We still need a FA QB to challenge Anderson & Fry and provide leadership. I think we can get Damon Huard & Kurt Warner fairly cheap for 1 or 2 year contract this is exactly what we need because none of us are sold on either of the QB's now and Dorsey is a waste of roster space. What are your thoughts?

Frye is worthless and Anderson isnt' nearly ready. Huard would be a nice addition.

Rattay wouldnt be bad as well but id rather see Huard. Huard played for NE back in 03 so Romeo knows him which may give him an inside track..

Yes but with a few key FA aquisitions and the drating of Joe Thomas and the somewhat small possibility to see Bentley start, we'll have a decent oline and If we don't get a vet QB we'll up the river without a paddle with these two guys..

Anderson and Frye are both going to be in their 3rd years. We need either a solid vet to bring in and teach the kids how to prepare for a game or we need to draft a 1st round stud (there will be options for us beyond Quinn).
I don't know all the QBs that will be free agents at the end of the season but as of right now none really make me feel warm and fuzzy inside. And I would only draft a QB if they are clearly the best player in that spot (Keep and eye on JaMarcus Russell, he is a STUD).

After the game today, I put Cleveland Rants on the TV,,, Fox Sports Ohio has that show on with Les Levine and some guy named Jeter that played for the Giants back when Romeo was an assistant there.
Anyway, It's a call in show and one misguided fan called in and said he was happy that the browns lost because with the 3rd pick, they were sure to be able to get Troy Smith in the draft..... Geez,,,
I can't believe that so many people think that Charlie is the problem here.. Funny thing is, he may well be one of the problems,,,but he's certainly not the biggest problem..
When is everyone gonna get this right,,, Until we have a line that can protect a QB for more than a fraction of a second, then it just won't matter who the QB is,,,, he's gonna get killed back there,,,
Having said that, I'm not at all opposed to getting an experienced QB in there,,,,

Serioulsy, we need a new QB. None of our QB's have got what it takes. Why's that Tenn? Enlighten me...SERIOUSLY... When I look at young football talent, I look first for football skill sets. When we had tap dancing Willie, I complained that he did not demonstrate an NFL skill set. What I meant about that was this. The player needs to demonstrate that they have certain skills. In Willie's case, the first was vision, that is the ability to see the hole. The second was burst to the line of scrimmage to get to a hole. Willie was an indecisive runner. He would dance behind the line of scrimmage because because he was indecisive. This is my problem with our young QB's. I don't see an NFL skill set. The biggest one is lack of vision. You have to be able to see the open receivers. The second is timing. Once you see a receiver is open or has even slightly become open, then the QB has to have timing.Timing is the proper time to throw the pass. If the receiver becomes open, and the QB doesn't pull the trigger at the correct instant, then the defenders have an opportunity to close the gap. You have to throw the ball when 1) the receiver has a chance to catch and make a move and 2) before the defenders have the opportunity to close the gap. I'm not sold on either of our QB's. I'm not sure they have that all important vision needed to find an open receiver. Sure our line is not good, but our QB's have had time to throw the ball. I think they are adequate backups. That's it. I don't see the NFL skill set necessary for a QB.

When fans dont understand football and how it's played or how teams are built they blame whats easy to blame and thats the QB position,
Frye is fine, anderson is a good back-up we need a solid O-line,
I'm tired of hearing about drafting Smith, Qinn, ect. We need a line, protection, no QB quinn or Smith will do no better behind a line that cant pass block, when Frye has time he's a better QB than people give him credit for, he a leader and we should be looking elsewhere, but it's easy to place blame on the QB when one dosent know any better. Lets put our effort into building a line, not rotating sack victums

#10... #10.... #10.....
Troy Smith is who we need.. hope he's there in the 2nd...
if not.. we still stick w/ Frye as the starter..
I dont think Warner would do well in this AFC North.. can't explain why.. but I just dont think he can handle it..
Maybe Huard though.. He has lots of potential and showed it with his few starts..

Just a note to think about, Huard.....Had the oppurtunity to play beside one of the best RB in the Game, L.Johnson, we all know a Running game helps a QB, and Huard also had the benifit of playing behind one of the best and most consistany lines in the NFL, how many years have they played together ?....Put Huard behind our line and with our Running game and you;ll see one scared puppy, Huard in Cleveland would be hugh mistake in my eyes, Put Frye behind KC line and give him a consistant running game every week and this post wouldnt exsist.

We might sign a F/A backup QB but we will not draft another young QB IMO. Frye is still our guy and I think that Romeo will live and die with Frye while trying to upgrade our o-line and get Peterson. If Peterson is there, we draft him....if not, then I think we draft someone like Irons in the 2nd and go Branch, Adams, Thomas in the first. It's gonna be a fun draft this year.

Untill we fix the O-line it makes no difference who is getting their head removed from their body at the QB position. You know I agree w/you. But.........the qb position is the most important position on the team and I don't think either qb is the answer. I have to say that we can't completely judge either qb because of the poor play of the OL....the poor running backs...and all the drops by the wide outs....And neither has played enough games to fully evaluate. But........I don't like the early returns. We're probably going to have to address this position at some point. It probably won't be this year, but it is just one more position that needs fixed.

I know that is 5 positions and not just one, but you could say that their are 5 positions more important than QB. Even with a makeshift offensive line yesterday, Frye put in a performance good enough to win the football game. The Browns probably need a FA vet to back up Frye and help teach him the game, but the last position the Browns should be concerned with, going into the off season, is QB. Until the Browns can provide 5 offensive linemen who can do their jobs as well as Frye now does his job, not much since in addressing the QB position, other than that vet backup QB.[/color]

Seems like it is the same old stuff over and over.
But just to clear something up, make no mistake, the qb is the single most important position on a football team.

mac, please don't start your nonsense.
An offensive line is a unit. Not a position. Left tackle is a position. Center is a position. Right guard is a position. But, offensive line is not a position.
And no one has been talking about the need to fix the OL more than me. You see.......I think fixing the OL is way more important than who the offensive coordinator is.
Now.........ask any GM in the NFL what is the single most important position on the football field. They will all answer quarterback. And seeing as you are just a fan....I think I'll take the word of the professionals.
I haven't really given up on Frye. I mentioned that he needs more time and better support around him. I just have a feeling that we are going to need a qb down the road........and I said that we should not address that position this year.
Hey mac, what would you say if your boy Savage drafted Russell out of LSU in round 1?

To Mac, Peen and Vers,, There isn't really any doubt in my mind that QB is the most important position on any football team. But the Oline is the MOST important Unit on the Offense...without a doubt.
Peen, Your right, it's been said over and over again about the Oline needing work and that QB's find it difficult to succeed behind an inferior line.. And it should be repeated a million more times until the front office of the Browns get it.
Those that want us to go out and spend a high pick on Smith or Quinn are missing the point that behind our current line, whoever the QB is will get killed,,, If you want proof, just look at the number of sacks our line gave up this year,,,,I believe it was over 50 again... Granted some can be credited to our opponents secondary doing a good job, or maybe our QB's not getting rid of the ball quick enough... But that's just a few compared to the whole..
So, while I agree that QB is the most important position on the team, it's meaningless to have great QB if you can't protect him,,, JMO however

Slim pickin's in this years FA class for QB's. I wonder if we could work a trade - say, a #5 draft pick? - for Kurt Warner, or Brian Griese, or maybe even Jake Delhomme - seems to me I read they are somewhat disenchanted with him in Carolina. I think we need a QB to take over, win some games, and help teach either Charlie and Derek - or someone else that we draft this year. I'm a little tired of watching QB's (and Coaches ) gain NFL experience at our expense.

I haven't really given up on Frye. Nor I...Nor should anyone else... We DO NOT NEED a Peyton Manning QB with what we are building...And YES we are BUILDING sumptin' here even tho U NEVER SEE IT... U r the MOST NEGATIVE person I've ever had the pleasure of not tippin' a cold one with... I see alot of good things with Frye at such a young age...His pocket presence is pretty damn good...Especially when he can actually see the field in front of him when there's actually a POCKET TO STEP UP INTO... Am I enamoured with him???...NO...Is he good enuff to run this offense as we build to where we're trying to get to???...YES...Is he good enuff to run this offense when we actually have an INTERIOR LINE capable of running the ball consistently???...YES...Does he have the weapons out wide???...YES...Winslow/Edwards and Wilson are gonna be a solid solid trio for us... Edwards is a 22 or 23 year old PUNK right now...But the dude wants to WIN and win BAD...And he WILL...I want ATTITUDE out there...And he and Winny are gonna bring it...He ain't goin' anywhere but UP... And for god sakes would these constant EVERY YEAR Buckeye pimps stop the BS about taking Smith at 3 or 4...Or even in the 2nd round allready!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If these guys are as smart as I believe they are we will concentrate on several things this off season...There are ANSWERS to be had on the DL...OLB...CB...OG... Steinbach/Dockery/Davis...And I don't care what u guys say about Big-Fatty...He's nowhere near a Fatty as Dorsey is...The dude will play and be a top notch player for YEARS...If we go after him he will immediately upgrade this line...Not sure we will but we need to go after either he or Steiner...And I bet we will... Beekman BC Ramirez TTech 2 good ones who may be there in 3... Adalius Thomas FA Gaines Adams Draft Clements and Samuel FA Allen and Sands FA Branch Draft The guns are there...And we gots ALOT of bucks to throw around...34M of em'... And for those that don't understand the Salary Cap...That's MEGA BUCKS...The 1st year cap hits for a signed FA are the figure u come up with by dividing the SIGNING BONUS by the NUMBER OF CONTRACT YEARS...And add the BASE SALARY to it... MAJOR Signings could eat as little as 3M off that 34 available... We gots work to do...And I know many are fed up...But these guys are going into year TWO of actually KNOWING WHAT WE'VE GOT...Now it's time to go to work...It ain't the BLEEK BS u keep spewin'...
Go Browns!!!

I don't buy the idea we can build something that allows for an inferior qb.

No matter what you build, you need a good qb. Well BUY IT Peen...Cause it's a FACT... Look around over the years... Where's Farve been and going??? Where's Manning been??? Those r the 2 constants everyone talks about...Farve's Bowl came LONG AGO... Was Phil Simms a STUD??? NO Was Williams??? NO Was Hostetler??? NO Was Humphries??? NO Was O'Donnell??? NO Was Dilfer??? NO Was Collins??? NO Was Johnson??? NO Was Delhomme??? NO Was Hasselbeck??? NO Frye has the chance to be thrown in there with all those guys...With a SOLID DEFENSE and a SOLID RUNNING GAME...U win by running the ball and stopping the run...It's quite BASIC...And it's the REASON MANNING ain't done squat come playoff time and prolly won't get by New England or San Diego...AGAIN...His Defense SUCKS ASS...Another STUD QB for not...
Go Browns!!!

U r the MOST NEGATIVE person I've ever had the pleasure of not tippin' a cold one with... When we finally have that cold one, I'm gonna knock you right on your ass. Then, I'll pick you up and buy you another beer. And I ain't negative. I'm being realistic. Junior is a pathetic owner who made too many changes too quick. He's going to make even more w/in the next year. Count on it. Savage has done a terrible job of building this team. We are STILL weak in the trenches. We still don't have a QB. We still can't run the ball and we still can't stop the run. You can make up all the BS you want.........but you explain how the FACT that we can't run the ball and stop the run is a POSITIVE thing. Go ahead.....I dare you. Explain it away or tell me it doesn't matter. Get the [censored] outta here, will ya? Oh, and Mr. Positive..........you'll turn on and support the firing of RAC and Savage before I will. You do remember what happened when Butch was here, don't you? Save that BS for someone who is stupid enough to believe it.

You know I agree w/you. But.........the qb position is the most important position on the team and I don't think either qb is the answer. With our putrid O-line is had to get a true read on either one of our QB's. I will say this, unless the light comes on for Charlie he will not be the answer. Unless he can learn to look off the defense, make his reads and spread the ball around, and improve his acuracy, he will be no better than a backup QB during his career. I do think he deserves a year behind a better O-line to see if that can happen. Anderson has a better arm and a quicker release, but I am not sold on him being a starting QB. He also deserves more time behind a better O-line to get a true read on him. We are not going to be playoff bound in 2007 anyway and I see no need to make changes at the QB position next season when we have so many other holes that need fixed first. Will we need to make changes in 2008? Maybe but now is not the time to worry about our QB's.

Right now I have to disagree with you on that one. If BE wanted to win so bad, he would be working his ass off to improve running his patterns, fighting for the ball, and learning how to catch the damn ball. Unless or untill BE can give 110 percent effort 100 percent of the time, I won't believe the kid really wants to win.

But I for one feel you can judge a qb no matter how bad his Oline might be. I am sure the Browns can too.
You don't have to have a great O-line before you can identify a qbs weak areas. I think you have a point,, you can spot weaknesses in a QB no matter what the line is doing.. I also think that those we see in Charlie can be somewhat corrected,,, But certainly not until a line that protects him is in place.. A few posts up, someone put up a list of QB's that most of us would consider merely adaquate. Guys like Dilfer and Hostetler etc etc,, Let's face it, those guys all had glaring weaknesses,, but the one thing they all had in common was a decent to excellent Oline.. Not sure, but I think that makes my point for me... I wonder,,, what would todays best QB's be able to do behind our line? How would either Manning, in particular Payton, do behind our line,,, or how about this Phenom Vince Young or Drew Brees... Going back a number of years, I can't only think of one or two that could maybe,,,,,and it's a big Maybe,, that could produce behind this line.. Elway and Tarkenton,,, Both could run and gun... But it's still a Maybe that they could produce. So, I go back to what I said in 99.... Give me a line first,,, then get my skill guys like QB and RB and WR and TE... but the line has to be first....... Again, JMO,,,Nothing more, nothing less.

A couple of things.
You know I'm w/you on the offensive line thing, don't you? LOL...it's not like I never talk about it.
I brought up the QB issue because this thread is about quarterbacks and I have a feeling--although I'm not certain--that we don't have the right qb on our roster. We'll see.
I agree w/you on Leon. He want's to win bad?
I want to add to your list. Wouldn't a player who wants to win show up on time for meetings and practice? Wouldn't a plyer who wants to win know the freaking playbook and where he should line-up and go on each play?

Yes I know we agree on the line. Hell at my age I would give my left nut for a good O-line in Cleveland
I also think a player would not only show up on time for meetings, he would be there early and stay late. He would also have his nose in the playbook 24/7
I AM ALWAYS RIGHT... except when I am wrong.

Clicking, daman.
I am unsure about Charlie. I thought he had decent protection yesterday, he also didn't seem to go downfield enough when you consider the amount of time he had... (EDIT NOTE: Got this from a posted ABJ story: Frye threw while in serious pain all game. He admitted he couldn't throw long much, so he threw underneath -- mainly to Kellen Winslow.
Are the receivers not getting open downfield? Does he have enough confidence in his arm strength? Arm strength isn't everything. Garcia doesn't have a cannon but in the right system he's very effective. Maybe CF needs to be in a system similar to Garcia's???
In my mind, he gets one more year but in the mean time, we start fixing the line. If he shows he's only going to be a good solid backup, then we look elsewhere for our QB.
So many questions... oh and Braylon has next season to grow up produce like a #3 overall wideout should. Or he can get lost.

Yes I know we agree on the line. Hell at my age I would give my left nut for a good O-line in Cleveland As old as it is, who would trade a decent Oline for your either of your nuts It's funny,, Most of us, like you GM and Vers, Peen, Mac and a host of others really are saying the same thing.. that being that we need a line or this team goes down the tube,,, Some feel as if we also need a new starter at QB,,, hey, for all I know, that may be accurate,, I just don't know.. and the reason I don't know is that Charlie was sacked 44 times this year and as a whole, our line gave up over 50 sacks,,, I just don't know how to evaluate a QB,,,any QB with that kinda action going on,... I just don't know if we can be accurate in any assessment. At any rate,, I think we have the chance this year to do something special,, Phil,, Go out and get us a stud LT in the draft,,, then move Shaffer to RT, Bentley at some point to Guard, either find another guard or hope that someone we have is able like Friedman or Sowells and keep Fraley at Center... I'd be ok with that if it turns out to be possible....
