Associated Press FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Mike Carey will become the first black referee in Super Bowl history. Carey, in his 18th year as an official, was notified by the NFL office this week that he had the assignment for the Feb. 3 game in Mesa, Ariz. The officials at the Super Bowl are chosen on merit, with the highest ranked at each position getting the assignment. Carey, who in his private life runs a skiing accessories company, has been among the NFL's top crew chiefs for a decade and has been a Super Bowl alternate, but has never been the referee. Black officials have been increasing in number over the years. This season there were 26 on the 17 crews, a single-season high. Blacks also have been well-represented in the Super Bowl at other positions, starting with Burl Toler, a former player, who was involved of several of the early games. Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press http://www.nfl.com/superbowl/story?id=09000d5d80614a4a&template=without-video&confirm=trueWOW...i don't kno what to make of this...i'm sort of shocked that there haven't been any black refs in the SB before...i didn't even kno that... At the same time i'm thinkin' this whole "first black xxx" thing is gettin old fast...whats next? First ever black Cheerleader

I'm agnostic about this stuff. I roll my eyes when they make a big deal about it, and roll my eyes when people have a problem with it.

For better or worse, they already have those.
Seriously, who the hell cares? Is the color of his skin going to change the outcome of the game? No? Then who the hell gives a crap?

Black people care. When you have relatives that were once owned by white people in this country, you make note of every new achievement I guess.
If you were black, your grandparents might still be celebrating no longer fearing fire hoses and german shepherds.

I'm going to assume you have living, or recently deceased, relatives that were slaves. If not, then drop the race thing.
And by relatives, I'm not talking great great great grandpa, or my cousins cousins great great uncle.
Would it be possible for you to leave race out of at least one of the threads you post in?
Yeah yeah, I get it. There used to be slavery in this country. And the slaves were mainly bought from other africans. What's your point?
It gets old. Slavery is over.
Sorry, I'm done being politically correct on this subject. You wanna remember the past, that's great - I'm all for it. But it seems you want people to live in the past. I won't do it.

It's been quite awhile since slavery. I'd say, its time to move on.
New achievements? First black person to cure cancer, AIDS, diabetes, that would be an achievement, refereeing a football game, not so much.

And I can talk about race w/out being black.

You are correct, it is time to move on. But if you think of how long humanity has been going on, slavery wasn't that long ago.
There are plenty of success stories among black Americans. Tiger, Oprah, and countless actors, muciscians, and pro athletes. But the truth is there are still those among them that can remember first-hand just what they have overcome. They will make a big deal over every single achievement. People need to get over it.
In my first post I said that I rolled my eyes whenever a big deal is made about this stuff. I'm definitely not a bleeding heart kind of guy. I believe in working hard for what you get and not whining and mooching. But it still gets on my nerves when people post stuff like this in the Tailgate Lot and a bazillion people get mad and uptight over it. I think a lot of people just won't come out and say that they just don't like blacks.
And USNavyDawg, look up some info on Vivien Thomas. Anyone who's life has been saved by bypass surgery sure should. They'd soon acknowledge a major achievement by a black man bigger than reffing a super bowl.

Oh, I thought the thread was about a guy getting a chance to ref in the super bowl. My bad. Right now, I feel kinda sorry for the guy. Apparently he has done a good job throughout the years and has earned the opportunity to ref in the top game of the nfl, but some see it as a "race" thing. See, if pointing out that the guy ref'ing the super bowl is black and he's the first one, fine. But then you brought slavery into it.
And, I can also talk about race with out being black.
I applaud Mr. Carey. Good for him. Regardless of race. I don't care if he's chinese.

Best, and only (IMO), answer.

I love how dramatic he is. It's so funny to watch him throw his arm around indicating the penalty. I'm just waiting for the day when he finally dislocates his shoulder when making a call.

But when the title of the article says it's about the FIRST black referee and not the countless number of white referees in a super bowl, it unfortunately became a race based article.

First black ref, fine. Where'd the slavery stuff come from?
Who was the first white ref, or who were the first white ref's in a super bowl?
Who was the first Asian, or Hispanic?
And actually, lumping all pale skinned people together as "white" is wrong as well. It could very well be that NO white person (if white is a race) has ref'd the super bowl. Perhaps they were all German-American, or French-American, or maybe even Canadien American.
See how this goes?
Good for Mr. Carey. I'm happy for him.
The slavery thing didn't need to be discussed here.
See, there is a difference between discussing race and discussing slavery. Slavery does not need to be brought in to each and every discussion involving race. But, what do I know - I'm just a white guy.
Back on topic. So, apparently there will be a full field of referees for the super bowl - that's good.

They all wear black and white striped shirts and white pants with white and black footwear. Mr. Carey seems to be an excellent official and that is all that is important...it is right there in Black and White.

I thought that all the ref's were "black and white" ANYWAY..... This kind of a "what's the big deal" point IMHO. I think that the best man was chosen and that's that. I don't care if he is green, yellow orange or has three (3) eyes....Wait a minute, on second thought, scratch the three (3) eyes.... It's really amazing how even to this day we still need to make issue of race. I thought that we ALL were members of the human race. I guess that needs to be clarified in this "PC world" that we live in...

Nice post Mike. Like I said earlier, I'm done with P.C. crap. It's a crock, a crutch for some to hold onto to justify things......blacks, indians, women, hispanics, and whites.
Sorry, I just don't see "the white man holding back..." anyone. Opportunity is there for anyone and everyone. Those that rely on the crutch wouldn't make it no matter what, in my opinion. Give them a million dollars, pretty soon they'd want 2 million given to them. JMO.

Why does it have to be about the color of one's skin? This is 2008! not 1908! I hate people that have to bring up race, and the people that are all for the race they are, and no one else! We are all human!? are we not? Why does what happened in the past have to stay in the now? People are so stupid! Get on with life! skinny, faT , SHORT, TALL RED, BLACK, WHITE, YELLOW! WTF!?? God made us in his own image.

I'm sorry guys but i am LMFAO This thread is hilarious How many of you can honestly say that you aren't even close to being a little shocked that there has never been a black ref in the super bowl? that is a little surprising to me...thats all...there is no OMG IT'S FRONT PAGE NEWS type of thing...but i seriously am a little surprised that a "first black" headline is even possible in this day and age... One thing i do know is when we have a black president(barak won't do it sadly) THAT will be news for sure...and a big deal...

I don't keep stats of who the ref's in the super bowl are - I don't know any ref's name, and I couldn't care less if they are black or not.
Sorry - believe it or not, there are some white people that don't know and don't care what the race of a person is - whether he's ref'ing the super bowl or deciding if I get a loan or not. I don't care what race a person is if they are competent to do the job.

Because I found it to be a silly question, but to make you happy...
Not only am I not surprised, honestly I could care less. It would be fine with me if every ref to officiate the super bowl is/was black. I just don't see what the big deal is, like I said, its not like the man cured cancer, he officiates football games.

I by am no means calling you racist....so don't think that when i say this..
But you have no idea what you sound like when you say that to a person who actually does care...and there are people out there that do...
Telling them how THEY should feel about something that only they can understand is pretty ignorant my friend....i'm sick of all the people on the board that say "i'm color blind, i don't see the persons skin color"
It is NOT a silly question...the fact of the matter is that this dude is BLACK...and there have NOT been any BLACK refs in the super bowl ever...this is why it's news...do i personally think it should be considered news?
Man i don't care whos black or white either...but u can't just say "this is silly" and we are all human beings and thts that..

The good news is that, never again after this year will there be a first BLACK ref in the Super Bowl. Got the coaches out of the way last year, Doug Williams got it out of the way for QB's years ago, and guess what?.....nobody still cares.

that, and i don't think the black population is jacked about it, i don't think they really care
and for mike carey himself, he should be more excited about making his first trip to the super bowl, then being the first black guy to do it...

Telling whites how THEY should feel is pretty stupid as well. After all, with your reasoning, you just don't know what it's like to be one of us. After all, if you aren't "white" you don't have a clue what it's like to be white. So, maybe back off from the "black" statements as well.

So, you don't care who's black or white, yet you're harping about race in this thread. Yes, you do care about who's black and who's white. Perhaps you can't see it, but the rest of us do.
Again, probably no one will back me up on this, and that is fine. I'm so damn sick of the "black/white" thing. I'm damn sick of political correctness, and I'm damn sick of the slavery "tude too many people bring to any discussion such as this.
It's pathetic and it's old. If someone wants to live in the past, feel free - but do it to yourself, don't drag others down your own inabilities. Yeah, your inability to deal with the present, that's what I'm talking about.

It gets old. Slavery is over.
Actually it is not, there has been and still is slavery in Africa, blacks enslaving blacks, yet no one seems to care....
Funny how that's forgotten when the slavery card is played though isn't it?
As far as slavery in America, I'm sorry if any of my ancestors were part of it, although I don't think they were since we only go back 3-4 generations. But it's over, the longer people hold onto the hate the longer it will take to be "in the past".
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

Nice post. Bears repeating.
