A new blow-by-blow on this is a radio report stating that Jim Harbaugh would be a good candidate, and thereby become a Schembechler of sorts,...(desert his home team to take over at the rival school.)

JH is 26 of his last 27 at little known U of San Diego, a 1-AA school waiting to hear if they made the field of 16.

There's two guys who i would consider as replacements....one is Mel Tucker but that's simply based on the amazing job he's done with the defensive backfield situation this year, and the other is my man Pepper Johnson who was viewed as a possible candidate when RAC first came over.

Rumour has it the only college job Harbaugh is interested in is the UM. Ocassionally there is rumbling that he may jump to the pro-level. He is on the radio here once or twice a week and hs done an excellent job with a [color:"yellow"] non-scholarship[/color] 1-AA program.

They have a pretty special QB by the name of Josh Johnson. Harbaugh insists that he is the best QB at the college level this year.

Talk of Grantham leaving for MSU has Browns mute

Friday, November 17, 2006
Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter

The Browns would not comment on rumors coming out of East Lansing, Mich., that defensive coordinator Todd Grantham will be named head coach at Michigan State on Monday.

MSU wants to name a coach by Thanksgiving, but none of the candidates has yet to meet with the university president, according to an NFL source.

Grantham is in the running for the job, along with Pat Shurmur, Eagles quarterbacks coach, and Bo Pelini, defensive coordinator at Louisiana State.

On Monday, Browns coach Romeo Crennel said he would not comment further on the prospect of losing Grantham.

Through a club spokesperson, Grantham declined to comment on Thursday.

[color:"orange"]Well I got an inkling that it just might be true...Grantham is leaving us.

Oh well - hopefully he won't rape our staff - Mel Tucker??? to build his own.

I thought it was odd that he was available for interviews after the Falcon game and had given his own video on the Browns home board this was very unusual from an asst. coach of ours as usually they are off limits to interviews.

Wonder if the door was opened by RAC cause Grantham is as good as gone???

We will of course survive. This is the way the industry is going...shame we can't keep a good Coordinator for more than 2 seasons though. At least Weise and RAC won several SBs before they set loose from the Pats but they achieved the ultimate goal as assts. Grantham didn't achieve squadoosh yet.

[color:"orange"]This board...probably due to the rumor vs. confirmed fact policy which it holds. Grantham Gone 100% although likely is not confirmed and still on the rumor list...so a thread claiming it as fact cannot be validated. ASSuming that is what occurred.

So is that what happened to the other thread?

I like the leniancy on this board way better then DT, but rumors with a link should be allowed. Thats part of the sports world. It makes sports fun, fun to talk about and is really no differant than speculation. Even periodicals such as newspapers and sprots magizenes have rumors. So does sports talk shows. Thats part of the sports universe. Why cant it be allowed here? I was diappointed to see that last thread deleted, as well as the savage to the Titans thread. if it does happen, then it was more then a rumor. A lot of rumors have validation.

Some other sports boards i inhabit actually have forums dedicated to rumours, particularly english football with all the transfer speculation. It's Paper Talk mostly, the journo's need to fit the back pages with something.

The fear here is that rumours are sometimes presented as fact and people go monkey poo over it.

[color:"orange"]No idea Legal...if you notice this thread states "could be" with ???

The one you say was deleted sort of was stating it as a Matter of fact not probable.

Until its confirmed it is not fact.

That is my guess on why it was deleted.

I am not one with the powers to be...but it seems fair to keep it as Fact only...if rumor then to be stated as a possibility like this thread. Seems the right way?

First, thanks to all for the follow up posts. Many of you have heard alot more on this topic than I have and loved reading them.
.

I personally believe your right EO'. I specifically put all those question marks in there because of how strict DT always was with posts.
.

Savage to Titans?!?! WHat? I haven't heard that RUMOR yet. fill me in man.

According to the reports, Michigan State will name Grantham to the post on Monday replacing John L. Smith. MSU (4-7) finishes their season on the road at State College, PA., against Penn State and is not eligible to play in a post-season bowl game.

Published reports originating out of Cleveland have defensive coordinator Todd Grantham leaving the Cleveland Browns to become head coach of the Michigan State Spartans.
According to the reports, Michigan State will name Grantham to the post on Monday replacing John L. Smith. MSU (4-7) finishes their season on the road at State College, PA., against Penn State and is not eligible to play in a post-season bowl game for the third straight season.

Neither head coach Romeo Crennel, nor Grantham himself would comment on the reports. What is known is Grantham quickly became the leading candidate after former Detroit Lions and San Francisco 49ers head coach Steve Mariucci removed his name from consideration.

Mariucci confirmed to FoxSports Radio what GSN reported over two weeks ago, that he met with MSU's brass for three hours, at which point he took himself out of consideration. This debunks several local reports from print media stating that Mariucci was never under consideration by MSU.

Grantham is the recommended choice of former MSU and current Miami Dolphins head coach Nick Saban who remains close with MSU basketball coach Tom Izzo. It is believed that Izzo asked Saban who would be the right person for the job.

If the report is true, it shows how much Grantham loves Michigan State. He is one of the NFL's hot coordinators and would likely be under consideration for any NFL vacancies that might arise this offseason.

Grantham has reportedly also been interviewing NFL and collegiate coaches around the league to begin building a staff. If he gets the job, he is expected to ask Browns defensive backs coach Mel Tucker to join him as his defensive coordinator, but Tucker could be a candidate for Grantham's old job in Cleveland.

There is some thought that he might keep offensive coordinator Dave Baldwin in place, at least for next season to retain recruiting continuity. High profile commit Keith Nichol of Lowell is believed to have some loyalties to Baldwin.

Grantham, the former MSU defensive line coach and assistant head coach to Saban in the late 90's, would be an inspired and solid move by the MSU administration. He would build a strong, defensive minded, disciplined team.

This is not a tragedy, whoever is working under TG learned a lot and Romeo ain't no D slouch, either. Sure coaches are important, but this game is mostly about players.

Congrats to Grantham, good luck, and thanks for your work with the Browns.

Good luck in that recruiting hell hole in East Lansing, as you watch OSU/Mich/ND gobble up all of the "A" prospects in the midwest.

which thread would you like me to put them in? the speculation thread that he could be gone? This is comfirmation that he will be gone... completely different. I think this one should be left the way it is... I could agree on the Bodden droughns one but there was some tidbits that I could make a sepeate thread on or I could leave them in one article... I just thought it was easier to have the whole article instead of pieces parts.

It won't matter; its RAC's "D" not Grantham's. Is he a good coach? Yes, but its not like he put the system together...Romeo could take it over for the meantime if needed. Its a proven defence that won NE 3 superbowls and it will continue to get better with or without TG.

There is a thread on the Bodden/Droughns injuries on the Game Day forum. Your update would have fit nicely there.

This article should have went on the Could Grantham Be Gone thread. This latest article is not "confirmation." Let me point out a few key sentences for you:

Quote
According to the reports, Michigan State will name Grantham to the post on Monday replacing John L. Smith.

According to the reports. No confirmation.

Quote
Neither head coach Romeo Crennel, nor Grantham himself would comment on the reports. What is known is Grantham quickly became

No confirmation.

Quote
If the report is true,

If............No confirmation.

Quote

Would be.....Again, no confirmation.

I am not saying the move won't happen. It just hasn't been confirmed yet. Thus, this article should have went on the existing thread. Of course, the refs apparantely agree w/you.

Be happy, your name is in the lights.

Let's just hope this isn't true.

What inclines me to think that it isn't true (yet) is the fact that there isn't anything on ESPN about it and they usually report a coaching vacancy being filled several days ahead.

I hope it isn't but let's face the reality that Grantham, either to the Pros or College Ranks, will not be our DCord for much longer.

I'd hate to see Grantham go but that is life in the NFL. The system is in place and, for the most part, the players are getting the job done. If he leaves, then the Browns will be the ones poaching for a replacement.

It would be ideal if Tucker gets the job assuming he's up to the task of coordinating an entire D. Remember, as good a job as Grantham has done, he makes no tackles, rushes no QB's, intercepts no passes, stops no runners, and covers no receivers. Go Browns!!

I agree, but he does put them in position to make those plays.

Absolutely. As I said, "The system is in place..." RAC knows a thing or two about coordinating a D so in the end, it'll be up to the players to get the job done.

j/c. IF this is true do we promote from within or do we go out and get another DC? What does everyone think about Bob Trott, our assistant defensive coach? I personally don't know much about him but his resume looks pretty good.

Quote
Bob Trott was named the Cleveland Browns defensive assistant coach on Feb. 26, 2005. Trott joins the Browns with nearly 30 years of coaching experience, including five seasons in the NFL with New York Giants and New England Patriots. Trott spent the last two years at the University of Louisiana at Monroe as their defensive coordinator.

Beyond his NFL coaching experience, Trott?s experience includes serving on the coaching staffs of 11 college bowl teams and has been a defensive coordinator at five NCAA Division I-A universities, including Arkansas and Clemson. Trott has served as a coach or player under renowned head coaches: Bill Parcells, Al Groh, Ken Hatfield, Fred Goldsmith and Bill Dooley.

Trott played at North Carolina under coach Dooley and began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Chapel Hill in 1976. Trott entered full-time coaching at the Air Force Academy in 1978, handling the defensive ends for Bill Parcells.

In 1984, Trott moved to the University of Arkansas and was defensive backs coach for the Razorbacks (1984-88) before being promoted to defensive coordinator in 1989. Trott helped Arkansas win Southwest Conference championships in 1988 and 1989. Trott went to Clemson in 1990, serving as the Tigers' defensive coordinator as well as handling the defensive backs. The Tigers led the NCAA in total defense in 1990.

In 1991, Trott moved up to the NFL, joining Ray Handley's staff at the New York Giants as a defensive assistant. Two years later he rejoined Parcells in New England as defensive backs coach.

Trott became a defensive coordinator again in 1996 when he joined the Duke staff. He moved to Baylor as defensive coordinator in 2002 before coming to Louisiana-Monroe the following season.

Trott was born in Concord, N.C., on March 19, 1954, and grew up in nearby Kannapolis where he attended A.L. Brown High. He played safety at North Carolina, earning three letters under Dooley and serving as a senior captain in his final season. He also excelled in the classroom, making the all-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic team in 1975. He received a bachelor's degree in business from UNC in 1976, and in 1982, was awarded a master's degree in education.

Trott and his wife, Barbara, have three children: Amanda (22) is a recent graduate of North Carolina and is now in law school; Nathan (20) is on a football scholarship at Elon University; and Brittany (16) is a high school junior.
Coaching Background:
1976-77 University of North Carolina, graduate assistant
1978-80 Air Force Academy, defensive ends coach
1981-83 Air Force Academy, defensive backs coach
1984-88 University of Arkansas, defensive backs coach
1989 University of Arkansas, defensive coordinator
1990 Clemson, defensive coordinator

Michigan State hires former Cincy coach DantonioAssociated Press

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Mark Dantonio is back with the Michigan State football program. This time, he's in charge and he has much flashier jewelry.

Mark Dantonio: Coaching Highlights

? Has coached at Ohio, Purdue, Ohio State, Akron, Youngstown State, Michigan State, and Cincinnati.
? Coached under Jim Tressel at Youngstown State and was defensive coordinator during the team's 11-0 regular season in 1990.

? Secondary coach at Michigan State from 1995-2000.

? Defensive coordinator under Tressel from 2001-2003 at Ohio State, including the Buckeyes' 2002 national championship season.

? Named head coach at Cincinnati on Dec. 23, 2003.

? In first season as head coach, Bearcats went 7-5 and beat Marshall 32-14 in the Fort Worth Bowl in 2004.

? Bearcats upset No. 7 Rutgers on Nov. 18, the highest ranked team Cincinnati has ever beaten.

? Finished the 2006 regular season bowl-eligible at 7-5 overall and 5-3 in the Big East.

Source -- University of Cincinnati official athletic Web site

Dantonio, an assistant with the program from 1995-00 and the Cincinnati head coach the past three seasons, was hired Monday as the Spartans' coach. At his introduction, he displayed the 2002 championship ring he won as Ohio State's defensive coordinator.

"I wear this championship ring very, very few times, but I wear it for a reason," Dantonio said. "I wear it to symbolize what can happen when you have the resources, when you have the players, and most importantly when you have the commitment."

He succeeds John L. Smith, who was fired before completing his fourth season in East Lansing. He finished with a 22-26 record. Michigan State finished 4-8 this year and has missed out on a bowl trip three straight seasons for the first time since the early 1980s.

Dantonio becomes the ninth Michigan State coach since Duffy Daugherty left after the 1972 season. Michigan State is barely above .500 since and has won eight or more games in consecutive seasons just once, with one Rose Bowl appearance.

AP/Al Behrman
Mark Dantonio was on the staffs of Nick Saban and Bobby Williams. Now he's running the show at Michigan State.
Dantonio inherits a team that has struggled on the field and in recruiting battles with nearby powerhouses Michigan, Ohio State and Notre Dame.

"If you have an opportunity to compete against the best, you can become the best," Dantonio said. "You have the opportunity to measure up."

The Michigan State Board of Trustees on Monday unanimously approved president Lou Anna Simon's recommendation to hire Dantonio. The five-year contract guarantees him about $1.1 million a year, on the lower end of the Big Ten pay scale. The contract also has a $200,000 signing bonus and incentives.

The 50-year-old Dantonio had an 18-17 record at Cincinnati, including a win over previously unbeaten Rutgers this month. The Big East school is awaiting a bowl bid, but Dantonio wouldn't coach that game. Defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi was appointed Cincinnati's interim head coach Monday.

Dantonio has a defensive coaching background and extensive recruiting experience in the Midwest, two trouble spots for the Spartans under Smith.

Dantonio spent six seasons as a Michigan State assistant under Nick Saban and Bobby Williams before becoming Ohio State's defensive coordinator under Jim Tressel.

Michigan State waited until Cincinnati finished its regular season to interview Dantonio. That happened Saturday night with a contingent including basketball coach Tom Izzo. Simon followed up with a Sunday morning meeting, and they had a contract by Sunday night.

Dantonio received a warm welcome at Michigan State's athletics offices, where many of the same people he knew from his stay in the late 1990s still work.

"I think they did a great job of picking a great guy," linebacker Kaleb Thornhill said.

Other possible candidates included Miami Dolphins assistant Charlie Baggett, Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini, Central Michigan coach Brian Kelly and Philadelphia Eagles assistant Pat Shurmur.
