Did you ever see the two most expensive bottles of wine they have at Bern's in FL?

They were bottled in the 1700's around the time of the Rev. War/Constitution and I think they're worth upwards of $6,000.

I have eaten there many, many times. While I don't recall the exact wines you mention, I do know many of the wines cost more than a steer would.

The place is really a world class wine cellar that just happens to sell great cuts of beef, fish, pork, and poultry.

I was told they hold vintages of Petrus that even Petrus doesn't have anymore.

Look what I just found for a case of Petrus, 61

Petrus, Pomerol (150cl) case price, 1961 Open in New Window $183876.00
Case of 6 Mags
04-Jul-2008

Go ahead and buy a case, I will bring the prime steaks.

I won't skimp either!! I will bring 2 inch Kobe ribeyes if you like.

I can't believe there are 3 people here who typically spend more than 60 a bottle.

For me it's red...Shiraz or Merlot. There's a place here called the Anderson's, and they have reviews and ratings hanging on the shelves that are pretty trustworthy. I can usually find something really good in the 10- 20 dollar range.

The Anderson's has a great wine selection. Shocked the heck out of me when I saw it. Who would think that a place called "Anderson's General Store" would be a great place to go for wine? And they do carry my favorite Merlot...Dona Paula. It's Argentinian. A little sweeter than the typical red, but still a dry wine. It's only slightly sweeter.

Of course, there isn't an Anderson's over here (Akron/Cleveland), but they are an account that I call on, so I'm in Toledo from time to time, so I visit a store when I'm there. Or the Columbus stores when I'm there, or if I'm in Lima.

Jfan, I just realized that you live in Oregon. I live in Maumee and I shop at the Anderson's down here.

They have a Cabernet called 14 Hands and it's about $10. I highly recommend it the next time that you're there.

Heck, maybe I ought to send my wife there more often!!! Many different kinds of beer, apparently wine.....she's in Toledo weekly. On a side note, I used to work right around the corner from there - on Dussel. The place isn't there anymore ( not cause of me I hope )

I'll give it a try. I usually get so caught up reading the ratings sheets I never buy the same thing twice. Thanks.

Maybe there are 3 people who only buy 1 bottle a year to have on New Years Eve...Champagne would qualify.

But I hear you...I drink a lot of wine, buy by the case all the time, and cellar wine...some I have been holding over 20 years now...and no way is my average bottle $60.

Some are way more than that, but a lot are cheapies to drink on a Tuesday night.....looking for that $6 gem that tastes great....then go back and buy the stock up for my everyday drinking stuff.

I'm a non-wine drinker, and obviously you said you drink quite a bit. So I just had a question out of curiousity.

Do you notice a big difference between a $10 bottle of wine and a $60 bottle of wine? Or does it just depend? Or have you spent a lot on a bottle that really wasn't any good?

Yes and no answers to all.

I have had many $10 bottles that tasted great. Spain puts out many good wines that don't have much fanfare that taste great in that price range.

But generally, you notice a big difference. The quality of the grape is better, the wine maker is better, the aging process is better...it's like anything, you generally get what you pay for.

And yes, I have had many expensive bottles I can't say I really liked. Many times simply a matter it didn't suit my nose or tongue. A few times because it wasn't stored properly and in some way the wine was tainted....usually because the bottles weren't stored on their side and rotated in a cool spot at some point in the handling...the cork either starts to rot leaving you with a wine that tastes a bit like soggy cardboad is in the bottom of the glass or air got inside the bottle accelerating the aging and you end up with a expensive bottle of vinegar.
