Maybe Savage wanted to keep him? and DA and his agents knew it? Maybe DA wanted to stay BUT had a better long term offer (let´s assume 20mil guaranteed) and said: Give me a little bit more or you´ll get a 1st and 3rd?
I really think the solution to all this....and I know it´s hard to understand for some on here....is: Savage likes DA and his upside and he paid him....it´s that easy folks
Yeah, he turned down a differenct of 6mil guaranteed money to stay in Cleveland. I ain't buying that. Either someone was interested in him enough to up the pay a little AND give up a 1st and 3rd rounder, or they weren't. And if another team out there was willing to part with those picks, we should have taken them and it sounded like Phil was more than ready to accept that kind of a deal.
Do you think Phil will explain the salary offer increase in his next presser? There must be an explanation. I just can't think of it for the life of me.

Man I hope he does cause I am really puzzled by this as well.
I don't want anyone to take my questioning this decision the wrong way,......I am very OK with signing DA and letting him and Quinn battle it out in camp. What I just CAN'T figure out for the life of me is.......the way it played out. it just doensn't make sense that I can see.

One thing about the Pro-bowl thing: Pontbriand was selected as the long snapper by the head coach of the AFC team. Thats how it usually happens since a long snapper would never be voted on by the fans. I think he should get the full credit just my 2 cents
Agreed.
I don't think anyone should be discounted. If you make it...you make it. Regardless of how you get there...When they list off pro-bowl appearances...there's no asterisk to say this player was a replacement. That's part of it. If you get named, you're a pro bowler.
I'm sure David Garrard could've been named over DA, so it's still an honor to be named an alternate, because you're still picked over someone else

Nope, he was chosen by the AFC team's head coach Norv Turner. That position is exclusively picked by the respective head coaches.

I dont think it was a position thing. I think the coaches are allowed a "player of need" they can be any position.

OK, ok....you got me on the Ponti thing. To each his own on how you view the others. As far as the DA signing goes.....when are they going to annouce it as official? You'd think it should be soon.

One point you didn't bring up Kardiac is the possibility that DA might go down. Since we have a good O-Line this is far less likely, but lets remember how many QBs we've had go down for significant time in the past.
Having two starting QBs is a great insurance. We know that if DA goes down, Brady comes in and we keep rollin. If Brady goes down, DA comes in and keeps us goin.
That's a really nice luxury

You're right Kardiac, but with DA returning (assuming he is), this gives us another year to really see how good he is. And, I think DA enters training camp as the starting QB, but he knows that Quinn's right there behind him. Hopefully that will push him to really excel. That's really what people want overall.
But, I think this year will really tell whether he's our long term answer or not. But it sure is nice to have this kind of problem, I guess!

It is...we could be talking about bring in David Carr or trying to sign Joey Harrington or even luring in Trent green to start for us in 2008....

Maybe DA retains the starting job, but he better do a whole lot better in camp than he did last year... Quinn will eat him alive if he doesn't.. JMO however

Yes, last year he did terrible in training camp, missing wideouts galore. He couldn't even beat Charlie Frye out then, man that was pretty bad right there. Hell, even Dorsey looked better than Anderson at times, but we will see, come on Quinn.

Sometimes. I like the "competition builds better players" angle too. But I hope to God Romeo handles a QB competition/controversy better than Davis did if it comes down to it. Nothing more i hate seeing than indecision when it comes to a position. You can't be pulling people and changing them out each week or each game hoping one or the other can provide a "spark." Best thing we can hope for now is for one of the two guys to outplay the other. I see good and bad in this, either way it's a gamble.

I am not sold on Anderson either, but no one is going to tell US what the REAL deal is,...so we just speculate. I think Savage got nervous at the prospect of not having both, thereby having become antsy at the thought of only having Quinn w/no backup, and the only "return" having been the 1/3 draft picks.
Gosh dang if Atlanta hadn't sealed a deal, we got the pick, sitting there at three in the First Round with Gohlston on the board.
I have a strange sense in my gut that there's a trade coming,....

Now that Anderson has signed has anyone heard that IF this situation came to pass that Quinn would request a trade ?....My buddy told me that he had heard this scenario , but I have not and can't find anything on this rumor....In a way it makes sense since the longer Quinn sits and fails to gain experience , the more his trade value drops ....

really??? I just got home from work.... Would Savage really do a sign and trade?
I just don't see it happening. Maybe Atlanta would be willing to give up a 1st but not 1st and 3rd so we're doing the sign and trade... I don't know.
I am pretty bummed about this so far. I feel Quinn is more than capable of being able to play and the 1st and 3rd could have helped us on defense...

Anderson to sign multiyear deal with Browns
NFL.com Wire Reports
Cleveland Browns quarterback Derek Anderson wasn't a free agent for long.
Chris Trotman
Anderson has agreed to a three-year, $26 million contract, including $14.5 million guaranteed, to stay with the Browns, reports the NFL Network's Adam Schefter.

I'm guessing the signing bonus will be around the 5.5 mill area.

If that's an over/under question, which its not but I'll turn it into one , I'll say over. My guess is $6M.

It´s official:
Browns, Anderson agree to terms Jeff Walcoff, Staff Writer 02.29.2008
The Browns have agreed to terms with quarterback Derek Anderson on a three-year contract, the team announced Friday.
Anderson took over the Browns' starting quarterback role halfway through the team's 2007 Week One loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers and led the team to a 10-5 record as a starter, completing 298-of-527 passes for 3,787 yards, 29 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. His touchdown total fell one short of Brian Sipe's record of 30 set in 1980. Anderson only was sacked 14 times during the season and also rushed for 3 scores on 32 attempts.
Anderson joined the Browns on Sept. 21, 2005 via waivers from Baltimore, where he joined the league as a sixth-round draft pick out of Oregon State the same year. He didn't play during the '05 season but appeared in 5 games with 3 starts in '06, throwing 5 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.
Stay tuned to ClevelandBrowns.com throughout the evening for full coverage of the signing.

No doubt.
We inked a player who was a big part of a turn around season.
Now we control the situation.......that can't be viewed as a bad thing.

It was supposed to be on STO, but all of a sudden All Bets are Off was cut out, and there some some weird Cleveland auto show, what gives?
Maybe it'll be on the website in a couple of hours.

It is good.Although the Browns had to increase thier initial offer to get him signed,it's a good deal for both parties. Now,it's may the best man win.
Indecision may,or maynot,be my problem
