Nice.
But, we support the troops, not the war.

You don't get it. You're not supposed to notice my blunder, just my intent. To make fun of the French. It's what I enjoy most in politics.

Sorry, I thought this banter begun with me saying that they were Dept of Transportation, and thus NOT Dept. of Defense, and thus NOT military
... and I pointed out to you that it makes no difference whatsoever what department they report into. Title 14 of the United States Code can't state it any more plainly: "The Coast Guard as established January 28, 1915, shall be a military service and a branch of the armed forces of the United States at all times."
Quote:
They are a CIVIL (note, that does not say civilian) entity, not a MILITARY one. Their purpose is not combat, thus they are not military.
Wrong again (see above)...
Quote:
As for your WW2 vets... guess what? They had been attached to the Dept. of the NAVY when that occurred, and those sorts of things occurred ONLY when they were under the auspices of the Navy.... which is a completely different story altogether.
Yet their training was Coast Guard, they remained intact as Coast Guard units as they participated in naval operations and were recognized for war time honors as members of the Coast Guard.
Combat may not be the primary focus of the Coast Guard, but it is and always has trained for combat operations as part of its mission. In fact a Port Security Unit from Cleveland was deployed as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom (an instance where the USCG has participated in war time operations at the President's order and not under the auspices of the Navy).
Quote:
That's odd, I haven't seen a single thing that is military in nature about them.
Let's see...
Boot Camp - yep, they have one. Service Academy (by appointment only) - they have one of those too. Uniform Code of Military Justice - yep, they are subject to it. Participate in Combat Operations - absolutely (when called upon to do so). Codified in US Law as a branch of the military - yup. Military command structure - check. Same (crappy) pay grades as other US military services - indeed. Pretty uniforms - check (though not as cool as the Marine dress unis)
Looks a lot like a military unit to me.

In fact, I'm pretty certain that I've completely refuted every point that you've attempted to make in support of your view.
You haven't refuted anything, but go ahead and keep trying...

I refuted every single thing you had posted up until this point. IF that is what Title 14 of USC states, then fine, they are military... that doesn't mean they don't suck though and they are most DEFINITELY the ugly, red headed step child ...and man did I make you dig for junk or what, lol

Was this for my Favorite? or the one I'd recommend to someone else to join? Cause those are two different things.

Either. Since they're obviously different, I'd like to hear your reasoning. I meant to collect votes of your favorite as in which you're most partial to, for any reason. Most seem to be because of themselves for family members serving.

I can give you my perspective. I was in the Navy and am partial to it. The thing is, Navy life is very difficult, especially if you have a family. Right now we are at war, so life is very difficult for all branches, especially for those in combat.
During peacetime (when I served) the Air Force would be my choice for a service I would like my son to be an officer in. They get (from what I noticed) the best living conditions and services. I was fortunate because I was part of Naval avation so I was shore based when we weren't at sea, so my living conditions were much better then the average sailor.

Stand Navy, down the field, Sail set to the sky We'll never change our course So Army you steer shy-y-y-y Roll up the score Navy Anchors Aweigh Sail, Navy, down the field, And sink the Army, sink the Army gray. Go Navy I remember hearing that for the first time during graduation from basic at Great Lakes. Standing in the drill hall with an old battle wagon painted on the one end. I guess that place is nothing like I remember now. The Air Force spends a ton of their budget on desks and beds or something I read. While Army/Marines sleep in the mud and us Navy guys sleep in a sardine can I'll be honest though, IMO if I ever could go back in active it would be Army. I want to be a boot on the ground so bad. BTW guys, remember that drive we had for my buddy Doug that was in Baquba back 2 years ago in the Muni lot? I just talked to him for the first time in a few months and he is making a career out of the Army, his daughter is getting big, and he just finished DI school so he can't be deployed for a while. He says hi to you guys too and everytime I talk to him he never forgets all the stuff we sent him. Thanks again!
Our honor defend, we will fight to the end, for OHIO! GO BUCKS!

I agree, the Navy is great for a single guy or gal. Great schools, travel ( The Air Force has good schools but most of the time you spend in the AF is in some hell hole in Texas). I think if I was going back in it would be the Coast Guard.

Maybe patrolling Lake Erie, but the USCG here that patrol for drug runners and immigrant smugglers are more "war" oriented with their gunner boats and weapons training.
Then you have the USCG rescue squads in the North Pacific and North Atlantic that go out in some of the nastiest weather and cold to rescue idiots that didn't know to stay home.
They don't all just cruise around on their boats soaking up the rays and waving to pretty girls in bikinis.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.
