Come on, you just linked to wikipedia. That's not reputable.

Did you bother to read the link? NOTHING about K2. Just about the suggested/rumored issue he was having.

Why link to it? Why not link to pancreatitis? Or the flu?

After all, here is your comment: Cdawg's comment:

Could be b/c of what he was in for - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elephantiasis

There's a number of sites talking about this rumor and I had a reliable source tell me that this was the case"

End Cdawgs comment.

See, you yourself said it was, based on a reliable source.

Don't call me out when you stated it yourself. Sure, you linked to wikipedia, which is as reliable as linking to my left toe, but you also said " according to a reliable source".

I don't know if I should post this, but I will. Apparently, the FO looked into trading KW2 before the deadline but with the siutation of him in the hospital, couldn't really get the value desired. Again, take it for what it's worth. It may be released to the media in the upcoming days. It would certainly explain his attitude if he found out that he was on the block and his demeanor being what it is.

That's what I'm hearing was the concern of rebutting what was said by KW2. HIPPA wasn't referenced to specifically, I used the term, but privacy issues was.

As michelle said Staph really can be a quick fix if caught early...

Shoot, now I am going to have to research this. I'm interested in knowing the process is to "catch this early" I suppose that means knowing the symptoms and so forth. Either KW has a kick butt immune system or it was caught early as he sure as hell was back on the field quick. (well, not for the Jax game tho..)

K2 may have been very stupid when he was young on the Browns, However his play over the last 2 Seasons have impressed me. When he is healthy he is a Beast he catches passes that should not be caught. His weakness is Blocking and his Mouth. I do not want to see him leave the Browns, when healthy he is one of the best tight-ends in the NFL. We need all the talent we can get.

This is pretty well stated. (except that he may not be much less stupid now).

We've got people saying that Heiden is better anyways.
I like SH. He's a good blocker and can catch. He's good....but as a receiving TE KW2 (as was stated by orgdawg54) catches balls that shouldn't be caught. He commands defensive attention and just that alone makes the other receivers better.

Again, I always thought KW2 to be a bit of a jerk....but he's a special pass catching TE. If we have to part ways with him, then so be it....as long as it's not cutting off our nose to spite...

k-2 is a game changing receiver playing tight end...

steve heiden is a very good tight end, but he's no k-2, it is nice to have a tight end that will block as well as catch the pass, he's not flashy, but he makes big catches. the way he just came out of nowhere and stepped up on monday night football shows what kind of a player he is, and the type of character he has.

i'd really like to have them both, but i have my doubts about winslow sticking around... like i said before, i knew things were sketchy when we drafted rucker last april...

All I will say on the subject is that Toad is right. This is a contract issue.

Thanks B, but I'd clarify that I think it's partially a contract issue.

To be much more specific, I think the "=" part is what we see happening right now. The totality of the factors leading up to this include, but aren't limited to, immaturity and ego by the player, money, and the desire for the organization to keep what's been a problem with Staph somewhat quiet.

In reality, this is shockingly similiar to what's going on with the Saints and...er...Shockey: Player is a head-case, player gets hurt, player blames the organization for questionable care in public. Wash, rinse, repeat.

I'm pretty sure that he wasn't saying that Wikipedia was his reliable source of information telling him exactly what illness was affecting K2. He was saying "according to a reliable source, K2 had illness "x". Here is a link that will give you some more information about exactly what illness "x" is." Hence why he linked to that particular illness. The link was superfluous to the content of his post; it was just provided to expound on the details of the illness.

At least, that's how I took it.

Well if it ends like the Saints I hope we can get a 1st ( I doubt) or at least a 2nd (high)...Or a good CB/LB

Hopefully we will get something good out of him if we do trade him...

IMO it's deserved. Mouthing off about the FO of ANY organization publicly disrupts the harmony of an entire organization.

He definitely does NOT show his leadership by doing that.

Honestly, I'm not sure what to think about Winslow anymore. He's NOT getting open this year based on what I've seen. He doesn't get near the separation he did last year. I'm concerned.

It's actually that people are saying Heiden is more complete and they'd be right.

I've harped on it since before we even drafted him, which is that he's never been a good blocker. That aspect of his game became non-existent after he wrecked his leg.

There's no question that he's uncoverable as a receiver, just as there's no question he's useless to the offense if he's not catching passes. I don't believe we're a better team without him, but I do believe we wouldn't miss him as much as many people think.

Where do I stand on all this (besides being emphatic that he needs to shut his pie-hole?)......I think when push comes to shove, this'll blow over and be attributed to a "fiery player who lost his cool in the heat of the moment because he doesn't like to lose and was frusterated with an injury." I think he's allready realized he blew it, will apologize after his agent fails in a bid to get the suspension overturned, then come back a little bit humble and play hard as hell........until the season is over when they demand a contract extension. That, however, was coming anyway.

On a side note, I meant to do this last night, but forgot. I'd give a standing ovation to Crennel for how he handled Winslow, if in fact he told the truth when he said "I didn't give Winslow the opportunity to apologize" when he talked with him.

I remember Bruschi and some Pats talking about "the RAC Attack" in those interviews after it was announced that Crennel had gotten the job here. Bruschi said something to the effect: You don't ever want to be on the receiving end of one of those. In fact, you don't even want to be in the same room as someone who's on the reciving end of one."

Sounds like RAC might be the only true 'father figure' this kid has ever had.

Winslow just got RACattacked. I would love to have been a fly on the wall for that one...

or maybe on draft day he finds himself traded to the bengals for their 1st and 2nd round picks

In all seriousness, he's a really good pass catching TE, and I believe that if he has a good rest of the year and still acts like a jackass he has a good chance of being traded on draft day for picks. Would you pass up a 1st for him?

We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

I know you were askingToad...

...I wouldn't. Love the way he plays, but something tells me we wouldn't really miss him too much after a few games into the next season.

Per Tony Grossi via Cleveland.com

Browns suspend Kellen Winslow for one game
by Tony Grossi
Tuesday October 21, 2008, 9:00 PM

Tracy Boulian/The Plain Dealer
Kellen Winslow's outburst on Sunday after the loss to the Redskins has prompted a one-game suspension from GM Phil Savage.

GM Savage's full comments

In an unprecedented move for him, Browns General Manager Phil Savage suspended tight end Kellen Winslow one game for conduct detrimental to the club for statements "unwarrated, inappropriate, and unnecessarily disparaging to our organization."
The suspension is effective immediately and lasts until Monday. Winslow will not practice or attend meetings with the team this week. He will be docked one game check, 1/17th of his 2008 base salary of $4 million.

That comes out to a fine of $235,294.

Winslow will appeal the suspension, according to a source. Messages for Drew Rosenhaus, Winslow's agent, were not returned.

In a statement issued by publicist Denise White, Winslow said: "I take responsibility for the fact there might have been a more constructive way to release this, but when I tried to do so I was discouraged from making the issue public. Regardless of how this was released, the information would still remain the same. I contracted staph, again."

Winslow lashed out at Savage after the Browns' 14-11 loss to the Washington Redskins on Sunday.

While still in uniform, Winslow had an animated discussion with Savage in a hallway outside the team's locker room. Following that, Winslow sat in front of his locker and made his remarks in an unemotional tone to The Plain Dealer.

Winslow said his previously undisclosed illness was a staph infection and the Browns concealed it. He said he was upset he did not receive a phone call from Savage while he spent three days in Cleveland Clinic, saying he felt he was treated "like a piece of meat."

The next day, Winslow told ESPN.com that the Browns purposely kept the staph concealed from his teammates.

The staph infection was Winslow's second since needing major surgery on his right knee injured in a motorcycle accident in May of 2005. It was at least the team's seventh staph occurrence since 2004.

"There's obviously a problem and we have to fix it," Winslow said after the Washington game. "Just look at the history around here. It's unfortunate, because it happens time and time again."

Browns GM Phil Savage said Winslow's statements "brought unjustified negative attention to our organization, and violated the team-first concept of our football squad."Savage's statement detailing reasons for the suspension was his first comment on the matter. He said Winslow's illness was undisclosed by the club because Winslow and his representation agreed with the Browns "to make every effort to maintain the confidentiality of his recent medical condition."
Savage said Winslow took part with the entire team in training camp in an "extensive presentation" by experts on how the team was taking preventative measures to reduce the risk of staph.

"Since that meeting," Savage said, "not one player has approached me, Romeo Crennel, or our medical staff with concerns as to how we have dealt with this issue."

Savage concluded Winslow's statements "brought unjustified negative attention to our organization, and violated the team-first concept of our football squad."

In his statement, Winslow said he spoke out "because I felt it was the right thing to do and that is why I was so passionate about it."

The backdrop of this escalating situation is that Winslow and Rosenhaus have been trying to get a new contract and Savage has turned them back. Winslow has three years remaining on his deal, which was extended after his return to the field in 2006, at base salaries of $4 million this year, $4.5 million in 2009 and $4.75 million in 2010.

Winslow denied his contract situation played a part.

"This has nothing to do with football and this has nothing to do with my current contract situation," he said. "This is a health concern."

Winslow first talked of a new contract at the Super Bowl in February in Phoenix. He attended the Pro Bowl in Honolulu and then had another knee surgery -- his fourth.

In April, Savage surprised many by trading a future draft choice to move up in the fourth round to select Missouri tight end Martin Rucker in the fourth round.

Winslow skipped the team's voluntary off-season practices in May and June, but did attend Crennel's one mandatory minicamp in June.

In his post-game remarks on Sunday, Winslow said he thought about asking for a trade prior to the league trade deadline on Oct. 14.

Winslow said in his statement that he wishes to stay with the Browns.

"I remain loyal to the Browns organization, my teammates, the fans and the city of Cleveland," he said. "I remain a hard worker on and off the field in support of my teammates and our goal to have a winning season.

"I hope to be a Brown for a very long time. I know that the organization and I can move forward and focus on having a successful season, which I believe everybody agrees upon."

In the game Winslow missed with a staph infection, the Browns had their biggest offensive output of the season and defeated the undefeated Super Bowl champion New York Giants, 35-14.

We all knew he had to say something, and that Rosenhaus would appeal.

Unfortunately, Winslow's apology STILL reeks of anger and finger pointing.

I'm amazed the dolt would allow that statement to come out in his release As a result, I have to say I was wrong. I stated he'd just say he was emotional about being injured and losing, but he's clearly not that smart

I never wanted him here, and it took me a long time to warm to him. But he's not as indispensible as a lot of people think. I'm willing to deal with his frailty and his inability to block because of what he brings to the table in the passing game. But being a media whore to vent your frustrations weighs the balance into the negative for me.

He's an egotistical, quick tempered brat, just like Braylon, T.O., Chad Johnson, Randy Moss (and if my calculations are correct, soon to be Brandon Marshall ). When you ink them, you have a short window in which to win, otherwise they're going to grumble. There's merit to these guys, and there's all sorts of headaches. The headaches almost always coincide with the losing. They also tend to coincide with Drew Rosenhaus' presence.

Just logged in and seen this suspension! All I can say is WOW.

I can't believe the egos this LOSING team produces and protects.

In recent weeks I have read many posts hailing KW2 as one of the ONLY or the ONLY reliable player we have. Now, in light of his comments which I do not necessarily condone but can absolutely sympathize with, everyone wants to treat him like he's the plague! Un-BELIEVELAND-able.

This staff issue should have come to light immediately. KW2 has every right to be pissed about it and Savage should kiss his ass over it.

I think Phil Savage is one of the best things to happen here since our return but unless he can dress and play at the level that KW2 demonstrates week in and week out, then he damn well should be protecting our interest. I was unbelievably pissed during the off season when milk dud got a contract extension and KW2 was ignored. DA got a deal he did not deserve and KW2 was ignored.

And yes I know he is under contract and it's not our fault he did something stupid and injured himself, BUT while he was sick/injured we renegotiated his contract. He took the hit for not being able to produce then he produce solidly for two years on a VERY professional level. The kid has earned his way back into our good graces and plays his butt off for this team, and I for one think he should have got the new contract.

I can also think of several places we spent money during the offseason that we SHOULD not have. RAC, DA and Hadnot for starters.

So now we give him a week of which he probably needs to fully recover from STAPH AGAIN, and take away a weapon from the sorry excuse for an offense we've been fielding the week we play one of the better teams on our schedule????????????? Talk about cutting your nose off to spite your face. If the FO is so sensitive about the STAPH EPIDEMIC then they should do something constructive about it.

I applaud KW2 for speaking his mind. If MORE players said what was really on their minds instead of being puppets merely delivering the message of RAC and the FO, we might have a real Coach and QB.

AND as far as being treated like meat, well that’s the way I see it too. I had to go to the ER during a High School Wrestling meet with torn muscles on my ribs... The school's sports director and the coach called to make sure I was okay... why? Because they cared... because they were human... who knows? But it made me feel good about them.

Savage could have called him... 30 seconds and none of this is an issue. So maybe he should suspend himself for a week.

It's amazing that you cut on Winslow (Best O weapon) and defend DA (Best opposing defensive weapon)

It's not his hand that needs patted

As I said on page two of this thread. It was not his hand that needed patted. He has now received the swift kick in the ass that should send him a clear message. Now lets see if he is man enough to step back, and give his actions some thought, and come to the correct conclusion that he was wrong. Having been snubbed by him in person on more than one occasion, I doubt he will, but I hope I am wrong.

to a degree I agree with OldColdDawg. I see nothing wrong with him bringing up the staph problem he had...AGAIN. As long as he's not saying that the organization is being negligent.

It's bad enough that the team has got this staph cloud around them....but to start trying to hide when it occurs can now shed a whole different light on what the organization is about.

Personally I'm going to write Randy Lerner a letter. As a season ticket holder paying good money to this organization....an organization supported by the tax payers of the City of Cleveland...we deserve better.

I encourage others to do the same.

Why,...? I have NEVER ONCE even received an acknowledgement of receipt,...!!

Are you whining that Phil Savage to call you?

Just clicking..

We come up with slogans about the name on the door and try to build this concept of team, yet when a member of the team is in the hospital you don't call or make some gesture of support??

I agree that there is more to this than just that, but where I come from, common decency dictates you send a team member a note of support one way or another.

Plus, you have to also consider the wild speculation surrounding the situation...the guy had aids, was kicked in the balls by some girlfriend, he had the clap, testicular cancer....all this stuff putting Winslow in a negative light while the whole time he was remaining silent about the real reason at the request of the Browns.

Seems like the Browns were throwing the guy under the bus to protect their own interests once all the rumors started flying and did nothing to quash it.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

That said, all is forgiven if he brings his can back to the huddle and plays winning ball. Unfortunately, there are other things wrong on this team besides just Winslow.

I have some expertise in regards to HIPPAA. Absolutely no info regarding diagnosis and/or treatment can be given to anyone without a release signed by the patient, guardian or POA. He can specify exactly what and how much of the info can be released...and who it can be released to.

Yes, I know that much.

The team very well may have had their hands tied. I don't know if there's anything in NFL contracts as far as releasing medical info to the public or not.

I wasn't suggesting the Browns release his info. However, we shouldn't be able to lie about our employer and say we picked up staph in their facilities if we didn't even have staph to begin with. There should be a way for the Browns to defend themselves without disclosing anyone's medical issues.

I just wonder ..he got staph again..HOW?..
Next..I have some thoughts about this whole mess..
KW agreed and even spoke about he was glad the Browns didn't speak out about his illness..right?
He said because he's a footballer, he doesn't have to talk about his private life.
Then all of a sudden he blows up about the staph and how they made him keep quite, only after the internet rumors about him sprung forth..
Rac was ticked that he was disrespected because he said "I keep things in house"..so the HC was ticked big time.

The thing we saw that Philly was looking at KW probably wasn't a rumor now that we know the Browns dangled him..but my thought is ..did Phil see this coming or has he had in his mind all along about moving KW?
Or did he see something that suggested I need to get something for him now because he's on the decline?

Usually the bacteria living on your skin (or in a locker room where there's LOTS of skin) sneaks into a small cut and BAM!, you have staph. Perhaps, since KW2 has had it twice, he should be tested as a carrier when he's healthy. Maybe then it would shut his mouth.

LOL, oops...

Shouldn't be his knee. It shouldn't have any open skin at this point.

I agree, and if that is the case, I fully understand the suspension.

I haven't read the whole thread.....is that what happened or is being speculated as has happened??

If it proves true, I retract my earlier comments.

This wasn't a minor gripe like, "They aren't getting me the ball enough." He basically said that the team doesn't care about its players, and that the players' surrounding environment was unsafe.

That kind of comment can not only foster unnecessary mid-season distractions, but also impact the team's future ability to sign players.
He burned the bridge down ..Phil will trade him..
Funny..I said before the draft that Rucker was a draft target to replace KW..
I really think Phil had that in mind when he took him..

I happen to think that's what happened, but that's just from trying to read between the lines. In his press release suspending Winslow, "Savage shot back with a 352-word statement on Tuesday, suspending Winslow and calling his comments and behavior “unwarranted, inappropriate, and unnecessarily disparaging to our organization. His statements brought unjustified negative attention to our organization, and violated the team-first concept of our football squad".

He said "unjustified", "unwarranted", and "unnecessarily disparaging". Sounds to me like they are saying he's full of crap by using those words. If he didn't have staph, and the Browns KNOW it, I think that's why he's riding the pine. JMO.

No it wasnt, Kellen wanted Phil or the organization to PAY for not calling him in the hospital, he wanted to cause them trouble...flat out he wanted to put a mark on them, so he spoke out in the media,

Common he didnt care a rats behind about getting this possible dirty enviorment out in the open so something could be done, common if thats the truth, you dont bring it up after you just lost a football game, you do that becuase your mad at the organization and you want them to pay for hurting your feeling.

Kellen tossed his team & the organization under the bus Sunday, bye using the media right after a team loss for his own personnal soap box display, on why I'm mad.

KW excellent player, great TE.....but he's a me player, he talks a team player at times, but alot of his actions really dont show a team attitude.

It appears that he was possibly more ticked that he was dangled for a trade and it didn't happen..he did say he thought about being traded but tit never occured..
Knowing he really wasn't going to get that contract extension stuck in his craw worse than the staph....
Funny..if he felt he was truely in the right why hasn't his agent spoken out that this is all a lie?
Could this be a case of him contracting a infection by something he did and Phil was ticked at him???

Remember he was content that the Browns didn't go public about the illness..which makes me go to the comments about the laws regarding a players health and injuries..

You may be right.

I hadn't read Savage's statement, but in reading what you posted, it does come pretty close to being a outright denial.

Jeez, where to start.......

Quote:

This staff issue should have come to light immediately. KW2 has every right to be pissed about it and Savage should kiss his ass over it.

Quote:

I was unbelievably pissed during the off season when milk dud got a contract extension and KW2 was ignored. DA got a deal he did not deserve and KW2 was ignored.

You do realize that the only other options were to let him walk away free and clear or throw the tag on him, which would have cost us MORE money, right?

Quote:

The kid has earned his way back into our good graces and plays his butt off for this team, and I for one think he should have got the new contract.

It's not that simple. We can't just hand out contracts like Time-share brochures.

Quote:

So now we give him a week of which he probably needs to fully recover from STAPH AGAIN, and take away a weapon from the sorry excuse for an offense we've been fielding the week we play one of the better teams on our schedule????????????? Talk about cutting your nose off to spite your face. If the FO is so sensitive about the STAPH EPIDEMIC then they should do something constructive about it.

Uh......Didn't he just play in the game? He's ALLREADY RECOVERED from Staph. Hello!!!

Also, didn't you read that the organization has gone to great lengths to address the issue of Staph?? There's little else they can do at this point.

Don't legitimize Winslow's ham-fisted, selfish, clearly WRONG comments by saying it's ok because he got Staph. Remember, his own teammates "rolled their eyes" and Jamal Lewis essentially yanked him away from the camera. Furthermore, do you see anyone in the league, on the team, or in the media saying that this suspension is unwarranted?

Quote:

I applaud KW2 for speaking his mind. If MORE players said what was really on their minds instead of being puppets merely delivering the message of RAC and the FO, we might have a real Coach and QB.

Let the inmates run the prison. Great philosophy! It works every time *L*

Quote:

Savage could have called him... 30 seconds and none of this is an issue.

You're right. I think we all just IMAGINED his comments in his tirade about not getting a new contract.

Cold, there's SO much more here going on than the picture you're seeing. If it were only as cut-and-dry as you make it out to be......

It's amazing that you cut on Winslow (Best O weapon) and defend DA (Best opposing defensive weapon)

Oh, I see. Protect Winslow and his conduct detrimental to the team because he can catch a football As for the DA comment, if it were any QB coming off the year DA had last year, while facing the injury and continuity issues that the ENTIRE offense has faced this year, I'd be singing the same tune. If it were Couch, Kosar, Holcomb, or Brady, the stance would remain the same.

Now lets see if he is man enough to step back, and give his actions some thought, and come to the correct conclusion that he was wrong.

He clearly didn't. Read his "prepared statement." He didn't say he was sorry for the storm he created. In fact, he reiterated that there was a "problem" and is STILL angry

Sorry GM, you're not wrong.

Quote:

to a degree I agree with OldColdDawg. I see nothing wrong with him bringing up the staph problem he had...AGAIN. As long as he's not saying that the organization is being negligent.

Vette, that's EXACTLY what he's saying! He essentially reiterated that in his "apologetic" prepared statement.

Honestly Clay, I don't think Winslow is smart enough to come up with that plan that quickly.

It's nothing more than yet another life-long spoiled-brat athlete crying because for once they weren't taken by the hand and coddled. As a few of us have stated, his comments about his contract tell us that's a BIG part of what's going on here. If he'd have gotten his new contract, he wouldn't have said anything.

He's just angry and upset. His immaturity and ego led directly to the things he said.

I'm not so sure that he or his agent would be informed the week before the deadline that he was being offered for trade. Teams don't exactly call the players ahead of time and tell them they are being dangled.

However, I think you hit on an interesting thought. Though I'm not sure he was mad at being shopped because I don't think he knew, I find it VERY interesting that not only was he being shopped, but he was, at the same time, thinking about ASKING to be shopped.

Looks like a divorce in the making

I do have to say I'm shocked that Winslow is being defended here. Hell, his own teammates know he was wrong.

***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy.

Just clicking...

Sometimes I wonder if the fans in this city will ever embrace a superstar with a strong personality. When something like this happens, everyone assumes that Kellen, because he's brash, is completely at fault in this situation and that he's a "punk" that we can just replace and move on. Personally, I think some of the attitudes expressed here are absolutely ridiculous.

Kellen was an idiot when we drafted him. After the accidents and rehabs though, I think we saw a transformation and maturation. That's not to say he still doesn't have a fiery personality, because he does, but he became a guy who took that fire and used it to play through pain and take huge hits without a peep instead of being a guy who just runs his mouth every game. All of a sudden, he expresses frustration publicly and he's back to being an idiot in some people's minds.

This is a guy who is frustrated. He pours his heart and soul out on the field and can't even get a phone call from Savage. The thing is, he's not the first... Bentley had the exact same gripe and Jurevicius didn't get one either. Why does everyone excuse Savage in this whole mess?

There's a reason Winslow feels like a "piece of meat" to Savage... he is. Phil is a scout... he's not a general manager. Between the inner conflicts with Collins, the fact that Phil has admitted he's not that good with the business aspects of the franchise and the fact that he's clearly not considerate to his players, I think he's in over his head and probably more duplicitous than any of us realize. Was Winslow right for speaking out about this? Not at all. I just think he felt unappreciated and trapped.

Winslow is brash and passionate, but he's a hell of a player and he is NOT replaceable by Heiden, who is absolutely useless after he catches the ball. Regardless of whether or not he can block, he's the kind of player at TE that most teams would kill to have. He's definitely at fault for taking these issues public and deserves to be reprimanded in some way, but who is at fault for pushing him to the point where he felt his only out was to take this to the media?

The point is, the fault lies both on Winslow and our front office. If it hasn't become apparent already with the Bentley/Collins/Winslow situations, this organization is rotten to the core, even if we don't see it fully given how hard they try to hide everything from our eyes. Honestly, this is more than just an incident... this is a problem with the organization's culture and attitude. The only way something like that can be changed is to gut the foundation and start fresh and, if that means letting Savage's head roll in addition to cleaning out the coaching staff, then so be it.

For someone who spoke so often about how he was going to change the culture away from a losing attitude and disjointed organization, he sure did a good job of building exactly what he preached against.

Winslow's recent selfish acts will end his time with Browns
Winslow has an agent known for his tactics

By Patrick McManamon
Beacon Journal sports columnist

Published on Wednesday, Oct 22, 2008

The suspension of Kellen Winslow for Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars is more than a one-game sitdown.

It's the beginning of the end of Winslow's time with the Browns.

This comes from nothing anyone said privately or publicly, but from the occurrences of the past few days and from the statement released by General Manager Phil Savage that was so cold it had icicles dripping from it.

This clearly is one angry GM.

Savage has always been restrained with announcements and news. That he was blunt and direct in the statement about Winslow speaks volumes.

Savage called Winslow's comments ''unwarranted, inappropriate, and unnecessarily disparaging to
our organization.'' He said the comments ''brought unjustified negative attention to our organization, and violated the team-first concept of our football squad.''

He also gave a scintillating defense of the team's attempts to prevent and treat staph infection.

Coach Romeo Crennel spoke on the issue on Monday — it would have been nice to hear from Savage at that point — and the coach did his best to defuse things. It did not sound like he favored a suspension.

But Winslow undercut Crennel twice — first after the game on Sunday, then Monday morning when he had more to say after meeting with Crennel on the team plane Sunday night.

Winslow cares about the team. But he also believes that he is better than most anyone and that is why he expects the ball.

This time, though, he put himself ahead of the team. After a tough loss, he made it about himself. If his coach is not on board with the suspension — and does anyone expect Crennel to say anything today except ''we've moved on''? — Winslow need only realize he is the one who put his coach in this position.

As for the staph infections, to imply that the team is not trying to prevent them is absurd.

That being said, if any player on the team is not even mildly concerned about staph he's not looking at reality. It's scary — even though it's not exclusively a Browns problem.

For that reason, Winslow had reason to be frustrated at again having staph.

But his timing on his complaints was worthy of much head-scratching.

Not to mention it's not wise to confront a GM in a hallway, clad fully in football gear except for a helmet.

The case can be made that the suspension came too late. Savage had not publicly disciplined a player even though two years ago Braylon Edwards had his hands out asking for something (remember — the helicopter to Ohio State-Michigan and falling asleep in the players' lounge?).

But in Winslow's case you have to wonder how much of what is happening is orchestrated to get Winslow out of Cleveland and into a new contract with another team.

That's what Winslow has wanted since the offseason — for his contract to be redone.

He knows that he's on borrowed time with his knee. The motorcycle accident that cost him a season also will cost him a longer career.

With a couple or a few years left, he wants to get paid — and he also knows that he's played through pain that would have sidelined most players.

The Browns were in no rush to redo the deal — and even drafted tight end Martin Rucker.

Winslow's agent is Drew Rosenhaus, who gets big deals. He's also represented players who made things extremely unpleasant with the team.

See: Terrell Owens doing situps in his driveway in Philadelphia.

See: Chad Johnson, who spent the entire offseason trying to rile his way out of Cincinnati.

See: Plaxico Burress, who got a new contract in the offseason and still was suspended for a game in New York.

See: Lito Sheppard, who made a lot of noise in the offseason in Philadelphia about wanting a new contract after he had signed a five-year, $25 million deal in 2006 (Rosenhaus said Sheppard ''outperformed'' the contract).

Players know Rosenhaus will get deals.

It's the teams that have to deal with the tactics.

Winslow will come back and be the good soldier — though that's probably not the best word to use when talking about him.

But you almost wonder if an immediate clean break might not be best for everyone.

This bridge isn't burned.

It's blown into a million little pieces.
