OSU fans plan to feast on gator -- the other white
meat

Associated Press

Some Ohio stores are stocking up on alligator meat in
anticipation of demand from Ohio State fans planning
pregame feasts for Monday's championship between the
top-ranked Buckeyes and the No. 2 Florida Gators.

Akron's West Point Market is selling alligator meat
for $14.99 a pound. Columbus-area Meijer stores are
selling frozen alligator fillets for $6.99 a pound,
telling customers in an advertisement to "bring home
your own slice of gator." The advertisement for the
Meijer promotion includes a drawing of a snarling
buckeye nut with the tail of an alligator sticking out
of its mouth.

Meijer stores also are promoting "tailgator" parties
on Saturday.

Doug Fulton, West Point's manager of meat, seafood and
oven-ready food -- and a University of Florida
graduate -- said he has been cooking and serving gator
for years. Fulton, a professional chef for 17 years,
is quick to note that alligator does not taste like
chicken.

"It's more of a chicken texture, but I tell people it
tastes like alligator," he said.

I see a trip to West Point Market in my immediate future.

Gator does taste good. I've had it before. I've been wondering where to get some around here....should have thought of West Point! They have all that weird, unusual stuff that you usually don't find at ACME.

Yeah, it's expensive, but the nearest Meijer's to me is in Mansfield...but long of a drive to save a few bucks. I'll only be purchasing 1/2 pound and trying to see if I can trick the hubby into eating it (he's such a fussy eater).

I use to work at good ole' ACME on W.Market St in high school at Firestone......but speaking of West Point Market they are HIGH as hell(meaning prices).BTW, its $15.00 a pound at WPM.

I know that ACME fairly well. Used to shop there when I worked on W. Market during my lunch hour.

WPM is VERY high. just love the odd, imported things you can purchase there. They also have a great wine and cheese selection.

Is that a fact? Both the article and I mentioned 14.99. Ya'll gonna correct me for a penny huh?...

Gator tail is served down here in Tampa in many sports bars as an appetiser........with many different types of options for sauces!

It does taste a little like chicken with a twist of fish taste as well.

I do not order gator very often...........mostly chicken wings for me, but I have plans to order a lot of gator tail on Monday with some good Buckeye friends as we are surronded by Gator fans in a smokey sports bar!

We will have lots of Gator tail on the table with cold beer...........with so many Gator fans in the bar...........it will be so much fun!

I have a feeling that by half time we will own the bar............and that will be a bar that is always owned by Gator fans!

The DVD that Jay is speaking of is the "official" BCS / ABC version. I'm almost sure that I've seen a BitTorrent of a home capture? I'll have to check. I've got all the games from this year in DVD file format. A fine Buckeye that goes by the tag of "timBUCK2" at BuckeyePlanet.com has provided his TiVo capture as DVD files for every football game for the past two seasons. I'm thinking that he may have done this back in 2002, but I could be mistaken. Like I said, I'll have to check.

Buckeyes gladly gobble up gator meat
Ohio State is known for its traditions. During Michigan Week, Buckeye fans plunge into the icy cold waters of Mirror Lake, and for the upcoming championship game, a great deal of fans will be chowing down on alligator meat. In anticipation of tonight's big game, The Lantern wanted to provide recipes for fans to enjoy during tonight's festivities. You can be a part of this tradition by visiting Columbus-area Meijer stores which is selling frozen alligator fillets for $6.99 a pound.

Spicy Gator Tacos
1 pound gator meat
3 tablespoons cumin
2 tablespoons red pepper
1 can of diced jalepeño tomatoes (drained)
1/4 cup fresh cilantro
1/3 cup hot sauce
1 cup fresh lettuce (chopped)
2 cups shredded cheese (any taco & nacho blend is great)
12 taco shells (hard or soft)
1 can of jalepenos
fresh sour cream
fresh salsa

In a skillet cook alligator meat, jalepeños and cilantro thoroughly. Drain completely. Add cumin, red pepper and hot sauce. Line tacos with meat. Top with tomatoes, lettuce, cheese, sour cream and salsa. Serves 4-6

-Gerrick Lewis

Gators & Tators
2 pounds alligator meat
1/2 cup of Italian dressing
1 cup Italian breadcrumbs
Vegetable oil
1 bag of seasoned french fries

Slice meat into finger-size strips. Soak alligator meat in Italian dressing. Prepare fries according to directions and heat vegetable oil. Drop strips into bag of Italian breadcrumbs. Shake until coated. Fry meat until golden brown. Serve with french fries and a variety of dipping sauces such as ranch dressing, ketchup, honey mustard and barbecue sauce.

-Gerrick Lewis

Gator Stew
2 quarts water or stock
3 pounds alligator meat, cubed
1 bay leaf
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce or hot pepper sauce
1 tablespoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
3 cups skinned, quartered ripe tomatoes or 1 large can tomatoes
1 cup rice or diced potatoes
1 or 2 green bell peppers, diced
1 large diced onion
1 cup diced carrots
1 cup diced okra
1/2 cup diced celery

Put water or stock, meat, bay leaf, Worcestershire or hot pepper sauce, salt and pepper into a large pot. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer for 1 1/2 hours. Add remaining ingredients, and simmer for about 1 hour.

-Recipe courtesy of AAA cooking

Buckeye Gator Balls
2 pounds gator meat
pinch of salt and pepper
1 egg
2 tablespoons ketchup
1/4 cup parmesan cheese
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 cans of tomato sauce

Pound gator meat vigorously until beaten into submission (which shouldn't take long). Add a pinch of salt and pepper, one egg, 2 tablespoons of ketchup, 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese and 1/2 cup chopped onion. Then stir. Form mixture into small balls and broil, turning over after 4 minutes and broiling the other side for an additional 4 minutes. Then place in a pot of tomato sauce and simmer. Gator balls can be used to create spaghetti and gator balls or gator ball submarine sandwiches for enjoyment during the game. Take a bite whenever the Buckeyes take a bite out of the Gators.

I searched high and low this weekend at Heinens, Giant Eagle, World Market, and even a local butcher shop, could'nt find any in the Cleveland area. Might make a last ditch effort and head to the West Side Market on the way home from work tonight.

Saint posted an article last week (this weekend maybe), that said that Meijer's in Columbus and West Point Market in Akron are where to buy gator meat this week. I don't know that that means you can't find it anywhere else, but those are the places that are known to have it.
