He's talented injury insurance though

If Lewis got hurt, I would be comfortable in either Wright or Harrison..

I am ready to be stunned and amazed. He is a true athlete who needs to finish getting his head around the game. Counting on just Lewis is getting dicey. I think this kid was underrated when drafted. Hope he is all that to the degree I suspect that he is when I have seen him thus far. Breakout years are tough with somebody like JL in front of you. Can be all that he can be come gameday! Never surrender!

Carries are more important to a back like Harrison over a back like Lewis.

Barry Sanders has a whole lot of 2 yard carries.

The point is that quick backs get their yards in big chunks. If you only run him 2-3 times a game, the odds are he won't get the big carry on one of those 2-3 plays.

If we ran him as much a Lewis, he would gain about the same amount of yards...he just gets it a different way.

I hope he gets a lot of 1st team reps in the exhibition games.

Get him returning punts if we insist on him being a special team guy...I would like to get Cribbs off the field some of the time so he is fresh enough we can incorporate him into the O a bit more.

I gotta be completely honest here.. I really get the feeling this is a do or die year for Harrison..

But to be blunt about it, everytime I remember that he touched the ball, it seemed electric.. He's got a burst (or so it seems) that when he finds a hole, he's gone..

So I hope that he'll prove worthwhile enough for RAC to feel he needs to be active..

This is the year.. he either gets in, or he doesn't and maybe never will....

Or maybe the year Romeo finally gets it??

Semi-kidding, but like I said, if he can produce as a back, figure something else out on ST.

Well, sorry Mr. Rogers, if you can't run a 40 under 5.0, I can't use you.

Makes no sense to me

I think the difference between you and many posters on this thread bud, is that you place more value on a second, or third string running back, than many others do on first string special teams.

Or possibly because I don't think he is a "third" string runningback other than he can't pass Romeo's special teams litmus test.

I absolutely agree with this thinking. I think his inactivity last year was more because of needs in other areas. We had to carry extra guys on defense a few times because of people playing hurt.

If you ask me, reading some of these responses tells me that many people in this thread did not see him carry the ball. They are judging him on other peoples opinions. Harrison could start in this league, and I don't doubt that a bit. His problem right now is Jamal Lewis is the starter. Wright is an awesome blocker, and a ST hound. Those who say he can't block forget the big block he thru last year to spring, I forget who it was, for a kick return. It was preseason, but it still was a key block.

I think many will be surprised at the contribution he makes this year. When a guy plays RB in college and nothing else, it's going to take time to learn other aspects of the game. Mark my words, Harrison is not just another shifty back, this kid has talent. He had in in college, and IMO is being groomed to replace Lewis.

I hope Harrison can step up the plate this year.
I think he has a ton of talent, only hope he can make it known to the people making the decisions on how many touches he gets per game.
Learning to block is more of a mental thing than physical I think.
He probably never had to block while in college, and needs to learn technique as much as anything.
Not many running backs are going to block a 300 pound defensive tackle or end, you just have to slow them down or knock them of course a little so they don't have a free run at the quarterback.
From what he has shown in the preseason, I don't think running with the ball is questioned by the coaching staff.
Hopefully he can contribute on special teams enough to be on the active roster, then I think he will get some touches in almost every game.
Just my opinion though.

I agree.

Even if you can't grass stain someones butt, you can try to do that.

Again....and I am serious here, if that is the problem and he isn't trying, then we need to cut the guy.

Just to inject *gasp* a minor voice of reason into this thread .......

Jerome Harrison had carries in exactly 4 games last year. These games were against the Dolphins, Rams. Jets and 49ers. These were all teams in the bottom 3rd of the league against the run.

He had a total of 23 carries on the year.

The Browns "spotted" him effectively. He has yet to prove that he will be anyhing except the type of player who might, occasionally, catch a particular team off balance.

He has a long, long way to go to prove that he's anything other than another player with some potential.

While I agree that he hasn't proven anything, there is a caviat.. he's not had many opportunities in real games to prove anything.

That could be because we have Lewis, it could also be that Harrison hasn't proven worthy in practice.. I really don't know.

But it is what it is..

if Lewis was not in the picture I would feel comfortable with this:

#1 RB: Harrison
#2 RB: Vickers ( Franco Harris made the switch don't say it can't be done)
#3 RB: Wright
#1 FB: Ali
#2 FB: ?

JH and Vick could split carries. I don't think this idea is new either....

Three Questions With Jerome Harrison

By Lane Adkins
OBR Football Analyst
Posted Jul 3, 2008

The running back keeps working, and looking for opportunities. We spoke to him at the Browns recent mini-camp...

Q: Jerome, coming off a successful collegiate career you have had limited opportunities to this point here with the Browns. Heading into your third season, where do you see yourself at this time in regards to playing time and making an impact with the Browns?

JH: I've learned a lot since coming to Cleveland and know that eventually my time will come and I have to be ready. We have good backs here, Jamal (Lewis) is great, Jason Wright can play and I am working hard to get better in all aspects of the game.

Right now, I am working on everything. My ball handling skills, pass catching, blocking and special teams responsibilities. I'll do whatever is asked of me, I just want to contribute in any way I can.

Q: We've noticed you spend time after almost every session working with a member of the staff on your game. What is the basis for the additional work you are doing and do see progress in your game?

JH: It's all about getting better, being prepared. If you don't work for it, you won't get it or be ready when that time comes for you. I know there are things that I can improve upon and feel it is important to be as physically and mentally ready as you can possibly be. The more you work at a goal, the better you become as a person and a player and I know I can only get better.

Q: You've had some success in the limited opportunities you have had running the football for the Browns. Does it bother you that you haven't gotten on the field more to show your talent in game situations?

JH: Sure it bothers me, I would like to be playing more, but I understand the situation too. With a guy like Jamal (Lewis) here, you have to wait your turn and capitalize on the opportunity when it comes. Jamal is a great back and he had a great season. I have learned a lot from him... he has taken time with me to improve me as a person and player.... he really deserves to be where he is.

The only thing I can do is keep working, showing the coaches I am ready to play when called on. I know I can play in this league, I am confident in my ability, which is why I keep working on all the aspects and responsibilities of my position to be a complete player.

The coaches here are willing to work with you, they want you to get better and they let you know what they expect and where you can improve as a player.

It's really nice to hear that JH is working at getting better, thats the key to any future success he may have, hard work. He needs to improve his special teams play period. "IF" he can get that done, then he becomes a factor on the offense, and I perfer JH as the change of pace guy over JW. Although JW is a great blocker, and fills that roll very very well.

The bottom line is tho there is a perfect roll for JH to play on this team, but he has to earn a roster spot come game day by being a solid ST guy 1st. I sure hope he can make it on ST because I really think JH could make a huge difference as the change of pace guy..
