I really thought Wilson was 50/50 to make the team, but I guess the feeling was if he hasn't shown it by now, we're done waiting for it. I also thought Perry had a chance to make it due to being a DB.
No real "names" here, though.

Lennie Friedman? When did he get hurt?
I am really surprised about Orr. I thought he played pretty well in the preseason and was at least going to be retained to play special teams. I guess this means that Peek is ready to go and that Griffin's injury the other night wasn't serious.
Travis Wilson sealed his fate when he "lost it in the lights" on that dropped pass.

Surprises for now are G Bennett and CB Lawton making the roster and keeping 4 TEs...but I think we will still make 1 or 2 moves and I dont think Lawton will last long...he´s ust here for now because he is the 3rd KR on this team glad we kept both Rubin and Leonard and Steptoe over Wilson...though "the next Wilson" = Hubbard made the team because Phil doesnt want to look like a moron spending next years 5th for him...again over a much better Sanders, who I really feel sorry for for the PS I´d sign: S Key WR Sanders (if elegible) DL Purcell OT Lee WR Leggett RB Thomas (preferably someone better) LB Ortiz CB AJ Davis

Glad to see that we kept Harrison.
IMO he is way better than Wright.

Paul Hubbard making the roster over Sanders is very disappointing. I would have rather kept AJ Davis than Cousins also. Most of the cuts was pretty obvious.

I'm upset by that as well.
Does this mean that Friedman is done for the year?
Where the heck did that come from?

I think Sowels Sucks ! He was a revolving door against Chicago . Not impressed with Dinkins or Cousins either .. Orr & Hall where the two top LB's in preseason to me . Hope that kid James Lee makes the PS ..

No real surprises here. Bennett made the team because Friedman was hurt. He'll probably be OL 8 or so .... who will be inactive for most, if not all games.
Sanders vs Hubbard comes down to "which guy do we think will develop over the next year or 2?" vs. "which guy will help most this year?". Neither guy would see the field much this year as the 5th WR. Again, it's most likely that neither would even be active for most games.
I agre that they probably kept Lawson primarily because they see him as a valuable special teamer .... and a solid returner. (important with both Cribbs and Steptoe dinged)
I was surprised that they are going to carry both Rucker and Bell on the active roster though. IIRC, Rucker will be out for 4-6 weeks (at best?), and Bell was also going to be out for a while,. It wouldn't surprise me to see either guy moved to IR if an interesting player becomes available.
I wouldn't get too comfortable if I were in the bottom 4 or 5 guys on this team though. This part of the year frequently sees minor trades and teams bringing in other teams' cuts for a look.

Sowells is Big Ted jr lol I agree thats a total waste of a roster spot. The kid Bennet i really like. I think if u give him a year or two he can be a very good RG in this league.

That pretty much sums it up, but I'd extend that "4 or 5" to "8-10, depending on position".
Those spots are all about player potential & ability to contribute on special teams... and they can turn over in a heartbeat.

I disagree ndutyme, I figure Hall Made it over McMillen. He would have been the first to go. Not sure who Squeezed Orr out. but either way there should be another player in this equation to fully answer who made the team over Orr & McMillen.
I'm totally shocked that Hubbard made the 53 over T.Wilson & Sanders both. I figured him for a practice squad guy for sure.
The 3rd suprise I see is that the tackle Lee didn't make it. He really impress vs the Jets, but I admit, I didn't watch the oline 2nd n 3rd teamers after that game. ,

Cutting ORR could be that we are interested in R. Colvin LB he is a former patroit and is familiar w/ the defense.

I also curious who we have left at WR. Steptoe is injured along with JJ. Who's going to play in game one? I got a feeling we are going to see a veteran brought in, maybe Joe Horn.

No real surprises, although I did not think we would keep four TE's; I would have kept Sanders over Dinkins. Hubbard over Wilson is no surprise to me, Hubbard has the 'potential' over Wilson, since we have seen Wilson for three years and he has not broken through.
QB - Anderson, Quinn, Dorsey RB - Lewis, Wright, Harrison FB - Vickers, Ali TE - Winslow, Heiden, Rucker, Dinkins WR - Edwards, Stallworth, Cribbs, Steptoe, Hubbard OL - Thomas, Steinbach, Fraley, Hadnot, Shaffer, Tucker, McKinney, Sowells, Bennett (who I was glad to see make it, thought he performed well). PK - Dawson LS - Pontbriand P - Zastudil DL - Rogers, Williams, S.Smith, R.Smith, Rubin, Leonard LB - Wimbley, Jackson, Davis, Peek, McGhinest, Hall, Griffin, Bell, Williams CB - Wright, McDonald, Daniels, Cousins, Lawson S - Jones, Pool, Sorenson, Adams.
Think that's the full list.
Statistics are like a bikini; what they show is interesting, but what they hide is vital. Drive for show (1st round), Putt for dough (rest of draft).

Never mind the original post.
I'm surprised we are keeping 6 D-linemen.

This is the first time since '99 other than Brandon Rideu that I have thought we have cut some good players. Really surprised that Wilson and Orr got cut, I thought Orr played great in the preseason and really could have fit in for Peek with a pass rush.

I think Opie was trying to protect this years draft class .. Didn't feel like they would clear wavers and make it to the PS ????

Random thoughts - Not surprised that we cut Wilson but for Hubbard?? I guess a mistake 3 years out is an easier cut to make than a mistake from one year ago. Hopefully Sanders makes the PS. I'm liking the DB cuts though the o-line had a few surprises (in terms of who was kept). Stinks that Friedman got IR'ed, his versatility was a big help. Also...keeping 4 TE's? I guess Dinkins has some really strong special teams value.

I had a feeling Wilson would be the surprise cut...but it wasn't really a surprise.
He always seemed to juggle the ball when he caught it.
It's a shame too, I thought the light was coming on for him.

I got a feeling Rucker is going to be used as a slot reciever once he is healthy. He looked pretty good until he hurt himself. He and winslow are like hybrid players. They are TE's, but can be used as WRs when needed.

What a surprise... all our draft picks made the team. Personally I'd rather they have IR'd Bell and Rucker, waived Hubbard for the PS and kept Orr, Wilson, and McMillan (sp. teams).

I'm surprised by a few moves here.
A little surprised Wilson was cut. I think he showed just enough this year to make it, though he had shown NOTHING the previous years. I thought he should have been cut last year, but he made it. This year, I think he makes it, and he gets cut.... oh well.
Steptoe making strides in the return game probably pushed him out of Cleveland.
I'm also surprised that Orr was cut. He had signed him in the offseason, and he played decently. Could have been a depth./ST player.
I'm surprised that Lawson made it as well. I don't think he showed much defensively, and I can't see him making it for a back up returner if Steptoe is on the roster.
I'd rahter have kept Wislon and cut Dinkins. Don't need 4 TEs.

I think the staff must have seen some things on film and in practice that just made them believe that Wilson won't be able to get it done in real games. At least they know what they are getting in Dinkins.
I absolutely don't like our WR receiver mix because I'm not a particularly big fan of Cribbs playing receiver. I think we short changed ourselves in this department. Hubbard is a 'potential' guy. Too bad there's not a lot in front of him. He is going to see some playing time, and hopefully he produces.
I'm now a tad worried about this group. One playmaker, that's it. Please JJ, hurry back.

I'd rather have kept Wilson over Hubbard any day of the week.
Hubbard is a potential guy, like you said. A potential next year, not this year, guy. Wilson can do something this year to help. Hubbard dropped some easy balls. How that is going to potentially help us this year is my question.

Can we really say that? If he can't get any separation and drops balls, can he really help? His best game was in the most meaningless games of them all.
Look at our WR mix. Hubbard is going to get some PT. I suspect that if the staff thought Wilson was going to be better than Hubbard this year, they would have found a way to get them both on the squad - if they were afraid of losing Hubbbard.

I was thinking that Hubbard would make it over Sanders because Phil thought that Sanders has a better chance to clear waivors and remain with the team as a practice squad player. Especailly with him being a local kid, he is more likely to remain with the team over a PS offer from another team. If a team offered Sanders to the roster, he takes it.
Cincy and Pittsburgh are an injury away from needing a tall WR with track skills and Baltimore could use him right now. Pittsburgh keeps a close look at our roster, they signed Quincy Morgan as a 5th WR/kick returner, when he was a starter here. Im sure Ozzie is keeping a close look after Savage double dipped from Baltimore a few times.

Isn't Rucker out for another 3 or 4 weeks following surgery?
Plus ...... you have Winslow and Heiden also coming off surgery.
It would be foolish not to keep 4 TEs under those circumstances.

I don't see why people are surprised by Wilson getting cut. He never did anything here and looked only decent in the preseason. I specifically remember him dropping that important pass in game 4... So good riddance.
I'm surprised we kept 4 TEs.

As far as the WR cuts, i trust Wes Chandler, he should know what makes a good NFL receiver or not!
