And you may be totally correct. I just find it strange that a guy that was probably gonna be cut or traded (DA) had Quinn signed on time last preseason is now mentioned in the same breath as Manning and Brady.
And you know management didn't think those thoughts last year or they wouldn't have drafted Quinn. Guess we'll find out in the next 30-60 days.

None the less, there appears to be clear separation at the position.
It's far better to be hearing this than the guy is stinking up the joint.
But your right...I am sure the first loss will bring out the calls for an examination of the position.
It will be interesting ( for me ) to return to these comments about half way through the season

I find it strange that Brady was a 6th round pick. Sometimes these things just happen.
The more you learn about DA's past, the more it starts to make sense that maybe it's a possibility he can turn into one of the best in the game. Maybe he just never had the coaching.

jc. I seem to recall a certain team that, before anyone had seen him play, told Johnny Unitas to "come back next year". We did not know what we had in DA last year, and we still don't know what we have in Quinn now.
One thing I am not seeing is the comments that "Brady's time will come". IMO this is no longer such a sure thing, at least here.
Now for those supporting "whoever starts", I am still trying to understand the comment that it was hoped DA would take us deep in the playoffs, so we would get more for him in trade when we started Quinn.
Lastly, this deadbate will not end when we trade one or the other. There is obviously a rule that QB controversy Must exist among Cleveland fans.

Good points... The Browns told Len Dawson the same thing they told Unitas too... There really is no QB con-tro-versy... DA is clearly the Browns starting QB without question. The FO has made it clear, the CS has made it clear and the players have too... The QB discussion here is just and only that,... A board topic to beat the crap out of, to kill the dawg days of summer without NFL football.... Nothing has changed since the end of last season in the pecking order @ QB for the Browns... Nor will it anytime soon... Baring and ill timed injury to DA... Let's sit back relax and enjoy our upcoming season!!! These are exciting times...

You forget we did sign him to a 3 year contract. We didn't even consider negotiating a 5+ year contract.
You asked another poster if they were married to a coach and got "pillow talk" to get their full opinion, but now you unequivocally state that we didn't even consider offering him a 5 year contract. How do you know this? Are you married to Trip McCracken?
I don't want to speak for eo but it was reported, from a weekly radio segment that Savage does on 1100?, that they would not consider a 5 year deal to protect the Browns in the event that DA could not repeat his 2007 performance.
This became public knowledge. I'll let someone else do the googleing for proof if anyone wishes.

And I don't see that as supporting Quinn over DA. I see it as the team felt we needed a qb. We drafted quinn. We got our qb. Then DA steps and has a great year. At that time, we had what we thought would be the answer, quinn, locked into a 5 (?) yr. deal, but then the FO said "hey, maybe DA is the guy". Let's sign him. BUT, let's not wrap ourselves up in 2 long term deals for one position. We'll over DA a 3 yr. deal, and then, when we finally decide what we're doing, it'll be easier to trade either one of them.
I absolutely do NOT see DA's contract term yearwise as indicative of anything other than a financial thing and trade thing. If he proves out this year, Quinn will be gone. If he doesn't, DA will be gone. That's the bottom line.

I agree.
We had to protect Quinns ego.....it wouldn't send a good signal to him had we signed DA 6-7 years.
At the end of this season, one of the qbs will be traded and I would think we will put signing whoever is left standing to a extension long before the contract is void.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

I've yet to comment on this thread, but have been reading a lot throughout it. I really like the situation we are in with our QB's right now. Last season, especially during the end of the season, I was a Quinn fan because I watched Anderson regress and drop to the form that I figured he would likely remain at. However, there is obviously something the staff likes about him and how can you not like his arm over Quinn's when he has playmakers such as Winslow, Edwards, and Stallworth on the field. Quinn's check down passed to the backs and Steve Heiden are annoying and he needs to start showing me more.
I've put my trust in Anderson this season and I have a feeling that he is going to really impress and become the QB of the future. Cleveland's Quinn riders will just have to face it that if Anderson can lead this team to the playoffs and possibly the Super Bowl then Quinn is out of Cleveland next season. Anderson doesn't have to put up the same numbers as last season and not show improvement. Cut down on the mistakes and smake smarter decisions under pressure will be vast improvements in my eyes.
If this happens, imagine what we can get for Quinn. a #1 and #3 maybe? With Savage in the front office... trading up to get Beanie Wells, Malcolm Jenkins wouldn't be out of the question. I would love to see Beanie here and this is def. not a homer pick. He is the perfect AFC North back. However, if the injury bug gets him again this year... I'd pass for Jenkins, Vontae Davis, or another RB.
Either way, we are in a great situation and I'm very excited about what the season could have in store. I keep thinking that we could be this years Giants (except there is more of a hype about us during the pre-season)

I like Beanie, but he reminds me of Leigh Bodden. I swear, almost every game I watch, he hobbles off the field for some reason or another.
I'd love to get a top-notch corner or a pass rush specialist, depending on what happens with Peek and Hall. McGinest will be retired in 2009, so he'll need replaced. Malcolm Jenkins would be a nice pick up. I wouldn't be mad if we took Wells, but it's not who I'd go after.

We need a play maker at ILB, then a playmaker at S - we need 'em both in a bad way.
Unless we see pretty big years from Jackson and Jones, I would hope those would be our two biggest priorities in next year's draft.

I don't know about that. If BQ weren't on the team, I'd still be concerned with DA's weaknesses
I agree...Totally...
This ain't a DA vs. BQ thing to the smart fan...This is more of a What is DA doing that could hinder us so much so that it could cost us a Playoff WIN...A Win that would keep us alive with the chance to get to the Big One...To ME anyways...
His weaknesses have been well stated...And whether some wanna see it or not...THEY ARE THERE....
MY #1 problem with him isn't the footwork...It's not the lack of setting himself when on the move...It's not the slingin' mentality deep down the middle...That actually opens up the possibility of HUGE plays...I'll take the Picks for that possibility...We might just finally have a D that can actually bail us outta those situations...I can't remember the last time I was at least HOPEFUL we'd convert a 3rd and 14...Anderson gives us that chance with his arm and Chud's play calling with the weapons we have...And an OL that is superb in protection...And will get even better in blitz recognition with this being year 2 together...
MY #1 problem with him is something else I NEVER REMEMBER SCREAMING DURING ANY GAME AT ANY TIME IN THE PAST 20 YEARS...
It's those short 5-12 yard slants that he's gunning WIDE and/or LOW...These are the ones that leave MAJOR YAC on the field...These are the ones that make me scream "WTF WAS THAT"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...Those were BY FAR his worst attempts last year...
Those are the ones...If improved upon...Improves 80% of Anderson's game...
Although it's been 1 game...The couple he threw to Stallworth were RIGHT THERE last Thursday...
Go Browns!!!

I would have to say the screen passes he throws are also of the same variety..he just never seems to just put the ball out where the back can catch it cleanly..
I have to say there are some fighty people in here... Some say DA will improve..regardless... We really don't know if he will...or won't...and to what degree.. Some say there's a QB controversie.. There's none at the moment..
Some saying we're tied to DA long term..we're not..Savage did not want to present a long term contract to him..it's been quoted , he's said it.. The Browns did not want to go beyond 3-4 years..because THEY ALSO HAVE THE SAME QUESTIONS about DA.. This is his year to prove he belongs a starter...

Boise - there are a certain few that could not care less how good DA is, they want Quinn to be the starter, and nothing DA does will change their mind. Nothing. They will nit pick on everything (like the td pass to b.e. - they say "terrible pass" blah blah blah), yet they forget that it was a touchdown.
They are called Quinn lovers.
Typical Arch.
Try to "label" anyone who doesn't agree with your side. Nothing new there.

And yes, I do expect to see "tendancies" that show he's improved. And just because we have an acrobat for a WR, doesn't mean our QB should have him laying out there all twisted up.
The fact is, all I really want is FOR DA to IMPROVE! And I'm looking for it.
I want a QB with the skill set to be our franchise QB for a "dynasty". If that works out to be DA, I'm fine with that. Though I haven't seen it so far.
DA's game, or lack there of, has nothing to do with Quinn. So you can quit playing word games Arch. Nobody is really buying your kool-aid here..................

You should reconsider your "lable" statement... You just did the same thing Arch did... So, if its not OK for him it's not OK for you... Typical Arch... 2 wrongs or errors don't make a ... Improvemnet by all players is what we all want... Right? DA gets no free pass on here or anywhere from that... I see little if any of that going on here on this topic... Nearly all acknowledge DA's areas to improve in... But too much time and effort is spent on, (nitpicking or call it what your will) those areas when compared to what he does/did well last year... Bullets and snot bubbles aren't flying in games that count, real time, yet... So why continue to worry and bleed before you're cut about things you can't control... Let alone no one has had any where near sufficient time to see improvemnet or judge that improvemnet??? And by the way just because you or I say any player needs to improve in a certain area dosen''t mean they do or will... Additionally, your expectations for a franchise QB's skill set and those coming to fruition don't mean that DA doesn't or won't be that QB... Very few thought TB would be and the rest is history ... We shall see... Very few here buy you're brand of summer drink either... One mans Koolaid is another mans Crystal Light...

I saw "the cuts" last year. My question is, has the bleeding stopped or not?
And once again, you can't tell one way or the other from pre-season. But you can look at his "tendencies" as a sign.
That's pretty much what I have stated. And yes, Arch does "label" those who disagree with him by calling them "lovers" of Quinn. When this isnn't about Quinn at all.
I am looking for tendancies in DA that shows improvement in his areas of weakness from last season. But when you bring that up, it doesn't make you blind because you do that. It doesn't mean you support one more than the other.
To insinuate that is quite typical around here. And I haven't seen these "improvements" that the players and fans seem to indicate.
No, Rome wasn't built in a day. But you could see more being built from one year to the next. So yes, I'm "looking for it". And tendancies are natural reactions. So yes, each time he takes the field I'm looking at and for such tendancies.
You seem to side that I'm looking for wounds that aren't there. When reality dictates I'm trying to see if those wounds are beginning to heal.

So you're looking for improvement, yet continue to nitpick like he's shown NO improvement whatsoever?
I think it's safe to say ALL of us are cautiously optimistic. No one is ready to hand him the keys to perrennial pro bowl appearances or the hall of fame.
It's very simple what he has to work on...throwing short, throwing on the run, improvement in decision making.
Improvement in decision making was happening last year despite his INT's going up (and my theory for that is because he was throwing short more often, but was not hitting the targets). He had a full offseason to work on it, and all the reports say his decision making is improved, as should happen for any 1st year to 2nd year starter who's worth a damn.
Short throws and throwing on the run are things he's worked on all offseason...they SHOULD improve. That doesn't say they WILL, but they should. Based on what I've seen from the LIMITED FOOTAGE I've seen, and the training camp reports, he looks better in those areas. How much so remains to be seen...if he's improved enough to be "effective," watch out because he'll quickly move to top QB status.
EVERYONE knows this, why you continue to beat it like a dead horse is beyond me.
If DA doesn't improve, he doesn't improve. Then we put in Quinn. Why is this so difficult?

Is it that simple? DA won 10 games last year playing like he played (however you choose to interpret it)... so what if he wins 10 games this year and has high 20s in TDs and 4000 yards? What if he wins 10 the year after that with similar numbers? Well then we have to make one of two assumptions... either the rest of the team isn't good enough to get over the hump... or DA isn't good enough to get over the hump..
I happen to be of the opinion that even if he doesn't improve, we could still win 10 games? But you're saying that if we're 6-4, and it looks like DA hasn't improved, we will yank him? Are you sure about that?

I wouldn't have a problem with that. With 6 games left in the season (this mythical season) and a 6-4 record it very well could be time to see if Quinn has "it".
And depending on the situations surrounding these losses I bet I wouldn't be the only one willing to change things up.

You might not, but there isn't a coach or a GM that I can think of that is going to want to yank the QB if they have 6 wins out of (Cowboys, Steelers, Ravens, Bengals, Giants, Redskins, Jaguars, Ravens, Broncos, Bills)... ain't going to happen. 6-4 would have us darn near the top of our division since I wouldn't expect anybody else in our division to be a whole lot better than that... so you might be calling for it and I might be calling for it... but I wouldn't expect it to happen.

You're reading too far into my statement.
If Anderson is what's holding us back and we're 6-4, he gets benched, IMO. (and yes, IMO he DID hold us back near the end last year a bit...if we have 2nd half DA, he'll be holding us back, JMHO of course).
But I don't think that's going to happen. I think we'll see the 1st year to 2nd year improvement.

Let me get this straight.....................
You don't "think" it's going to happen. Yet I am saying "I'm looking for these improvements".
What is it you "think isn't going to happen"?
Let's just be honest for a minute. How many teams did we beat with a .500 record or better last year? What type of D's will we be facing this year compared to last year?
See, I'm not willing to use emotion, or "what I think" about the situation. Fact is, with pads on, in a game, we haven't seen if or what he will do.
You're going on "what you think". And I'm going to go by "what I see". And I saw enough late last year to give me cause for concern.
MANY QB's have "looked good in camp". They've "looked good in shorts". But that's all you have. And in his first pre season outing, nothing of note showed improvement.
So has he improved? We still don't know. But instead of "thinking" what he "might do", I plan to "watch what he does".
And can you tell me exactly what it is you claim "I should be giving him credit for" in the way of improvement we've seen on the field thus far?

Why absolutely I will. And as for what I don't think will happen, I don't think he'll crash and burn like you're so afraid of.
Let's rewind the clocks to Family Night. Anderson threw short, on the run and deep.
-His deep ball had more air on it. One of my critiques from last year was that he threw too many line drives on his deep ball. We saw it again in the 2nd preseason game that turned into pass interference. On a deep throw to Stallworth he hit it perfectly between the corner and safety. One of the things I didn't think he could do well last year was drop it in between a linebacker and safety. I still haven't seen that throw yet, but I'm ENCOURAGED.
-On the run he made two accurate throws to Dinkins and Stallworth...one was a sideline route that had to be perfect or else it'd be out of bounds. Last year in the preseason he couldn't hit the strike zone. EVERY QB has poor throws every now and then. I'm looking for improvement, no question on this. From what I've seen SO FAR, I've seen improvement.
His decision making seems to be better, taking what the D gives him. We'll be able to judge a LOT better after tonight, but last year in the preseason his decision making was questionable at best.
You're looking at last year and aren't looking at THIS year. You aren't giving him a chance in hell of making those improvements. I am, and I'm seeing that he's improved at least SOME so far.
Don't almost ALL first year starters have questions going into their second year? Don't almost all first year starters get figured out at some point? That's what the offseason is for, to work on their deficiencies. And according to reports, Anderson worked his ASS off on his deficiencies.

"This also is to explain where I get my opinion from, not just "thinking" as you say."
Point taken and I'm a firm believer on seeing with your own eyes and forming opinion. Comfort zone...without a doubt, I saw that also in just his one series also I was impressed with his decision making. Nowhere did I state he can't get better.
Oh btw "thinking as you say" sorry actually I was quoting what you said - those were your words not mine...lol

Well talk about rediculous...got news for you...size 16s are just that size 16s regardless if they are on a 6'6" man or a 5'11" man....lol are you kidding me. It ain't the proportion its simply the length and tall has nothing to do with it.
You go and put on a pair of flippers that are 16 inches long and tell me how good your footwork is. You got eyes...I happen to know footwork on a QB. And just as a coincidence he struggles when he has to rotate (like a clock...from 12...going to 11, 10 rarely 9...and vice versa to 1, 2 and rarely 3 and there are fractions in those points as well. Which coincidently happen to rotate faster and quicker for shorter passes. Longer pass are simpler and in a drop back and then step forward with ample time to make the proper step in footwork. Its when coverage is good and forcing a ball would be a mistake...the clock is ticking and he has to check down to his 2...3rd options usually a dump off. Quick lift those size 16 flippers and rotate to 10 oclock and throw that ball accuarately.
I don't know for sure. I'm making an assumption as I do know how hard it is to do that without unordinary long feet. Look at Payton when he's checking down he's constantly pitter pattering his feet and rotating...sees his target and boom...very accurate. Footwork is the Number 1 variable of accuracy...ask anyone in football with the knowledge...heck send an Email to Jaws...betcha he will agree. What I do know is that he is not accurate at it and his footwork is just not there.
This season I see decent footwork on the obvious called short passes for the primary WR in a simple 3 step drop plant the back foot and then rotate the front to step and throw to the target. He has worked on that and has gotten better. It the impromptu check downs that bother me. Cause those will happen against the Superior Defenses which usually are the superior teams which usually are the ones going into the playoffs. I'm in noway stating we are doomed with DA at QB. I know that is possibly the perception some might take from it. I'm just talking football about our Starting QB on a Brown's message board.
I've said all along as noted above by Coach B.
We are in a win win situation. And nothing would make me - a Brown's fan more happier than DA becoming a Stud QB!! I don't care Which one...DA/BQ don't care one bit as long its at least one of them...better yet both

You keep harping or focusing on only what you want to see and talk about... You didn't acknowledge that you labled Arch? You clearly labeld Arch... "Typical Arch"... That is labling... You have every right to your opinion, views and concerns. We all do... You are focusing on areas to improve on that need to be, IMO... But has DA really had a real opportunity and enough time, realistically, to demostrate he has or hasn't improved in his areas of concern? You keep leaning hard on tendancies... But you are really stuck on last year's tendancies... At this point in time... Blind is not the issue... Realisum, realistic expectations and time frames are true issues. Go out in your front yard this evening before it gets dark and pick a point of reference or geography that is some distance away, that you can see easliy and clearly... Then go out when its dark and take a peak at the same point of reference... It's doubtful that you be able to see the same view... IMO thats what you are doing on the DA issue, at this point in time... You don't seem to see any other view or perspective than your own. You seem to have chosen to focus on ONLY the areas that you deem needing improvemnet on... I don't remember even fairly recently, reading a positive DA reply here from you...??? There has not been suficient time for the wounds you elude to, to heal...

I'd caution those that said we'll see a lot more tonight about DA's readiness to lead this team. I'm notta so sure that we'll see all that much tonight. In fact, I think it's going to be a boring as hell game.
These teams play each other the 2nd Monday in October.. I hope we don't show them that much. I'd be happy if we spent tonights game testing out the guys on the line / corners and no injuries.

I've heard the starters are going to play 25 mintues. Finish their series I guess midway into the 2 nd quarter. Could be 3 series on Offense...all depends how long ours are and how long the D stays out there? If we are exchanging 3 n outs and a first here n there....I don't see RAC going to much further than 4 series with the starters.
No razzle dazzle unless its something we want them to think about a lot and not really use it again for quite sometime.
Basic O and Basic D...not too creative on our blitz schemes. We'll save most of that practice with timing against the Lions.

You say that no coach would pull him. What if all 4 of those losses were in a row? And they were the last 4? You gotta remember this is the same coaching staff that pulled their starter after 1 quarter of the opener last year and then traded him 2 days later.
Doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility that they might bench a guy they plucked from the PS to play a guy they traded into the first round to pick.
Look, I don't expect any of this to happen. But to say it can't happen is being naive in my estimation.

Well...
I'm disturbed to say the least.
Even when he had time he showed the same deficiencies as last year.
We're back to square one, with evaluating him, IMO.

25 year old QB who goes to the pro-bowl his first year. Shows some issues, but plays well, overall, and we're back to evaluating him after one bad pre-season game?
It's posts like this one that made Jaft (I'm sure most of you remember him lol), finally snap on Browns fans.

He's showing those same issues that made him generally ineffective in the 2nd half of the year.
Mark my words, he'll more likely find himself on the bench than the Pro Bowl if he can't fix his 2nd half deficiencies.

You are saying he need to go back to evaluating him because of one pre-season game. That's just idiotic. We don't need to evaluate him. We know what we have. A strong armed QB who needs to better know how to read a zone defense, and needs to add some touch on his ball.
I don't think we are back to re-evaluating him because of one pre-season game, that just doesn't make sense.

No, stating that there is a player on this team that doesn't need constant evaluation is idiotic.
Is it idiotic that we are evaluating Wright and Harrison? Or Steptoe and Wilson? Or Wright and McDonald? Or should we just know what we have in them too?

No, we don't know what we have in DA.
We know he HAD serious holes in his game last year and that he has the opportunity to fix them.
The holes in his game make him FAR from the Pro Bowler that he was last year since defenses figured out how to defend him down the stretch.
I've been defending him in recent weeks because I feel he deserves the opportunity to show he's corrected his flaws. Well...last night showed me a little bit...not everything, but a little bit, and what I saw was a lack of improvement.
We still need to see more but I'm not NEARLY as optimistic as I was 24 hours ago.

OK... Points taken... Fair enough... Show me those threads on the other players you mentioned? And then lets have a discussion on your and my contributions on those threads... Then we'll call fair, well fair... It's good and healthy to have concerns about all our players. We should. DA gets too much blame much of the time... He also gets too much credit at times too...
