I haven't seen the $ part of DA's offer posted yet:
Browns | Anderson receives contract offer Thu, 31 Jan 2008 10:52:44 -0800
Tony Grossi, of The Plain Dealer, reports the Cleveland Browns offered QB Derek Anderson a three-year deal worth $15-20 million. Anderson did not sound enthusiastic when asked about the offer. "I'm not going to complain about it. But obviously our guys are on another (level). I'm just letting them kind of deal with it," Anderson told The Plain Dealer at the Super Bowl.

3 years worth 15-20M? Anderson isn't enthusiastic? What the ??
That is wrong on many levels. (a) Browns offered way too much IMHO (b) how could someone NOT be enthusiastic to get an offer of 10 times your current salary... dude, take the offer or get paid 2.3M this year and see what happens next year in FA...

Diam and Toad: You guys are right about the negotiations, but why are you wasting your time on that guy? You can figure out his motives, can't you?
It should be interesting to see how it plays out, but it looks likely that we will tender him. I was hoping we could sign him to a three year contract, but that isn't looking very likely right now.
It's an interesting case because both sides are protected, at least in a sense. The Browns have BQ waiting in the wings and DA has teams that would love to have his "negatives." *L*

He has a whole month to negotiate... as happy as he might be... why would he show the Browns any enthusiasm? He wants every dollar he can get. Who ever accepts the first offer?

I wonder if it's more for the dollars or the years. More years could mean more $ guaranteed, maybe.
and a belated congrats to Romeo for his contract extention.

Lemme guess? I'm one of "Brady's Brats?" I think DA is terrible?
WAY OFF.
I'm just calling it like I see it. And I see it that Savage isn't willing to make DA our franchise QB.

I agree Vers I think the Browns will tender DA, "IF" it comes to what they feel is their last best offer.
I actually don't see the Browns going past 3 years, and that could be the part that ends all hope of ever signing DA. I also think the Browns want DA here next season no matter what.
The Browns can tender DA and he will be theirs for another year, start BQ and see how he does. If he sucks they insert DA, and negotiate a long term deal at that point. It would mean that "IF" BQ is up to the starters roll the Browns would lose any compensation, but then again they would have insurance against BQ failing by tendering DA. It would be a somewhat bitter pill to swallow but it would be far worse to trade away a QB like DA and then have your poster boy future franchise QB fall flat on his face and have no place to turn too.
I think depending on how creative the Browns are prepared to be they can get a short term deal done with DA. I saw the TG article that said the Browns offered DA a contract that is from 15-20 mill, he didn't say anything about a signing bonus, I assume there would be a signing bonus?? If there is a signing bonus involved along with 6 Mill per for 3 years that doesn't seem like a bad deal to me. Factor in that DA could be playing this season for 2.562 Mill against 6 Mill plus a signing bonus whatever that may be, it really isn't that bad. PS and DA's agent could load the contract with incentives as well, or they could take the signing bonus and put a clause in the contract that states they have the right to redo his contract if he is traded, which would allow him to take the money now (new contract and bonus) then rework a new deal with another team that would give him better money along with yet another signing bonus next season. Being creative with the contract could give DA a deal that he can live with, and a contract that the Browns can live with as well at the 3 year level. Whatever the terms are for a 3 year deal, its certain in my mind the Browns will have to overpay for DA in order for him to view the 3 year deal as a good deal for him. Perhaps they will have to guarantee the total contract, something that hasn't been done before will be what gets DA to sign up if that is the intention of the Browns which I think it is.
The whole thing is pretty interesting actually, and God knows there are a world of opinions that are out there, as to who thinks what, and where it will go from here. So I throw mine on the pile with others...

It's not what I WANT Savage's perspective to be, it's what I THINK Savage's perspective is based on the evidence put forth.
As for the Quinn younger crowd association...I was applying theories I learned from my Media Analysis class. I actually brought my theory up to my professor and she said I had a legit theory.
Great...I don't want to hijack this thread, but think of Peyton Manning and Donovan McNabb, they have many fans outside of their home crowds because of their various national appeals in addition to being good QB's. Many of the uninformed like Peyton Manning because "I've seen him in all those commercials, he has to be good." And Donovan "Aww, his mom is the team mom."
Then you see Quinn doing EAS commercials, many people my age use EAS products so they immediately identify with that. It's not as crazy of a theory as you'd think...

DA has teams that would love to have his "negatives." *L*
Not just for you Vers, but a I have a question for anyone that may know.
-Do you think any teams have been in touch with DA's agents? -Can they do that yet? legally? -And finally, ( this one is kinda complicated) what would they say to him if they did want him. Would they tell DA something to the effect of------hey, we would like you on our team but we can't give up a 1st and 3rd, so sign a contract and we will try to work something out? Or would that be the conversation to be had with Phil? Then the same questions go, have they contacted Phil yet, and would they give him those same peramiters?
Just curious on how this shapes up right now?

I never said the Browns think that way (although I'm sure Vers will chime in and say the one he calls "Junior" thinks that way). I'm saying the fans partially do. Some subconsciously, others not so subconsciously.

From today's PD, Anderson wants Romo money. $30 million guaranteed????? Ohhhhhh boy... http://blog.cleveland.com/sports/2008/01/andersons_career_ready_for_tak.htmlAnderson's career ready for takeoff Posted by Tony Grossi January 31, 2008 21:51PM Categories: Browns Phoenix -- Derek Anderson is being shuffled through the crowded Super Bowl NFL headquarters by an entourage of public relations and marketing people. It is 7:30 a.m. local time and a busy day of appearances, sales pitches and high-profile interviews are on tap. He is wearing a red bowling shirt with his name on it, tan cargo shorts and flip-flops. You had to be from Cleveland to realize this was the easygoing quarterback who helped lift the Browns out of their chronic offensive doldrums. The one who hasn't quite lifted himself out of Brady Quinn's shadow. After his breakout season, Anderson's off-season is a mix of relaxed promotional appearances and sober meetings about his football future. The latter was scheduled to be discussed over dinner here Thursday night with his representatives from Athletes First, the Los Angeles-based firm headed by David Dunn. The lead negotiator for Dunn, who is serving a players union suspension, is Mark Humenik, a Cleveland-area native working for Athletes First. The Browns made the first volley in contract talks last week with a three-year offer reportedly worth between $15¤million and $20¤million. This apparently did not go over well in the Anderson camp. Asked if the three-year commitment from the Browns was a disappointment, Anderson said: "Yeah, uh, a little bit. But I'm not going to complain about it. But obviously our guys are on another . . . I'm just letting them kind of deal with it." Your guys are on another level? "Yeah. I'm not exactly sure the whole gist of it." The Anderson camp is believed to be using the new contract of Dallas quarterback Tony Romo as a guide. Romo received a six-year deal for $67.5 million. The operative number is $30 million guaranteed. The shortness of the Browns' offer restricts the amount of guaranteed signing bonus Anderson would receive. It also represents a commitment that does not shout out, "You're our quarterback for now and the future." "I don't know," Anderson said about these subjects. "I can't really complain. I just have to keep plugging away at it. It'll all work itself out." If negotiations fall short of a multiyear contract, the Browns can limit Anderson's movement as a restricted free agent by giving him the one-year tender of $2.56 million. It would assure the Browns first- and third-round draft choices if he signs with another team, or be the catalyst for a trade. "I don't know if it will get that far. We're just in the beginning right now," Anderson said. A new dynamic could be the hiring of Cam Cameron as Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator. The Ravens intend to install the same offense Anderson blossomed in during the first season under Browns offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski, who learned the offense under Cameron two years in San Diego. Baltimore was the team that drafted Anderson and lost him to the Browns on waivers while trying to get through a weekend roster dilemma in 2005. Anderson smiles slightly at the prospect of the Ravens wanting him back. "I don't have any say in that," he said. "Obviously, I enjoy the offense that we're in." Talking about his future is uncomfortable for Anderson. He's more at ease enjoying the trappings of his newfound celebrity as a breakout NFL quarterback. It started with an invitation to the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic pro-am golf tournament in Southern California two weeks ago. In Arizona, Anderson has a full slate of events through Sunday. He'll make appearances for GT, EA Sports and Burger King, and be included in a mock ESPN Hall of Fame induction for fantasy players. He was the fantasy Sleeper of the Year pick. "My buddies [in Oregon] were the only ones who had me before the season started," Anderson joked in one interview. National interviews and marketing appearances are quite a departure for the unassuming quarterback from Scappoose, Ore. "He has had a chance to prove himself now on the field, but he's not going to be pushed into doing things he doesn't want to do," said Carmen Wallace of Athletes First. "Derek is a humble, quite guy. Very likeable." Interviews are being squeezed around a charity event sponsored by G2, a new Gatorade product, in which Anderson is competing in miniature bowling with ESPN morning talk show hosts Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic. Anderson is playing along nicely. He finishes third in the three-man competition. Then there are four rapid-fire national interviews. In one, Anderson spends a great deal of time disputing that he wears a size 17 shoe. His shoe size was all he was known for before throwing 29 touchdowns last season. In most situations, his big year would be the No. 1 topic in interviews with Anderson. But on the set of ESPN2's "Mike and Mike in the Morning" show, the first subject ventured, albeit playfully, was Golic's "man crush" on you-know-who -- Quinn.

Well Ammo, from here, it looks like the Browns are looking at three years and 30 mil tops and DA is looking for closer to 60 mil. and five years.
The "medium" of all of this would be four years and 45 mil.
My question is, how many posters "honestly feel" that Savage will dole out a four year, 45 mil. contract for DA?
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

If he wants this much money I say tender him the one year contract and let him walk after that unless someone really wants him than they will give us something for him.
I still question his value at qb and I think he has over-valued himself a bit.

I don't, which is why I've been saying Savage is paying "lip-service" (for lack of a better term).
He may be serious about signing DA, but he's serious about signing DA on his terms. What does that say about how much we value Anderson? It means we value him, but we don't consider him "Our guy for a long time."
I know I'm gonna get heat for that and I know negotiations are still early, but for crying out loud, we're not gonna give him anywhere near Romo money and DA won't accept something that's not near Romo money!

Am I a tad bit slow to not understand what in the heck this has to do w/ the rest of the article? It literally looks like it was cut from a different article and pasted in the middle of this one.

Actually, I think it is 3 years 20M and 6 years 68M. I personally think 3 years 20M is too high for him. But to answer your question, I don't think Savage will dole out a 4 year 45M contract for him.
At worst we'll tender him 1st & 3rd and see how things work out in the offseason and early season. If we get a good trade offer, he may be gone. If we don't he is listed as starting QB with Brady on his heels. As we progress through the summer and into the season, see if he has improved enough to offer that kind of money. If so, offer it to him and don't let him go. If he doesn't, try to move him before the trading deadline for something or accept that you'll lose him altogether in the 08/09 offseason.

I think they were inferring (poorly) that if the Browns didn't do something that the Rats might be a place he ends up. I agree, not very good writing...

I don't think he will,, JMO,,,
EDIT:
Unless he has a Sign and Trade deal in the works,, then I guess it could happen.... I have my doubts however. Aren't we stuck with the signing bonus on trades? I suppose that could be negotiated as well.... not sure.

Yes - when a player is traded, the bonus escalates to the current year immediately. So, it'd have to be a tender/trade or a trade outright for it to make sense, not a sign and trade.

This is why I have a hunch that this 3 year deal features a first year salary that's bigger than the last two years...perhaps combined, to entice him to sign.

No way in hell. Tender Anderson. End of discussion. Let someone else pick him up and pay him that kind of money. I see too many flaws, and the guy wants $60 million? No thanks. I'll take Quinn.

It still bothers me to an extent to know how many people are willing to throw a QB that did what Anderson did this past year away.. Not that he's perfect or anything, but what's sitting on the bench may not be any better in the long run.. WE don't know for sure yet.

That is exactly the conundrum. Do we take a chance and throw a boatload of money at him to keep him? Or do we take a chance at what we have being equally as good or better and lowballing him/trading him/letting him walk?
I saw him play at Oregon State for 4 years and didn't like him out of college, and didn't like that we signed him when we did. I then happily ate crow this season, but I still believe he was a product of the offense (great protection, good running game, quality receivers) this year. Is Quinn better? Who knows. I just know that I would not throw Romo money at him right now.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but we must remember the Browns still have one tool in their pocket should DA play on a one-year offer in 08-09...that is the Franchise Tag.
If DA once again shows his value as a NFL QB in this leauge with two consecutive years of nearly 30 TDs, we could place the Franchise Tag on him to protect our rights to him.

I say tender him; he should be a little more hands on with his agents. he is not worth Romo cash.
I am having a harder time on what to do that is better for the team. Do you lowball DA and have it come back and bite you? Do you start Quinn and throw DA on the bench to lessen the value after you tender DA next year? Do you pay DA fair market value but only guarantee maybe 20-25 mil and see if DA can get us to the next level and maybe add more incentives to the contract? If we do that, we have to sit Brady for another year or two. Is that a problem? Not if we are winning
I don't like throwing a boatload of money to anyone for having one good year. It seems to change the player and they don't have the hunger once they make it dollar wise.

20-25M guaranteed makes him our starter for a long time. That would equate to somewhere around a 45 to 50M/5 or 6 year contract. Brady at that point is either our backup until his contract expires or is traded.

I say tender him as well. He played well for most of last season. I remain cautiously optimistic, but I'm sorry, one good year of football is not enough to throw a long-term deal his way. If somebody wants to give us the picks then take them.
However, if he plays well again next season, try to get a long-term deal done. If he flops, keep him as a backup or trade him.
Actually, I think the best thing for him to do is just sign the deal (or one slightly higher) that we offered him. It gives him a chance to get some money in his pocket and continue to prove himself. It's also in our best interest because we aren't taking a huge gamble. Also, if he flops next year, he will still have a nice chunk of change.
Look at the alternative. He turns down the deal, we tender him, he flops, then he has no chance of getting a good deal from anybody else. It's risky for him. He's basically gambling that he's going to do just as well as he did last year.

This is why I have a hunch that this 3 year deal features a first year salary that's bigger than the last two years...perhaps combined, to entice him to sign.
You know, that would be a means to an end. It would work to keep him here next year. Yet make him tradeable after next year given the contract number for the remainder of his contract. And if they decide to keep him after next year, his cap hit would be low. I could see that as a win/win.
At least that way, "if and when" we would want to trade him after next year, at least he wouldn't walk away leaving us empty handed.

No way in hell. Tender Anderson. End of discussion. Let someone else pick him up and pay him that kind of money.
It still bothers me to an extent to know how many people are willing to throw a QB that did what Anderson did this past year away.. Not that he's perfect or anything, but what's sitting on the bench may not be any better in the long run.. WE don't know for sure yet.
For $60 million, I'll take my chances.
He put up numbers, but I also feel he hurt us. I watch him play and just can see too many poor throws and faults. I know we haven't seen as much of Quinn, but I don't see the problems in him that I see in Anderson. I can think of a few other things that we can do with $60 million.

Okay, that's all fine and well. But he was responding on his opinion of "paying DA 50-60 mil".
So is it of your opinion that anyone who feels he's not worth "a long term 50-60 mil. contract" is in turn ..................... " willing to throw a QB that did what Anderson did this past year away.." ??????

Are you trying to say it is your considered opinion that we SHOULD pay him that?
See, I feel that is the major issue in this entire deadbate. We ALL feel that DA has "value to the Browns". It's just a matter of "how much value".
In this case, the guy responded that he thought it was crazy to get into the "sixty million dollar" range. And in turn, you suggested that you were surprised that people were willing to "throw him away".
When in reality, all the poster was saying is that he didn't "value DA that high".
So in your opinion, what would a person have to value DA at in order for you NOT to insinuate they wish to "throw him away"????

Yeah, that is WAY too much money to shell out. Sign him for a decent amount, fine. But we have holes on D that need to be fixed in a hurry, and we can't be putting all of our eggs in one basket. DA and his agent are crazy if they think we'll give up that.

Phil's initial offer is way way below market value, if market value is only Matt Schaub and his 6 year 48 mil.
A 3 year offer tells us that Phil was not including much in terms of guarantee or bonuses unless he backloads it..if he frontloads it will reduce the amount we have to spend on Lewis and FA's for the defense.. How much do we have to spend?? If it's more than 18mill I have have to think they'll frontload the contract..
Regardless, the 2nd offer by Phil will tell us if he's serious about keeping DA or not.
Whether ANYONE thinks DA has 1st, 1st & 3rd, 2 2nds, a 2nd worth of value, he indeed has some value and it would be a gigantic mistake for Phil to toss away whatever value DA does have by keeping him a season and letting him go for nothing. And I don't think he wants to just LET DA walk for nothing..
