Can this team, of all teams, afford to let principles get in the way of progress?

Lack of principals put them here, and yielding to the problem is the opposite of "progress."

Setting that aside, are the draft picks going to help the team win right now? Will they contribute as much as Johnson would? Most likely not.

The 'Gals could cave, but at least for now, it's refreshing to see an organization stand up and do what's best, even if those moves aren't sexy on the surface.

Lewis: Johnson should keep word and sit out

CINCINNATI (AP) - Tired of Chad Johnson's posturing for a trade, Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis says the disgruntled receiver should keep his word and sit out the season.

Lewis also said Tuesday that linebacker David Pollack is leaning toward retirement. The former first-round draft pick broke a bone in his neck while making a tackle during the 2006 season.

Pollack's decision isn't a surprise. He has said all along that he doubted he would return if there was a chance he could injure the neck again.

Lewis' comments about Johnson were his strongest yet. The Pro Bowl receiver has been disgruntled since the middle of last season, when his look-at-me antics came under criticism.

Since the end of last season, Johnson has been lobbying for a trade even though he agreed to a long-term deal with the Bengals two years ago. Johnson's contract would pay him $3 million next season and extends through 2010, with a club option for 2011.

Although Johnson stopped talking to reporters in Cincinnati last season, he has done numerous national interviews in which he threatened to sit out the season if he's not traded. Lewis responded Tuesday by saying he should follow through with his threat.

"I've stated our case with Chad," Lewis said. "He has a contract through 2011. He's stated without an opportunity to go to a different team and a new contract, he wasn't going to play. I think he's a man of his word and says he's not going to play, so don't play."

Lewis said the Bengals haven't received a trade offer for Johnson. The club repeatedly has said it won't trade him.

We already know what Johnson thinks Carson should do about his business.

Man, this is going to be fun! And I'm not saying this because it's Cincy. I would be saying this same thing if it were any other team not the named Browns. Good front page news I suppose.

I really like Lewis trying to call Johnson's bluff on sitting out the season. He's daring him! Awesome!

I still think they'll kiss and make up in a few months.

Just a thought here. Doesn't a player have to be with the team for at least 6 games of the season for the "year" to come off of the contract? So if he sat out the whole season, his contract would not be one less year then it is right now.

I agree, Clay. If the Bengals don't get a great trade offer around draft day, Johnson will apologize, the Bengals will have gotten their point across, and things will go back to "normal"...at least until next offseason.

The best thing for them to do is cut their ties now..get the draft picks and plug in willing players..they aren't winning anything this year..and with uncertainty now ..get some compensation..

Exactly Attack, probably the best call for them to get something in return instead of getting a guy who complains about being on the team whether playing or not.

I think Chad will have a lot of coverage whether he sees the field or not this year and it will be a distraction.

But, I have no problem with the Bengals not pulling the trigger on that one. Let Chad sit, lose the chance to get those picks

Good for Marvin.

I've been a big critic of him, but standing up and firm is earning himself and the organization respect.

Ten games.

However, the way Johnson's contract is structured, he won't earn a year closer to free agency. It'll actually extend his contract one year, so he really won't be gaining anything.

Actually, that reads kinda of confusing. Basically, it's as though he has incentives in his contract that reduce it by a year. If he doesn't produce, his contract is one year longer. So basically, he's screwed.

Cowboys | J. Jones denies inquiries about C. Johnson
Tue, 22 Apr 2008 12:33:15 -0700

Albert Breer, of The Dallas Morning News, reports Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he did not make a call to the Cincinnati Bengals to inquire about WR Chad Johnson. Jones did say that he called another team to inquire about a star wide receiver.

My guess is Carolina. They have Steve Smith and not much other then Peppers on defense. Both guys I'd love to have on Cleveland.

I have a quandry with this...Whatever that means...lol...

Johnson's a dooch...Is making it clear as day he doesn't want to be in Cincy...This dude is just making an ASS out of himself weekly...

Lewis is the HC of this team and he's gonna tell u to SIT???...WTF does that do to team morale...

If I was Palmer...I'd be drawin' something up to get the hell out as quick as I possibly can...

This organization's a bonafide JOKE and Johnson's adding to it...So is Lewis...U don't just come out in a PRESS CONFERENCE and say "If u don't like it...SIT the season out"...

Stupid Stupid Stupid...A #1 pick THIS YEAR and another that would end up being a #1 in 2009???...U take that and laugh all the way to the bank...And take the damn HIT THIS YEAR FOR IT...

I think he did the right thing.

He's finally showing that he actually has some authority over the players. He can'[t just keep giving into everyone's demands. I think that would hurt the team more than anything.

I have new found respect for Lewis... What good is a contract for big money if they don't pay you because you don't show up? The answer: Worthless!

I'd be willing to bet that a large percentage of the locker-room are standing up and applauding (in private, of course, hehe). As for Palmer, if I were him, I'd be gaining confidence in the organization, not losing it, specifically because they are finally starting to run the prison (metaphorically speaking, of course ((or am I?))).

Now here's the question that everyone has to ask themselves about the draft picks. IF the offer was really for a 1st and a 3rd (assuming it becomes a first is just that because we've no idea what the qualifiers were) are the Bengals going to get the same amount of return from those two picks as what they would get from Johnson? I think it unlikely, especially since the hit ratio for WR's in the 1st round are so iffy. If the 1st rounders are a 50/50 boom-to-bust ratio for the team that drafts them, and a 3rd round is around 25%, are those picks REALLY all that valuable? Johnson is one of the best receivers in the game. It's impossible to say that the 'Gals would stand a solid chance of getting his level of production out of those two picks. Nobody can know.

I'm beginning to understand that people view draft picks in terms of a value, but hardly ever consider the odds of that draft pick actually failing. To use an old cliche, a bird in the hand........

I think, for once, the 'Gals are doing the right thing. Sticking it to a royal A-hole is going to improve the locker room moral, not hurt it.

Exactly what has Lewis done over the last 5 years that indicates he's "Giving In"???

He's got a receiver that doesn't give a **** about his team...Is making it a public mockery...Has an AWESOME offer on the table in 2 FIRST ROUNDERS...And make no mistake about it...That 3rd will turn into a 1st...

The RIGHT thing to do is dump this bonehead and keep the locker room together...Cause I'll tell ya' this right now...If they keep Johnson and he continues what's gotten him in the position he's currently in...Palmer's gonna start speakin' himself...NOW you're dealin' with a TOP THREE QB IN THIS LEAGUE...Right behind Brady and Manning...

NOT GOOD...Dump his ass and take the hit NOW...Move on...

Lewis was considered one of these defensive geniuses coming from Baltimore...Where's this defense in Cincy after 5 years???

TRADE the schmuck and take the picks...

Also, a lot of times with these loud mouths, they quiet down pretty quickly when someone stands up to them.

Now, he may be completely different and continue being a pain in the butt, but the ball is in his court now. The team has stood its ground, so now we'll see just how tough CJ is.

It's not so much what he's done as it is a question of what he hasn't done.

Compare he and Crennel. As soon as players get too attention-craved, Crennel would curb it, whereas Lewis would let it run amuck since the team was doing okay. When the team sucked, he had to lie in the bed that he made.

Now I think he's finally being authoritative as a head coach should instead of ceding to the demands and expectations of his players.

So mae a statement to the team, and anyone that joins it, that if you don't like your contract, act like an idiot with the media and we'll give you what you want? Hardly a good precedent to set. Lewis is telling his team that the TEAM comes first, not some child throwing a tantrum to get his way.

Exactly. And chad is a me me me guy. My guess is he'll pout for a while, then pretty soon he'll see what the score really is, claim they had a closed door meeting, and now he's happy to be in Cincy.

Excellent point - if the Bengals give in, they've done even more damage to themselves.....Carson will see this, T.J., and before you know it, they'll have even second teamers throwing fits in order to get their way.

Does anyone here give in to their kids when they scream and holler? If you do, trust me, all you did was keep your kid quiet for today, while teaching him or her that tomorrow all they need to do is scream and holler and they'll get their way again.

Chad is childlike in this way............look at the way he treats football: "It's all about me". Chad is a kid that needs his ass spanked and to be told to shut his mouth or else.

Now you're delving into a different animal...

IF this is about CONTRACT and contract ONLY...Screw Johnson...I agree there...

Has his agent come out publicly to request/demand a new contract???...I seriously do not know...

If this is a receiver not happy with how things are run...Screw him...Take the trade...THAT'S the needed statement...

IMO, it doesn't matter if it's about the trade, how the team is run, or what kind of fabric softener they use on the uniforms. If you cave to someone acting like this, you set a precedent that all you have to do to get out is throw a tantrum and you get your way.

We somewhat disagree here...

I say if u don't like how this organization is run...Hit the road jack...

It's better than listening to and having to deal with a mouth like that...How long does it last???...How much effect does it have on the rest of the team???...On what they're trying to do???

And when Johnson's dealt with...Who's next???...Anyone???...Raise your hand now...Cause YOU'RE NEXT...Silence???...I thought so...

If there is truly an offer for a 1st and a 3rd with a possibility for that 3rd to upgrade to a first you take the trade without batting an eye. It's a no-brainer.

In high school or college sports, if someone wants to be a cancer, then ok, sit on the bench.

In pro sports, on one hand, I do like the "we won't let him run our business" aspect of it by daring Chad to sit, but on the other hand...when you're offered two first rounders, when it gives you a chance to improve your overall team, it's hard to say no. Especially at a "fringe" position like receiver (I use that term VERY loosely, I know he's an impact player but I believe in building from the inside out).

It looks like the Bengals are trying to turn over a new leaf, so to speak. They're putting their foot down and not putting up with the crap that they have the last several years.

At the same time, they're losing out on 2 first round picks, which could greatly help their team.

Whatever the outcome, it's win-win for us.

I hope they keep Johnson.

Worst possible scenario for us is they trade him for the picks. Between this year and next, they could completely reload in the places where they are the weakest and be right back on the national radar. As long as they have Palmer, they won't be too far away.

I think they are nuts for turning down such a sweet deal for a 30 year old WR.

Right now, they are doing what's in the best interest of the Browns, IMO. I'm happy with that. If I were a Bengal fan, I'd be pissed.

A friend of mine in Columbus texted me saying he's been giving their fans hell down there. Apparently, they aren't too happy. I suppose I could go over to their board and see what they have to say, but then my IQ would probably drop a few points.

I go over to that board from time to time. I'm always amazed by the number of users signed on/viewing. It's normally ten times what we have here, if not more.

Yet I think there may be 2 or 3 posters that actually seem intelligent. It's actually worse than the official Browns Chat by a long shot.

But it's entertaining.

I go there once in a great while. I've seen some really stupid things said. Things that people who know about football wouldn't say. They aren't the brightest group of NFL fans. I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Look who owns the team.
