What are you talking about Excl? According to NBC, we are watching LIVE coverage of the games. Also, I really want to know what that plaque was that they gave him. Has anyone found that online because I've been looking.

Still in awe over that 100 meter finals ... that was just incredible. Almost Bob Beamon-eque ... if Bob were to put his feet down early in celebration and only beat the world record by a few inches rather than a few feet. And NBC is ticking me off. I'm thinking I should start a petition thingy that says I'm TiVo'ing/taping the Olympic coverage because NBC is "taping" it for us any way ... getting my results off the internet, and then watching the events later without any commercials ... get a bunch of people to sign it, and then send it to all of NBC's Olympic sponsors.

Did anybody just see the Pommel Horse final. The American Alexander Artemev almost pulled off one of the best performances I've ever seen, unfortunately he fell off.

I hope this kid tries for another Olympics. I really, really do.
His team pommel horse routine was simply breathtaking. The one he did tonight was harder still (on the front end)- which might have been why he had the error.
This kid has something really special. I hope we get another chance to see him perform on the world stage.

I just ran the math ... if he covered the 100 (109 yards) meters in 9.69 ... he'd be looking at a 3.5 40 time. Granted, he'd probably be slower in the 40, since he'd be accelerating for most of it, rather than running at top speed ... but I'd be willing to bet he'd still break 4-flat no sweat.

Funny.. that was one of the first things I thought when I saw him BREEZE to that easy victory. I almost wish someone was pushing him so he'd go all out for the entire 100. That was pure dominance.
Someone mentioned him racing a cheetah... I think it'd be so entertaining watching something like that... if for no other reason than you'd really appreciate how sickenly fast cheetahs are. 0-70 in 4 seconds. By comparison, no human has ever reached 30mph.

I doubt it. I remember someone did the physics and you'd have to get up to 80 mph in accelerating to run a 4 flat 40.

here's some numbers for ya... I'm using this... http://www.onlineconversion.com/speed_all.htmPut in 10 yps to Mph = 20.45 So with that being said 100 m = 109.361 yds So, 9.69 * 40/109.361 = 3.54s and that equates to about 21mph If someone put in 40yps then yes it'd be 80MPH but... that's bad math. Because we're not running 40yps we're running 40yps per 4 seconds.

I don't think you need 40 in your equation. Just divide 109 yards by 9.69 seconds to get yards per second ... that works out to 23 mph.
Of course, the crux of everything is acceleration. He's not going to go 0-23 in one step.

On a serious note, it wasn't LaPorta's fault. And my main question is why did it take 5 Batters for anything to happen?

Another case of home field? Not really b/c the judges aren't all Chinese, but this sucks here. They both should have got gold or let them do another routine. Something except the current system,,,
He wins tiebreaker over Liukin
By BARRY WILNER, AP Sports Writer Aug 18, 9:05 am EDT
BEIJING (AP)—Nastia Liukin’s loss of an Olympic gold medal couldn’t have come in a closer or more convoluted manner.
The Beijing Games all-around champion from the United States received the same 16.725 score as China’s He Kexin on uneven bars Monday. A tiebreaker was used because dual medals are no longer awarded in gymnastics.
And that tiebreaker was so complex that long after the medals were handed out, International Gymnastics Federation officials still were explaining it.
Suffice it to say that because of the deductions from a perfect 10 for each gymnast in their execution scores, He had gold and Liukin had her second silver and fourth overall medal of these games.
“For me, it’s not correct,” said FIG president Bruno Grandi, who noted the rules for dual medals were dropped in 1997 at the direction of the IOC. “When two people arrive on the same level, they are champions. But this competition doesn’t belong to us. It is the IOC’s.
“I believe it’s correct to have two gold medals, but this is my modest opinion. The IOC is different.”
Liukin would not criticize the scoring system.
“It’s nothing I can control, and honestly, I can say it has been very fair to me, and I got the biggest gold medal of them all,” said Liukin, winner of the gold in women’s all-around gymnastics.
She doesn’t have the latest one, but her four medals tie her father Valeri’s haul when he competed for the Soviet Union. Coincidentally, one of Valeri Liukin’s golds, on high bar in 1988, came in a tie with teammate Vladimir Artemov.
“I tied in my Olympics,” he said with a shrug. “There were people that tied in the all-around back when I was competing. I guess they don’t want that now.”
He Kexin, at the center of an age eligibility controversy—is she really the minimum of 16?—admitted to being surprised by the outcome.
“I didn’t expect to win a gold medal because the more I want it, the more pressure I feel,” she said. “It’s more nerve-racking than competing with the whole team.”
Particularly when it comes down to such a minuscule margin.
Liukin’s silver gave the United States six overall medals. China has five, including team gold.

I thought she got the silver on the floor?
Oh... I assume you mean on the balance beam? (just looked it up). That's awesome. She always has a smile on her face and was always very gracious while winning all those silvers, congratulating the winners. Good for her. For some reason, she always seemed to be getting questionable scores from the judges.

Seriously.. the current system is about as good as flipping a coin. I honestly don't understand why they couldn't just give the gold to both. Apparantly, ties are possible in the world championships, but not he Olympics... atleast since the Hamm saga from the last one. No one should be in 2nd when you're tied for first.
And incidentally, I have a hard time seeing how the two routines scored the same. He took a much larger step on the dismount (cross-over step which the judges killed Shawn Johnson for on her vaults) and they both had the same "non-vertical" handstand issue.
Actually, the scoring was suspect throughout the entire thing except the end of the all-around. It was like they finally figured out, "Maybe we should be giving this Nastia girl higher scores since she's the ONLY one sticking her landings."

Oops, yes I meant beam! I thought she was always very gracious too, but you could sense that she was a little saddened getting second place all the time. Of course you could blame her with NBC's assclown reporters acting as if you are a failure unless you get a gold.

Usain Bolt just broke Michael Johnson's record in the 200 meters. Phelps might of set the new "Phelps standard" ... but Bolt is dominating just as much. I just hope the guy isn't on drugs ...

Did anyone watch the 3 meter mens diving last night? Holy crap was that pretty incredible. The gold medal winner from China averaged over 95 points per dive and won by over 36 points. All 6 of his dives were nearly perfect.

That guy is absolutely unbelievable. There was never a doubt from the gun.
He reminded me of watching Randy Moss when he ran from the Kent State defensive backs.

Yes! US Women in the Gold Medal match! First time in 24 years! Hoping for a rematch against China instead of the Brazilian buzzsaw. I came into this year hoping for a bronze, so win or lose the team has exceeded my expectations.

The International Olympic Committee has ordered an investigation into the age of Chinese gymnast He Kexin, The Times of London reports. Faced with almost insurmountable evidence which suggests that He is two years younger than the birth date listed on her Chinese passport, the IOC has launched an inquiry that could result in the stripping of He's gold medals. This news comes on the heels of another Times report that details the findings of a New York computer security expert who found official Chinese documents that list He's age as 14 years and 220 days. Mike Walker used a Chinese search engine's cache feature to find He's actual date of birth on spreadsheets from a Chinese government website. The spreadsheets were taken down off the site recently and He's name had been removed. Assuming the IOC is committed to a real investigation and not some dog and pony show, the revelation that the Chinese government covered up the ages of gymnasts could end up being the defining moment of these Games for the host country. Officials wanted the Olympics to be a coming out party for a new China. But while the Games have been a huge success, there is a legitimate possibility that China's legacy from Beijing '08 will be that of a massive government cover-up, not the magical Opening Ceremony or the transformation of Beijing or anything else positive. All the good work China did to put on these Olympics could be forgotten because of an unnecessary, arrogant move by the government. Why risk everything to put a 14-year old in the competition when they could have replaced her with an of-age 16-year old gymnast? Sure, He is a better gymnast than the Chinese gymnasts who were eligible to compete, but with the judges they had at the Olympics, would it really have mattered? web page

So if that happens does that mean China gets stripped of its team gold medal as well? perhaps a ban should be placed on them too

I have to say, watching this Olympics, the entire Chinese attitude seems so fake overall.
When the US played China in basketball, all the fans were singing the National Anthem. Now, maybe I'm completely wrong, but I just have a feeling that not half of those fans could have sung the National Anthem 10 years ago. But, then again, maybe they pound that into their heads, who knows.
It's just that when I watch the cheerleaders at the beach volleyball, the fans jostling to get their pictures taken with the track people, it just all seems like "Look how ultra-modern we are! We love everything that is cool! We have cheerleaders! But at the same time, we are so respectful! Our divers bow!"
Everything about these games smacks of a facade by the Chinese, from the fake singing and quasi-fake fireworks at the Opening Ceremonies to the actions of their government to the actions of their fans.
