, but perception is reality...and to extend Chud and not RAC might lead to a problem.
And with Lerner's billions...yeah, I can see doing it.

Just another added comment...
Often times people put too much emphasis on the dollar amount of things.
What's really important is the value.
Say we extend Crennel only to can him next year after starting 0-5. Yes, we owe him millions but the value of extending him may have already exceeded what we owe him.
That's a very basic, general statement, but it's just meant to illustrate the gist of what I'm saying.
It's often too easy to get caught up the actual dollar amount and not the peripheral value you are getting in return.

I really don't know if Chuds extension is or was or will be a big deal to RAC..
RAC has never done or said anything to make me think he worries about anybody elses situation.. He seems to be the consumate professional,,, completely focused on the task at hand and basically, nothing else.
I think he would work his butt off with or without an extension.. I cant' find a darn thing wrong with doing it.. only if the team were on some kinda slimdown budget, but come on,,, this is really not a lot of money in the grand scheme of things. and it doesn't have ANY effect on the cap either.

You may be right about RAC, but I think it's human nature to read into things and the perceived message they may/may not be sending.
By all accounts RAC is a stand up guy, but he's not immune to the same feelings all of us would probably have if we were in the same situation.

True enough.,,,
I hired a guy to work for me, he actually wanted more than what I was making. I struggled with that for a moment then realized.,. if he's that good,, he'll make me look great and smart for hiring him,, and I'll get a raise,, and that's exactly what happened.
Not having had a face to face converstion with RAC myself, I can't tell you if that's what he's thinking about Chud, but it wouldn't be the worse approach to take

i can see them doing this for one reason....
they just gave chud more cash to stay....
you know damn well at the first sign of adversity there would be talk of chud turning down a head coaching chance to stay....and romeo only has 2 years left....maybe we are gonna fire rac and promote chud...grossi could dream that up....
it also promotes continuity...fa's are gonna pretty much know they will be playing for rac....
on top of that...who knows maybe they had to give chud more than rac was getting to keep him....so they just uped racs pay too....

Maybe, maybe not.. but like I said before, I don't see RAC as the kinda guy that would worry about the money thing.. not at all.
As for if things go south, it will be the fans that will second guess RAC,, I doubt savage will...

Anyone heard him begging at all? That's what his agent is for. $2.4M while a princely sum indeed, is below standard for a winning HC, (especially when amounts like $5-6M a year are being bandied about,) which he is now, so I understand their motives. And trust, those are the motives. JMHO

i don't think rac was worried about the cash.....but what if they had to give chud more than rac was making?
the boys just gave garret like 3mil/year iirc.....if they had to give chud the same then he would have been making more than rac...
so they uped both there salaries....

Yeah, but the only thing we have that said that RAC or his Agent were even asking was a report by Mary Kay Cabot which Savage has said wasn't accurate..
So not even his agent said anything? At least according to Savage!
Racer,, don't get hung up on who makes what. I don't know this for sure, but Savage talked about that RAC was in on the decision to find a way to keep Chud happy. And I bet that in the conversation, Phil made it clear that he would take care of RAC soon.. In fact, in his end of the year presser, Savage eluded to that very thing.
I think that Savage has more than proven he's not a con man. He may, at times be a little cunning (he has to be in his job). But not a con man. I tend to think that if he says it, he means it.
It's just not a big deal at all......

Do you consider him a winning Head Coach because of this season or are you looking at his record overall. In my book he has a ways to go before he can be considered a winning head coach. He hasnt even beaten the steelers for crying out loud.

i don't think that savage is a con man....
the jist of the prior posts was "why did we give rac a raise and extension?"
i am simply speculating, that when we knew we had to ponie up more cash to keep chud...(and i doing so were paying him more than rac)...we were forced then to renegotiate racs contract and up his money, because it would look bad if the head coach isn't making the most...

As far as I know, we haven't yet! It may have already been offered, but we don't even know that for sure yet.

WOW racer,, that is speculating.. To my knowledge there has been NO info released on the the raise given to chud.. if one was given at all... all we know is that he got an extension.. Unless I just missed it somewhere...

According to Savage, we weren't being forced to do anything. Savage said he felt if was the right thing to do but made it VERY VERY clear that RAC is not the kinda guy to demand a raise..
So I don't buy into any thing being forced except maybe doing something for Chud to retain him....

NO WAY is Chud rakin' in more than Crennel...C'mon...
Tell ya' one thing tho...Be happy we inked Chud BEFORE Jones pulled a willy and gave Garrett 3 MILLION a YEAR...FOOL...All Jones did was screw the entire NFL for future Coordinator Salary demands...And screwed HIMSELF when he fires Wilson and Garrett gets the HC offer...Cause it already STARTS at prolly 5 MILLION a YEAR just because he's already gettin' 3M as an OC/Asst HC...
Jones is about the most IGNORANT in the NFL this side of Millen...
Go Browns!!!

The Garret deal is because he will be the next HC in the big D period. It wont skew the coordinator pay scale as much as you think. When there is more at stake for the organization to make sure they keep ahold of their future than you will see high coordinator dollars. It will be the exception and not the norm.

Are you really surprised by that?

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

RAC is not a lame duck ... u know why his agent said that ... ANY decent agent SHOULD SAY THAT ... his job is to get RAC the BEST DEAL POSSIBLE ... so getting the extension now GAURANTEES HIM MORE if we decide to fire him after next year OR ..... if he signs no extension we can just let him walk after the following year and his contract ends .. if we give him an extension we wil have to FIRE HIM therefore paying him for however long the contract extension is or buying him out of the remainder of the contract .. his agent is doing the 100% right thing by making up the Lame Duck crap ... ITS HIS JOB ... I agree with U and Vers .. NO NEED to extend him ... I am in the camp that we still don't know what we have in RAC .. but since the extension isn't worth the paper its written on in terms of job security and its not my $$$ being thrown away if we fire him .. I could CARE LESS if we extend him ... AS for DA ... ... 1. comparing him to the Falcons situation is a JOKE at best ... Vick is a *ic* .. ... we can't make a decision based on fear that BQ or DA will be suspended or injured so we need both of them .. thats BAD BUSINESS ... STUPID STUPID STUPID ... we also can't pass up VALUE for trading DA based on the fear that BQ cant do it .. again .. BAD BUSINESS ... and yes I know the "HYPOTHETICALS" so don't WASTE OUR TIME tellin me bt "what if" .. what if WORKS BOTH WAYS and in this case U need to strike while the IRONS HOT cause its gonna cool off .. now with that said the question is where do we draw the line at the "value" DA has for us ... for me its PRETTY SIMPLE and then starts to get gray ... 1. a 1st and 3rd ANYWHERE and I couldn't sign on the dotted line soon enough .. thats a NO BRAINER ... 2. a 1st and any day 2 pick ... NO HESITATION on my part ... where do i sign .. another NO BRAINER .. 3. a 1st by itself .. another NO BRAINER ... where do i sign .. 4. a top half of the draft 2nd and I'm in like flint .. 5. a top half 2nd and rnd 4 or 5 pick and its a green light .. 6. a bottom half second is where it starts getting murky for me .. not so sure here .. 7. anything below a 2nd and NO WAY DO I DO IT ... like I said in week 3 guys .. no one will give us what we want .... we won't be stupid and offer him what his agent wants .. and he will be here next year on his one year tender .... and then BQ WILL BURY HIM starting from day 1 in the OTA's and will be our starter for the next decade ... *Yawn* ...
