just saw it, and while im not big on superhero movies, this was a well done, brilliant film. The acting was superb, the plot great, never a dull moment.
two thumbs up

I just saw it too (my wife really wanted to go so I obliged) and didn't think that highly of the film. Ledger did a nice job as the Joker but the rest was rather sub-par. Of course, those are just my two cents.

I thought the acting was a bit stiff and the action scenes, while alright, are typical Hollywood stunts. I prefer old movies (preferably B & W films) to more modern ones.

There is no film more deserving! http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5jb68x_tOGx8QHjI0Cr6C-Vy79OGgD921MAM83'Dark Knight' sets weekend record with $155.34M By DAVID GERMAIN – 47 minutes ago LOS ANGELES (AP) — Batman has sent Spidey packing as king of Hollywood's box office superheroes. "The Dark Knight" took in a record $155.34 million in its first weekend, said Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros., which released the "Batman Begins" sequel. That topped Hollywood's previous best of $151.1 million, set by "Spider-Man 3" in May 2007. "We knew it would be big, but we never expected to dominate the marketplace like we did," Fellman said. The movie should shoot past the $200 million mark by the end of the week, he said. Factoring in higher admission prices, however, "Spider-Man 3" may have sold slightly more tickets than "The Dark Knight." At 2007's average price of $6.88, "Spider-Man 3" sold 21.96 million tickets over opening weekend. Box office tracker Media By Numbers estimates today's average movie prices at $7.08, which means "The Dark Knight" would have sold 21.94 million tickets. The movie's release was preceded by months of buzz and speculation over the performance of the late Heath Ledger as the Joker, Batman's nemesis. Ledger, who died in January from an accidental prescription-drug overdose, played the Joker as a demonic presence, his performance prompting predictions that the role might earn him a posthumous Academy Award nomination. "The Dark Knight," which cost $185 million to make, also broke the "Spider-Man 3" record for best debut in IMAX large-screen theaters with $6.2 million. "Spider-Man 3" opened with $4.7 million in IMAX cinemas. On opening day Friday, "The Dark Knight" also took in more money than previously counted, Fellman said. The film pulled in a record $67.85 million, up nearly $1.5 million from the studio's estimates a day earlier. The previous opening-day record also had been held by "Spider-Man 3" with $59.8 million.

Has anyone seen this yet? Dark Knight IMDB's #1 It's #1 on IMDB's top 250 movies. Granted, it doesn't have as many votes as the other top movies, but it still has over 23,000.

It's at 46,000 and holding strong. I'd give the movie a high rating, but it's not the best movie of all time. We'll see where the ranking is 10 years from now.

I also had ridiculously high expectations for this movie. Most of the movie lived up to the hype for me, but I had some serious problems with it towards the ending.
I thought Heath Ledger's performance was all that and then some. I was so waiting to think it was way overrated, but was pleased to see it was the real deal. Incredible.
I was excited to find out the movie was as long as it was, but it SHOULD NOT have been. I'm not saying I don't like long movies, but this one didn't have quite enough to fill all that time.
Without spoiling too much, the Joker's plan w/ the 2 ferry boats was LAME. Poor idea, poor writing, and poor acting by everybody on the ferries. It was too unbelievable even for a comic book movie.
Also, I HATED how they wrapped up the Harvy Dent story.
Other than those negatives, it was by FAR the best Batman movie ever w/ the best Joker we'll ever get.

I see why people don't like the length of the movie, others had problems with it too...I wish it was even longer!
As for the boat scene...I think it's more believable than a microwave water vaporizer (Batman Begins). I feel it was necessary because (spoiler) It displayed that compassion for human life won out instead of proving the Joker's theory that "these civilized people will eat each other." It gives Batman hope that his fight for Gotham is not lost, it was Bats' single ray of hope in a movie that otherwise put him through the ringer.
As for Dent, (more spoilers) I too was disappointed because it's one less villain option, but keep in mind they never truly said he was dead, only implied it. Perhaps Harvey Dent is dead but Two-Face lives and Gordon and Bats are covering it up. Otherwise, this version of Two-Face was only going to go after those who were responsible for his disfigurement and the death of Rachel, and he pretty much took care of it in this movie.

Its not that I didn't GET the meaning behind the ferry scene. It's that the pacing of it, the writing of the lines, and the acting was bad. It drove the movie to a screaching halt for me. And as much as I liked the movies Friday and the classic, No Holds Barred. "Tiny" Lester had no business having that much screentime in a Batman movie. As for Harvy ***SPOILER*** I also think he's still alive. I just think they should have introduced him as Two Face and made his last scene the one w/ the mob boss in the limo. The whole scene w/ him holding Gordon's family hostage was too much and tacked on a little too much extra time in my book. I know you'll say they needed it so that Batman could look like he killed/hurt Dent and then look like a villain to the cops in the end, but they could have accomplished that when he was taking out SWAT team guys in the building the Joker was in.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=daily&id=darkknight.htmBiggest 5-day gross in history... In 4 days. Only a few hundred thousand off the 6-day record which will most certainly go down in the record books. This movie is shaping up to be HUGE, and the word of mouth has been similar to Titanic's. So many people I know keep talking about it, and they haven't followed it nearly as long as I have.

My husband and I saw it Friday afternoon. I loved Ledger as the Joker, but I thought that the movie was way too long, not enough of a plot. I think that a lot of the scenes were scary enough that this should have been rated "R" not PG-13. Also, Batman's voice was very annoying to listen to.

I've got to say, there were a lot of parts that were overshadowed just because Ledger's performance.
It's hard to see how Ledger's performance DOESN'T get him an oscar, death or no death. Easily the best character of all time for me because what Ledger did was take Joker out of the comic books and put it on the big screen.
OTOH, I think if you aren't a big Batman fan, you aren't going to like this movie. And if you aren't a deep thinker, you are DEFINATELY not going to like the movie. Every scene was just so important to the overall film that it warrents a second viewing, maybe even a third.
you had a good run Hank.

Ain't that the truth. This definitely was NOT a "shallow popcorn flick." I've seen it twice and I still feel I missed a lot of the depth. Hell I've seen Batman Begins a bunch of times and I still feel like I'm uncovering newfound depth in the dialogue and the screenplay.
TDK is one of those rare blockbuster movies that doesn't play down to a typical "blockbuster audience," yet is attractive enough to the blockbuster audience.
I hope it ushers in a new era of cinema, proving to the suits that yes, you CAN make an intelligent film that appeals to the masses.

Not to be morbid here but given Ledgers performance in this film do you think it would be possible that it may have put him over the edge??
His performance was erie as he played the part to a tee..

Nah, after filming he did an interview and said it was the most fun he's ever had playing a role.
He did look sleepy though...arguably it was his next film he was shooting that did it to him.

based on what I've read in the plot summary there's some ethical questions in there. That would be a good way for teachers/educators to work some TDK elements into their ethics/sociology/philosophy classes. Maybe not for a whole semester but maybe for a segment of their lesson plans. I will probably wait until it comes out at the $1.50 theaters at Loewmann's Plaza to see it or rent it on DVD.
My heart says it wants to see it now, but my rational head says, 'don't give into instant gratification' and just wait a few weeks/months for the price to drop or for it to come out on video. Too many of my 20-something friends want to see, do, experience things now now now!!! That's what's ruining America in some ways.
I'm willing to wait to see a classic after the hoopla dies down.
It sounds like a great movie but right now not worth spending $8.50 on a ticket for. I want to see it but at the same time I'd rather feel relieved I'm not getting socked in the mouth for ticket prices. Maybe I'll see it Nov. 4--my 25th birthday!

I just can't get over all the drama here. It's a movie. It does not hold some secret. It's a batman movie.
Ammo, I don't care if you took a class about cartoons. This is still a movie. Nothing more, nothing less - their is no "deeper" meaning. Heck, "batman" got arrested in England for allegedly abusing his mother and sister, for crying out loud. And the joker is dead. What's the deeper meaning in that? Oh - don't beat on women, and don't o.d.
This is a freaking movie. I'm glad people like it. I'm glad it has sold so well, because that means people are still going out and spending money. But it is not a life altering thing.

I hear ya, Arch, and totally agree. I liked the movie, but this has gotten kinda dumb. I thought Ledgar was awesome, but going to this movie didnt make me more intellectual or something
In all seriousness, I am not a movie guy or anything, but I thought it was worth a Sunday evening out at the theater. I would recommend it if you get bored one of these nights

I hope you don't mean that when I said deep thinkers, I meant outside the context of the movie.
When I said non-deep thinkers wouldn't like it, I meant in the context of the movie. It would be hard and a stretch to apply anything in this movie to real life.

Here's what my cousin said about the movie...she's one of those intellectual types, works at a museum, etc. She responded to my away message which was a quote about a certain "magic trick" in TDK...
"eep! I just saw that movie! it was FANTASTIC...and unexpectedly thoughtful on the lines of utilitarianism, paternalism, and a bunch of other ethical tensions. i'm such a nerd.
i'll admit i didn't watch the part w/ the pencil - i'm not opposed to violence in movies (in fact, i would have been sad if they took it out - violence is necessary in films that are intrinsically violent), but i'm such a wimp about watching the violence done to individuals. too painful to even think about. a pencil? OUCH."
So, there really is ethical and social commentary in the movie.

I wasn't referring to anything you said in particular.....I'm just stating my opinion on the overall tone of this thread. It's a movie. If american society can get this worked up over a movie and treat it like it's the coming of Christ..............geez. I have not seen it. I will not see it. I've gone to the theater exactly 2 times in the last 2 years. But for some people to say they've seen it once, or even twice, but still feel they are missing the deeper meaning and there fore want to see it again - it's crazy. Especially Ammo - since he's so hard up for money. Hopefully he puts his windows down on the way to the theater so that he gets twice the gas mileage he would get using the a/c. At least he can save some of that "hard earned" money.

I saw Step Brothers on Thursday. There is definitely some kind of depth, and ethical lessons in this movie. I think it has something to do with divorce in American society. I might have to watch it again to make sure.

It's a movie, yes.
But why are books any different? Should we say "It's just a book?" No, we're encourage to analyze books. We spend years in school analyzing books. Why should we not be encouraged to analyze GOOD film? We're not talking "Meet the Spartans" (one of the dumbest decisions I ever made to see a movie) here. We're talking a quality film based on a mythos that has decades of source material that is rich in psychology and philosophy, and the director and writers have tapped that material to perfection.
And you refuse to see the movie, so how can you comment on it?
And it's not so much about a deeper meaning as it is about analyzing foreshadowing, use of lighting to depict characters and situations in different ways, little bits of dialogue that you miss even the first and second times around, etc.
But since you won't see it, you won't try to understand it. And people always scoff at what they don't understand.

Sorry - I haven't "had a class about cartoons" as you have. That class and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee at the local gas station. I just don't understand this "deeper meaning" you are striving for.
Honestly, it's a movie. You will not get a job based on you understanding of it I do believe you have let the few people that say you are a good writer go to your head. This is not an essay, nor is it a "class" in college. It's a movie. I'm laughing at the "insight" you put into it. Trust me here - no one will care what your views are/were about this movie when it's time to get a job. Not even your parents.
Save your Mr. Intelligent writings for something that matters. Aside from Asiandawg, you're not impressing anyone here. In fact, you are digging yourself a deeper hole. You want to be taken seriously, but the most serious posts you can come up with are a batman movie and your cartoon class.
Hey, there's alot of us that took worthless classes. But you don't see us trying to "front" about how much we know based on those worthless classes, do you? Hint: Nobody, and I mean onboey, gives a rat about what you learned in your cartoon class.
If you want to think this movie was good, fine. But don't come across as saying it was life changing for the "deeper meaning"......it only makes you sound like a ......well, like a college student. Trust me, there's a lot of college graduates that post on here. I, for one, am not impressed with you. Go have a beer, let mom and dad pay your rent and call it a day. You like the movie? Fine. Don't tell me there is a "deeper" meaning to it. By doing so you are showing your lack of understanding of what life is.

Bale might be the worst Batman ever, and the only reason I use 'might' is because there have been some terrible Batmans.

No, it was a slightly-more-intelligent-than-average popcorn flick. And the average popcorn flick ain't that smart. Hell, I think the first "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" was smarter than this film, and that is a dead serious statement void of exaggeration (and TMNT isn't exactly the deepest film).
Ledger gave a great performance. The movie was far too long. Bale is awful. Two and a half stars IMO. I think this film is a good example of the hype getting to people.

LOL you're completely sidestepping the point and are simply in attack mode.
Again...we spend years in school analyzing literature...why shouldn't we be encourage to analyze good film? Why shouldn't Citizen Kane and the Godfather be analyzed right there with Shakespeare? And I'm almost positive TDK will be right up there when the smoke clears in terms of significance in its contribution to the art of film, afterall this isn't even close to the Batman movies I'm sure you're thinking of, this one has much more layers of depth in it because the writers and director remained true to the source material and paid it respect. Are we not supposed to study and appreciate the arts?
Sorry to break it to ya, but I've never taken a class on cartoons. Film and graphic novels? Yes.
But I can tell you without even taking a class on cartoons that the good ones (Simpsons, South Park) are rich in philosophy, social commentary and satire. They don't "rot your brain" like people say the "idiot box" does.
You simply just don't understand, and that's ok because many have a hard time wrapping the concept of film and television being part of the arts because its relatively new. Hell, in ancient civilizations, reading and writing we frowned upon because it was seen as "weakness for the brain because it hindered memorization...and that the truly intelligent memorized things."
We're in the "form vs. content" debate now. You're criticizing the content based on the form (film) when you won't even be willing to view the content because of the form.
It's important to have an open mind in life...otherwise we end up hating and fearing things we don't understand.

The movie was great, been following it since day one and it definately exceeded my high expectations.
Chris Nolan has cemented himself as my favorite director of all time. He was already up there due to Memento, but this just pushes it over the edge. The man is awesome. Whats really interesting is that all the changes from the first one to the second movie he made them organically as well. Instead of pulling the batpod out of thin air saying "The government made this as well...." its just ends up being an extension to the Tumbler. Or, like when he asks for a new suit instead of not saying anything and acting like the cowl always allowed for full head movement, they actually say something about it. It goes to show the brilliance of the director.
Secondly, There's some awesome themes explored in this movie. And it shows real depth. Kinda hard for a "Comic Book Movie". But, The movie is a brilliant piece of cinema on all levels.
The acting in the movie was off the charts... the only person who really didn't live up their performance was Maggie. Not to say she was bad, it's just that the others just exceeded or nailed their performances. Bale, was impressive in Begins, and continues that performance here easily one of the best Batmans ever. Caine, is the man, the guy has awesome narrative to help Wayne along his way. Ledger, the only way to describe his performance is to say that there was no Ledger the man had become the Joker. He will be sadly missed. Eckhart was awesome as Harvey Dent, as soon as I heard his casting I knew he would be great. He's played awesome bad guys in other movies (Thank You For Smoking, Paycheck) and I knew if it were to get to the nitty gritty he could play someone who has fallen from grace.

Okay, can someone fill me in on some spoliers? How bad is this movie on the death and violence? My wife absolutly hates over-done violence, gore, or unnecessary killing of innocent lives in cold blood. She thinks that movies throw it in just to push the envelope, and it further desensitizes our society to real life death and violence. I agree with her ... but at least I'm desensitized enough to actually watch it. Is it really bad? I don't want to have to leave a movie because it's over the top. Spoil away ... I don't care.

It gets violent. The Joker does something awful w/ a pencil. It is too quick to really see but is brutal on the imagination. Also, Batman does something very painful to a gangster he is trying to get answers out of. People do die, but there isn't a ton of blood. No gore whatsoever. It managed a PG-13 rating.

Some of my 10 year old campers saw it and weren't effected by it.
It's not gory, just heavy. Two-Face is quite gruesome to look at and Batman breaks bones and you hear it (but don't see it).
There's not mindless killings, and the killings all have reason and shouldn't desensitize when taken in the proper context. (as in, some people really do just kill people in cold blood, others have reasons, while you have one person who won't take a life no matter what...all themes that play out)

I just now read this thread and it is more comical than a comic book. I love when people get this overdramatic and analytical about a super hero movie. Fun stuff. Maybe I'm just not a deep thinker.
