I havenot followed him much, I do know that the guy can be a beast....Every bit as good as Casey Hampton when he wants to be.

What I'm worried about is if he's WILLING to play like Casey Hampton. Hampton has been known to just take out three blockers so that the linebackers can do the rest. Very selfless player.

I'm worried that we picked up a 4-3 penetrator who will abandon his duties at nose. That's what worries me especially along the lines of paying him this much.

People need to remember that this probably saves us money over the course of the first three years.

The deal pays $23 million over the first three years as opposed to $17.5 million. However, most of that is going to be in a signing bonus that can be spread over the first five years. Let's say, 12 million of the 23 million is in a signing bonus, he is paid that now, but the cap hit will only be $18.6 million over the first three years.

Also, this allows us to set up his deal to properly suit our cap needs. For instance, we have a lot of extra room on the cap for this year. So we could orient the deal as such:

Signing Bonus: $10 million
2008: $6 million
2009: $3 million
2010: $2 million
2011: $5 million
2012: $7 million
2013: $10 million

That makes his cap hit only $5 million and $4 million respectively in 2009 and 2010, we can cut him after 2011 without much of a hit to our cap, and thus the end years don't matter so much, and we get a pro-bowl caliber player for cheap in our contention years.

Lyuokdea,
Good post and people forget, we had 3 downline men that could not start anywhere else in our division, now we have two that could start, and be productive. Between rogers and some decent backups, Defense will not look like a track meet!

It cannot be horrible yet. It's only a bad move if he doesn't work out for us.
If he consistently plays the way he can, it's not a bad deal at all.

I may have had a few Gin & Tonics this afternoon...But man u totally lost me with that...

1) We know nothing of the contract right now...
2) As of right now the 2010 season is UNCAPPED...
3) I can't get those figures to equal what u say...

And I'm one who's STUDIED CAP 101 for years...

Just thought of something..I could be wrong but since we have no picks on the first day or a third rounder..that rookie pool money is being spent on these guys....or can they do that?

YES they can...

Your draft pick Rookie Pool is the Max that any team can have as CAP HITS for all drafted players...

It comes off your total AVAILABLE Cap Space...

It doesn't matter if u sign your #1 to a 100M contract...As long as the TOTAL CAP HIT of ALL picks does not exceed your alloted Rookie Pool...

U r correct...

This might have been the only way we were going to get Rogers. We had to agree to writing up a new deal.

Why do you think Detroit would make that part of the trade agreement? Then, why do you think Phil would let another team tell us we have to redo a current deal? Rogers had no leverage in the deal. He could threaten to hold out, but then he wouldn't get paid.

Rogers could have said, "re-do my deal or I won't show in Cleveland." While it's easy to say that Rogers wouldn't get paid.....we'd also look like fools trading for someone that doesn't want to play for us. A lot of people cracked Cincy for failing on two DT trades. We'd be in the same book if Rogers held out after we lost a draft pick.

And, I only said it's possible explanation.

Also, Phil could have wanted to control the details of the contract from our end. Maybe Detroit had some clauses that made us uncomfortable.

"No, signing talented players does that, and you do have to spend for them."

Yes,just look at the Skins and Yankees, well maybe the Pats,no no the RedSox, yeah that's it.

That's alot of money for any D-tackle,especially one with Roger's rep for laziness.
Pay it now,or pay it later I guess.

For some reason people seem to think that this is going to increase his cap cost ... and that's probably not that case at all.

From a quick glance, it looks like they took the 3 years he had remaining on his Detroit contract and modified that to varying types of guaranteed money, including, most likely, a signing bonus. His original deal called for roughly $20 million .... and now his guaranteed money is $20 million ... only not all of that guaranteed money will necessarily come due against the cap in the 1st 3 years.

And that's entirely possible ...... but depending on how those dollars allocate against the salary cap, his cap cost could be significantly lower than it would have been under his original deal.

That was the first thing to go through my mind. It was a bit fishy with how things got submarined with Cinci. I've read two articles that stated that it was in fact Rogers (his agent I'm sure) who managed to get the deal nixed by not allowing the $1M roster bonus to roll over to the next year though they had in essence agreed to that verbally. I'm not one for conspiracy theory but I suspect Savage wedged himself in there with a little promise of a new contract if Rogers agreed to tank the good faith deal with the Bengles. This deal, I'd be willing to bet, is the fruit of that bargain.

It's a much deeper gamble now. This is going to munch cap for years to come whether he's good Rogers or bad Rogers. But if he's only between better than average and pretty darn good with any consistency it'll mean a lot to this defense.

Lucky sevens, lucky sevens, come on lucky sevens!!!

i guess that makes some sense, just because he is making more in the first three years of this deal then his old contract, does not mean that is the hit against the cap- probably spread out over the 6 years.

But my question is, why did this have to be done now??? Why not next year??? The guy might have motivational problems, well, wouldn't motivation 101 say to dangle the carrot of a new contract after NEXT year based on performance THIS year. I don't know, that what i would have done anyways. Seems like the browns lost alot of leverage in motivating this guy, and i hope that the change in scenery and a winning team is enough to get this guy going.

What's the difference.. now, next year? You have a chance to lock up a kid that, by all appearances, the Browns have great hopes for. What would be the value in waiting?

Cleveland Browns defensive line reaches $100 million

I read somewhere that Rogers can tend to get lazy. Sometimes money can do that to ya. ala Gerard Warren.

He better know what he's doing, because that's a HUGE amount of jack to give to a 29-year old defensive tackle with questionable work ethic.

I would never pick a fight with my favorite Texas frog, but I'd like to mention this one thing that bugs me about all the negative press Shawn Rogers gets about questionable work ethic, weight issues and the like.

It's that he was voted to the Probowl in '05 and '06. He was also an alternate in '07. Thats' not stuff he did 6 years ago. That's his most recent 3 years.

So, what are the issues that have followed him for these past few years? Obviously he has played at a very high level while taking plays off, weighing too much and having so many negative questions surrounding him.

I just don't get it.

Not saying some of that stuff is not true. But perhaps he has displayed a bad attitude while on a bad team in Detroit. Once you get labeled with a bad attitude every other negative seems to fall at your feet rather easily.

Look at the things being tossed around about BE when he was acting less than professional. K2 as well. I know Rogers is no youngster like those two. But as I said, if your bad attitude shows, folks are usually not bending over backwards to defend you. More likely they are straining their necks to see if there's anything else they can tag you with.

Overweight: He has consistantly been one of the most disruptive defensive linemen in the NFL going to the last three probowls. Too fat to play well? Dude has 11 blocked kicks! Do fat guys who's weight hampers their movement accomplish that?

Work ethic: Doesn't put in the effort. But he has consistantly been one of the most dominating defensive linemen in recent years. Takes a lot of plays off? And still makes probowls? Is said to have the ability to "take over games" by himself. Perhaps he didn't take over enough games for the likes of the fans and media there.

Detroit fans and media have come to call him "Big Baby". For what reasons exactly? Was he complaining about losing? Arguing with his coaches? Whinning to the media?

I'm not really asking anyone to answer these rather difficult questions. Perhaps I'm asking others to ask the same questions.

What I am getting at is how can the player be so lazy, fat, irresponsible and carry so much baggage, while at the same time being a probowl caliber player?

Is it possible that in the losing culture of Detroit it became too easy to "pick on" players who everyone thinks should be able to pull the team out of it's misery? Is anyone else in Detroit getting the same "treatment", like say, their overachieving QB who throws for a million yards while getting sacked more than any other QB in the league?

When I hear of Roger's negatives it reminds me of Gerard Warren. But the main difference between Shawn Rogers and Gerard Warren is that "Big Money" has done nothing in the NFL to speak of. Whereas Rogers has made a name for himself as one of the most talented, disruptive, domineering defensive linemen.

There is no comparision. But with eyes closed it would sound like folks are talking about the same player.

It just doesn't add up for me.

Lastly, I'm wondering if there are a lot of stipulations and conditions to met by Rogers, weaved within that contract, that he must adhere to in order to make that big money.

One thing I'm pretty sure of, Savage and McCracken (?) have shown on sign of screwing this kind of stuff up.

Those were my thoughts as well.....PS definately feels we're poised to win it all,he and RAC have been there before and obviously feel it's time to strike while the iron is hot.

For those of you who remember Phil's analogy of The Browns to the delapidated house at the end of his street: That house is really starting to look beautiful.

Make no mistake about it Dubs...There are 31 teams in the NFL that salivate over having this dude on their fronts...Remember...Rogers was NOT a Free Agent...If he was there was a Bidding War going on...Bank THAT...The 32nd team NOT interested was guess who...lol...And WHO runs this certain football team???...Yep...The infamous one...

I'll say it right now...Regardless of the press he gets...I've seen this dude many many times...And I KEY on this guy since he was the ONLY thing Detroit has had defensively for YEARS...He is the QUICKEST most POWERFUL Defensive Tackle I have EVER witnessed in this league...He's beyond Saap in his best years...

He is a ONE MAN SHOW...Dominant...

The reports of him playing END are CRAZY...Rogers will be the NOSE we need here...He'll go outside at times in the rotation and situation...But he is NOSE ALL OVER...

We could not have DRAWN UP a better scenario of upgrading this Defensive Front 3 than we got with Williams and Rogers...Smith & Smith from last year add to the puzzle...

This guy is an intelligent individual...Caught up in Millen's World...NO LONGER...

I didn't know much about him before a few days ago.. frankly, I still don't know much. but Ddub,, you make lots of sense...

How does a guy go to 2 Probowls and be an alternate for another (recent history, not 5 years ago) and be as bad as we've been lead to beleive? How does that happen? Good question.

Guys, you make some good points.

Did you consider the other side of the fence? Why would Detroit be willing to trade him, in fact, they were trying very hard to trade him, if he was so good?

And you can save the "Millin is an idiot" comment. That might work on some people, but not me.

Furthermore, the best they could do was Bodden and a third round pick?

I know that Rogers will be a huge upgrade, but I'm not sold that he is worth that kind of money. Sounds like a gamble to me. Hope it pays off.

I gotta back up what Ddub and D in D are saying. I don't watch a lot of Lions football because I got the dish to watch my Brownies. But I do know that the current regime, ala Millen, will place blame anywhere they can when the team falls flat every year. The current target will be John Kitna, now that Martz is gone. Although there is certainly some truth to it, Rogers reputation as "Big Baby" might not be as bad as it has been made out to be.

Here's an interesting article about Rogers from the week before the trade.
http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2008802270388

Lions must ride it out with Rogers

You should be scared, very scared. Matt Millen is contemplating another big trade and might dump another big name, and this smells like another big mistake.

Once again, the Lions are operating from a position of weakness, a prime position for getting ripped off. It might make fans feel better if the Lions just get rid of Shaun Rogers, their sometimes-best defensive player. It might make Millen and Rod Marinelli feel tougher.

But the question nobody ever seems to ask is: Does it make the Lions better?

Nope. No way. If the Lions get as little as a third-round pick for Rogers, as some reports suggest, no way would I do that. No way should Millen do that.

I don't care how fat and moody Rogers can be. He's a two-time Pro Bowler who will only be 29 next season and unless you get a decent bounty -- a first- or early second-round pick or a legitimate starter -- you don't trade him. You give him a weight limit, tell him you expect him to be a dominant defensive tackle and ride it out.
Take the risk

If Rogers again plays well for half a season, then disappears (he wasn't the only Lion to fade horribly, by the way), it's a risk worth taking. Come on, it's less of a risk than giving Millen another middlin' draft pick, isn't it?

It's also up to Marinelli and his staff to do their jobs, to push Rogers to do his. And if he doesn't stay in shape, shame on Big Baby. If he doesn't, you bench or fine him or otherwise punish him, and even then I don't see how the Lions are way worse for having given it another shot.

Remember last offseason? Remember the glee with which many welcomed cornerback Dre Bly's banishment to Denver? Hmm. How'd that work out?

I remember the refrain well. Bly was divisive and had to be moved and everyone knew it. So in return, all the Lions got were Tatum Bell and George Foster, both eventually benched. And the Lions' biggest weakness, their ultimate undoing after the 6-2 start, was their lack of competent cornerbacks. Shocker.

The Lions were so desperate to get rid of Bly, their leverage was nil and their options were limited. When that happens, you get fleeced. In the end, they excised a cancerous element and left a gaping surgical hole.

That's what they'd be doing if they dealt Rogers. Didn't we just watch the Giants win the Super Bowl with a dominant defensive line? Shouldn't that make Rogers a valuable commodity, no matter how inconsistent he can be?
Anywhere but here

I recognize the Lions' losing atmosphere is so toxic, it makes players want to leave. It turned Damien Woody from a Super Bowl champion into an overweight bust with the Lions -- until his contract neared expiration and he played well at tackle.

If the Lions only kept players who absolutely wanted to be here, they'd be keeping a batch of losers. The first inclination of any good player is to bolt a bad situation. Sorry, but the Lions can't keep granting that wish, unless they want to make Millen's 31-81 record eventually look like the golden years.
Throwing it all away

The Lions' squandering of scarce assets has to stop. Too many of their moves aren't part of a master plan but are desperate measures the Lions back themselves into.

They didn't want to trade Bly, but felt they had to.

They didn't want to draft Calvin Johnson at No. 2, but felt they had to.

They don't want to deal Roy Williams, but feel they might have to before he becomes a free agent.

They surely didn't want to make Cory Redding the league's highest-paid defensive tackle, but felt they had to.

They honestly couldn't have wanted to overpay their own free-agents, including Jeff Backus and Kalimba Edwards, but felt they had to.

They probably didn't want to give Mike Martz so much control, letting his offense dictate everything, but felt they had to.

The Lions are in a tough spot with Rogers. They've been fair with him and they deserve better. They really do. But they put themselves in this spot by coddling the wayward star, by not upgrading other areas, and they got burned when his lack of conditioning killed his effectiveness and weakened his market value.

People throw around the change-of-scenery theory, that moving Rogers would be good for both sides. Not true. It might be good for Rogers, and sure, it'd be easier for the Lions to be rid of the issue. But taking the easy path doesn't make a team better -- ever.

If Millen can't get a significant player or a high pick for Rogers, he can't make the move. You keep dealing from a position of weakness, it's pretty obvious what happens -- you only get weaker.

That's a pretty good article and I can how people would use it to bash Detroit. However, I really didn't see much that was positive about Rogers in that article. In fact, it painted a pretty sorry picture of him, especially if you read between the lines.

Sorry, I tried to read in b/w the line and saw nothing.

Ha-Ha.

But, I might as well add this:

The Lions are in a tough spot with Rogers. They've been fair with him and they deserve better. They really do. But they put themselves in this spot by coddling the wayward star, by not upgrading other areas, and they got burned when his lack of conditioning killed his effectiveness and weakened his market value.

and

It might be good for Rogers, and sure, it'd be easier for the Lions to be rid of the issue.

and

I don't care how fat and moody Rogers can be.

and

If Rogers again plays well for half a season, then disappears (he wasn't the only Lion to fade horribly, by the way),

Not exactly ringing endorsements of Rogers. Like I said before, I hope the gamble pays off.

First off, let me be clear, I think a big new deal for Rogers is a gamble as well. No doubt he will be an upgrade. Will he be worth the money is the question.

The article does skewer Rogers some. But I've read The Detroit News and Wojo's articles for eight years now, and have a pretty good feel for how he represents things.

There is no doubt that Rogers has a firmly entrenched reputation here as being lazy, unmotivated, and immature. That isn't just made up stuff to make it easier to trade him. He has some issues. I just question if they are really as bad or as ingrained as they have been made out to be by the Lions FO.

Also, he is clearly very talented. Talent can't be coached up. Laziness or lack of motivation can.

Finally, I think the article does a pretty good job of showing the ineptitude and crisis management of the Lions FO. I don't think the ineptitude of Matt Millen can be understated anymore. It outlines a pattern of dumping talented players to support their own faulty decisions. The pattern is clearly there: Harrington, Bly, Martz, Roger. Get rid of these guys, because they are holding back the team. Next year, it will be Kitna, then Marinelli and Coletto, then finally, Millen. The pattern of scape-goating personnel and coaches for failure is there, if you read between the lines!

I don't disagree w/that at all. In fact, I think I mentioned that it was a pretty good article. But truthfully, I don't care much about the Lion's problems.

Lazy guys are hard to "coach up." And I was known as a supreme motivator. Guys who already have a desire to work hard, train hard, and play hard are the ones you can "coach up." You can get them to reach new heights. Lazy guys tend to be lazy no matter what. They lack pride and a few other character traits that I better not mention.

It's best to cut ties w/lazy guys. They can have a real negative impact on your marginal players.

I'm not saying that Rogers is in that category, but he does worry me and that article didn't make me feel any better about his work ethic.

I am convinced we are taking a gamble on the guy. Like I said.........I hope it pays off. *L*

Funny, but i think i see what Vers is saying. Basically the guy is saying Detroit should make him be a man and grow up. They give him props for being a sometimes dominant force on the field, but his attitude towards football as a whole seems to be along the lines of a passing interest only good for the cash. So basically, he has the talent, but his hardwork is lacking.

It's definately going to be interesting to see how it developes. Savage is going to look like some sort of GM-savant-guru, or is going to have 23 million worth of egg on his face.
