Link POSTED 9:07 p.m. EST, February 29, 2008 SAME STATE, DIFFERENT TEAM? On Friday, the Detroit Lions agreed to trade defensive tackle Shaun Rogers to the Cincinnati Bengals. The trade somehow fell through. Now, Rogers could still be coming to Ohio. But as a member of the Browns. Nicholas Cotsonika of the Detroit Free Press, citing an unnamed source, reports that the Lions are working on a deal with Cleveland. Earlier on Friday, the Browns sent a second-round pick to the Packers for defensive tackle Corey Williams. I put it in the Williams thread but figures this deserves it's own. We pwn the bungles!

Shaun Rogers trade to Cincinnati falls through By NICHOLAS J. COTSONIKA FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER February 29, 2008 03:50 AM http://m.freep.com/news.jsp?key=216281&rc=sp Big Baby was the big news Friday as the Lions traded Shaun Rogers to Cincinnati - or maybe not. The Lions had a deal with the Bengals for third- and fifth-round draft picks. They confirmed it. The Bengals didn't, though their official Web site reported it, as did numerous media outlets. But late Friday night, sources said the deal might not go through, and one source said the Lions were working on a deal with Cleveland. The Lions had been listening to trade offers for the immensely talented but often underachieving defensive tackle, and they were working on moving him the first day teams could begin trading and signing free agents. Rogers is due a $1 million roster bonus today. Rogers has three years left on his deal, with base salaries of $4.25 million this year, $5.25 million in 2009 and $7 million in 2010. They had been listening to trade offers for Rogers and completed a deal today when teams were allowed to start trading. Rogers would have been due a $1 million bonus if he were on the Lions roster Saturday. Rogers was a second-round pick in 2001, part of president Matt Millen's first draft class. He is immensely talented and has been outstanding at times. He has gone to two Pro Bowls. But he has not made the expected impact at other times. His health, conditioning and work ethic have been issues. His agent, Kennard McGuire, said Monday that he would welcome a trade. "I truly believe a change of scenery would be the best thing for him because I truly believe he's capable of being one of the best of the best at the position," McGuire said. "I truly believe he's someone that's truly capable of redefining what that position is about, and a change of scenery may be just the right recipe for that to happen."

ROGERS TRADE OFF
The trade between the Lions and the Bengals for defensive tackle Shaun Rogers is apparently off.
According to Mike O'Hara of the Detroit News, the deal was not consummated and the Lions will be looking to send Rogers elsewhere. The two teams had agreed that Rogers would head to the Bengals for a third-round and a fifth-round pick.
In our view, that's not bad news for the Bengals. Maybe it means that someone within the organization raised an alarm about the 2007 allegations against Rogers regarding his conduct in a strip club. Though he wasn't charged, is that really the kind of guy that the team should be signing giving its recent history of struggles with off-field issues?

While this is a nice dream...I'd have to see it to believe it. Everywhere I've been says he's going to the Bengals

Detroit Free Press Article I know he has a history of being a slacker, but he has been on some TERRIBLE Lions teams. It may not be a good motivation, but change the scene and the player may change his habits. Worth a shot.

Well, I'm definitely glad he's not going to Stinksanastti.
But I still don't see him coming to Cleveland.

Bengals | Rogers deal not yet finalized Fri, 29 Feb 2008 18:01:35 -0800 Tom Kowalski, of mlive.com, reports the trade between the Detroit Lions and Cincinnati Bengals sending DL Shaun Rogers to the Bengals in exchange for third- and fifth-round choices in this year's draft has not yet been finalized. Citing a source close to the situation, Kowalski also reports another unidentified team is ready to make an offer for Rogers if the deal with Cincinnati does not get finalized http://www.kffl.com/hotw/nfl#453927

A league source tells Booth Newspapers that the Browns will acquire DT Shaun Rogers from the Lions in exchange for CB Leigh Bodden and a 2008 third-round pick.
Beat writer Tom Kowalski notes that "details are still shaky," but we've confirmed that despite past trades, the Browns do still have their 2008 third-rounder and can trade it. Bodden would be a huge score for Detroit, which is desperate at cornerback. If this deal goes through, they'll be desperate at nose tackle. Source: MLive.com

Might as well pony up the 3rd and 5th. Hello defense. Rogers, Smith and Williams? We could go from having maybe the worst defensive line in the NFL to having one of the best.......overnight. Come on Phil!

I'd say I can read the future, but I already saw something on an unrealiable site on this...didn't think it was true...maybe it is?!
A source tells the Detroit Free Press that the Lions are now working on a deal that would send DL Shaun Rogers to the Browns.
A deal that would've sent Rogers to Cincinnati was called off late Friday. The Browns just picked up Corey Williams for a second-rounder and sent their first-rounder last year to Dallas to move up for Brady Quinn. They're all out of 2008 first-day picks. Maybe they'll move onto the 2009 draft.

Bodden for Rogers? Man, I don't know. Gotta think about it.

Think quick POSTED 9:47 p.m. EST, February 29, 2008 ROGERS TO BROWNS A DONE DEAL According to Hondo Carpenter of SpartanNation.com, who as we understand it is very well plugged in as to the goings on in Motown, the Lions have finalized a trade of defensive tackle Shaun Rogers to the Browns. In return, the Lions reportedly will get cornerback Leigh Bodden and a third-round draft choice. Carpenter says that the league office rejected a trade that would have sent Rogers to the Bengals for a third-round and a fifth-round pick. Link

I´m...well...shocked....wow.....our 3rd AND Bodden.....Bodden with only 4th/5th round value? I mean....we know he wasn´t the same player last season...but stilll...I´m still kinda shocked and really dont know how to feel about this....
I really hope Phil isn´t trying to do too much....I mean, next thing we know Phil trades Edwards for Lito Sheppard and a pick, signs Berrian and Stallworth...then trdaes A.Davis, signs Briggs and LaBoy too

Cornerbacks are a dime a dozen when you can get after the passer. New England didn't even bat an eye when Samuel left and no one seems to even stop and ask why.
I'd hate to see Bodden go but with E. Wright and Brandon McDonald having very good first years (and Holly emerging as a legit NB), we could trade Bodden for DL help.
Rogers has had some problems in Detroit but he's also been incredibly unhappy. A change of scenery could do him some good. Oh and yeah, he can play a little too which doesn't hurt.

I can't find that story at Mlive.com
The only one they have up is one saying that the cincy deal is off and that there is another team interested but they didn't know which one.

Better be sure our two 2nd year guys can handle the job ... I dunno.
One way to look at it is that if were getting pressure on the opposing team, our CB's would look 100x's better than before, therefore covering up some late rookie mistakes these guys could still make.
Plus, i dont like that third rounder business. Fourth or fifth plus bodden and I'd call it.
There are no sacred cows.

This sounds risky but maybe RAC is the type of coach that can get Rogers to live up to his potential
Bodden for as much as he is liked here is injury prone and appeared to lose a step last year. I know I ma not the only one who was wondering what was going on with him last year.
But throwing in our 3rd is crazy....that is Unless

Er... then we'd need a cornerback, right? Unless we're thinking Wright and McDonald are good to go? Or we're going to get an immediate starter in the fourth round with our first pick of the draft? This move is a head scratcher for me.

Randall Gay and Ty Law are both out there. Law is old, but would be a temporary fix.

I wasn't talking to you man. The TC was talking smack about how we own them......the Bengals knocked us out of the playoffs, regardless of final record. I don't mind smack talk but we, as Browns fans, have no place to talk smack on any team. I was just reminding him.

As far as Bodden, he always seemed injured. So I'm not sure it hurts us that much. We'll need to sign some tier 2 FA CB now.

No, but you did.
On the trade, if it is true.
First impressions.............I don't think I like this one too much.
Bodden and a third for a guy who was criticized for being out of shape, taking plays off, not giving his all, and being a disappointment????
He has talent, but damn man. That is a lot to give up. Bodden is a pretty good corner......plus a third. Hopefully, this report is not true.
Either that.........or hopefully I am wrong and Rogers is going to lose weight, get in shape, stay out of the strip clubs, play hard, be a good teammate, and produce up to his vast potential. *L*

I think a lot of people maybe don't realize how good Shaun Rogers is. He's absolutely a legit 2 gap tackle that will command double teams and let our LB's run in space. Not only that but he can attack a gap and collapse the pocket on passing downs. He had 7 sacks last season at DT.
People are concerned about a 3rd round draft pick? Yeah, we sure could use another Charlie Frye or Travis Wilson.
With the play of Holly, McDonald and Wright Bodden was expendable for a big piece and Rogers is just that.

Wow , this is all very interesting indeed..... I know Bodden has not been himself as of late and I THINK it may be worth it. But we better make damn sure Rogers gets fired up and plays his ass off, he better not be slacking on any play. I just need to slow down an think for a minute, everything is just going so fast right now...so we have a 4th, a 6th, and a 7th in the draft am I right???
