I've been in support of Derek Anderson ever since he caught fire early last year. After the Washington game, I've finally changed my mind. He is not consistent enough. I still think he is a fairly decent QB but we are likely out of the playoffs this year, being 2-4 at this point in the season. I think we need to start Brady Quinn to really find out what we have in the guy. So far all we can do is speculate. Let's find out if he is really the QB to lead this team in the future. We don't have a realistic shot at the playoffs, so let's start him this Sunday at Jacksonville!

I understand it. I just can't figure out why the hell PROFESSIONALS are making these stoopid mistakes.
Is it a refusal to run the right routes or is it mental lapse? If it's mental, how can you be that dumb when the 2nd year in a system it should be habit????
Because these guys were born and bred as football players, they have been assisted through any trouble to be sure they were there to play football, they don't have respect for the rest of society, they think they are superheroes, and therefore exempt from the same standards the rest of us are held to.
The simple standard of, you have a job, you get paid for said job, if you don't do that job you get fired and we find someone else to do your job.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

I know "you" aren't wanting to factor DA into the equasion here. And that's fine if you so choose not to do so.
I do so because you can look at each player seperately.. And I'm focusing in more on Ewards and KW because it's warranted.. They , especially Edwards are dropping too many balls..
when DA has a great game like last week, BE elevated his game as well. When DA stunk up the joint this week, BE's game looked sub par as well. I could see if every pass was going behind/high/low out in the parking lotand he was making a hue effort to corral them all.. But he's butterfingering the EASY ones.. He's also not running precision routes..and not making sight adjustments..thats something you do regardless of the QB..
As a player you get paid to do whatever your skill requires...or you don't play. He needs to stop the excuses...I will not back a player who says he isn't concentrating because he isn't getting thrown too..thats so full of it it smacks of ME-ME..HE HAS TO ALWAYS BE READY.. U think a corner says " I got burned because they weren't throwing to my side at all so I lost concentration"? Thats being LAZY...
Now when we speak about how DA factors in ..what else is there to say? But what I'm saying is, bringing in Quinn when we have a staph infection rampant in the receivers hands isn't changing things.. The drops will continue UNTIL these guys look at themselves and admit they are part of the problem..

On one hand I agree that dropping the ball is not the QB's fault, but I've seen situations where changing QBs just seemed to ingnite an offense - concentration goes up, guys perform better, etc. That's the spark that's often talked about. Maybe a new QB in the huddle just changes the dynamic enough that confidence grows. It's hard to explain, but isn't it worth a shot before the season is totally gone?

Game Nine is when it happens,...after Derek starts Game Nine, Quinn can no longer achieve the bonus money in his contract for starting 8 games this year. It obviously has to be a money issue; the performance issue is over.

Would it have made a difference if he had read the blitz and ran the hot route on that crucial drive?
Probably.
Quote:
Would it have made a difference if he had run the right route on the last pass attempt,
I'm not sure what his route was supposed to be but assuming it was a crossing route, then no it wouldn't have. If he was supposed to stop and come back 3 yards it might have made a difference, otherwise the ball was going to bounce at his feet.
Coach, you continue to bring up the same few plays where BE screwed up in the Redskins game... and your point is taken, yes, had BE run the hot route and then run the correct route on the final drive, yea, it might have a made a difference. So give me an example of how BE screwed up the first 50 minutes of the game? Is BE the reason DA had 17 yards passing at halftime for the second time in 3 weeks? Is BE the reason DA's completion percentage at halftime was 21% when most of his attempts were to running backs?
And as far as holding RAC to an artificially high standard, if our players, who are in their 3rd and 4th year don't know the playbook then who should I hold responsible? I can hold the players responsible but when KWII doesn't know where the line up, BE doesn't know which routes to run, Vickers doesn't know where to line up, we are near the top of the NFL in penalties, our presnap penalties are a joke... so who is responsible? I have no choice but to believe that our players, across the board, are dumber than most players in the NFL ... or they aren't being properly coached... I doubt its the first one because we get our players from the same college programs as everybody else , most of the guys on offense are in their 3rd or 4th year here and Stallworth is the only real "new guy" to the system and I doubt blind luck is the reason so many of our players don't know their assignments...
Quote:
I don't know if it's funny or ironic that you hold DA and RAC to such lofty standards and look to excuse BE and even go so far as to blame DA for BE's performance.
I don't hold DA to any standards higher than anybody else. You are either helping this team execute and win games or you are not. Right now, DA is not and BE has been about equally ineffective.. if I thought making Steptoe the #1 would help the WR position I'd call for it but right now I believe an inconsistent BE is better than anything else we have.. I can't say I believe that for the QB spot.
Quote:
Why is BE different than DA?
Because he doesn't have a highly touted first round draft pick behind him... sorry, it's pretty much that simple. I don't call for somebody to get yanked just for fun or because they had one bad half, I do so based on my own opinion as to whether the replacement has a chance to make us better. Yes I understand the coaches see them everyday and blahblahblah.. I respect the coaches and will root for whoever they put on the field but it's tough to watch a team struggle week in/week out and watch a coach who apparently has the philosophy that just "waiting" is going to fix everything....
If you want an analogy, it's like Iraq, we need a surge. We need to stop the bleeding and go on the offensive... and we're not. We're sticking with all the same personnel and all the same strategies that, at best, have proven to be effective only sporadically.

Chud is responsible for a lot of whats going on..his plays are called..he calls the personnel in.. Tell me why in this game we were so ultra conservative early on? The OC started out by trying to get DA to get into a rthym by throwing to the backs early instead of trying to stretch the Redskins D early..
When guys aren't lined up, that falls on the coordinator..then your HC has to check the OC on this...thats how it should work.

Agreed. Even if BE is as culpable as DA is, we don't have an adequate substitute for him. In Quinn, we have a first rounder with high expectations that's not been tried.

Because that is how we start every game... try to get DA some success, try to get him some completions, try to get his confidence up... I swear sometimes I think he's 14 years old.
The reason we were conservative is because we couldn't get a first down. In order to start opening things up you have to get the defense thinking and reacting so you can exploit it... We did NOTHING to force them out of their gameplan and their base defense...
And yes, Chud needs to take some responsibility and usually when I speak of RAC, I'm really speaking of the coaching staff as a whole, of which he is the head.

That is mine my line of thinking as well.. if one player is routinely lined up wrong or jumping off sides then it's on the player, when it's a bunch of players and happens repeatedly, then its on the OC, if it doesn't get fixed then it moves up to the HC...

We didn't start so conservative against the Giants. We came out going to the slants and stretching the field. Why the opposite approach against a defense that is banged up? I'll tell you why..road game..don't want mistakes..turtle approach.. 3 series..3 outs. Can't have that tight of a gameplan..you have to come out and scheme to your strength, which is go downfield.

CoachB...TE, WRs sorry these guys are part of the game but they don't lose nor win the games. Bad play by the WRs does not dictate to the QB. The QB must lead and dictate to the WR. I saw the drops mount after we dug ourselves a hole of ineptitude. This is brought on by that old saying....HE IS ABLE TO MAKE THOSE AROUND HIM BETTER!... It is not Strong wow arm that is key. It is the ability to make those around him better. DA has 0 "IT" factor. As for RAC...
Unfortunately RAC is tying his pony up to DA. He's seen Dr. Jekyll and all his football wisdom tells him that Dr. Jekyll can be a great QB in this NFL...its the Mr. Hyde that he just doesn't believe exists. Rarely does Mr. Hyde makes an appearance in practices...so its like, Man how do we bench this kid, look how great he is throwing. A coach like RAC with all his wisdom has one thing weighing his decision down.
You play how you practice. In DA's case I only wish that was the case. Each week you put in a game plan and practice its execution.
We all saw our game plan. During the week DA probably executed it flawlessly. Then comes the game.
I'm afraid to say, cause I'm a big RAC fan. He is riding this Pony and will end his coaching career with that ill fated decision. The words..."He gives us the best chance to win" cannot be taken seriously. Not when we have a game with a game plan of High Percentage passes...and they are all there with good YAC to be had. Then we hit 17% in the part of the game that we own field position. Till we throw away a good defensive effort and come up with a 14-3 deficit.
This is the best chance to win? Is this because BQ is THAT BAD? No cause it is because DA is that good...IN PRACTICE!!!
I'm sorry I don't want a practice player out there leading our team to defeats. We could realistically be 5-1 if we truly had the best QB out there to win. Steelers, Ravens and now Redskins...If BQ is not the one then we must get somebody else...heck Sage Rosenthal anyone who can be accurate on a consistent basis.
What I do know. DA will have bring that great game to the field once in a blue moon to vindicate all those who believe in him. Only to break their hearts - sorry but I had mine broken for the last time. Season done at 2-4? Yep, a definite YEP if DA is our QB cause we need a string of wins to get back in this. One thing DA has shown us. Playing good game after game is not in his repertoire.
Sorry RAC - Its a shame it has to end. JMHO

Being paid for your profession is not the same as being professional.
Maturity, work ethic, integrity, devotion, focus, determination, attitude.
After seeing how our guys got weak when the Skins hit em in the chops a bit... personally, I think our guys are just soft with attitudes.
Browns is the Browns

Firstly, on another thread where we discussed this, I stated that I do not hold BE blameless. And I stated that IF he were to perform poorly with an "accurate QB", he too should be benched. And that each player is accountable for their own job and position. I can quote that for you if you'd like?
Secondly, if you look in any of the current "fire RAC threads", you won't see my being party to any tirades looking for his head. I saw improvement in the way he handled things in pre-season. I believe there is a "plan" to this QB situation.
Do I believe RAC is "perfect"? Not by any means. But I have seen improvement in some areas and I'm not on the "fire RAC train"..............................now or yet...............
Yet another "stretch" in your comment IMO, is the lofty goals part of your response.
I don't really hold DA to any "lofty goals". He's a second year starter. All I have and am really looking for, is a little more consistancy. Average QB play. There are many young QB's in the NFL right now. From rookies to three year starters, there a lot of young starters.
If DA could only show some consistancy relative to accuracy, I could see some progress in DA. But as it is, he's been very irratic on a fairly steady basis.
If DA Were ranked as an average NFL QB who had decsent accuracy, we ALL would be seeing a young QB maturing. And I'm sure we all wanted to see that progress.
But we are not. If seeing DA progress from the end of last year is what you consider "lofty goals", then I guess that's what I am looking for.
But just to ask to see progress in the maturation process I believe to be realistic expectations, not "lofty goals"
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Now here it comes..in DA you aren't going to get any consistancy for any long period of time. Last year proved it, this year is just showing he doesn't have the ability to be that. He is what he is..streaky player who is best at going downfield..BUT LITTLE else.

I do note that according to this article: Article DA says that the problem was not wrong routes.. (at least by Winslow) "Ever get writer's block?" Anderson said when asked about the inconsistency. "Can't explain it. We're out there fighting our tails off, trying to do everything we can to get on track. It takes all 11 guys to make a play work." Two guys expected to make plays -- Winslow and Edwards -- did not. Winslow played a lot despite missing two weeks of practice with an illness which after the game he revealed was a staph infection. He did not make his first catch until the fifth ball thrown to him with 4:40 left in the game. He caught two passes out of eight thrown him. Winslow also was penalized once for offensive pass interference. "It wasn't like he was running wrong routes," Anderson said. "We just didn't connect. They beat him up pretty good. At the end of the game, guys were just holding on to his shoulder pads, pretty much."Edwards had four catches for 58 yards and four drops. *** The way that reads it appears DA is discussing KW.. whether or not he is referring to BE is another question.

Not really, we just had a slant that BE broke for a long gain.. we weren't throwing the ball vertically much until we had picked up a few first downs... most of the passes were still short passes..
Two differences, one is that our short passes were connecting which caused them to respect them and tighten up... the other is that we were constantly in 1st and 15 and 2nd and 13 situations because of the penalties.. I said it jokingly once before, but maybe that's what we need to do, set ourselves back so we feel the need to make plays...
At the time, I told my buddy who is a Redskin fan that I was happy when they finally scored and he said, why?... I told him that I hoped it would get the Browns offense a little sense of urgency and let them loosen up and start to play.. and it sort of did.

I don't believe he would willingly mislead us either. Quote:

He may not throw anyone under the bus. But are you trying to indicate he would simply say this to make an underachiever "look better" by making false statements that aren't necassary?
I believe there is a large difference between the two....

If I'm DA and I really believe my #1 WR is running wrong routes, I'm going to say something like. "We just can't seem to connect, sometimes it's my fault, sometimes it's his fault, sometimes it's just good defense, but we need to work on it and get past it." ... at least that is how I would phrase it... If BE really is being called out by the coaches for running wrong routes, then he would already know that and shouldn't have a word to say...

web page Every Monday, SI.com's Ross Tucker will hand out letter grades to deserving NFL parties... Grade: D+ Braylon Edwards, Cleveland Browns WR. Edwards escaped a failing grade by making a couple of big plays in the second half of the Browns' loss to the Redskins, but it was not nearly enough for a guy who is clearly Cleveland's best offensive weapon yet is maddeningly inconsistent. The plus is because Edwards acknowledged his critical mistakes, which shows the accountability I like in an elite player in this league. But verbal acknowledgement only goes so far in a production-oriented business like professional football. Edwards dropped at least four catchable balls, including a couple thrown right on the money when he was wide open. Just as importantly, Edwards missed a hot read late in the game in which he was supposed to break off his route short after the Redskins came with an all-out blitz. That was a missed opportunity. The Browns are having a tough enough time handling the ups and downs of the streaky Derek Anderson at quarterback. Having your best offensive player like Edwards fail to help him out on a consistent basis makes it all the more difficult.
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***

The problem is,,.....
ANderson has had PLENTY of time to sit in the pocket over the last 4 weeks...The OL is playing solid again...THE DUDE CAN'T HIT THE BROAD FRICKEN SIDE OF ANYTHING...
U can pick out one play here and one there...The name of the game as a QB in the NFL is ACCURACY...And he ain't got it...PERIOD...
I don't give a damn what VERS or anyone else says...When you're throwin' at a 52% clip you're never goin' anywhere in this league...And that's exactly what we've got goin' on right now...BEYOND EDWARDS...
Anderson cost us the Baltimore and Washington games...THE ENTIRE OFFENSE cost us the Pitt and Dallas games...

I think he was covering for one of his guys. The "underahiever" you are talking about was not an underachiever last season. Besides, DA was in no position to point a finger or to do anything other than cover for his teammates if he expects the same from them and believe you me he needs it.
By that time he'd surely already heard the "running the wrong routes" talk and so he addressed that. If this team starts pointing fingers or starts the "I don't know, go ask him" kind of talk there's going to be some real trouble in the locker room.

My view is this..... If we're having trouble separating where the problem is between the two; bench them BOTH.
Put Quinn in and promote from within at WR. Send a wake-up call, loud and clear.

BE's 4 drops...I'm just curious, I can remember two that I don't think have any credence.
1. was a 3rd and 8 and he dropped a 3 yard pass and was pretty much surrounded by defenders. NO WAY we had a first but DA would have had a completion.
2. I remember an eight yard down and in...he started on the left side and #22 actually from behind got inside and put his hand in there to knock the ball away...actually this shouldn't have been classed a drop.
3. I think was a similar pass to where Cribbs got Rocked and BE was in a similar vulnerable situation and did chicken out on the ball.
4. I can't think of??? Surely not the last pass where he dove and got a hand on the ball. I know there was another pass where he had to circus his body to get a hand on it.
I was in a stunned effect for most of the game - so usually I can picture every play step for step but so much of this game I just didn't bother to register. Oh NO I hope it ain't old age creeping up on me
JMH? What were the 4 BE drops...#1 above is the only one I'm 100% sure on the list.

You have a much better recall than I do, but...I counted 5 drops by BE. No, I cannot say exactly when they were, my bad, Maybe it was only 4, according to the NFL. But, BE drops passes, and he admitted as much.
Now, if you want to blow off my count because I can't tell you precisely what down it was, and what the time on the clock was, fine. I understand that.

I watched the game at my buds so I didn't get the chance to review it. My recollection was 4 drops, but it may have been 5. I can't recall the situation for each one.
On a side note, I know that there have been arguements that suggest on 3rd and long that a 4 yard dropped pass is meaningless. I say it isn't, because as Edwards admitted, he dropped the ball because his head wasn't in the game. Because his head wasn't in the game, he failed to read a blitz pickup. Who knows what else he did wrong during the game because he essentially quit on the team during the game. Then there's the confidence factor on Anderson's behalf. We all know he needs help from his receivers. If he doesn't have any confidence that Edwards will catch the ball, it'd be tough to argue that such a thing wouldn't creep into a QB's head.
Again, Edwards isn't the only problem. To me, he's equally to blame for the struggles of Anderson this year. It seems a strange cooincidence to me that Anderson and Edwards BOTH played their best games of the year and had success. Seems to me that one doesn't succeed without the help of the other.......

So replace Anderson with someone who doesn't rely on other players to make him better and makes those better around him like we see so many great QBs in this league do.,
I'm not saying that's Brady, we certainly know it's not Anderson. What emotionally soft QBs do you know of who have won Super Bowls?

Thank, Bif. You expressed what I think many deep-down believe, which is that there's an abundance of QB's who can make the offense better by themselves.
And by saying thanks I mean it in an honest way, not in my typical snarkey way
If you really stop to think about it, how many of those types of QB's are actually out there? I don't think that there's anyone who'd say Carson Palmer has been an overrated QB during his time in the league. Setting aside his current blown-out elbow, he was a pro-bowl performer, and immeasurably better than most QB's out there. Yet watch his O-line get old and fail, and his receivers become head-cases, and suddenly Palmer is "just another guy." His team started to disintegrate last year, and his rating, which had been 101 and 94 the previous years, dropped to 86, and his INT's went up to an uncharacteristic 20. This year, when the entire offense has gone to Hell, his rating had been a 69. (Maybe that's Karma for his comments about Ohio State )
Take a look at what happened to Brett Favre the year after Ted Thompson blew up his offensive line and let Javon Walker go. For a couple of years there, Favre was a headcase and a stiff, putting out ratings in the low 70's. Then they rebuilt his line, his young receivers like Jennings developed, and Favre became prominent again.
This year, Payton Manning and Harrison had been on the mend and haven't gotten synced up. Combine that with iffy offensive line play due to inexperience and injuries, and you have a Manning who's 80 rating is his lowest since his rookie year of '98.
I just named three pro-bowl caliber QB's who are supposed to be able to carry a team with their passing. Yet throw a kink into their offensive line or receivers and suddenly, they can't carry a team anymore.
I can think of more QB's who've earned trips to the pro-bowl that are active in the league who've had the same problem, and as we know, Anderson isn't a pro-bowl QB, regardless of whether or not he backed into it last year or not.

You mean besides Trent Dilfer? No, I get your point, but you can't fairly call Anderson mentally soft. In fact, I think he showed me something last year that I didn't think he had when we cut Frye. He knew Brady was the golden boy, but that didn't stop him from going crazy. Now his talent can rightfully be brought into question, but we haven't seen him melt down, point the finger at his teammates, or freak out in the media. To this point, we can question many things about him, but I don't believe his mental toughness, at least not yet.

This is something that I've never thought about. One thing Anderson has felt is a lot of criticism. Very good point Toad.
But in my eyes, Anderson has looked awful with this team, and i would like to see what Brady Quinn can do. He was very successful in college and he was a high pick. Our starting QB has sucked, period. Why can't we just play Quinn and find out what he can do.
I feel like Anderson fans simply won't admit it, during games they definitely want to find out what Brady Quinn might be able to do if he was playing with this team. DA has sucked, whether it's his fault or not. We have a high prospect, Brady, who might do better. He has never had the chance, it would be nice to find out rather than watch DA squander the freakin season away

So you are trying to compare Favre, PM and CP play in "off years" to what we have seen in DA? Quite a reach y friend. And could you name all of the times you can think of that a change at QB helped O's? You have picked your side it appears, but know better than to think there isn't another side to that coin. And you know it..........
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I think BE needs to step it up BUT anyone who believes he is a major factor to DA's lousy showings is seriously misinformed.
BE probably would not have as may drops if passes were accurate and had some touch on them. Heck, I've watched a couple of replays this season when BE drops the short passes where it looks like the ball is thrown so hard and fast that it bounces off his hands before he can close them... and that's on the QB plain and simple.
In the short game DA has two passes... a limp wristed loft or a lightning bolt... and the lightning bolts are all over the place.
BE definitely has some legit drops but I think that most of that is mental, meaning that if the QB is more consistent then so is BE for example the Giants game.
At the end of the day I feel there are two weak links on this team DA and RAC. RAC might be able to improve to a degree so I'm not so adamant about firing him BUT DA must go.

JC. DA, is not only on the hot seat, he should be on the ejection seat and someone needs to push the eject button.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.
