As far as the slavery issue goes, I fully admit that the vast majority were white. The problem that I have is when people SOLELY blame the whites for slavery simply because there were others who also owned slaves...including blacks.
As far as my lineage goes, if I were to embrace everything it would take ten minutes to say everything. Heck, I even do have a lot of African-American in me but you would never hear me say it. I even had a friend who got the crap beaten out of them in high school for saying she was African-American. You see, she was from Africa somewhere and her entire roots are over there (I can't remember exactly what country). When her family legally came to the US and became citizens, she started calling herself that as well but the black community in Tampa didn't like that one bit.
I have no problem with people paying homeage to their roots. But it is these gray areas which perhaps have me not liking this term. By every example that you gave, she truly was African-American, born and raised. Born and lived in an African country just like every relative in her past and moved to the US at the age of 13. But since the color of her skin was white, I had to visit her in the hospital since she used the term African-American for awhile thinking she was honoring her heritage.
