Where else can you go to talk about the Browns with other fans? You cant walk into BW3's or most bars and really talk in depth Browns football on a consistent basis. Its no fun and frustrating to talk to people at work, or family members that essentially have no clue. Its about as fun as watching sportscenter.
However this board gives access to people who are in the know, and all about the the same common hobby....football.
I think its a fun thing to do, to get into heated discussions, to hash out issues with the Browns. To do with other fans that care enough to take time out of their life to discuss the Browns, is a great hobby. I enjoy reading debates, learning some stuff from people who know more than I do, and just the overall stimulation of football analysis by rabid fans like me.
It would be no different if you met me in real life than on here, very opinionated, probably too emotional, and somebody who likes to debate anything and everything.
Its a great board, I probably rub most the wrong way, some think I'm a fool...but I enjoy everyones footballs takes.
Everyone takes it too seriously at times...I guess that comes along with the passion of Browns fans...who take football more seriously than anybody.

This is a very cool thread. It was a pleasure to read every single post before even thinking about adding something. I'm here for the same reason that shep mentioned: I was just blown away to discover a message board populated by Browns fans. At the time I was so computer illiterate that I didn't even know such a thing existed- for ANY subject. The first night I found it, I stayed up until 4:00 AM... and from that day, I was hooked. I come to get what everyone else seems to want- more football knowledge, more football talk, and to hang with fellow Browns fans. I'm a very different fan of the Browns now, because I've learned so much from so many. When I post, I tend to do it one of 2 ways: If a particular post makes me think, or elicits an emotional response from me, I'll take some time to think about it, then post one of my dreary, tiresome epics, and try to treat it sort of like an Op-Ed. On those occasions, I like to cover as many angles as I can, and be as thorough as possible, so that anyone reading will get exactly what I'm thinking. Explain yourself once fairly well, and you don't have to "chew your cabbage twice." Other times, I'll drop a quick one in a thread to acknowledge a post that I agree with, but really can't add to... or to give a gentle poke in fun when someone's post strikes me as funny... or to ask someone for clarification on a point they've made... things lke that. My post count isn't one of the highest, but I've probably banged as many, if not more keystrokes than your average HOF'er. IRL, I'm fairly easy-going. If I disagree with someone, I'll try to do it without being disagreeable. On rare occasions, I can really get up a head of steam. If I cross the line, I'm usually pretty embarrassed by it, and won't hesitate to offer an apology. I'm not really good at holding grudges for too long, either- takes too much effort, and I'm pretty lazy. And lastly- It feels like a real community here. Perhaps it's because so many posters really do represent themselves on here as they truly are. Not many posturers or poseurs, so we all get a chance to know each other a little, if we want to. That's kinda cool... and I'm glad to feel like I'm a part of it. This is a very cool thing that we all have here.

The way I type on here is pretty much the way you'd hear me talking. I take very few things in life seriously, so I always try to throw in jokes or little smart aleck comments.
But, like 337 said earlier, I absolutely love talking with people from around the world about the Browns, but also about life, politics, etc. It's like you said 'Toad, it's like being at a sportsbar.
Now, I treat my close friends a lot differently than people here, but that's just because busting somebody's chops comes off a little different on a message board. We do it so much to each other that we've had people say to us "geez, do you guys really hate each other that much?" But, we don't tolerate it one bit if someone from outside of our group gives us a hard time.
We all bash each other on here a bit, but when someone from another team comes on and starts talking smack, we back each other up for the most part.
So, it's really like a large group of friends. We have our arguments and stupid little tiffs, but in the end, we know we're all Browns fans and that keeps us all together.

What do people honestly try and get out of all this?
I'm like you, I don't live in a Browns market so I have to work to get Browns news and this is a much more enjoyable place to do that than just reading article after article in from the Browns website, the Plain Dealer on-line, or ESPN.com... You get the article and a whole bunch of opinions and discussion.
Add to that the general news, political debate, social issues discussion, draft talk, etc... It would take me hours and hours to actually seek out and read all of the information I get just by leaving this up on my computer and it wouldn't be nearly as much fun.
As for how I act... I'm generally myself in here, highly opinionated but I am more likely to voice my opinion in here than I would be in person, especially on more controversial political and social issues... and I'm extremely sarcastic and sometimes in here, just like in life, I go too far... and I try to apologize if something I said is taken incorrectly or out of context.
How should everybody act... well I think because it's a message board and you can't really judge body language or voice inflexion, I think most people (myself included) would be well served to try to understand what people are saying before they jump on a select few words or fly off the handle when they missed the point... asking questions works well, like, "Am I reading this wrong or are you saying...... " Seeking clarity before flying off the handle is something we all should do..

What do I get out of this board????? Like you overtoad, I'm nowhere near Browns fans because of where I live (that I know of) so this is my way of talking about the team – and "listening" to other people talk about the team. I get a few laughs here by what others say, I amuse myself with fabulous witticisms, but I sure as hell don't get my ego stroked. Not like some of YOU guys. Mostly though, I'm here for the Browns.

One thing about the message board i find intresting is how many people EXPECT others to think & agree with them just becuase they said or believe something, it's incredible, 90% of the time we havent even met this person and they expect us to agree, than if we dont agree or god forbid have an opinon ....katie bar the door, we get unleashed upon, becuase were idiots, I find that thinking by other amusing.
Another amusing aspect of this board is the clicks, people develop a idea of who you are if they havent met ya and that determines if your posts are read or taken seriously, along with your opinons. If you belong to that click than your listened to, if not your opinon is passed over but not discussed or taken seriously. I do find this amusing. Dosent bother me, my ego isnt determined by a message board.
Overall I'd have to say there is alot of good people on this board and were all wanting the same thing BROWNS WINS, it's amazing how others see or feel about a game or a play, or a situation and how they would handle it compared to the FO. But it's always easier making desisions whewn you have nothing to lose, or spend money when it's not your, most of what we comment on are things that have happened and it's alot easier to comment on the probelm afdter the fact than it is to make a diciddion before it happens.

That is something I find amusing also. It doesnt just go for us posters though. It also applies to every sportswriter, broadcaster, announcer, anchor. It is amazing how all these people that are idiots because they say something that someone doesnt agree with are idiots.

That's pretty much human nature. I find it amusing that people have such thin skin that if someone does disagree with them they think they are being viciously attacked. It's laughable.

I've heard this since these boards started and I think it's a giant load of crap. I think it often comes from insecure people who somehow don't feel like they belong to these mythical little groups. But it is B.S.

I know, where has lamp been?? Anyway, I'm pretty much the same silly, sarcastic bich that I am here. Though, on here, I will actually be more blunt with you than if I'm in person, I think part of that is the relative anonimity of posting here. Though, I screwed that up by meeting many of you losers (sarcasm, well for most, there were a few losers in the bunch). I just view this as a very dysfunctional family. We may all disagree on a variety of topics, but, in the end, we're a family (Browns fans) with a few screwball cousins (christyk, OnB etc) thrown in as well.

Being in England this is the ONLY place I get to read about my Browns. I read everyday - without fail .... I rarely post simply because I don't have alot to add This board and the old board were the reason I finally made it over to Cleveland last year. I flew alone, and stayed alone, in the Holiday Inn and spent 10 days in total in Cleveland. My friends thought I was mad! but I came over for the first two games of last season v Cinci and v Pitts the whole experience was amazing. When I landed on the Friday evening I went out to the Boneyard bar .... alone but not for long ended up going to a Killers concert with a group of guys and girls I had just met. Wherever I went in Cleveland I always felt safe and was welcomed big time! You really love that English accent I tailgated at DTI and met alot of posters who really made me feel welcome. Went out with a few during the week and made some really good friends. I havent made it over this year but I will be back next year so looking forward to catching up with you all again

I wouldn't call them cliques, but after a while you get a feeling for peoples styles, and as in every interaction we have, those previous encounters affect the way you approach someone.
Over time, we get to know a general stance that most posters hold on issues, and for some their personalities come across on the board. (ie: IronChest) For those of us that have never met face to face, the written words are all we have to judge you by. Would that mean that I wouldn't talk to certain people or enjoy their company in real life? No, may not like the way a person posts or acts on the board, but face to face it's a clean slate.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

Glad you had such a good time.
Despite what the French* say about us, we Yanks can be a pretty hospitable bunch.
BTW- how'd you end up a Browns fan way over there? -Was it through Aston Villa?

EnglishDawg has been around way longer than the Villa thing with Lerner. LimeyDawg used to hang around the boards but, not this particular one. It's been a while since I've seen him around. He visited our group several times from England and stayed with a number of board members. He was a lot of fun and always had a great time here.
Anybody heard from Limey?

Cheap entertainment. You guys are better than cable TV. It's a quick easy way to fill the gaps in the day.You can hang out for a couple of minutes or hours if you want. I'm always interested in the Browns. I can add my 2 cents and if/ when I say something stupid, so what. It's all on Illegalmoe. Who in their right mind would take anything Illegalmoe says seriously anyway? It's good fun with no down side that I can think of.

I 'adopted' the Browns when I was at school in the mid 80s - when we were actually good!? It has just grown form there really. Going over to Cleveland to watch my Browns was always something I had wanted to do .... now just looking forward to coming back and partying some more!

j/c Nobody really comes across on a message board like they do in person. Maybe to one extent or another, but not exactly. I've met quite a few who post on here. Some were very close to what I imagined and some were quite a contrast to what I'd imagined. Trying to predict that is difficult. I've found some very interesting things about message boards though. Once I meet someone in person, I feel I get to know them. And I realise that their existance on a message board is a personna, to one extent or another. Just like Babe mentioned she's more blunt than she would be in person. So I am fully aware that the personna on a message board is not who or what someone is in "real life". And I give the person, not the personna credit for what that person truely is. Because a message board is an outlet. You can play Devil's advocate, be more of a smart ass or whatever it is you wish to do. It's a pass time, a hobby. Not real life. I think it's when people take a person's personna over what they have found , in real life, a person to be, that they are taking message boards far too seriously. Not that I really give a damn. Because if someone takes a message board so seriously to consider it over the reality of who a person really is? That's their own personal demon to deal with. Not mine.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.
