They'd probably be right. Yet despite that pure physical ability, it's what's between the ears that has always held him back in college, in the draft, and in the pro's. He made big leaps with that ability this past season, but it's those same old issues that kept him from being snapped up for a 1st and a 3rd, and why the Browns still have a long-term competition at the QB position.
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***

I'd have to disagree with your assertion.
I see more inaccurate throws then bad decision making.

The decision-making got better over the season. The accuracy did not. You can coach him up, break down film, and teach him when to make better decisions. I'm not sure you can do the same for his accuracy, or lack thereof. Actually, for me, it's a lack of touch on those short patterns moe than anything else. We wonder why his production dropped off late in the season. I think it has to do with teams taking away the deep pass and forcing him to throw underneath, which he has trouble doing. He learned how to check-down better because he was forced to. But he didn't quite put the touch on his throws that he needed to complete a lot of those passes. And he would sometimes check down too much!! We would be facing 3rd and 8 and he would throw it to K2 running a 5 yard out pattern. (Kinda makes you wonder why anyone is even running a 5 yard out with that down and distance but then again, you can't send everybody deep. Someone has to be underneath and it's usually the guy who goes uncovered, which is why DA was so tempted to make those throws. Therein lies the need for better decision-making.) Anyway, is it any wonder why he had one the best coversion rates of any QB on 3rd and 10 or more? He can make those throws. He struggles with the quick hits. I hope he can improve there but again, I'm not sure that is something that can be coached.

His decision making "got better"? I beg to differ. Did you actually watch the last half of the season?
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

It certainly did. He was checking down and taking what the defense gave him.
His one problem? He couldn't hit those shorter passes. He was making better decisions but the accuracy never got any better.

I guess when decision making "gets better" your losses and interceptions go up? Just because you "look around more" doesn't mean the decisions you make after "looking around" are any better. When you're throwing into double and triple coverage, throw four int's in one game, your decision making is NOT "getting better". Quit drinking the kool aid.

Pit, it's very, very simple why his INT's went up.
Because he couldn't hit the short stuff, we were often in situations where he was forced to throw deep, and the D was already sitting back.
I'm not drinking the Kool-Aid, I think BQ will be better. But if DA's accuracy increases he'll be perhaps an elite QB.

Losses? C'mon Pit. Through the first 7 games that DA started, he was 5-2 and through the last 8 games, he was 5-3. One more loss makes him a poor decision maker? No, my only question about his decision making ability was when he threw short of the first down marker, as I alluded to earlier. But that can be explained because those routes had the only open receiver and so he would hit it. Teams watched film and began to take away everything else. All of which explains why his ability to check down got better. But he still had trouble with accuracy and touch. He threw into double and triple coverage all season. And more often than not, he would complete a beautiful pass that only a few other QBs in the league could make. So it's like RAC always says: "If it works, it's a good play. If it doesn't work, then maybe it's not such a good play." I think DA would, at times, get overconfident in his ability to sling the football into a window the size of a softball and that's when we would see the INTs rack up. Vers has even said that he was coached to do this at Oregon State, which explains a lot. Since I read that, I have changed a lot about how I assess DAs late-season performance.
Ammo, you actually did a really good job of explaining it, so I won't beat a dead horse. But people are gonna see what they want to. It's funny though because all 3 of us are Quinn-guys to various degrees, yet we can't all agree on the limitations of DAs game. Regardless, I hope he overcomes those short-comings this off-season and has a stellar season. If not, our boy takes the reigns.

In an effort to understand you better, I ask that you expound on your thoughts for once Cruzer. I, for one, do not think that DA has too many limitations to be successful, but I wonder whether or not he can overcome his limitations to become the QB we need him to be. And if not, what limitations doed Quinn have and can HE be the QB we need him to be? With DA, we know a lot but need more time to see if he can grow. With Quinn, every question has yet to be answered.

That's precisely it.
How many seasons do people think we'll go through basicly "injury free" at the RB AND OL positions?
What will happen when these injuries occur and DA has to "depend on his legs, throw on the move"??? Disaster.
It is what it is. A very limited QB who can only flourish in "perfect conditions". And I use the term "flourish" very lightly. That will vary from week to week even IN "perfect conditions".
Sometimes reality bites.

I think the limitations you speak of could apply to Marino and Kosar, and yet they flourish at QB.
Not saying DA is either one of them, but all three seem to be pocket passers for the most part.

DA dose have one too many limitations to become qb, who can lead us to championship. You are absolutely right we need to see what BQ offers. But I don’t think there will be fair competition to judge who is better qb, Especially after DA signing such a big contract. DA will go into this season as lead horse and he will get most of the reps as a starter. BQ won’t have chance to make significant difference in training camp due to the situation this season.
In your opinion you do not think that DA has too many limitations As per me here are DA’s limitations: 1. Accuracy on short as well as on long passes, especially bad on short ones. On long passes we have seen receiver make adjustment to catch ball 2. He locks on to his primary receiver and will force the throw between multiple coverage. 3. He dose not see the whole field and therefore so many times he has missed open receiver 4. Makes poor decisions 5. No mobility, can not throw on run

Accuracy, though hard to coach up, can be refined with practice and getting familiar with his receivers. (Something he didn't have a chance to do in TC last year.)
2. He locks on to his primary receiver and will force the throw between multiple coverage. Coachable.
3. He dose not see the whole field and therefore so many times he has missed open receiver. Coachable. 4. Makes poor decisions. Pretty vague but Coachable. 5. No mobility, can not throw on run. Unfortunately, not coachable. (Although, he did scamper for 33 yards against the Chiefs in '06 and helped us to get in position to kick the game-winning field goal.)
See, it's not that I don't think DA has limitations, but rather that most of his limitations can be overcome by practice and camping out in the film room. Personally, I think DA can do better with a full off-season as the starter under his belt. But I still have concerns about his performance during road games. I know he has been picked apart numerous times since the season ended, but no one seems to put a lot of focus on his knack for winning at home and losing on the road. If we figure out how to win on the road, we're good.

DA deserves credit wherever its due, but I think you are giving him too much credit for 7-0 home record and 10-6 season record.
We won those games because of team effort 1. DA making few good throws 2. OL giving qb good enough protection 3. Receivers making spectacular catches 4. Defense making stops, when it needed most 5. Special team giving good field positions

I don't know that I'm giving him too much credit anywhere. I think he made some good plays that contributed to our 10-6 record and conversly, made some bad plays that contributed to our 10-6 record. I just find it odd that 7 of our 10 wins occurred at home and 5 of our 6 losses occurred on the road.

What do people expect our QB's to say... Nope I really don't like to play..I like riding the pine and drinking kool aid If Quinn said anything other than he wants to start I would be disappointed.. Hopefully I can make it up to camp and watch these two battle it out

Not to minimize your reasons because they are good ones... but here is another reason he might have gone 7-0 at home..
Cincinnati 7-9 Baltimore 5-11 Miami 1-15 Seattle 10-6 Houston 8-8 Buffalo 7-9 San Francisco 5-11
That's one team with a winning record... one.

and that 1 team with a winning record got to play SF, Az and StL 6 times during the year (they went 5-1).
people here talk about how our record may have been inflated at 10-6 because we played the AFC East and NFC West, but Seattle's was just as bad, if not worse thanks to playing the NFC South (and being in the West). The only team they beat of any consequence was TB and its not like they were a juggernaut.
Teams they beat: SF(2x), StL(2x), Az, Cincy, Bal, Chi, Philly, TB Teams they lost: Atlanta, Az, Car, Cle, NO, Pitt

Yeah our schedule was nice last season, we should have beat the Cards and Bengals. Not to mutilate the horse any more but the one and only reason we didn't make the playoffs was because we turned the ball over late in the year. Thats how bad teams beat good teams. It killed us.
DA has always been inconsistent as a QB...thats why a QB that has a rocket arm a prototypical size gets drafted on the second day.
He's never going to be a 60% completion passer, he always gonna have INT problems as well. He takes chances with the ball, he's innaccurate. Bad Combo. Plus does he have the brains to play QB in the NFL as a starter? Yeah he won a few games against bad teams with no tapes out on him in a new offense.
What we saw the second half last year was a result of teams adjusting to Chud's system. Let's use the Bengals as an example:
Game one: Lot's of cover 1, 2 deep coverages mixed with lots of blitzing.
The Bengals and the rest of the league realized that rather than challenge our OL and give one on one matchups why not force us to march slowly down the field.
Game Two: Mostly cover 3, base zones, little blitzing. Forced DA to anticipate coverages and/or check down and throw short passes. It also forced DA to be patitent and not throw down field. We all know what happened.
I think Brady does have more between the ears than Derek, but it's all just talk and potential. All I know is DA is gonna have to play ALOT better next year with a tougher schedule and plenty of tape floating around on him.
I don't see him being much better than last year. IMHO

Yeah thats my point, the REASON Derek wasn't taken on the first day was because he was inconsistent at OSU.
He has the physical tools of a top 10 pick but was a 5th round pick because of mental ability.

I still cant figure out the love fest for our backup QB at all times here.
We had a QB throw 29 TDs and we give him no credit because we have great receivers and a good OL, but when we have a bad OL and no receivers its still the QB's fault because he cant win with marginal talent.
The thing is, is regardless of opponent or schedule or whatever, we won 10 games. He went to the Pro Bowl. He threw 29 TDs. Thats good no matter what.
Did we sign this guy to kill us in the future? Noooooo. We gave him a modest 3 year contract, that says look, you did things for us we havent seen in years, so youve earned a much deeper and more lucrative look. And thats completely earned.
Much like recently and above stated he has flaws, but other than mobility, theyre ALL coachable.
He improved in decision making as the season went on. All season. Yea he had letdowns, but he improved.
He was forced to throw underneath more often, and he did better with that (although marginally)
He can be coached to do the things he did wrong better. Accuracy can easily improve with work and practice and coaching. So can footwork, so can everything he struggles with.
No one mentions that he gets the ball out quicker than any QB we've had. Derek couldve done fine with a decent OL because he gets the ball out quick. Why doesnt anyone mention that anymore?
He moves very well in the pocket. You think the only reason he took like 10 sacks is because our OL is invincible?! fat chance. He avoids the rush very well. Why dont we credit him for that?
He makes decisions! Does anyone in GB lament over Brett's interceptions? no. They accept that he will make enough good decisions to overcome bad ones. Theres no reason to think that DA cant make good decisions to overcome his bad ones. Which will continue to get fewer and fewer, and if they dont, he can leave.
I really cant figure out why we can have a QB win 10 games, and make us an explosive offense for the first time in years.
Now we have 3 Wideouts that can make a defense crazy, PLUS the best pass catching TE in the league. We have a huge big play WR in Braylon, a YAC guy in Stallworth, and a zone buster in JoeJ, along with Hands McCatch-Everything in KW2. And we'd rather give it to a guy whose thrown 8 passes? just because he's BRADY QUINN!
Until Derek shows me he doesnt deserve to start, I see no reason to bash him. He's played well, and until he plays bad for a stretch, I'm unwilling to think we should go elsewhere with our QB.
About Quinn still wanting to start...GOOD. Thats the mentality every player in the league should have, and if they dont, they should go play Tennis, or Curling.

In a perfect world yes, but in reality no its not because you can throw 100 TD's but if you throw 50 INT's and lose the important games its not a good year.

Not to be mean, but your dead wrong. It's painfully obvious that DA did not IMRPOVE in any way.

Again, thats a common board myth, you can't coach accuracy.
Quote:

Because when he played in 2006 he was destoryed by the Bucs, getting the ball out quick can only occur if there is somebody to throw too. And no DA did not get rid of the ball quick at all last year. He held it alot.

OK you can evaluate a player and point out problems, thats not bashing. IF its the truth its not bashing.
I dont know if BQ is the answer but CLEARLY DA has some major kinks to fix if the Browns will take the next step.
With our weapons we SHOULD be ok w/ DA. IMO

How did he not improve? because he had a bad game at Cincy? Theres being too much stock put into that. Again if you look at the stats there, he threw twice as many times as Carson, and pretty much doubled his stats.
He made improvements. At the beginning of the year he was throwing the ball into bad coverages a ton of times. Yea he still did it at the end, but definitely fewer times.
He learned to throw the ball away as the season went on when there wasnt anyone open. Thats improvement. He ran more often when no one was open. Or took sacks instead of making terrible throws.
And holding the ball alot?! Compare him to 6 sacks a half #9. He held the ball because no one was open. Teams stopped blitzing and dropped people into coverage. Evidenced by the improvement in numbers for JL. So the threat of our QB for the first time in years forced teams back, opening holes for our RB.
Accuracy cant be improved? So...If i pick up a football and start throwing it and i throw wildly, im going to be inaccurate the rest of my life? That sounds crazy. Accuracy is coachable. If you throw a certain way, and cant get it on target, you adjust your mechanics. Thatll improve accuracy.
OK, he got bashed by TB and Cincy in two separate games and threw 8 ints. I guess thats it for him.
Look at Eli, he threw 4 ints, 3 for TDs against the Vikes. But, he still won a SB. To say that we cant go anywhere with DA is like saying Eli Manning wont take the Giants anywhere. That sounds ridiculous.
We'll be fine with DA

I wouldn't consider this a "controversy". Sure there's a lot of debate between the fans about who should start, but in reality, we have as clear a starter right now as just about any other NFL team.

Not that it really matters, but he was a 6th round pick.. And there isn't a damn thing wrong with the way that DA thinks.. He has the mental ability, he has the physical ability. What he's lacking is experience..
I'll just leave it at that otherwise, we'll all be headed for a Deadbate,,, frankly, I'm really burned out on the subject!

Good point, there isn't a question about who is the 2008 QB. Clearly its Derek's job. The expectations are going to be through the roof.
I'm not saying DA can't be the guy, im just saying he's not proven anything yet and most would agree has some big issues in his game. Everyone is entiltled to their opinion. Boards wouldn't be much fun if we all agreed and liked each other!
I don't care who the QB is, just get to the playoffs! Quinn can sit forever if DA gets us to the postseason.

Hey i'm happy to agree to disagree!
I'm not saying he's dumb, he just doesnt read the field very well and makes poor decisions. When QB's make bad decisions sometimes it's due to exprience. He just seemed to continue his college career of being inconsistent and making poor decsions.
I hope your right and DA will get better.
It just didn't look good to me when he got worse with more playing time last year.

Maybe i'm stupid, but why cant we use Brady when DA falters like he did at the end of the season last year? Or in the middle, or anytime? With 2 talents like this, why not use them both?

Can you point out anything that Derek is good at?
Your posts read as if you want him gone because we can do a lot better, but offer no solution or vision.
We were 10-6 (10-5 under DA)...there are a lot of QBs that can't say that, and of those who can none of them can say they had a 30th ranked defense.
Honestly, I don't care if he does a backflip and runs 10 yards in away from the endzone after each snap. Just don't get sacked, get the ball into the hands of our playmakers, dont get anyone injured, and most importantly bring home a win (by any means necessary).
Winning is the only thing...you can't improve on 19-0 no matter how you got there.

Stallworth gives Browns options Steve King, Staff Writer 03.05.2008 Sometimes, what you don't see is exactly what you get.
That seems to be the case with the Browns' newest wide receiver, former New England Patriot Donte Stallworth.
When the speedy Stallworth was signed in free agency last Saturday, the reaction was predictable. The Browns had acquired another deep-ball threat to go along with Pro Bowler Braylon Edwards. They are perfectly suited to play in an offense with a big-arm quarterback such as Derek Anderson.
The Browns like to stretch the field. Now with Anderson throwing to these two, they can stretch it into the end zone.
But it also strengthens the depth at the wide receiever position. So simply from that standpoint, the signing of Stallworth was worth it to the Browns.
But there's more -- much more -- to it than that.
Stallworth also brings two other things, the first of which, according to Browns general manager Savage, is the addition of a quick underneath receiver, something else the Browns didn't have last season.
"I think last year we had Braylon, we had (tight end) Kellen (Winslow), we had Joe Jurevicius and we had (wide receiver) Tim Carter," Savage said. "I think the discussion at the end of the year was we felt like if we could upgrade the Tim Carter spot in particular, that it would help the entire group.
"Joe had come up at the end of the year and said he felt like being the No. 2 receiver had taken somewhat of a toll on him as the season developed, so he would appreciate if we could go find a legitimate number two.
"I think this really clearly defines what each of them will be doing. Donte' brings big speed, but he also has the underneath quickness that we didn't have last year. I think he'll make our whole group of skill players that much better."
Indeed.
"It's just something that I feel like I can bring to the team, whatever the coaches feel like they need me to do," Stallworth said of running the shorter routes during a conference call with the Cleveland media the other day. "It's something I didn't do last year in New England, but I did do in Philadelphia a couple of years ago and in my first few years in New Orleans.
"I'm used to running the intermediate routes and I'm excited to be doing whatever it is that I can help contribute to winning."
Football isn't only about throwing the ball 45 yards downfield on every play. Cover 2 defenses have seen to that, and with Anderson's penchant for going deep successfully, the Browns saw plenty of that scheme in 2007, especially in the latter half of the year.
How do you beat a Cover 2? By making defenses respect the underneath routes.
And how you get that respect from defenses? By having receivers who can dart to the open areas and catch the ball.
Those underneath routes are much more about quickness than speed, and Stallworth has the unique ability to be both quick and fast. When he comes off the line of scrimmage, teams will be wary of his speed in running past them in a 50-yard burst, but they also have to be mindful that he run past them in 15- to 18-yard bursts.
They may not be glitzy, but those shorter routes add up.
The Browns know all about that. So does Stallworth.
In what he said may have been his second-best game last season -- a 34-17 win over the Browns on Oct. 7 at Gillette Stadium -- he caught four passes for 65 yards, an average of 16.3 yards per catch. Included in that was a 34-yarder for a touchdown late in the first quarter that helped the Patriots build their lead to 10-0.
What Stallworth also brings to the Browns is the experience he had last season with the Patriots. A team can never have enough "winning" players, for their attitude permeates the locker room and seeps out on the field on game days.
When asked about that in the conference call, he eventually turned the focus of the conversation to his new team, the Browns, and said, "They experienced a little bit of success last year. They're hungry, and they want more."
And whether it's by running long routes, short routes or something in between, or if it's in bringing the persona of a championship-caliber team like the Patriots, Donte Stallworth will try to help the Browns satisfy their hunger and get more.

Don't insult yourself :-)
IMO...you shouldn't have started Brady second half of last season because: 1) We were still in playoff hunt 2) The elements were bad (30 MPH winds and 8" of snow in several games) 3) We only lost 2 games all year by more than one score and we had a 30th ranked D (so the O must have been doing something right) 4) Quinn doesn't have timings down with the starters 5) Anderson was a Probowl QB

I missed the 8" of snow in several games.
But you've got a good point. No sense letting the rook get his feet wet in high winds and bad weather. It would've proved nothing.

Ummm... he wasn't a probowl QB until after the season when Brady decided he didn't want to go... just FYI
