Just heard as I was coming home from a hard afternoon of fishing and kayaking on Sirius Channel 124...Adam Schein...this BREAKING NEWS!

K.Winslow and his lawyers are demanding a redo of his contract to recoup some of the money that he lost when the Brown's redid his contract after his injury.

Since this was a radio announcement I cannot link it up but it sounds reasonable.

We need to resign J. Lewis and lock up B.Edwards,K. Winslow our new FA acquisitions plus draft choices and although we have plenty of cap space will we hold onto D.Anderson and B.Quinn? Will we use DA to garner a couple draft choices to shore up our front 7's lack of impact.

I realize that neither DA or BQ are making big bucks but DA will ask for the moon...whatta 'ya think?

i don't think it will have an affect one way or the other. Plenty of room in the cap, and there is no way DA is going to get a mega deal from the browns.

And as for Winslow, he should just shut up and play ball. Look, he had a good year and played thru alot of pain. But, how soon he forgets that he was paid quite well the year he was on IR for his little motorcycle stunt.

It wouldn't surprise me if it was true. The way I looked at it Phil should have been working in locking up either Kellen or Edwards this year anyway, so hopefully he gets it done. Of course, Kellen may have to wait until after his next knee surgery before he is offered some more cash.

Ralphie,, I bet this thread comes down quickly.. you may well have heard it, but without a link of some type, I bet it's considered a rumor.....

Having said that, Winslow's contract was redone so that the most he would lose from his original contract was about 1 million. So even if this RUMOR is true, all he's missing is a million or so... No biggie.

I don't think this will make us trade DA. In fact, I think it might ensure that Anderson DOESN'T get a contract.

If we're giving Winslow more money, I would think we'd be more inclined to keep Anderson for 2008 under the high RFA tender of almost 3 mil, and then if necessary, 2009 under Franchise Tag for like 10 mil.

I don't think that this means we're more likely to trade Anderson, because that's entirely dependent upon what offers we receive. However, this hurts the likelihood of a multi-year contract. But, according to an update from a Columbus Dispatch writer posted in another thread, it sounds like those talks have hit a wall anyway.

Eh.. I know Kellen is good and I like him, but why does he deserve more money? It kind of sucks he has a nagging injury that has an effect on his game play and sat out a whole year because of his stupidity. If he didn't want to redo his contract, why did he allow it to happen in the first place. Suddenly he is a pro bowler and he wants more money? I just don't get it. Maybe this is just not true... who knows.

Ralphie, this may be over the top. May not be kept without linx. However, if we sweeten the pot for him it should be for incentives and some cash. We were generous after the event, and loyalty is a tw-way street. Do not think DA will be allowed to "drive" his terms for a bundle OR for a long-term. That is MO; we cash him out for draft picks, drft well after a super FA and we are go, Thunderbirds! Need to lock some up, and with little stir as possible IMO. But NO motorcycles beyond this point please. He still has more to prove and surgery to rehab.

GO BROWNS! And may Elfis the Elf be with us!

I don't know if K2 wants a new contract or not, but I certainly don't get the way you worded the title? Did they mention that the Browns will lose DA because of this?

Not for nothing Ralphie, but Vers is right, you are kinda jumping the gun on how the Winslow contract may effect DA..

http://www.wtam.com/pages/Browns.html

Here's a brief excerpt... fell free to listen to the entire interview...

Quote:

Savage, D-A talks are A-Ok
Thursday 02-07-2008 10:52am ET
(Cleveland) - Cleveland Browns General Manager Phil Savage says talks with QB Derek Anderson on a multi-year contract are "moving along ok."

In his weekly appearance on the Wills and Snyder show, Thursday morning, Savage said the two sides have discussed contract lengths of 2,3 and 4 years with even some talk on a 6 or 7 year deal.

The two sides hope to reach a deal before free agency begins February 29th. Anderson is one of 6 Browns players on the AFC squad in Sundays Pro Bowl in Hawaii. The 24 year old Anderson threw for 3,787 yards and 29 touchdowns after becoming the teams starter last season .

If the Browns can't reach agreement with Anderson on a multi-year deal, the team could use its highest one year tender on the restricted free agent.

That would require teams to give the Browns 1st and 3rd round picks to sign Anderson, but the Browns would also have the right to match any offer.

Now that was around 11am this morning, so certainly, things may have changed,, but I seriously doubt it...

I'd also add that Adam Schein can make someone breaking a fingernail sound like dropping the bomb on Hiroshima. The man is at full volume when he whispers.

I'll believe this when I see it in print somewhere.

If I remember correcly, if Kellen played at a high level (not sure numbers wise how that works out) he would only lose out on 1 Mill from his contract... Not much to recoup there...

I heard about this too but heard it was K2 & his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, wanting the extension for the "new attitude" that K2 brought the Browns this year..."next question".

I say, "Meh" to this Winslow comment. Players want new contracts all the time.

I more worried about the above quoted comment. Either trade DA or keep him ONE more year. NO extensions! Make him play at the same level from '07 ALL next season (and not have any reduction in Dec). Heck, we didn't even make the playoffs (due to his crappy games IMO).

DO NOT SIGN DA TO AN EXTENSION!!!!

I'd prefer him traded but I'll accept him back as the starter in 08.....but why sign him to an extension now? What has he proved? He can make some decent throws when he's got loads of time. Who can't? Didn't Tom Brady prove in the Super Bowl what can't be done while getting hurried and sacked every play?

Sorry, after the Arizona and Cincy games.....I'm no longer a "Fanderson".

He wants the extension because he knows his career won't last that extension.

Don't like saying it but he's probably going to decline quickly seeing how jacked up he is already. Sad...

This I can't disagree with and frankly wouldn't be surprised to see us draft a "weapon" type tight end with an early pick, possibly even the 2nd rounder if it's the BPA.

I agree with you Mutt. And I don't blame Kellen. He see's the writing on the wall and knows he's only got a few more years at this playing level......and knows there's isn't a big contract waiting after this one. He either makes his money now or nothing. I wouldn't be too mad if they ripped up his contract, shortened the length and raised the value so he can maximise his earning potential. I think he proved his worth by playing through so much pain this past year.

Some of us on the board made it very clear that when Savage forced a renegotiated contract upon Winslow's agents that if Kellen produced at a pro-bowl level, his people would come to the Browns trying to get that money back.

This shouldn't surprise anyone. It certainly doesn't surprise me, as I've been expecting it. Furthermore, I don't expect the Browns to budge until Winslow proves that his various ailments which were CAUSED by that wreck are getting better, not worse.

As far as Anderson goes.......this means nothing. We aren't considering offering Anderson the kind of money that would necesitate a decision between one player or the other.

Yeah Toad,, but dang it all, the Browns were great to this kid.. They could have NOT redone his contract,, The could have said to him,,, Hey, Idiot,, give us back the 2 mill bonus,,, when your ready to play, give us a call... But they didn't treat him that way.. and the new contract he signed only hit him for around a million which he could make back with incentives if memory serves.. so what money does he want back? I think the reporter is making this stuff up..

I thought that given the circumstances, Savage and the Browns organization as a whole, treated him extremely fair. Not that that matters all that much when you have an agent like Rosenhaus..

They did treat him fair, but you're no kid (no offense ) and if I recall your work history, you've done work which made you anything but ignorant as to how the world works.

What's fair about life? What's fair about the NFL? What does fair have to do with ANYTHING in today's world?

Had the Browns gone after Winslow, maybe they could have voided his contract. But where would that have gotten either side? Playing hardball should only be reserved for when you're willing to create contention, and if we'd have gone after him in that regard, we probably lost any chance of retaining him when his contract ends.

Another aspect of all this revolves around the PR issues. We still have to lure in free agents, and what free agent would talk to the Browns if they thought the FO would go after them with all the brunt-force that their legal department could muster, assuming said player made some kind of mistake?

Rule #1 in my world: Life isn't fair.

Everything else falls into place once you accept that. Having accepted that, no, it's not fair that the Winslow's agents would go this route considering everything that happened, but since life isn't fair, we have the right not to budge

I never expected Winslow's agents to do anything but what they are doing now, as that's their job. "Fairness" has nothing to do with any of this. Greed is one of mankinds greatest human failings, and because we are still nothing but smart animals, I don't expect either side to be totally fair. Afterall, If the Browns could offer Winslow a contract for $100k per season and know he'd sign it, you can bet they'd do it

Browns tight end Kellen Winslow told Sirius NFL Radio Thursday that he wants to renegotiate his contract.

"When I got hurt (in 2005) the contract got renegotiated so some things
changed but I think I've proven these past two years that I'm one of the elite
tight ends,'' Winslow said from the Pro Bowl in Hawaii. "My value on the field,
they put in a nickel (coverage), an extra DB in the game, and that really changes the
whole game. They have to guard me kind of like a wide receiver so, you know,
yeah, gotta to get that new money. (laughs)"

He was asked specifically if he'll be looking for a new contract.

"Yeah. Hope so. Hope so,'' he said.

He added that he'll let his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, handle it. Winslow fired
the Poston brothers last off-season and signed with the high-powered Rosenhaus.
Winslow, who caught 82 passes for 1,106 yards and five touchdowns in 2007,
signed a one-year extension in 2005 through 2010. He made $2 million in 2007, and he's set to make $4 million in 2008, $4.9 million in 2009 and $4.75 million in 2010. He also has
performance-based incentives in the current deal.

Winslow's 1,106 yards receiving and 5 TD receptions were career-highs. His
yardage total is the most by a Browns tight end in club history and third
overall in team annals. His 82 receptions and 1,106 yards ranked 3rd among NFL
tight ends.

He's replacing injured Chargers tight end Antonio Gates in the Pro Bowl.

Come on man Winslow has been in lots of pain the past 2 years now and put up awesome stats. They guy has totally changed his attitude around and was a huge part of our recent success. He's always on the sidelines at home games getting the crowd pumped up and he walks on the field hours before anyone else steps out on the field. He's been the total package for us. I'm all for them giving him a new deal, we have plenty of cap space.

I just don't understand why you gotta see him back up the numbers another year to justify a new contract, do you think these past 2 years are just a fluke thing or something? What more do you want out of the guy, maybe if he could part Lake Erie then maybe he would deserve a new deal. Give the guy a break he's been through hell and doing everything in his power to put the past behind him.

I think this is a good thing.

I believe when it was renegotiated, we locked him up until 2010. Add a couple years onto that, and a long as he's healthy, we'd be set. Hopefully nobody i taking this as a bad thing.

And this won't have any effect on wha we do with DA.

He's set to make $4 million in '08... I'm a big KW2 fan, he's been awesome since got healthy after he got stupid on a motorcycle and understand that he and/or agents might try to get a little more.
But $4 mill is enough for one season, and not only that, but
I want to see the Browns in the playoffs and him being a big reason for it, before he starts whining about re-doing his contract.

True !....If we have true Team Players on our squad they should Not be so greedy and place the success of the team(Which will eventually get them paid .) ahead of additional $$ in their wallet....Itwas reported by Tony Rizzo on Fox 8 that Anderson has turned down a 3 yr. $ 17M($ 11M guaranteed) contract offer....I have also read here that Mr. Savage said that talks with Anderson were to paraphrase , going smoothly....IMHO both Winslow & Anderson should be able put the team first....Given our need to sign Lewis and add FA talent , I don't see us reworking K2 contract or giving Anderson anything near what he is supposed to be seeking(Romeo $ 6yrs $ 67.5M(30M guaranteed)....IMHO this Anderson issue should be resolved ASAP for the good of the team....Ideally some team will come to us seeking Anderson's services(a 1st & 3rd would really be helpful given our current Draft situation).....However , each time Anderson IMHO overvalues himself or his agents overvalue him , if you really believe that he leaves contract talks to them....He only hurts his chances to get any decent contract from another team ....

OK guys you make it sound as if I reported this over national radio.

As I understood this with Winslow and his agent,Drew Rosenhous, are threatening to sit out until the Browns significantly sweeten the contract pot.
HE WANTS TO RENEGOTIATE HIS CONTRACT AS MANY STAR ATHLETES DO.

DA and his agent want big bucks from the Browns to resign him past his contract end point next year. If he has another good year we may not have the bucks to throw at Winslow,Edwards, Lewis and all the free agants we wish to sign.

If we trade DA for draft choices we do not have to pony up big bucks and we get to start BQ.

Actually, with the amount of cap space we have, combined with the ever-increasing financial well-being of the NFL, we'll have plenty of money to sign all of the above. It simply comes down to what's fair market value for each guy.

From the sounds of things it was a off the cuff remark on K2's part. I wouldn't read to much into it. Perhaps at the time that K2 was asked to add time onto the back of his contract the Browns made a promise to him that should he do this they would be willing to do that, who the hell knows. At the end of the day I wouldn't make to much out of it.

As for DA, lets all try at least to be fair, these are contract negotiations. The Browns have a number in mind and DA's people have a number in mind, as they should, it doesn't make one side right and the other side wrong. I found it strange though that PS went out of his way to put out a desclaimer on the article that was written about the contract negotiations last week ( 5yrs), seems like a member of the press made up a little lie again.. All need to remember they don't have any better idea then the rest of us do, and lets face it niether side is trying at this point to negotiate DA's contract thru the press, they don't know crap, REMEMBER that please..

You and I have had this discussion before.. there is a difference between being fair and good business sense. redoing the deal with winslow made good business senses.. This time at least, Good business sense and fairness worked in harmony..

Like you, I've been around enough to know that that isn't always the case and I'm firmly in the belief that had redoing Winslows contract NOT been a good business move,, Fairness wouldn't even enter into the picture. he'd be gone or hit very very hard in the wallet.

But Phil and the Browns did indeed take the high road here.. They could have condemed KW for his actions, instead, they basically stood by the kid.. The did NOT have to do that, but they did.

IF and it's a HUGE if, KW's agent is looking for some big bump,, it's probably ill timed to say that least. But I wouldn't put that past Rosenhaus...

He didn't say he was actively seeking a new contract now. "Hope so" after a question as vague as "will you be seeking a new contract" could easily mean "Yeah, I would like to resign a new contract when my current one expires."

The whole segment is so vague it really means nothing.

HONOLULU (AP) -- Kellen Winslow is looking for a new contract.
Usually, the Pro Bowl is all fun games, with the NFL's best players enjoying Hawaii's weather.

But the Browns tight end spoke on his current contract situation.

He also says he's hoping to get a new deal from the Browns. With his agent by his side, Winslow told reporters that he's proven over the last two years that he's one of the league's elite tight ends.

And Winslow says he'll be seeking a second opinion on his right knee, which might require surgery for the fourth time.

http://www.wkyc.com/sports/sports_article.aspx?storyid=82936

Apparently, KW made a statement of some kind about his contract.. Drew Rosenhaus was by his side.

I don't know fellas, but to me, this is poor timing... Bad move, no need to make it public,,, Be a man and walk into Phils office and say what's on your mind.. But playing it in public sounds a lot like another one of Rosenhauss clients...

Winslow, who caught 82 passes for 1,106 yards and five touchdowns in 2007, signed a one-year extension in 2005 through 2010. He made $2 million in 2007, and he's set to make $4 million in 2008, $4.9 million in 2009 and $4.75 million in 2010. He also has performance-based incentives in the current deal.

Not sure what incentives he gets with his current deal, but it's no doubt he's looking for $$$ of the guaranteed variety. His base salary is right in line with Tony Gonzalez's new contract he just signed last year... actually, it's MORE.

I could see a contract lasting through 2012 with not much changing in the base salary range. He'll be shooting for the bonus money. Spread over the length of the contract, I don't think it's going to kill our cap. Gonzalez got $18 million in bonus/guaranteed money.

What everyone is forgetting is that Winslow's new agent, always tries to get a new deal once he signs on to represent a player. Whatever that old deal was, Drew tries to redo the deal. But this time, it will not work because Winslow's knee is not in good shape. So the Browns do not have to negotiate a thing with Winslow, other than when practice will start.
