Yeah, Russell's was probably an abscess, could been related to a simple cut players get daily on the football field.

I've never known anyone personally, in my 41 years on this planet, who got a staph infection. I get a little scrape on my knee, I don't "treat" it with anything, I let the damn thing heal.
I think maybe we are over-sanitized...too much soap, too much oil and lotion. Just a un-educated guess.
I rarely use deodorant, and don't smell bad. Refuse to buy into all the TV commercials about deodorants, body wash and other crap. I don't even use soap in the shower: I shampoo my hair, let it flow over me when I rinse and that's it.
Good old steaming hot water & a bit of elbow grease with a facecloth when necessary, cleans you better than anything.

Can't say that I agree with you, but whatever floats your boat.
Antibacterial soap is unneccessary. I don't buy it at all. But washing your hands with soap and water is essential.
I see staph infections all the time, so because you don't see it, doesn't mean they're not out there. Oils, lotions, etc are unneccessary. Agreed. But soap is.

I'm telling you as a professional......you need to wash your hands with soap and water, but you can believe what you want.
Soap acts like an emulsifier. It carries away the dirt and germs that plain water can't.
You do wash your hands with soap and water after using the restroom I hope?

Of course I wash after using the bathroom, I wasn't raised by wolves.  Usually just use hot water, scrubbing hard. All I can say is it works for me. I've been lucky with a pretty good immune system, too (runs on my mom's side of the family). Rarely do I get a cold or flu, never had the mumps, measles or chicken pox. You're a professional, so would know more than I do, but I ain't the one falling onto a hospital gurney with a staph infection.

OK, I have no problem believing that staph infections are more common nowadays. You always hear about bacteria becoming more resiliant to treatments.
What I don't get is why we don't hear about players on other NFL teams getting staph infections with the same regularity. Or the Indians and Cavs. Is it this prevalent only with the Browns?

We don't hear about it because as a general rule we don't read newspapers from Florida or California or Kansas City etc. If we see it on the espn scroll and it isn't a Browns player, then we might not even give it a second thought, but since we all read a lot of Browns news and their names stand out to us on espn newscasts or ticker scrolls, then we have more knowledge of it.

HBO special on staph becoming prevalent in sports
Rams staph
Redskins/Blue Jays/high school staph
Redskins
And on and on and on......
Each time it happens to a Cleveland Brown, we have a thread just like this one with people posting that they don't understand it and it's the Cleveland Clinic's fault and blah blah blah.......
It's not unique to us........
And in the prison I work at we probably have 18 cases per month on average.

I figured that was part of it, that's why I tossed in the Indians and Cavs. Not that being a Browns fan makes you a follower of those teams, I was thinking geographics.

J/C. The threads on this subject always bring out a lot of ignorance and this one is no exception. Several people have made some decent points. I've gone on long rants every time this comes up and people want to act like something is terribly wrong with Cleveland Clinic. I'm not going to do it again because it obviously does no good around here.  I'll just say that this is a huge problem all over the world, it is not isolated to Cleveland and there are many reasons for it.

Also, we have to remember that these guys are in absolute tip-top shape. Their muscles require a lot of blood, so that blood is really moving around their bodies. So, when they get any kind of infection, it is going to spread just that much faster through their bodies and settle at the point of least resistance, which would, in my non-medical expertise, be where you just had surgery or have an open wound.

Actually, the staph get into the body through the open wound and that's generally right where it stays unless it goes systemic.

JMHO
Another reason your theory is incorrect(as Shep so eloquently pointed out) is that athletes who are in tip top shape have a slower base heart rate than a person not in good shape(such as me) so therefore the infection would not spread faster because of a increaed blood flow rate.
