BEREA - You can tell when training camp has gone on a long time when tempers start to heat up.

That happened Thursday at Browns camp when rookie linebacker Alex Hall had a physical exchange with tight end Brad Cieslak. It started with a few minor pushes after a play. When Cieslak added a going-away push, Hall charged the tight end and pushed him with both hands. Hall then took a full swing.

Coach Romeo Crennel normally doesn't move quickly, but he was quick to get in the middle of the two. He grabbed Hall with both hands and shook him several times.

Crennel said he felt comfortable grabbing a rookie who is trying to make the roster because he figured the kid wouldn't jeopardize his job by swinging at the coach.

Crennel knows the importance of team stability and players being a team. Not a team, like the Ravens, who try to come back and win by out thugging you when they are losing. The Ravens make headlines for a 80 man scuffle on the first day of practice when the pads aint even on. Three years ago, they led the league in personal fouls. Two years ago they had a fluke 13 and 3 season. Last year every game I watched, they got away with 2-5 personal fouls that should have been called. Not to mention the should be fines and ejections (Ngata hitting Thomas on the head while he was on the ground, from behind, with a closed fist). Gerard Warren was tossed out of a game for taking a full swing at an o-lineman. Porter and Green were ejected from a game for pre-game fist-a-cuffs. Not Ngata though. The Ravens get away with way too many late hits. When the other team retaliates, they get the flag.

Crennel wants to win by playing football better then you. Not by thuggary. By being a close knit team that plays like a team and respect each other, thats a step in that direction. It seems like some coaches condone in house fighting. Heck, Ive seen it while playing Jr. High football. I know that every team has its scuffles, but I like seeing Crennel jumping in a mans face with pads and straitening him out. I dont want the Browns making headlines like Steve Smith or Romanowski mesing up his teammates vision and that player cant make the team.

I'm not condoning scuffles but I've been on a lot of teams and the occassional overheated shoving match with a swing or two, if controlled, can actually bring a team closer together...
