The thing that gets me about many of the people who say that.. is that you will find other posts where they are screaming for Wimbley to be benched or McGinnest to be benched or for Hadnot to be replaced... so we are to trust that they know more about the QB spot, but not the other 21 spots.....

From the beginning, he was making it very clear that DA was the starter. Not that he's entering the offseason as the starter, but the starter for this team period. And he made sure his whole staff knew that .

Can there even be the possibility that there is a consensus rather than Phil domineering the entire staff demanding who will start when in actuality it should really be he HC's job.

Neither the HC nor Phil is on an island. They have meetings together and with the entire staff. I don't understand the thinking that for each and every instance there is one person behind the decision. HC on one issue; GM on another; someone else on yet another. Sure there are job descriptions which automatically give one or another person the last call, but I can't imagine Phil demanding who will or won't start and making sure his whole staff knows it.

I think that from the beginning he was making it very clear that DA was the starter because it was discussed and a consensus was arrived at that dealt with who will start and the manner in which they wish to proceed with the bringing along of Brady Quinn.

just clicking and a few words...

1. Toad "History has shown that a GM gets a mulligan if his hand-picked head coach fails. RAC is Savage's first coach."

Actually RAC was Randy and Collins choice...Savage just came on board first week and sat through the interview but others were interviewed prior to Savage joining. The choice was Randy and Collins with Savage's approval. I would call it more a "Breakfast Ball"

But I think he thoroughly likes working with RAC and will stick with him as long as possible. He knows his back is covered with RAC in there. Nobody is more loyal!

2. I think Frye has spoiled RAC and he will never relinquish to that....Well he plays better in the games theory which should apply to BQ compared with DA. DA practices great so its hard for him to change him...its like a sireen singing DA has him under that beautiful ball spell he throws in practice. He can't make the switch casue Frye sort of burned that Bridge.

3. Nothing disturbs me more than when a coach will call a time out and then we go out there on Defense and get called for 12 man on the field! Fire his butt! Oh wait that was Wade Phillips of the Cowboys...

I can nitpick any coach in the NFL and make them look dumb...the morning after

This team is in needs a new head coach, I was one of the many people that was clamering for Romeo's Head two years ago, Even last year with the Ten win season I thought we should have upgraded at head coach. The GM has to understand that we played a fourth place schedule last year. Romeo is a nice guy however he has made many bone-headed moves. He plays favorites with players and the coaching staff. As a head coach you should see the deficences of your staff. I would have gotten rid of Romeo when Maurice Carthon was calling plays for our Offense (Driving the Offense into the Ground) Maurice should have been fired during Mid Season. I believe that if Phil had not intervened at the end of the 06 season Maurice Carthon would still be calling plays for our Team. Make the Change NOW!!

Maurice Carthon was fired mid-season and was nowhere near the Browns at the end of the '06 season.

Nice post though.

"I believe that if Phil had not intervened at the end of the 06 season Maurice Carthon would still be calling plays for our Team."

Does it make you feel better by just making Crapola up?

Actually the real history (not the made up one) had a real mess brewing as the offense got splintered. Mo n the skilled positions vs Davidson and the OL - this just is not good at all.

Yes, Mo and RAC were friends as well as football coaches. So they sat and talked. Mo did not want to put RAC in a very bad situation as a rift of that nature could only reflect badly on the HC. He tendered his resignation...would he have been fired at the season's end? More than likely. Where you get that Savage intervened is beyond me?

Davidson then took over the Offense for the remainder of the season. And subsequently not hired as the OC in the off season.
Did Savage hand pick Chud? I don't know, he's the GM and I would have been disappointed if he didn't have a short n long list ready for interviews.

Did Savage and RAC jointly discussed and reviewed the interview process....you better believe it.

To insinuate that everything good that happens to this team revolves around Savage and everything bad revolves around RAC spells out to me bias of the worst proportions.

But its ok to have a difference of opinion. But to make your opinion look better - don't make stuff up

I thought Carthon quit during the bye week? Which opened the doors for o-line coach Daniels who had to use Carthons playbook. Carthon had no clue whats-so-ever on how to call the o-lines blocking schemes from play to play. Daniels and Garcia would both argue Carthons o-lines blocking schemes.

Technically he did resign. So did Butch Davis. I'm not so sure that he didn't have an either/or option regarding that. But I've no way to know for sure.

You're right though, he did resign.

We might. Pointlessly prepared for any shock , the posters on this board are adjusting daily to non-events disappointments, hard choices, and more whether it is real or not. Maybe we don't need it, but we seem to WANT it badly, and we have some reasons to do so. We might be well served to look elsewhere; at this point we have seen what RAC has. When is the best time to start savings or to lance a boil?

I know that we had a great game last week against the Giants on Monday Night, "Every Dawg has his Day". But last week was awful I cannot believe that DA only had 17 Total Yards of passing in the first Half. Romeo needed to change the quaterback at half-time. We need to see what Brady can do. We are only 1 Game Back in the Wild Card Chase I do not want to see this season over so soon. Our clock management is awful it would be nice if we had a quaterback that could manage the game without a call from the Bench. As we all know they are SLEEPING! Why can't we go to a no huddle at the end of Halfs?

Cowher, may it please the court, or someone who is Cowheresque. Marvy Lewis may well be available, but no thanks. We need somebody willing to beat them up and drill some wells to strike fresh water. Not sure we have that on staff; if we do, then RAC is not letting em out to play too often. Seems he has about half to one and a half game plans, and it wins or it won't. If he played every one more wide open like the Giants, then I think he would win more. Won't fix clock wrangling, kneel downs, horrible sideline struggles we have seen, but at least you will look like a team who adjusts.

God I hope so, I am tired of seeing that fat guy with the lost look in his eyes mismanaging the clock and making boneheaded decisions.

As much as I was one RAC's case early this season...hes improved...hes going for it more...and even getting after players.

Could it be that something is finally clicking in RAC?

Not saying I think hes the "the HC" to take us where we wanna go...but hes done better lately....atleast wait for the season to play itself out before actually wishing him gone.

I was calling for his head....winning has tempered my feelings for now. He hasn't been tested in end game clock management the last few weeks, though.

My biggest gripe with RAC is his over the top loyalty...its something that will get him fired if he doesnt change that mentality. You cant always have your pet players and buddy coaches.

I think maybe the "play to win" thing might be clicking a bit...rather than his "play not to loose' thing.

I dont think DA should be playing...but...IMO...its not RAC's decision...its Phil's.

I will gladly be proven wrong about RAC...and I hope that he grows into a good HC as the season progresses...most good coaches at some point have to learn to change and adapt...maybe RAC will and then again he might not.

I don't like calling for someone's job. I have an interest in who coachs the Browns but in the end as long as they're winning the coach himself isn't the biggest worry, to me.

Having said that, even if Romeo wins out this year I think he'll still be shy of a .500 record. Will that be good enough to keep him his job? I actually think the next 2 games might tell us that.

The Ravens are certainly beatable at home. And Denver's Defense has a number of guys on it that are still saying to themselves "Really? You mean I'm a starter?" At home we should be able to roll up the score on the Broncos.

The Brownies win those 2 games, especially if they look good doing it, and Romeo is locked in for next year. Look bad, especially in the Denver game which is a quasi-National TV game, and he may never recover.

It should be an exciting time. Let's hope it is.

I don't like that Quinn has not been baptized yet,...but I believe there are definitely other forces and decisions at work. Currently, DA is getting the job done, albeit inconsistently. Same goes for RAC. Gotta wait it out. It does appear something has changed. Just got to keep it going. Nothing would be better than not having to discuss who the next coach is going be.

So his future is tied to the next two games, eh?

No way.

So much can happen after the next two games......

Like he could take the crap he was handed and win with'em the first year.

I don't care for RAC as our coach, but his winning percentage has ZERO bearing when it comes to evaluating him.

Im concerned because of his in game coaching(which has improved), his clock managment...and how the teams hes had cant seem to come out of the gate playing good.

Its like this team always has to hit rock bottom...where its a do or die to play well...which is a bit disturbing.

I cant stand how loyal RAC is...even when the good of the team is on the line...he puts his pets and buddies on a higher plane. He's probably a great friend to have...but this is HCing in the NFL. We cant afford that crap.

He's to slow to make decision on players...and often has waited to long to pull players or coaches...which goes back to his loyalty issue and his in game coaching issues.

I think how the rest of the season goes will determine RAC's future...if we finish with a winning record he stays...if we have a losing record...depending on how that happened...he might be gone.

Unfortunatley for RAC...some of his future rests on DA's shoulders, which may or not be the QB he wants out there...yikes!

Ok, I should have quantified it by saying his winning percentage over his first two years has ZERO bearing when it comes to evaluating him.

Now stuff that in your ukulele and strum it

Concurrently, while your thought is pertinent, it's also somewhat irrelevent.

Marty was canned despite a 14-2 record. I'm not here to say whether it was right or wrong, but that isn't relevent to the point.

Wade Phillips has a winning record in Dallas, yet his job is very much in jeopardy.

Those are just two examples.

Now, regarding Crennel continuing as the head coach, unless we totally fall apart in the 2nd half, he's most likely going to get one more year to advance. While everyone must accept a playoff run as the goal, realistic expectations for the team this year were somewhere around .500. Well, we're 3-4 despite some serious problems both on the field as well as off. Crennel has earned some legit criticism because of some really boneheaded moves, but that won't be enough to earn das boot.

No.

It's clicking the same as it always has. But we have won 3 out of the last 4 and as is being proven, winning cures everything. This is a perfect example of why it might not be in ones best interest to start tossing people under the bus just because things aren't going well like it was at that beginning of this season.

RAC has been coaching for 30 years. It certainly has not been the past several weeks that "something is finally clicking".

Good Lord, has it ever occurred to you that just because you write it down doesn't make it fact?

One thing I am getting tired of reading is how Romeo has a free lifetime pass because he took over a bad team. He gets a certain amount of sympathy but that has pretty much worn out. I cannot believe that he won't get the heave-ho at the end of year if we get there with a losing record and we look bad doing it.

We've got a chance to put some wins on the board in the next week against 2 good but beatable teams. If we don't and that starts us on a downhill slide I seriously doubt Romeo is prowling our sidelines next year. And I'm surprised you would think he'll make it under those circumstances.

Having said that, I'll say this, I don't expect us to lose the next two games. I expect us to win them. So any speculation about Romeo on the hotseat would probably be moot. But as the last 2 weeks have proven, anything can happen in Cleveland so never say never.

Short-sighted thinking my friend. He's only been a HC for a shade over 3 years. While having an extensive history in "coaching" helps, it certainly doesn't qualify him for the job. A guy that I work with just retired after 29 years with the company. Maybe we should have just made him CEO ... after all, he has 29 years experience.

I mean, come on ddub, I absolutely know for a fact that you are smarter than that. With every new job - even in the same field - you aren't just good right away. And sometimes you'll never be good. It's called getting promoted past your competencies and it happens in business all over the place.

I'm not saying that's what has happened to RAC. But I personally know what side I'm leaning on with him and it's because the bad has outweighed the good. I thought he's done a fine job the last two games, and I've stated as such ... but that doesn't erase the past mistakes which on a seesaw would still have the bad side firmly planted on the ground. He's got a hole he needs to dig out of, IMO. Maybe he will.

It would be great for the franchise if he does.

Part of the point I was making. You just aren't good right away and will have your issues. So, is [that] the time to start calling for a guy's head or should just about anyone get some time to grasp the promotion?

But that doesn't mean "he's finally getting it" which is what I was responding to.

When you think of all the variables that affect all the possibilites in any given game it's a wonder, without extended continuity, that something doesn't jump out and screw up every game, which is something that does happen to a young team. HC has the team prepared, first drive a ball bounces off a WR's hands and goes for a pick six, players get a little more determined and in their next drive there's a fumble and the opposition turns it into a TD. Everything started out great, team was ready to play. Made a couple of mistakes and find themselves in a 2-TD hole. The young players start to press. They drop passes. Miss blocks and the game gets out of hand. Damn coach; right?

RAC has made some mistakes. Some of them have been very quizzical indeed. But he's not out there blowing games. As Sam Ritigliano says, "You never saw a jocky carry the horse over the finish line."

A team needs some coninuity to settle in. They need wins to build confidence. They need confidence to compete every Sunday. It doesn't happen overnight. When it does it's the exception to the rule and even then it doesn't last.

This season started out bad with injuries and missed practice time so they lose their first 3 games. Then they come around and have won 3 of the last 4. In my eyes there's nothing about the HC "finally getting it" that accounts for it.

While I think it's incredibly short-sighted to suggest RAC's future hinges on these next two games, I also think it's past the time where we can say RAC still gets time to figure out how to do his job. He had that out during his first year, but has made multiple mistakes since, some even as recently as a couple of games ago.

As things stand right now, excuse-time is over for everyone:

Anderson has his O-line in good shape and has had a month to work with all his weapons.

Edwards has GOT to get into the flow of the game, regardless if he gets catches on the first drive or not.

And RAC no longer has the excuse that he's learning on the job and is afforded mistakes. I believe that he should have had it LONG before now, so I don't believe he'll ever get it.

I don't think RAC has to make the playoffs to save his job, but he can't let this team slide to a very bad finish. In short, it's time for RAC to look and feel like an NFL head coach, which includes taking control of this team as well as making good gameday decisions.

No where did I say that his future hinged on the next two games. I said we can gauge what may happen by the next two games. Big difference.

I don't think RAC has to make the playoffs to save his job, but he can't let this team slide to a very bad finish. Gosh, that sounds familiar......

As I said before, the next week will be very interesting.

"One thing I am getting tired of reading is how Romeo has a free lifetime pass because he took over a bad team."

You just wrote something about - just writing something doesn't make it fact...then you follow it up with this.

"Lifetime Pass" - I believe the poster in question OT...stated he got a 2 year pass as in the first two where we tore down the team...then started the building process.

"I cannot believe that he won't get the heave-ho at the end of year if we get there with a losing record and we look bad doing it."

we're 3-4 right now and we haven't looked bad doing it? Don't get me wrong...we did look bad (Dallas game specifically) but we were up against a stacked deck with the injury bug.

The only "LOOKING BAD" in your scenario that would get RAC fired is if he totally lost the team.

Week in and week out - he seems to be holding this team together and actually is why he is not only an NFL HC...but a very good NFL HC. Time and again when everyone has abandoned us...he has been able to lift this team up by the scruff of its neck and get them playing football again.

The only thing...and basically it is the only thing that I think can get him fired...which as I mentioned was losing the team but the best way to do that is if we get another string of 22-40 rated games with losses from our "Best chance to Win QB" - RAC is riding that horse and it just might cost him his job.

I truly hope not.

I agree with your take Eotab on the entire situation as it regards RAC.

I also agree with the best QB to help us win now. It could in fact be his undoing, as you say!
RAC has a choice between starting BQ and starting DA. He I assume has brought all of his 30 plus years of experience into play in making his choice, along with the input of his GM and his OC. They all have a voice in that choice and they all are heard by RAC. Of that I am 100% certain.

With that said and because I can't even begin to approach RAC in terms of knowledge, in terms of attendence at practice. In terms of interacting with the 2 players in question. My bet is that based on all of the above DA does in fact offer the Browns the best chance to win. Now before I'm attacked for my opinion, that is why I can continue to support RAC in this choice, period. It has no bearing on him staying or going for me at least.

To me there is only one way RAC loses his job and that is if he loses the team. As long as I see effort, I will continue to support RAC, and my Browns to the bitter end.

Toad is hardly the only one who invokes the "RAC inherited such a bad team" mantra. We hear it every time that someone has the audacity to criticize our HC. My point was (and it was backed up later by the Toadster himself) that the time for excuses is done/over. It's put up or shut up time.

I don't expect RAC to go anywhere. But I'll say it again, if we end up with a losing record and look bad doing it all bets are off. And I think that the next 2 games will give us a very good glimpse of the future. I don't see how anyone could argue with that.

But I'll bet someone will tell me.......

If we lose tomorrow...it will be because of DA....if he plays well...we will win. So if we lose...we are done as far as p-offs go...also Quinn will most likely start against Denver. If he doesnt...then RAC and Phil are morons.

I would agree that the next 2 games are big...but even if we lose both...and then Quinn comes in, and we play well and win at the end of the season...RAC will be back, like it or not. Really RAC's future depends alot on the DA/Quinn situation...if we can get decent QB play..we should win 8+ games...but if we continue to get the same old DA...we wont win 7 games.

The thing we dont know is whether or not RAC is fully on board with DA playing...cuz if Phil wants DA to play...he'll play, even if RAC isnt sold. Obviously RAC is heavily involved...but the Buck stops at Phil...and hes pulling the strings. People can claim RAC is the same as he was 10 years ago...hes not...hes showin more fire on the sidelines...and has listened to his critics a bit more...and went for it over the last 3 games.

RAC has a ways to go before hes a legit HC...right now...I dont think hes not a great HC. I would also say that there might not be a better option this offseason...cowher may not be intrested. I'm not in favor of just firing RAC for a guy like Brian Billick.

Hopefully RAC learns some lessons real quick and the QB situation works out and we have a good second half of the season!

Well, after yesterday my knee jerk reaction was to "blow it all up" and get someone in here who can light a fire with these under performing players. I look at this roster and think they should be competitive. They should be winning more games. Why aren't they?? It just adds more question marks when one looks at a crappy Atlanta team playing well, Baltimore getting wins. Even Miami playing competitive. All first year coaches and systems......

I think it is time to try something different. When what you are doing isn't working, then change it. I think RAC might be of the mind set that DA gives him the best chance to win- winning is job security. Well, at this point the change i want to see is at QB. If it works -great, if it doesn't work it actually gives RAC an excuse.

If this team continues to play as it is- underperforming- reguardless of the QB- then a change at the top needs to be strongly concidered. Especially if Cowher would come to Cleveland.

To show a few examples from this year of why that does not hold up:

Mike Smith (Atl) inherited a bad team this season.

Tony Sparano inherited what some thought was one of the worst teams in the history of the NFL.

Both of those teams are in the thick of the playoff race this season. Both of those men are first time HC's (in the NFL).

The NFL is about results...not excuses.

(I'd use the same line with Harbaugh this year, but he inherited a lot of talent on defense)

He played well enough to win, but the defense caved like a house of cards.

You were wrong.

We're still alive for the playoffs, and I bet Anderson is the starter.

That's as it should be.

With our playoff hopes on life support, do you honestly think Crennel wants to march out a guy that's never started an NFL game?

He knows Anderson played well enough to win. It was the defense that screwed the pooch. He won't advocate benching his QB when it wasn't the QB's fault as to why we lost.

Linehan of the Rams tried that stOOpid move. It cost him his job when it failed.

And sticking with Anderson could also cost rac his job too. There are two certain things in the NFL:

1. Defense wins championships
2. The coach and QB get all the credit for wins and all the blame for the losses too.

rac and da will have to answer to losing two home divisional games (with a possible 3rd coming in Dec - Cincy could beat us to make it 0-3). And it's not too crazy for us to be 1-5 against the division at the end of this year. When you have the talent but not results...the coach gets fired. da will probably keep his job with the Browns through next season but may not be the starter (see Rex Grossman).

rac is on his way out. Losing a divisional game at home where we had a 24-13 lead in the 2nd half when out season was all but on the line.........rac has to answer to that.

3 of 14 (21%) for 21 yards in the final SIX drives... one bad drop by BE... sorry, DA needs to play for 60 minutes just like everybody else.

Hey, Shanahan took a probable playoff Bronco team and realized it wasn't going to win the Superbowl with Plummer, so he inserted Cutler and let him take his lumps to get valuable learning experience.

Do you really think we are going to make the playoffs this year, let alone win the Superbowl? If not, then why not see what Quinn has to offer.

Also, I firmly believe these final few weeks are the death march for Crennel. I believe the best mark for the quality of a coach is his record inside his division. Those are the teams that you see most often, gameplan for the most in the offseason and even build your teams to beat.

Romeo vs. AFC North
2005 1-5 (only win being week17 against Baltimore)
2006 0-6
2007 3-3 (Ravens twice, Bengals once)
2008 1-3 (Bengals)

So, RC is 5-17 vs. AFC North. Heck, RC is under .500 against each team in the AFC North (2-5 vs. Cincy, 3-5 vs. Balt, 0-7 vs. Pitt).

Sorry, but to win in the NFL you have to consistently win in your division, which is something RC has proven he will not do.

Ya know Punch, there's an interesting twist to that.

Savage and RAC believe Anderson gives them the best chance to win. That's obvious. RAC would be an idiot if he tried to salvage the season by inserting Quinn.

BUT, what happens if we lose one more game? That'd be a reasonable excuse to get Quinn into the game, since the season would be over. If Quinn rolls over and lays a complete egg, would that become an excuse for RAC to keep his job?

That's an interesting question..........
