what we need is a scare tactic. we need to convince the US and US automakers that something about poor gas mileage, like co2, is bad for the earth, like global warming. then car companies will produce cars that get better gas mileage, and produce less c02. People will in turn buy these cars because they feel they are better for the environment and their wallet. WOOPS, we missed the boat on that one

Two sections jumped out at me after reading the article: Quote:
Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill have a message for Detroit's major automakers: Show us a plan for restructuring and (maybe) we'll show you the money.
and
Quote:
The chief executives of the Big Three, as well as UAW President Ron Gettelfinger, have spent the last two days on Capitol Hill trying to convince lawmakers that bankruptcy is not an option. Gettelfinger again Thursday called on Congress and the Bush administration to act immediately.
The first one made me have goosebumps. Awesome! You aren't just getting a loan that you may not pay back. Show us how you'll fix your business AND how you'll pay us back....and then maybe we'll talk. Alright Uncle Sam!
And the second one had me wonder, how much are these four guys worth? I bet they and a few other people around their level in each organization have enough to bail one of the companies out themselves (well, not GM....they're screwed). They've been reaping GIGANTIC salaries and watching as the ship sinks for year.....and when the economy drops they claim they didn't plan for it and now want help.
If you're too stupid to see that the economy can dip and raise from time to time, you shouldn't be in charge of a company.

BINGO
In a way I agree.....but face it, if the banks don't work, for sure nothing else does.
I agree, we should have done that too, and started a thread explaining the deal but the refs merged it into a thread about a comedians take.

The Banks are not working now. We are getting people in here with 25 percent debt to income, who never missed a payment on their house, car, or credit cards, and the idiots are turning them down for loans

True enough.......consumer credit is the last to get helped...
We have some challenging times ahead. The bubble we have been riding on for 50 years is losing air quickly.
I better go out and get another 100 lbs of rice and 100 cans of tuna and spam while it is still on the shelf.

I like those....just no sure if they store all that well.
I want stuff that can store for several years.....I know, some people call me nuts, but I see food shortages and all sorts of problems.
Everybody needs to start building a 1 year pantry....I assume we will still be able to get water...people grew food during the depression as many still lived on farms....that isn't the case today.
Worst thing that happens if things don't go south, you have a bunch of rice, beans and what not you are going to have to eat over a year or two....rice and beans...shoot, those are Bubba Gump staples....you can cook those 500 different ways.
Fried Spam sandwichs aren't that bad....big slice of tomato and onion on top.....shoot...that's a Alabama Steak sandwich as my Granddad called them.

And if people are losing thier homes,, you know, the ones with pantrys in them,, where do you suggest they store that 1 year supply of food... under the detroit-superior bridge in a refrig box?

fortunatly for me, I have one to go to... some folks don't.. and many more will be in that boat if the big three go down for the count.
But like you say, maybe that's what we need.. maybe it will be considered a clean out by those in 40 or more years... and no, I ain't laughing at that prospect.
