I don't think Savage is a liar, nor was he intending to deceive anyone about the situation. As far as he knew no one told K2 to keep it all quiet, can't say if he told the staff that or didn't think anyone would be stupid enough to tell K2 that, but as far as Savage was aware no one asked K2 to keep it quiet. Romeo's pressers back this up, basically that K2 was in the hospital and that the reason is not being disclosed out of respect to K2 (and all the HIPPA laws that would bury the Browns if they did release the info without consent).
The most recent issue with Savage coming into the media room and stating 'no second illness' was his attempt to clarify his earlier comments, post game hallway presser. He led the media to believe there was a second issue, it was not his intent (when I watched it I did not get that impression), but he wasn't clear enough that it was one issue (staph). The press, imo, assumed there was a second issue and went crazy tripping over themselves to write it up, no one asked if he had a second issue, but they 'assumed' and went with it. Everyone knew he had staph by this point, since K2 said as much a week earlier. Savage wasn't clear when he asked the PR guy if they could talk about the issue, and the PR guy nodded 'no'. That 'no' was more about the specifics of the staph, where it was located on K2's body and where he contracted it.
The entire episode is getting more legs than it should, imo.
Yes the Browns have had many cases of staph through the years (six or seven). ((Not a bad article (especially for ESPN) on our situation and staph. espn article on staph ))
The speculation on his 'illness', on top of the loss to Was and K2 being an emotional player/leader led him to spout off when he shouldn't have. Unless he knows where he got the staph specifically and can prove that it was within the organization. K2 led everyone to believe he got it at the Browns facility, which may or may not be true; however without knowing for sure he spouted off and threw the organization onto the freeway.
The org took exception to that, as they should, and suspended him. Perhaps a bit harsh, but the suggestion that we pump staph through the air conditioning ducts (an exaggeration I know ) is not something that looks favorably on the Browns in future negotiations with players and coaches.
Once Savage learned about the text messages I'm sure he thought something along the lines of 'great, I've made the organization and myself look like jerks'.
However as a structure the organization was fine, they authorized no one to contact K2 with 'demands/requests' he not mention what put him in the hospital, but the media's insistence and the rumors out there made it the topic everyone wanted to know. And the Browns' hands were tied by HIPPA (rightfully so) where they could not divulge the information.
A 'rogue' PR person sent him text's. probably with no understanding of HIPPA (not that many of us do - but we do understand rights to privacy (unlike the media who's motto is 'your right to know supersedes your right to exist'!)).
Savage didn't lie because he said what he could say based on the best information he had at the time. However he was far from clear.
That's just my opinion, I could be wro... wro..., misinformed.
Just to add another tidbit (and no need for another post), here is a snippet from Peter King's MMQB about staph and K2 that I think is worth sharing. From his 'things I think I think' section.
5. I think I'm not convinced that staph infections are any more prevalent in football locker rooms than they are in the general public. But I do believe the NFL would be smart to hold another seminar for trainers and team physicians at the Scouting Combine -- the only place where all team medics gather in one place for several days every year -- in February. The NFL needs to allay the fears of so many of its players about how much is being done to fight staph.
But let's look at the numbers. The Centers for Disease Control estimates 12 million Americans get medical help for staph infections annually, which, in a population of 305 million, is about 4 percent of the population. In a league of approximately 2,080 players (I estimate 53 active players plus eight practice-squad players plus four on IR or PUP per team, which is conservative), that would mean the average in line with America's staph occurrence would be 83 players annually.
The league won't release the numbers of staph-infected players, so we can't know for sure if it's fewer or more than 83. But look at it this way: If I told you there were 83 documented cases of staph in the NFL in 2007 (2008, obviously, is not over), you'd say, "That's an epidemic.'' But no more an epidemic than elsewhere in the United States. And I'd be very surprised if there were 83 cases of staph among players in 2007, as would most NFL players and executives; that would be 2.6 cases per team, which seems high.
I asked Indy GM Bill Polian, who has become well-educated about staph because of the Peyton Manning case, if he felt staph was running rampant in the league. "Absolutely not,'' he said. In Manning's case, by the way, the staph infection developed in the fluid that accumulated in the bursa sac that eventually had to be removed because of the infection.
6. I think -- and I said this all week -- that there are so many reasons why Kellen Winslow is probably not long for Cleveland, but there is one overriding one: money. The staph-mania is a legitimate story, and the Browns have to continue their vigilance to make sure the infections don't continue to be any more of a problem in Cleveland than they are for any other franchise. But the biggest source of tension Winslow has with the team is that he's had two very good years and two years when a knee injury kept him off the field.
mmqb
Statistics are like a bikini; what they show is interesting, but what they hide is vital. Drive for show (1st round), Putt for dough (rest of draft).

NONE of you guys know if KW2 had anything other than staph. You're all just using your dislike of Winslow to take a shot at him and protect Phil Savage, who screwed the pooch here.
Layer it with BS all you want. The truth is Winslow said he had staph and the team wanted to cover it up. He got blasted for that. Then, whoops, turns out the was telling the truth. Now the KW2 haters/Phil lovers have no legs to stand on so it's "Well, he's really got something else, *wink, wink* but it's embarassing so he's covering it up and Phil can't say.....blah, blah, blah...."
What's next? Do we get to read more made up ailments that can't be proved? Or are we gonna let it be what it is.....a screwup by the FO that makes them look like boneheads but one that will blow over as soon as KW2 is back catching passes again?
One other thing that bothers me about all this is that several posters are getting away with creating their own rumor that is being perpetuated by even more posters on here. Seems slightly unseemly to me.

How about just being professional? Be human behind closed doors but show some restraint and represent this team as a professional.
He was unprofessional ( or human as you call it ) not once, not twice, but three times. That would be radio interview, Sunday night interview, then the two sentence classic we got yesterday.
And in case anyone didn't know, they yanked the Sunday night interview off of the main page. Hmm...
I am not defending Winslow here as much as I am blasting Savage. I think Winslow had plenty to do with this ... he may even be more at fault than Savage or the team ... and that is probably likely. But Savage should have been more professional in his behavior and actions.
He is not permitted to be human ... well, maybe once ... but not three times. Not when it pertains to representing this team as GM.
It's also revealed cracks under the surface in his psyche. I'm not claiming he has to be perfect, but I don't believe he has exhibited the type of leadership that we should expect.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

He HAS to say their is no secondary illness since he can't say what it was. And he's getting beat up for coming close the the law about revealing ANYTHING medical ( even that he thought Winslow and family would not want it public) Savage WANTS to tell all...but he CAN'T. So he eats it at this point and just says.. Yea.... sure, it was nothing but staph.
Phil and RAC are God's. They never make mistakes KW2 told the truth, but he's the scum. Phil backtracked and mispoke, but didn't lie.
That's hoiw it is around here no matter what. I thought you'd have figured that out by now.
You see, he could have cut himself on a car door, but contracted staff at the facility. On that, we'll never know.
But you can get staff in a wound AFTER you get the wound. Where you got the wound, and where the staff was contracted into the wound are in no way related.
So we can sit here and pretenbd, guess and accuse all we would like. But it means nothing. While the cut may not have been "football related", the staff may have been. It may not have been.
But it was "people who worked inside the Browns" who asked that it not be disclosed. With or without Phil knowing. But what does it say if the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing?
I'll let you all decide for yourselves......................

If you think a low level PR associate has the stones to go on a "rogue" mission to cover up Winslow's staph infection for the good of the Cleveland Browns, then I don't know what to tell you.

Thursday, Savage said, "Due to the nature of this particular situation, it seemed that the people involved wouldn't want it out there."
Is there something about the nature of this particular situation that would cause embarassment to the guy who has the staph? How in the world could that be? Is that what is keeping Winslow hiding behind HIPPA; not staph but the nature of where and how he got it? Not a "secondary illness" but a damn embarassing situation which caused him to contract staph?
It's all BS and it's all started by a player who claimed his MAIN concern was alerting his teammates of the staph, but instead of telling them privately or in a team meeting, he dropped a bomb on them, (you know, the one's he is so damn concerned about), in an interview through the media which has caused a firestorm of distractions for all his teammates and the FO for going into it's second week now with Kellen Winslow squarely as the center of attention.
Was that the best way to help his teammates of whom he is so considerate?
BS!

1st off there is no such thing as "low level PR" since whatever they say reaches the public just as much as a Randy Lerner comment.
2nd Who said if it was a "low level" or a 'upper level" ... answer nobody, it's you jumping to conclusions again in your haste to roast Savage over a open pit.

I tried to text her but I'm not sure if I have her new number or not. She was smart to stop posting. She had to be very careful in what she said, especially since some of those that get blasted are her friends. Next time you hear from her, have her email me. it's in my profile.
As to the subject at hand. Both GM and Coach agree. I know for a fact they have access to some within the Browns. If thet say it, I take it as gospel.

DING DING DING DING!!!! WE HAVE A WINNTER!!!!!!!!!
Pit, Heldawg, and all the others jumping to conclusions without the facts really crack me up. Pit, Phil isn't God, no one claimed he was. However, you are dead wrong in your statements. I have never in my life heard of a car door being used for where Winslow had his staph....and you have no idea what or where it was or you wouldn't be making such an absurd statement.
WInslow's hiding behind HIPPA because he ould be the butt of every joke available for where the staph infection was and what opening in the skin it came from. You guys can crucify Savage all you want. The simple truth is that you are doing exactly what K2 and his people knew would happen if they hid safely behind HIPPA. Good job, guys, you made K2 look like a genius and that takes some doing.

General reply
K2 said the Browns told him not to reveal that he had staph. was that true? yes it was.
Phil said the Browns did not tell Winslow to hide the fact that he had staph? was that true? no it wasnt. proof was in the text. Does that make Phil a liar? It does to those without having head buried in sand or the FO's buttocks.
Phil claims there was a secondary ailment. was that true? Depends on what you believe Phils first statement or his second. Does that mean he is a liar? yes and not a very good one.
Get off the crack people. Savage makes a good decision praise the decision but atleast have the freaking guts to say the guy screwed the pooch on this one and was caught lieing.
I know it sucks to be wrong but many of you were completely wrong but live with it and move on. It doesnt help to make up things to try to help your stance. I swear without reading this thread I knew who would be blaming it all on k2 while saying phil is the poor guy being taken advantage of. Its really quiet humorous.

Hel, you, Otto, Mourg, and Pit need to let this go. Neither you nor Mourg could conceivably believe that a PR person may have txt'ed Winslow without Savage's order.
Yet there it is in the national media, LONG after said rumor was working it's way through this site.
Now that there's proof, suddenly it's a conspiracy theory, where it's fancy to challenge people by saying they "have their heads in the sand" if they don't believe something that doesn't have a shred of evidence to back up the claim.
Hell, common sense says that not even Savage would be so stOOpid as to hammer Winslow with a suspension, then turn around and decide he was wrong, changing direction.
As the details continue to leak out, it's now obvious that Savage learned of what happened, then had no choice BUT to rescind the suspension.
But here's the kicker: Winslow still paid a hefty $20k fine.
Hey, if I didn't do anything wrong, I won't pay ANY fine. Not one red cent. But he did.
I say this with the utmost respect because I enjoy talkin' ball with you guys as I would to any friend at the bar watching the game:
You're responses are no longer based in fact, but stem from a desire to throw sand on a guy you don't like. You've lost. Give it up. You're a four-man team of extremists passing out flyers on the street-corner that tell us all there's a mother-ship on it's way, and if we don't believe it, we're idiots! Why should we believe it? YOU HAVE NO PROOF.
WE have FAR more proof that shows a PR person did this on their own. But you know what? IT DOESN'T MATTER EVEN IF SAVAGE ASKED WINSLOW TO BE QUIET! The story goes that Winslow agreed, then chose to break the deal.
No matter how this is painted, Winslow is the one that spoke out of turn. Winslow is the one who still had to pay a fine. Winslow is the one who's getting the rolling eyes from his teammates.
Savage is absolved. I warned you to wait until all the fÚcts came out before y'all started pounding the gavels, but you rushed to a snap judgement. Now you either have to continue to fight a losing fight, looking rather silly in the process, or you can simply let it go and let it die.
There is no other choice, because you have no other proof besides conspiracy theory doctrine.

Dude...what's up night owl. You do know that none of this is personal right? Just because I'm carrying the torch with many great posters behind me doesn't mean I don't give message board love to all. This is not a battle waged with any of us having stake in the battle. I feel I have a stake because I had to pay a few grand for club seat PSLs but whatever it is what it is. Just for one second hit the reset button and look at it fresh. I'm saying and I'm purely speculating because I don't know....but I have a really really high bullsomething detector because I've been in sales for more than a decade and my wife is a PR powerhouse..... That this could have been DICTATED by Savage to Winslow directly. I don't really need to expound on that. Just let it sink in because that is certainly plausible. I think that is probable based on everything I know. Take one hour (everyone take one hour that disagrees with me), let that set in and then respond as you would like to respond. I'll be happy to respond after anyone who lets this sink in responds. Love to all!

I don't have a tambourine. I actually have a banjo. Don't ask me to play. I suck. But I'm right about this. Phil screwed the pooch on this one and the usual gang of "Phillies" can't bring themselves to admit it. One other thing....Why does it matter to people where the staph was? Does that really make a difference to anyone, because it doesn't to me. It was staph, not syphillis. Get a grip Winslow haters.....

Of course it is..yes to all the above..but the Sherlock Holmes..errrr.Pink Panthers...errrr Inspector Cluelesses don't want to look at the evidence in front of their eyes.. It's all BS and it's all started by a player who claimed his MAIN concern was alerting his teammates of the staph, but instead of telling them privately or in a team meeting, he dropped a bomb on them, Of course grandstanding doesn't convict anyone..it diverts attention from certain questions..like HOW DID YOU GET THIS STAPH?? BTW anytime you do something like he just did and try to embarrass your GM..YOU know the ramifications...U know what you're doing..easy to tell he wants OUT.. But as Toad just said if you didn't do anything wrong why are you paying the fine?? Why wouldn't you fight the whole thing?? And it's not been touched on about this rep for K2 that was ready to go public about him getting cut by a car door? What stopped him?? Car door..yeah I 'm sure the door had a harpoon lodged in it ....if it comes out what he did..he will be the biggest joke since reality shows..

then you just dont understand. k2 screwed up again, and rather risk embarrassment, he decided to hide like a pansy behind hippa.
it matter because he did not get this from the clinic, the cleveland facility, or otherwise from a browns associated place. he knowingly ignored advice and training provided by the team to treat and prevent staph.
did he have groin surgery to contract staph?
even if the FO made some mistakes handling this, the situation would have never developed if k2 hadn't made another stupid mistake to put the team, and himself, at risk. he got the staph.....thats the trigger here that you so easily forget.
now, if you can explain how savage and company are responsible for the illness.....then you have a bowl rather than a colander.

BANG...and it's not something anyone is forgetting..they don't see that .
Keep in mind that someone in the front office (who ought to be fired) apparently decided on his/her own to text Winslow and order him to keep the staph thing a secret in order to prevent a "firestorm". The employee also added a vague (or not so vague) threat that if KW didn't comply, Savage would "get involved". Apparently this was all done without Savage's knowledge.
So when KW calls BS and decides to announce to the press that he contracted staph, plus criticize Phil for not having the courtesty to call him, Savage was not completely aware of all that transpired. It's easy to say in hindsight that he handled it poorly, but he did not have all the relevant information at the time.
Once he was made aware of the text messages, he realized they were inappropriate and ill-advised, and was forced to retract the suspension. He looked like an idiot mainly because of the mistake of some well-meaning underling.
Lerner prefers to operate behind the scenes and that's what he did in this case. He called Winslow personally so smooth things over. And I agree that he most likely ordered Savage to nip the "gray area" thingy in the bud. Savage probably got called on the carpet and ordered to fix it, and that's why he was so angry, because he got his nose rubbed in it by the boss, and because it wasn't all his fault to begin with.

No I don't think he is a Liar...I think Savage is in a position of innocence but cannot state his case due to the HIPPA laws.
KW2 was SOOOOOOO out of line on this - Savage a liar? No, more so frustrated cause he is getting raked through the coals by a few and the farther away from the team the more he's getting raked. you know like CNN Sports and things like that. What local sports writer is siding with KW2??? Thats cause they got more info...thats cause they were on the team flight, thats cause they saw this enfold and KW2 is WRONG!! And to site staph infection and protecting his teamates was so out of line it isn't funny its almost CRIMINAL!!!
I lost all respect for him.
I love the way the Offense performs without him.
I think he's a very talented individual.
If I was choosing up a touch team he'd be high up there.
If I'm running a football TEAM his value decreases cause he does not understand simple things like a Scheme and certain zones are to be left open on certain plays cause its all in the PLAN for a later play. When he incorrectly leaves his route and exposes an OPEN Zone he thinks he is doing good...(usually waving his arms, I'M OPEN!) but what he just did was ruin our next play. Its the little things. Like Chip blocking, run blocking. Call me crazy but the O runs smoother without him.
If he was a Positive and not a low life piece which he is being...I'd say keep him here there is use for a very athletic TE. But he isn't a positive and he disrupts the FLOW of the O and he and his Devil Agent are hell bent on getting More Money!
If there was an agreement to keep this hush hush...it was more than mutual cause its not football related (if football related Savage would be able to discuss the circumstances in detail) But its of the personal nature and the Staph Infection had nothing to do with the Browns, Berea, Training facilities. And for him to imply that was MALICIOUS behavior for his own personal means...and then to LIE...(talk about being a LIAR!) and state that he's just a Soldier and protecting his teamates cause of the Staph Infection...what a load of crap. And the media for from this subject make him out as a HERO??!!!!
Remember the text messages were not from Savage...remember the text messages were from a PR person/s on the team and definitely on a PR basis any mention of Staph infection would be wise to keep private. But the HOW n WHY not being mentioned by KW2 is where the malicious behavior comes from. And it was done to do one thing. HURT THE TEAM.
What I see from Savage is not a LIAR but somebody who really got emotional at this total Selfish act of the most devious nature. What I saw was a frustrated Savage cause his hands are tied in the TRUTH.
Obviously there was a mutual agreement to be hush hush about this "AILMENT" totally...that means the Ailment as well as the INFECTION. It wasn't the FO going to KW2 and saying...Please don't mention anything....please. If anything it was the other way around and we obliged.
KW2 is done as a Brown...pure and simple. And as far as I'm concerned - Good Riddance!
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!

Did the BRowns have an issue with Winslow revealing he had a staph infection? Or was it Winslow that wanted to keep it secret?
This is biggest question of all...it ultimatley explains what really happened and whos at fault.
The story (one of them) from the Browns is KW2 didnt want reveal he had an infection...ok...fair enough...then why suspend him when he came out and said so?
If the Browns were ok with it and KW2 was the one upset...(and there is no secondary illness AS PHIL SAVAGE SAID)...then why in the world would the Browns be upset with that....and if it was KW2's decision to not reveal it why did he get into an argument with Phil and then blast the organization(which was wrong...be the bigger man KW)?
Why was KW2 so upset if it was HIS CHOICE?
IT WASNT!
The Browns didnt want this to come out...they did not want the staph infection known...they told KW2 to shut up about it...he did for awhile then the rumors came out...KW2 confronted Phil...Phil refused KW2...KW2 went to the media and then went to far..instead of just stating his infection.
THe text messages telling KW2 to bve qiuet must have been at Phils attention...if what Phil is saying is true....KW2 had the ok to come out and say he had a staph infection....so why suspend him when he did?
Phil knew about the texts because he too did not want KW2 to say anything...Phil wanted it kept secret..it was the Browns choice to keep it scret not KW2's.
When KW2 came out and said so...Phil suspended him BECAUSE HE WENT TO THE MEDIA!
If Phl had no knowledge of the texts than as far as he was concerned KW2 could share his infection at will...BUT PHIL WAS THE ONE WHO TOLD KW TO SHUTUP!
Proof is in the pudding...the Browns overreacted...they muffed this up...so instead of apologizing and using the text messagers as a scapgoat..Phil continues to lie.
He had to rescind the suspension or get creamed in the hearing by an arbitrator...
KW2 is not without fault...he was immature and went to far...but the situation was created by Phil.
As signs point right at Phil Savage....and tankfully this didnt go to arbitration and the Browns made to look like idioits.

Ok, I'll keep playin'. It's kinda fun Quote:

NO, that isn't the biggest question of all.
The BIGGEST question, the one that determines who's REALLY at fault in all of this is as follows:
Was Winslow within his right to say WHAT he said during his post-game interview, then CONTINUE to say what he was saying through his post-game press release?
The answer is a clear HELL NO.
Quote:
The story (one of them) from the Browns is KW2 didnt want reveal he had an infection...ok...fair enough...then why suspend him when he came out and said so?
Because he didn't just say "I had Staph."
He said he felt like a piece of meat, that the higher ups didn't care about him, and to suggest that the Browns medical staff had a bigger problem than just himself.
It's the difference between saying:
"I don't care for your opinion" versus "I HOPE YOU ROT IN HELL, YOU CAN **** OFF AND DIE!"
See the difference?

Here we FREAKIN' go again
Let me AGAIN point this out for you:
Quote:
Winslow appealed the suspension, which was dropped late Saturday night after the Browns reportedly learned Winslow had received text messages from a member of Cleveland's media relations staff who told him not to reveal he had staph.
So NO, Savage didn't order the messages be sent.
The story is out for ALL to see now.
Quote:

Proof is in the pudding...
You: Leap of faith without proof Us: Media reports stating Savage didn't know. When he found out, he IMMEDIATELY went to work to rescind the fine.
Z, you guys really need to get a grip with this. Y'all seem to think Savage sits in his office and pulls strings like a puppet-master 24-hours a day. Do you REALLY think he was sitting in the back tunnel, secretly calling the PR person, making promises to take care of that persons career and family in return for "secretly" telling Winslow to STFU?
First you and the other jump WAY too fast to make your conclusion. Many of us warned you to wait until you heard ALL the facts. You didn't. Now that the FACTS are coming out, you STILL reach for conspiracy theory conclusions that have absolutely ZERO proof of what you're stating.
Quote:
KW2 is not without fault...he was immature and went to far...but the situation was created by Phil.
I guess it was Phil who went to the media first. I guess it was Phil who text'ed Winslow (despite PROOF to the contrary) I guess it was Phil who threw the organization under the bus I guess it was Phil who had to have his teammates pull him away, rolling their eyes I guess it was Phil who had to play the $20k fine
Winslow pops off, but it's Phil's fault..........unbelievable.
The ONLY way the Browns look bad here is because of the rogue decision of that PR person. That created much of the confusion, though WINSLOW created the situation.
End of story.

Winslow would have had no oppurtunity to pop off had the Browns just said he had a staph infection THIS WHOLE MESS could have been avoided. The Browns version of what happened makes no sense...and has been changed...several times...and now it was some rogue position coach? Using simple logic...its easy to see what transpired. KW2 got a staph infection...the Browns have had issues with Staph infections...ALOT of issues. They've been trying hard to figure out whats wrong...and they have to or a lawsuit could creep into the picture. Its not in the Browns best intrest to have yet another Staph infection come out. So KW2 is told be quiet..which hes ok with..no biggie..its shows up "undisclosed illness". Week goes by...rumors about an STD are on the web and radio. KW2 wants Phil to tell everyone whats up...and now...he argues with Phil over it...nothing changes....KW2 (wrongly) looses it and goes overboard because hes ticked at Phil and feels like hes being treated badly...when in reality it happens everyday inthe NFL. So now Phil, instead of getting the facts straight....goes overboard and suspends KW2...Drew quickly looks into it and finds a bunch of dirt...finds the Browns were in the wrong...calls up Phil. Phil doesnt want stuff to go public...hes got the txt message excuses..so he makes a deal to save the embarrasment of a hearing and possibly a lawasuit from the players union. Had the Browns had ANY LEG to stand on they would not have canceld the suspension BUT THEY HAD NOTHING. I totally agree what KW2 said was wrong...way too far....but the situation would not presented itself had Phil said what was up. Its a mutal mess...but the blame goes on phil...he set things in motion...and KW2 got ticked. This wasnt a rogue player bashing his HC or whinning about the ball or a contract...he was mad because of what was out there and the Browns refusal to say anything. Phil got him back for the contract dispute earlier....but Phil went ot far...got caught...and now is lieing through his teeth. Again...if the Browns were even remotely justified in suspending him...they would not have rescinded it.Or you can beleive one of the stories the Browns have offered..(without a rebuttal from KW) about this...of course theres makes no sense and change as they make stuff up.
