Link Browns close to deal for Lions' Rogers Posted by Tony Grossi February 29, 2008 22:04PM Categories: Browns The Browns waited until Friday evening before confirming the trade of a second-round draft pick for Green Bay defensive lineman Corey Williams. By then, they already were engaged in trade talks with the Detroit Lions for another highly rated defensive lineman -- Shaun Rogers. According to a league source, the Browns got involved with Rogers after a proposed trade of him to Cincinnati fell through. The Bengals offered third- and fifth-round picks for Rogers. There was no explanation why the trade collapsed. The Lions were frantically trying to trade Rogers before today to avoid paying the seven-year veteran a $1 million roster bonus. The source said talks with the Browns included their third-round draft pick and a player, possibly cornerback Leigh Bodden. Such a trade would be costly for the Browns because they already are without their top two picks in the April 26 draft. They gave up their No. 1 last year for quarterback Brady Quinn and their second for Williams. "I knew there was going to be some sacrifice involved in trying to obtain a player we wanted, but in my mind, in our estimation, a legitimate veteran defensive lineman who's still got a lot of upside potential seemed to be a good fit for us," said Browns General Manager Phil Savage, who spoke to the media before news of the trade talks for Rogers was known. "It's going to be tough for us to watch all these players come off the board. I would say our scouting staff has spent more time getting ready for this year's draft than any one since I've been here, because we weren't sure what was going to happen. "Now we can narrow our focus and lower our sights and get to know those mid- to lower-rounds players better and maybe find a gem or two." Savage said he was sure the Browns could not draft a worthy college lineman with the 56th overall pick, which they owned in the second round. Williams, 27, was tagged the franchise player by the Packers, which preserved them two No. 1 picks in compensation. They agreed to much lower compensation because they did not want to commit a lot of money to him. They have a surplus of defensive linemen. The Browns agreed to a six-year contract with Williams, Savage confirmed. He would not comment on reports that the deal included between $16 million and $18 million in guaranteed money and more than $36 million overall. Williams will be introduced to the media this morning. Williams, 6-4 and 313 pounds, played tackle in the Packers' 4-3 alignment. He would play defensive end spot in the Browns' 3-4 system, Savage said, and move inside in four-man fronts. "I think he'll be a really valuable addition to us, not only because of his rush ability on the inside but also his ability to play the run," Savage said. "We think he'll give us some legitimacy on the defensive front." Savage also confirmed the team hosted visits Friday by New England receiver Donte Stallworth and Tennessee defensive end/linebacker Travis LaBoy. More players are expected to visit over the weekend, including Baltimore linebacker Nick Greisen. The Browns also are trying to line up a visit with Pittsburgh outside linebacker Clark Haggans. Savage said he hopes to sign more players over the weekend, but wasn't sure it could get done. "I'd love this to be over by Monday so we can get on to our second-day draft picks," he said.
you had a good run Hank.

So I guess it will now be Robaire, S. Smith in first slot at NT and S. Rogers at second? leaving our boy C. Williams on the other end.
Phil is really going all out in this one, if we get all these great players I have no problem with no draft picks. I just hope everything goes as planned and everyone performs at their best during the season.
No it's time to go get a LB or WR, do the magic Phil!

If this deal comes down, I love it. I always felt Bodden was overated. Saun Rogers is a freak athletically. Hopefully the motivation is there to be on a winner for Rogers.

We have a 4th, (2) 6ths and a 7th
According to Phil's presser yesterday we have a 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th. He stated that we owe Philly a 6th for Fraley and Seattle owes us a 6th for Frye.

I'm out for now. Feeling interested/worried what I will actually see tomorrow, given what Bengals fans must be feeling right now after all those reports. When I see these guys proudly holding up their brown jerseys I feel secure

We are going to have to watch ourselves. A lot of big contracts recently and w/K2 and Edwards wanting new deals.......where will be in two years? All I know is this.........
.....we better save dough for Joe.

he's one of our best draft picks EVER. up there with Jim Brown when it comes to impact. good thing thomas has a 6 year contract
We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

You better believe it. And those grunts helped us win a lot of games last year. I also love defensive linemen. I'm glad Savage is really trying hard to fix the d-line. I might not agree w/the Rogers move, but the dude is trying hard to fix a weakness and perhaps he has a backup plan for cornerback. All I know for sure is that he recognizes our weakness on the d-line, and he is trying to fix it. Btw...........isn't anyone else interested in Haggans? The guy can get after the QB and he would help at OLB.

Haggins might be our best option at OLB right now with Pace coming off the market. I'd sure like to see him in Cleveland rather than with the Steelers, that's for sure.

Dude, I was a RB who got a college scholarship at a pretty good school because of this big hosses up front. Then I had another group in college who made me look good. I know the importance of the "big uglies."

Maybe they have "pittsburgh fear" since every OLB to leave Pittsburgh ends up being a waste (see: Jason Farrior, Joey Porter).

Yeah, that's true.
But, I think Haggans fills a role for us. We desperately need another outside pass rusher to play opposite of Wimbley. Haggans fits that role. He's got a bit of a nasty streak and he will bring an attitude along w/a speed rush and some physicality to our defense.
He won't be a dominant player, but if used right, he could be an integral part of our pass rush package.

Just doing some rather rough math where does this leave us?
Somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 million to spend
Anderson: 6-7 million Rogers: 5-6 million Williams: 6-7 million
We'll err on the side of caution and go high. Let's assume we have 19-20 million of that available space tied up now......seems as though we could squeeze one more impact signing in there, maybe in the 5-6 mil per range if we wanted to (given that our rookie pool will be next to nothing with no picks in the first 3 rounds).
I would guess at this point though that we'll rescrtuure a few deals (K2, BE, etc) and fill out the roster with rookies/smaller contracts.

Nah ... why would we want a really good pass rushing LB experienced in the 3-4?
I think that if we could come up with a Haggans and a FS we could see our defense really make a big jump.
I am wondering how Bodden was viewed internally. Mel Tucker was Secondary coach last season, and just moved up to coordinator. If anyone should know Bodden, it's him. While I doubt that he had the final word on this trade ..... I bet he had some imput.

IF this is true, I kind of like the idea. Bodden has been injured most of the last 2 years, and did not look good last year. We would go from having about THE WORST defensive line to one of the BEST in 1 day. I would think that IF this is true that Savage has something else on the burner for a cornerback. Does New England ring a bell? I think there are a couple out there that could help us immediately. Or, maybe Baxter is showing something, possibly as a backup. I would take Rogers for a 3rd round pick ANY TIME, and I think Bodden may not have been in the plans for this next year. Just my opinion though

Interesting point about Tucker. Bummed me out though. I always liked Bodden. Hell, I remember when I went to TC when he was a rook and I wrote a report on the camp on the old board and I was raving about this kid........and none of us knew who the hell he was. Oh well..........
YTown..........if we got Haggans and a legit FS this off-season........I might start petitioning Savage for the HOF. *L*
We would have kept or acquired a:
---stud RB
---QB w/tons of potential
---two strong defensive linemen
---OLB that we desperately need
---and a FS to replace the worst player on our D.
No way it happens, but one can dream.

If we do get Rodgers we should have one heck of a rotation for our defense front...R. & S. Smith, Williams, Rodgers....holy crap that may just fix our defensive line problem.
As for corners it seems our front office always finds gems in the late rounds...Holly, Mcdonad, Bodden..so I trust their decision making when it comes to CBs..
I really hope we sign Briggs
Go Browns!!

the Associated Press is reporting it as a done deal. associated press y LARRY LAGE – 10 minutes ago DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Lions traded Shaun Rogers to the Cleveland Browns instead of dealing the defensive tackle to the Cincinnati Bengals, a person familiar with the moves told the Associated Press. The person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity Friday night because the Lions and Browns were not commenting on the trade, said Detroit acquired cornerback Leigh Bodden and a third-round pick from Cleveland after the deal with Cincinnati fell through. Detroit previously was set to get Cincinnati's third- and fifth-round picks, a deal still posted on the Bengals' team Web site late Friday night.

If we get Rogers it pretty much does for the DL what happened with the OL last year...pretty exciting.
I wouldn't mind getting Haggans, tons of experience in the 3-4.
I watched the 2nd Steelers game and the 49ers game the other day, and keyed in on Pool for a while. He has no instincts at all, I could have gotten to the play as fast as he did. I wonder how much he had to do with Jones not having the season he had in 06.
Who would you think of as suitable FS to pursue?

2/3 of that is done ..... and I would expect that Savage is working on at least 1 LB.
I haven't figured out the whole Pool infatuation. The guy seems to have zero instincts for the position, and seems to get lost in the zones. I actually think that he played better as a CB when he had to fill in a couple of years back.
I think that this might be the biggest remaining hole on defense. (and it's more like an abyss)

What a crazy day. Man. I don't mind giving up the picks for Williams and Rogers, although Draft Day will be a bore. lol... Two proven players instead of hoping we pick the right guys in the Draft? No probs. Like many I worry about Rogers's motor, but I think we have the leaders in place - both on the field and the sidelines who will keep him hungry.

I think he's absolutely right and I think that quote explains Savage's thinking. Had we drafted Dline, I think we would have had a situation where the Offense was a race horse ready to go and win the race right now except the jockey was holding back the reins because the defense needed time to grow and learn their positions.
There are times when it's better to draft your talent and there are times when it's better to get them via FA. In my opinion, this time, the FA route was the way to go.. we can have the defense and the offense ready to make a run deep into the playoffs because we have a balanced team rather than a good offense and a dismal defense. I don't think it works when one side of the ball is trying to catch up to the other side.

Sad to lose Bodden, he was one of my favorite players, but with Wright and McDonald and Bodden's health issues the past two years, it makes sense. Love what Phil is doing with the D-line. Another pass rusher and a beast ILB and we should be fairly solid on D. Stick another WR and a future RB in there and we're looking really good for the next couple years.

I don't like the Rogers for Bodden and a 3rd deal. Maybe Rogers for Bodden....or Rogers for a 3rd....but a 3rd AND Bodden? Did someone not take the keys to the FO's front door from Dwight Clark and Pete Garcia when they got canned?
This is a Bad Move IMO. We are going to line up with Holly and Wright at Corner? Holly is a good Nickel....but starting? No. Now, Rogers for Holly and a 3rd still sounds bad...I don't want to give up a Corner though. Remember last off season? The Corner-less hysteria? Thats what we are going into again.
Rogers is lazy. Gerrard "Big Money" Warren version 2.0. I want nothing to do with him. I wanted him to go to cincy. When a team starts to sink just a little, Rogers is one of those guys that helps to push the boat down. I'd take a chance on Rogers for 4th...And thats about it.

Hey ddubia................what do you think about this?
Not a bad start, eh?
Like they say at McDonald's, "I'm lovin it!"
Savage, like RAC, has been the same guy since he's been here. He has a plan, he tells us and the whole world what that plan is, then he goes out and accomplishes that plan.
It makes me wonder why previous regimes, and so many other teams, were/are so secretive about what they felt were team needs and what they might do in the off-season to improve.
Savage doesn't seem to mind at all filling us in on all that. He probably feels the rest of the NFL already knows our weaknesses as well as we do so it's no big secret anyway.

A guy that athletically gifted and that "football smart" can work in a 3-4...nuts to anyone who says he can't!
I'd also like to take a look at Clark Haggans. He's older, but he can still lay the wood. Another OLB to ILB possiblity?

Comparing Shaun Rogers to Big Penny is laughable
Rogers has been to 2 pro bowls and has been WAY more consistant than Warren. Warren...I don't even know if he is in the NFL.
Look, if Rogers is motivated, he is the best, THE BEST, DT/NT in the NFL.

Wilson is someone to keep an eye on. He's not great, but would be an upgrade over Pool. The dude from the Giants is pretty good, but he will be overpriced because they won the Super Bowl. He is a strong run defender and physical. He is way more active than Pool, but his range is limited.
The cat from the Bengals is interesting. Hard to fathom taking a defender from the Bengals, but he is an upgrade over Pool.
Best bet...........sign a Wilson for a year and draft another FS next year. I wish we had Russell back. We don't need a great one, but we need one who has some instincts.
And you are dead on..........Pool's weaknesses hurt Jones this year. We played a ton of two deep and Jones is better when he can play closer to the LOS and cover the flat and stuff the run.
I think Pool compromised the entire D. He needs to go, but I wonder if we give up on him this soon. He was a high draft choice from a rather weak draft class.
Btw........did anyone else catch this? I read somewhere on here where it was the league that nullified the Bengal/Lion trade. Can that be true? If so, did they stop the trade because of Rogers' character problems and all the problems Bengal players have had recently?
