I wouldn't mind seeing another dose of Coach Schottenheimer. Don't know how much control he would demand though. He didn't leave on the same terms Cowher did though.
I wouldn't care if it was either of those two, but I would take Marty back before giving Cowher a chance.
That said, I'm really hoping they go to someone else -- and I cannot explain why -- or, Quinn runs us to 10-6 and RAC stays,....

If Quinn wins the remainder of the games, then RAC should be fireed for not putting him in sooner. That won't happen anyhow.RAC will be gone at season's end. I'd even volunteer to help him move. The players don't play hard for him,so I sure as hell wouldn't work hard for him.
Indecision may,or maynot,be my problem

I think Schottenheimer is a natural choice here. Could probably be convinced to keep Chud too since he worked under Schottenheimer before.
Has Marty ever asked for total control anywhere or has he always worked under the coach-GM paradigm?
Obviously, he would have to like Savage and the direction of this team, but I would love to see him back here.

I am going to throw this out, don't hate just listen. I would like to see us get a Head Coach like a Mike Holgrem or somebody like Jeff Fisher. But I do not think that will happen. Why not go after a Quality college coach like an Urban Meyer he took programs over at Bowling Green, Utah and Florida and turned them all into contenders. Even though most people think that if you are a college coach you can not coach in the NFL, However that is false coachs like Jimmy Johnson with the Miami Hurricanes won several national championships and also with the Dallas Cowboy's Superbowls. Also I seem to remember one great college coach in the state of Ohio who coached the Buckeyes and our beloved Browns. Thats right Paul Brown. It may be something to think about.

He stinks....why in the hell would we want to do that??
Top 10 college jobs are way better than any NFL job. By far....for lots of reasons.
Florida is easily a top 5 job......you don't leave those unless asked to leave..

Just clicking on you Peen.
When was the last time the Browns actually hired an established NFL coach with a proven track record?
Marty was a young DC when promoted. Bud Carson was a proven DC when hired. Shofner, Palmer, Davis, Rutigliano, Gregg, Skorich, Collier? In all these years, the only consistently winning coaches this team have had have been Paul Brown, Blanton Collier, and Marty Shottenheimer. That's just not going to cut it.
I realize that former head coaches are former head coaches for a reason, but for once I'd love to see an experienced guy here, be it Marty, Cohwer, Billick, etc, but I think we need someone who will not make or accept excuses and/or mediocrity.
If we fire Crennell, there's some good talent here. I don't think a total rebuild is necessary, but I think a total change of dedication and attitude are a must.
There may be people who have more talent than you, but there's no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do. -Derek Jeter

I rarely post in threads like these, because it's not really my style.
However, our entire staff should be fired.
Last night's game was pathetic. My little sister could tackle better. We had TWO players who really came to play last night and one is older/slower than the players he was defending. When Rogers went down I almost burst into tears.
The lack of Harrison, the pass plays on 2nd,3rd AND 4th and 1 with timeouts remaining was some of the worst play calling I've seen in my entire life.
I don't know if the Cowher rumors are true (whether Lerner called him or not) but for the sake of our club, I sure hope so.

don't mean to scare you, but Billy Donovan sure came awfully close to leaving what is probably a top15 college bball job for the NBA.
and Urban Meyer is an Ohio boy. just like most successful college coaches (stoops, tressel, les miles, et cetera)

cowher is easily the most coveted HC out there. this team would be foolish not to go after him even if the team didn't look this bad.
this is a team ripe to have a defense remade in his image, with a young offense already in place.
cleveland dream team....
cowher HC with mooch as OC/quarterback coach.
just one man's dream.

History also shows that the Cleveland Browns organization lacks leadership and is prone to startling knee-jerk decisions.
I guess if you define four years and no playoff appearances as knee jerk.
I think the Quinn start was knee-jerk...not the idea of starting him, but how that decision was reached. The same goes for the Collins situation, and the Winslow suspension and the pulling of Frye...most of our decisions tend to be rash. Again, not the decisions themselves, but how they came to be.
How that decision was reached????????
For at LEAST 3 WEEKS prior to him getting the nod we were told that DA was on a short leash and BQ was on high alert status to "get ready."
It wasn't a whim they just thought of all of a sudden while watching film.

It is widely believed that this is not in Jim Tressel's dreams. It might be a logical career path move, but unless I were to hear it from him directly, I doubt he would be stupid enough to even consider this, the way things are today,...as in deference to the way players were in Paul Brown's day.

Comparing a current college coach (any current college coach) taking over the Browns to Paul Brown doing it around 60 yrs ago doesn't fly. Back then the college and pro games were much more similar than they ae now. That just isn't the case anymore.
The obvious candidate to take over is Cowher. Tough guy who can infuse the type of attitude that this team needs. He has had a successful career and understands the importance of the Browns-steelers rivalry. I always thought this was a big RAC flaw. In his mind Browns-steelers was just another game. In that he was flat out wrong.
But when it comes to Cowher the ball is in his court. 1st he has to want to come back. 2nd he will have multiple suitors and he would have to pick us. So the question isn't who should be our next head coach. The question is who should be our next head coach if Cowher turns down our offer.
A guy I would definitely have on my short list is Mike Munchak oline coach for the Titans. He is coming from a quality organization. He is probably the best oline coach in the NFL. He coaches like he played - all out, taking crap from nobody.

As long as we're thinking OL-types, I would consider Cardinals Asst Head Coach/OL Coach, Russ Grimm. He would bring some Cowher attitude since he was a Steeler assistant (if we can't get Cowher), plus a little Redskins/Hogs mentality.
Then again, I'm not so sure Cowher would turn down the Browns' gig. He started here as a player, coached here under Marty, and wanted the HC job when Carson left. He would have former teammates, friends, and associates, around for support - along with a fine resume - and it would bring his career "full-circle". It might be just what the doctor ordered for Bill, now that his family is grown up. Maybe he and his wife would welcome some familiar surroundings for one last run at some glory.

If we're taking anyone from the Giants, give me Steve Spagnuolo. He's been part of both the Eagles and Giants, two winning organizations.

I'll repost mine from September 25th when I threw in Romeo's towel on his tenure....with appropriate updates as a couple things have changed.
Here are the options as I see them.
1. Established Coach with great track record (Cowher or Holmgren)
The problem is if you bring in either of these 2 guys they are going to want significant control of the FO. I personally like the job Phil Savage is doing and would hate to see him compromised by a new coach.
2. Ex-HC
The benefits are that the guy you hire will be more experienced and may have learned to be a better HC from his last failure. Or, his last failure might not have been that bad. I am just completely underwhelmed by the guys available.
Here are the top guys around:
Jim Fassel - Look back at the superbowl (not just winners) coaches from the last 20 years. Fassel, Cowher and possibly Holmgren are the only options that are not retired or still coaching their team. I still remember those Giants teams playing down to their competition and being undisciplined (why they brought in Coughlin). He might be a decent option, but he's not my style of coach.
Marty Schottenheimer - Ok, winning 10 games and losing our first playoff game every year actually doesn't sound so bad right now. But, with his increasing age and limited assistant coaching staff (most of his preferred assistants are pretty locked in where they are at), I would not be the biggest fan of this move.
Gregg Williams - didn't really get a fair shake in Buffalo. I would be happy with him, but I fear too many would see him as another Romeo hire (career DC, older guy, very loyal to players).
Jim Haslett - This is just a pre-emptive move. The Saints were among the worst organized teams when he was in charge and the Rams defense was falling apart until he became the head coach. Stay away, do not invite him into Ohio unless we are playing his team. Not that it matters, looks like he'll have the Rams job.
3. Elevate Top Assitant Coach
I prefer this method as I would rather have a guy who has earned his spot at HC rather than someone who has obvious flaws or who has failed as a HC before.
Offensive guys: Rick Dennison (Broncos), Mike Munchak (Titans), Andy Heck (Jaguars)
It is not a coincidence that all 3 offensive guys here are or have been OL coaches. OL coaches have to understand both the offense and defense as well as any other position (one could argue with QB). These 3 coaches all lead hard-nosed, disciplined units. I would discount Dennison a bit though because I think our OL would struggle to convert to a Denver-style zone blocking system.
Defensive guys: Jim Schwartz, Rex Ryan, Jim Johnson, Steve Spagnuolo (giants)
Spagnuolo gets the most out of his guys regardless of injuries (last year secondary or this year DL). His schemes are extremely impressive to mask his teams weaknesses.
Jim Johnson would be a fun guy to have, but I think he might be wired best as an assistant (mad scientist type of guy...sort of like the defensive Mike Martz).
Rex Ryan is another guy who gets the most out of his players. And you would have to assume Phil would know if he would have a good working relationship with him or not from their time in Baltimore. Oh, and we would be weakening a division rival.
Jim Schwartz - Is there a more disciplined group in the NFL than the Titans defense the past few years?
My favorites right now would be either of the Titans assistants (Munchak or Schwartz). I feel Fischer runs an incredible organization and we could reap some of the subsidiary benefits by bringing them aboard.
After them Spagnuolo and Rex Ryan would be my next choices.

I keep seeing Holmgren's name pop up. That's never going to happen. He's allready stated he's going to retire at the end of this year. They've allready named Jim Mora Jr. the next head coach. Holmgren announced his retirement LAST year, which is why Mora was brought in.

agreed. i don't see us having any chance of getting Holmgren...but he technically is out there (because even as he is retiring, his contract is also ending, so he could go somewhere else if he changed his mind)

Because of the natural ties to Savage and his winning track record.
Having said that, I think many don't put his name on the lists because we simply don't want him I know I wouldn't want him as our HC. He's one of the smartest coaches in the league, but he's also somewhat underhanded. Despite the success, he has a horrid track record with QB's.
WHEN Crennel gets fired, Billick's name will be mentioned. I just hope we don't consider him.

Please no Billick. I'd rather us take a chance on another college coach like Ferentz, Stoops, or Meyer instead of muppet man. Get Cowher in here. I don't care what it costs, neither should Randy Lerner.... if he really wants this team to improve that is. At least with Cowher this team won't quit come the 4th quarter and play like a bunch of pansies. I'd like to see Edwards and Winslow try their egotistical BS with Cowher.

Dude's got a Superbowl ring and knows how to beat Pittsburgh.

partially because he rebuffed us in the past (he was supposedly our first choice in the rumor mill for awhile, but wouldn't even take an interview)
partially because he was the face of Baltimore when we came back...which ratcheted up the hatred
partially because he was a Denny Green disciple
partially because outside of one magical year, he was not good in the playoffs.
partially because he comes off so arrogant that he turns off people from the start
So, yeah, he has his good qualities, but it's not like he's a slam dunk choice either (like some believe Cowher is...I have my doubts as he won't have his top assistants to choose from).
And do we really want our top2 choices to be Cowher and Billick? Just doesn't seem right.

What held them back was Billick's inability to find a QB. Well...let's assume Brady Quinn is our guy. Problem solved.

I also wouldn't mind seeing Billick here. And I think it's a easy choice considering his ties to Savage. Say what you want about him, but he was a very successful coach.
He wouldn't be my first choice or even preferred, but I wouldn't feel the trepidation many are proclaiming if he is the guy. I think he'd get this turned around.

Billick is an arrogant ass. Good football guy? Pretty much. But his personality is that of an ass. Watch one of his weekly press conferences and you'd be begging to hear the common sense of Romeo Crennel again.
He carries himself like an ass, has the body language and facial expressions of an ass, talks like an ass. And did I mention he's an ass?

I can't find the post or thread, so I will add it here....
I think you separate Romeo and Savage a bit too much.
We just gave Romeo a extension.
At some point, do you think Phil and Randy sat down to discuss the matter before the extension was offered?
In your scenario, it sounds like you think Lerner was the one to think the extension was warranted......in which case, you would be correct....Savage will be given a pass.
My thinking is Savage is the one to push the extension....in which case, he is tied to Romeo, and it is his coach.
If that be the case...Phil is standing on thin ice with a 400 lb man just a few feet away.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

Personally I so not want Billick as head coach. But here is my Billick question. Would you accept him as an offensive coordinator?
As O-coordinator with the Vikings he did a great job. Especially with Randell Cunningham, a physical talent who needed someone to do the thinking for him. As a coordinatior he could focus on the offense which he does a good job with as long as he doesn't have all those other HC responsibilities. Also as coordinatior he wouldn't be the face of the team. Downside, we would need a HC who is already well established (Cowher, Marty) because you don't want a new 1st time coach looking over his shoulder.

Billick won't take an OC job. His resume is too good for it.
I've never seen so many people so against a coach with a Superbowl ring as a HEAD coach...and he has JUST as many as Cowher.
I also have never seen so many people against a coach who knows how to beat Pittsburgh.

Some of you guys are funny, you complain because RAC doesn't show emotion, and when a guy (Billick) shows emotion you say you don't want him because of it. You can't have it both ways....

It's not that he shows emotion. Gratham showed emotion and was liked (up into he went after Crennel).
Billick is an arrogant ass. That is why some of us don't want him.
I didn't want people like Romanowski and TO. They were both great. I like more then ability in my coaches and players.
Also, Billick was suppose to be an offensive genius. He never had a decent offense. He always had a great defense. Maybe we should be looking at some of his DCs instead.

He never had a good offense because he didn't have a good quarterback or any good receivers.
