The Steelers make a wish come true with a "rookie signing"
Friday, May 30, 2008

Steelers.com

A few weeks ago the Steelers held a press conference to introduce number one draft pick Rashard Mendenhall.

On Thursday another member of the 2008 rookie class was introduced when director of football operations Kevin Colbert welcomed Akeem Havens to the team.

“We got word last week that the National Football League was going to grant us a special addition to our 2008 draft class,” said Colbert. “We had to do some quick work. When researching players for the Pittsburgh Steelers we are always looking for players with high character, a great work ethic and an unmatched willingness to win. Through all of our research we came up with a great young man, Akeem Havens, the latest addition to our draft class.”

A smiling Havens was then presented with his official jersey by Dan Rooney, Sr., bearing the number one and his name on the back.

It was the perfect moment for a kid who deserves nothing less.

Havens “signing” was part of a two-day visit to the Steelers made possible by the Make-A-Wish Foundation that is being filmed to air on ESPN as part of their “My Wish” series the week of June 29.

He spent Wednesday on a tour of Heinz Field that included seeing the press box, scoreboard room, locker room and taking the field through the same tunnel as his new “teammates.”

On Thursday he received a morning tour of the team’s practice facility at the UPMC Sports Performance Complex and then it was time to meet the media.

Like any other player, Havens had to face the questions from reporters, including what advice he would give to his new teammates.

“I have one piece of advice – let’s try to make it an even number of Super Bowl wins,” said Havens, hoping that the Steelers will get number six this year.

After a few more questions quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who is Havens’ favorite player, burst into the media room.

“What’s going on in here?” Roethlisberger asked Havens. “We don’t have time for this. We have practice. What are you doing? Do you want to go to practice? We don’t have time for all of this media stuff.”

And with that, a beaming Havens was off to practice, where he was introduced to the entire team prior to the start of the team’s OTAs.

Havens, who was paralyzed from a car accident when he was seven, opened practice from taking a handoff from Roethlisberger but the best moment came at the end of the practice when he took another handoff and this time worked his way around the Steelers defense to score his first NFL touchdown. Roethlisberger presented him with the ball after the score and then he brought the team together for Havens to end practice.

“It puts things into perspective,” said Roethlisberger of the experience. “It’s great to be able to come out here and see someone like him with such energy and life. The smile that is on his face is so amazing. To think that his one wish was to come out and hang out with us is touching. So many days we come out here and don’t want to be here and he wants to be here. It’s awesome to help him out and put a smile on his face.”

After practice Havens, along with his parents and younger brother James, had lunch and then it was off for film work, or in this case video games against Roethlisberger.

“His wish was to hang out with us so this was a no-brainer,” said Roethlisberger. “I was excited to have him here. The rest of the guys were too. I think he had a great time to. It was as fun for him as it was for us.”

The Make a Wish Foundation is a great organazation. What the Steelers did was very cool. I know all pro sports teams do this kind of thing, but the Rooneys are, and have been class owners. I respect them more then just about anyone else it sports.

That being said, I still hate the Steelers, I hate Black and gold.

Toward the end of his visit he was holding out for a real helmet... so they cut him.

Nice move by the Steelers though.

No need to cut him... Just put him on IR. That would be cool if the Steelers would be allowed to do that, but I highly doubt it. I really like the Make a Wish stories on ESPN.

I was at Progressive Field when the Indians had a young man in, doing similar things. He got to play catch with Grady Sizemore, throw out the first pitch to Victor Martinez, take BP with C.C. Sabathia and do the public address announcing for an inning. Very cool. Kudos to all the teams doing this.

I don't like the Steelers as a team, but I don't really have a problem with their organization as a whole.

This is a great story. I'm sure they really made this kid's day, if not his life.

I just went to one of their fundraisers a few weeks ago in Boardman. I won a silent auction on a autographed Bernie Kosar helmet, and a 11 by 13 signed Steinbach framed photo. (Money well spent) I dropped out on the 24 by 48 framed autographed Quinn picture when it hit 400 bucks.

If you wish to call it yellow, you are not wrong, but to call it gold is not wrong either.

Definition #3 says gold can be a strong to vivid yellow.

Secondly, the Lakers say Purple and Gold, the Packers say Green and Gold, the Oakland A's say gold.

Oh, and "nevertheless" is one word.

All this knowledge I had to provide you, yet you call others inbreds.

Nevertheless , good comments by Brown fans toward the Steelers organization for what they did for this kid. I knew there were Browns fans with class somewhere out there! I just knew it because I'm always right!

I could really care less what the Lakers or the Packers call their yellow. The inbred comment really seemed to bother you. Did it hit kind of close to home?

That really is terrific. It was nice reading that the team members got into it and made the kid feel awesome. Again shows why many consider the Steeler organization class all the way.

Did anyone catch this on Sportscenter? With the 14 year old who was paralyzed getting to go to a Steelers practice and play Big Ben in playstation?

What a great thing.

Honestly...As a Steeler, you want to hate him...but Ben makes it real tough. Donating his playoff checks to the Katrina victims (i think...i know he donated them to people who needed it) and then doing things like this. Ben's just a good guy. I'm glad theres some, cuz for every Chris Henry/Pacman Jones type there needs to be a Big Ben type.

Kudos to him

a 14 year old was in a car accident at 7 that left him completely paralyzed...and his wish was to play Big Ben 1-on-1 in a video game.

So, he was invited for a tour of the stadium, was signed to a contract that Dan Rooney signed in his office and gave him a jersey with his name on it...then Ben came in and told him to get to practice. Then he went and was introduced to the team as a rookie, got to run a play with them (got a handoff from Ben and scored a TD) and then during the Steelers break for lunch, he played Big Ben in playstation (his dad adjusted a controller so that he could play with his chin).

Ben pretty much took him under his wing for a day...it was really cool.

That is pretty cool. Big Ben has been a high character player. It's too bad we'll be rooting against him all his career because he is probably going to retire a Steeler.

Well that's wikipedia so it could be questionable information. I have heard repeatedly that he is not a Browns or Bengals fan, but liked the 49ers and John Elway. Of course the places I've heard that in the past could be wrong I suppose.

Cool for all the little guys ESPN picked, to bad for all the kids that missed out.

You guys make it sound like this was all Bens doing. It was a made for tv segment. ESPN calls Ben Agent and ask "what do you think ....."

I'm not saying this because Ben a Stiler. I think I saw a segment with C.C. coming up or they already did it. Its Hollywood errr Bristol CT.

Again good for the little guys picked. I feel sorry for the kids ideas that didn't make the cut.

I'm almost positive that that is incorrect.. I remember when he came out of college, he was quoted as saying he was a big 49er fan..

I sure as heck wish I could find that article.... it was sooooo long ago now.

Yeah pretty sure the Browns fan growing up is wrong...I too read the 49ers/Elway story....and I am pretty sure he was ANTI Browns because everyone else was PRO Browns...but maybe I have that backwards....maybe he like the 49ers and Elway...but also the Browns since everyone else did.

On a similar not...Ben gave out over $100,000 in grants to Police departments for their K9 programs.....Think he gave a grant to every city the Steelers played in last year...and plans to continue that....as well as other cities in need.

Quote:

Five Super Bowls, 2-0 records for Steelers, 49ers - but what a difference
Posted 9/20/2007 9:15 PM | Comments2 | Recommend1 E-mail | Save | Print |

By Alan Robinson, AP Sports Writer
PITTSBURGH — Ben Roethlisberger can't hide his excitement when talking about the San Francisco 49ers, the team he rooted for while growing up.
Neither can Steelers teammate Hines Ward, who has been in the NFL since 1998 yet will play San Francisco - like Big Ben, his favorite team as a kid - for the first time on Sunday.

Steelers liking the 49ers? That's a switch.

"Pittsburgh and San Francisco were the teams that I grew up watching all the time," said Ward, who was raised in suburban Atlanta. "Joe Montana, Jerry Rice. Getting the opportunity to play San Francisco is definitely one of my craziest dreams because never in my wildest imagination would I think I would be playing against the San Francisco 49ers."

Roethlisberger is a little different. He is from Findlay, Ohio, an area better known for its Browns and Bengals fans, yet he very much wanted to play for the 49ers. He wears No. 7 in honor of John Elway, but the 49ers were his team.

He doesn't hide that fact, either, even if the 49ers are looked upon jealously by some in Pittsburgh for winning five Super Bowls before the Steelers did. The Steelers won four during the 1974-79 seasons, but didn't win their fifth until two seasons ago. The Cowboys are the only other team to win five Super Bowls.

"The 49ers were my favorite team growing up, I was a Joe Montana and Jerry Rice guy," Roethlisberger said. "This is my first time getting to play them, so I'm kind of excited about that. Everyone knows the rich tradition of both teams, but the two teams are different from they were back in the day."

No kidding.

Back in the '80s and '90s, the 49ers were a stretch-the-field team that didn't have a single 100-yard rusher in their five Super Bowl victories. Now, much of the offense comes from last year's No. 3 NFL rusher, Frank Gore, who had 81 yards against the Rams last weekend and is coming off a 1,695-yard season.

However, 49ers quarterback Alex Smith hasn't resembled Montana or Steve Young yet during a brief career that's decidedly a work in progress for the No. 1 pick in the 2005 draft. Coach Mike Nolan is already being asked if Smith has regressed, not progressed, despite the 49ers' 2-0 start.

This might not be the easiest way for Smith to find his way, going against a Pittsburgh defense that has allowed a league-low 10 points in two games. The Steelers also have 10 sacks.

"He's watching film right now saying, 'What the heck are they doing?' " linebacker Larry Foote said. "Hopefully he'll be thinking about us all week and coach (Dick) LeBeau will show him something a little different."

New Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, according to the players, is giving defensive coordinator LeBeau more freedom than former coach Bill Cowher did to tinker with the numerous blitzes and alignments he throws at offenses.

Smith's 252 yards passing in two games are the fewest in the league for a QB who has started two games, except for Buffalo's J.P. Losman (251 yards). Losman couldn't generate anything while throwing for only 154 yards in a 26-3 loss in Pittsburgh last weekend.

And Cleveland quarterback Charlie Frye was so bad during the Steelers' 34-7 victory on opening day, he was traded a couple of days later.

Despite San Francisco's tight victories over Arizona (20-17) and St. Louis (17-16), there are visible worries in the 49ers' camp about the lack of productivity. Wide receiver Vernon Davis, who has only four catches for 27 yards, went to Nolan and asked why he wasn't getting the ball.

Nolan didn't exactly give Smith an overwhelming vote of confidence in replying to a question about whether Smith is taking a step back.

"It's too early to tell," Nolan said of Smith, who has yet to throw a TD pass.

The coach gave a similar answer when asked if Smith was showing improvement, saying, "In two games, he hasn't shown much."

No doubt offensive coordinator Jim Hostler would prefer the emphasis to be placed on the 49ers' record, not the way they got there.

"This year, we've got higher expectations and that's why we have the feeling that we have inside right now," he said. "We're not happy with what's going on. The inconsistency we have in the offense has to be corrected for us to go forward."

By contrast, the Steelers were balanced in their first two games, with Willie Parker going over 100 yards both times and Roethlisberger throwing a career-high four TD passes against the Browns. It won't help the 49ers' defense that linebacker Manny Lawson injured a knee in practice Wednesday and will miss the rest of the season.

Pretty smooth transition for the Tomlin era so far, correct? By winning, the Steelers can start 3-0 for the first time since Cowher's first season in 1992.

"It's not coach Cowher's team any more," Ward said. "It's not coach (Chuck) Noll's team. It's coach Tomlin's team and he's going to do it the way he wants to, and that's what he established early on. So far, guys are buying into it."

The entire organization was really classy with this kid. All the Steelers went over and talked with him, they let him "run" a play, they signed him to a "contract". It was a great gesture.

The organization itself has always been a class act. The support that they gave us when Modell made his move was pure class. They may be rivals, but they're an organization that I can respect. Their fans, however......totally different story.
