Random chain of conciousness stream that poured its way through my brain this morning .....

Let's just say that Bill Cower does decide today that he's had enough of coaching, and needs a break from the grind. Let's assume that he does indeed decide to walk away from coaching. Further, let's assume that he doesn't want to get away from the game entirely, but doesn't want to put in the 20 hour days that a Head Coach often does. However, let's assume that he does love the game, and does want to continue to have a part in it. Going even further down this road of assumption, what if Cower decided that he really wants to be the guy who helps set the agenda for a team, and to help a team turn its fortunes around? What if there were a team, perhaps even one that Cower had played for in the past, that really needed a shot of winning attitude, and .... not coincidently ..... also had an opening for a team President?

I wonder if Cower's contract would prohibit him from becoming team President for another team ... like maybe .... the Cleveland Browns?

Randy Lerner, while also playing "footie" owner overseas, is currently performing as President.

How hard can the job be?

I think it's a huge leap of hope. If he leaves he's going to want a break IMO. I don't think he would disrespect the Steelers by jumping to a job inside the division. Not yet, anyway.

This doesn't have a chance in hell of happening.

And who would want it to? LOL.

Not that you care, but I agree 100%

If Cowher IS leaving, I don't see him getting back into the game immediately. If he leaves, he's def. going to take a year or 2 off, without a doubt.

Trick question, mate? Either it is harder than he is working at it given the results (Trump would fire the entire Cleveland City proper and adjunct zip codes, I suspect). Or it is easy enough to be considered aa part time job. I think before he gets too deep into those roundball fondlers across he pond, he better insist on a style of play that is NFL. I do NOT want him coaching, but he needs to insist on certain philosophical imperatives that do NOT include pooch punts, mega draws, pointless blitzless games, BE's mouth (Look Momma a talking BUST) as a requirement for renewal. And it has to occur this week. My feelings only. If RAC, the new OC, and doc saavage can't produce then the hunt is on. Period. Produce or pack time.
Da Browns! Da blues! Wait til next year (again)!

I'm calling out the Beavers to dam up your stream of conciousness...

Ytown, what the heck were you thinking. Cowher is an excellent football coach,,,outstanding is also a word that I would use to describe his skills at handleing his players and coaches.... But as a business man, what part of what you have seen of Cowher would make you think for even one second that he would make a good executive....

The roles are completely different... President of a club deals with Accounting, Finance, Tax, Payroll, marketing, Sales, Data Processing, Human Resources and other adminstrative duties.... What on earth would make you think that Cowher would be interested in that much less qualified to deal with it....

come on man,,,,Share some of what your smoking with your buddies,,,Please

Cal...careful what you wish for....For us Browns fans the "season" is the off season. It is the actual season when things start to get depressing. How soon we forget the 2006, 2005, 2004 and so on seasons. Embrace the off season

[color:"orange"] Maybe the point is to get Cowher into the organization now. Then after next season, if Crennell gets fired we avoid the FA coach bidding war. He is already in the organization and all he has to do is step back down onto the field and take over the head coaching position.

As far as what kind of job he would do as club president, can he do any worse than our current club president?

[color:"orange"]Be cause as coach he always gets his players to play their hardest - ours do not.

His players never disrespect the organization - ours do repeatedly.

The single most important person for creating team chemistry is ... the HC.

So yes it is about the players but yes it is just as much about the coaches. [/color]

Are you kidding me.

Cowher could outcoach Romeo with one hand tied around his balls.

We dont need him.... yeah whatever you say buddy. RAC's track record far exceeds Cowhers.

Lets pretend that Bill Cowher is a head coaching canidate for 2007.(I know if he leaves Pittsburgh,he can't coach till 2008) You guys still think that Romeo Crennel would be the head coach of the Cleveland Browns for the 2007 season?
Bill Cowher would be the Browns what LeBron James is to the Cavs.
He could turn the Browns franchise around and God knows Randolph has the dollars to get Bill here for 5 years.

Are u serious?

The Browns do not play hard every game. And it isn't just the we have a bad record. It's the way they lose. The 2nd Pittsburgh game they didn't even bother to show up let alone play hard. And whatever game it was that we wore those stupid looking numbers on our helmets.

As for disrespecting the organization. Yes Edwards for one. !st being told he couldn't go to the OSU-Mich game, then going anyway. And on top of that he gets back late for practice. Then he is late for meetings. Clearly Braylon has no respect for Romeo or the Browns. Then the is Winslow. Even though he only said what we were all thinking, to go to the media and talk bad about the OC without talking to Romeo behind closed doors 1st. Do you think for one second that any Steeler would even dream of doing that on Cowher's watch?

Yes I do. I think that any team that has a firey talented young player sit through 3 years of 10+ loss seasons, even though he's only played 1 full season now... there is going to be finger pointing. It's happened in Dallas under Parcells, and not all of it has been TO... it would happen to Cowher too if he had 2 more seasons like this one....

Oh, and Impact, there have got to be 10 threads talking about this,,,,

PITTSBURGH - Bill Cowher will retire as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Thursday, citing sources with knowledge of the situation.

The sources said that Cowher has told several people that he will make the announcement Monday after returning from Raleigh, N.C. to Pittsburgh.

Cowher was back in his new North Carolina home on Wednesday, weighing whether to resign as the Pittsburgh Steelers? coach, return for one more season or negotiate a contract extension.

The Steelers are giving Cowher until early next week to make up his mind ? possibly because he likely would have resigned if he had been pressured to make a call this week. Several players who met privately with Cowher said it was obvious he was leaning toward quitting.

The 49-year-old Cowher also met with team chairman Dan Rooney and his son, team president Art Rooney II, before leaving for a postseason vacation in Raleigh, but he did not speak with reporters. Cowher may work this weekend as an analyst for NBC?s wild card playoff coverage.

Cowher, who has led the Steelers to the NFL playoffs 10 times in his 15 seasons as their coach, never seriously considered stepping aside until the Steelers finally won the Super Bowl last season. Before that, he said he was driven to fill ?the void? in his career ? the lack of an NFL title.

Cowher?s agent and the team held preliminary talks last summer about extending his contract, which runs through 2007, but the two sides were never close to an agreement.

Because of Cowher?s popularity with his players and his success, the Steelers are giving him more time to make up his mind than many teams would.

They also are agreeable to Cowher returning this year without a contract extension, if he were to decide he wants to keep coaching for at least one more season, or to discussing a multiple-year extension.

?He knows he?s wanted and we love having him as our coach,? guard Alan Faneca said.

If Cowher leaves, it would probably be to spend more time with his family, which relocated to Raleigh last summer. His youngest daughter, Lindsay, is a high school sophomore who wanted to play basketball in North Carolina this season. Her two older sisters, Meagan and Lauren, currently play at Princeton.

While this was the first season Cowher spent away from his family, he said it was not a distraction ? possibly because the time demands on NFL coaches are so great, they have little free time during a season. He did make brief trips to North Carolina during the team?s bye week and the two weekends after the Steelers played Thursday night games.

Cowher might decide he wants to leave the NFL for a year or two, possibly working as an NFL analyst, until his youngest daughter graduates high school. He could then return to the NFL as a coach, almost certainly with a contract comparable to the league?s highest-paid coaches.

In its recent survey of NFL coaching salaries, Forbes magazine chose Cowher as the league?s biggest bargain ? his $4 million-plus salary is about half that of Seattle coach Mike Holmgren.

However, the Steelers president doesn?t think money is a hang-up with Cowher since last year?s contract talks did not advance far enough for a salary to be negotiated.

If Cowher leaves, the Steelers have two strong in-house candidates to replace him in offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt and assistant head coach Russ Grimm, both of whom will interview with other teams in the next few days. The Steelers also would talk to candidates outside the organization.

Whisenhunt is scheduled to interview Thursday with the Atlanta Falcons and this weekend with the Arizona Cardinals, while Grimm has a Monday interview with the Cardinals. Both have been finalists before for NFL head coaching positions, and Whisenhunt apparently could have had the Oakland job last year if he had wanted it.

Numerous Pittsburgh players said this week they would prefer if one of the two were chosen, rather than a coach from outside the organization who would install a new system.

?Both could be head coaches for some team next year, and I definitely would like it to be here,? Faneca said.

Defensive back Ryan Clark said it?s obvious what kind of coach wouldn?t fit in with the Steelers, who are 34-14 over the last three seasons despite going 8-8 and missing the playoffs this season.

?Tom Coughlin can?t coach us,? Clark said, referring to the Giants coach and noted disciplinarian. ?A guy like that, it?s not going to work.?
