1.) Jim Shoffner 2.) Bud Carson LOL seriously, I want an aggressive, experienced head coach, Someone who comes in with respect, has been a success in this league, young enough to build a dynasty and be enshrined as a Browns Coach after many postseason births and SuperBowls.
Bill Cowher is the only coach for this franchise at this stage...We need the stability and faith in knowing he knows how to get the job done and is dping the right thing and making the right moves. Open up the pocket book Randy and pay the man, it will make your life easier and in a time of risky investing, it is almost sure to be a positive one.

In this comment refering to Cowher I'm simply not sure.
While I think he'll make the team stronger, I believe he is liable to retire at any season. He left the Steelers because he wanted time off. I think he's looking for time off. Do I want to pay the guy 9 million dollars for a season, and then have to go through the hiring process again?
I hope we can find someone good. I really do like Romeo, but he simply isn't preparing or motivating our guys to play on Sundays. The talent is certainly there, they just aren't showing up.
So yeah, I'm not sure who I want to hire, but I dunno about Cowher. Some people have mentioned Urban Meyer. I find that interesting, Marty sounds interesting too. Same with Rex Ryan. I'd even consider Mike Nolan.
Cowher seems like we're selling out, and he could easily coach for a year and leave. I want continuity. Romeo got four years. That's fair. I want to be able to give our next coach at least four years as well. i don't think that Cowher would coach for four years...........

I'd also love to hire Pioli. He would correct this organization immediately and hire many of the people we need to turn this operation around.
If Andy Reid gets fired, I'd love to hire him too. Reid's good.

He stated at the time that he wanted to be with his daughters before they went off to college..spend more time with the family if you will. I'm sure when you put as much time a day into a job as Cowher and most NFL coaches do..you feel as if you missed something.

If Wade Phillips is fired and we have the opportunity to bring him in as a DC under Schottenheimer, then I'd pass on Cowher in a heartbeat. Especially considering how much he's been said to enjoy the studio life, as it'll be that much easier for him to leave coaching a second time.

Yeah, those first three "experiments" went SO WELL let's just keep following THAT game plan!

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Jester, thanks for posting that. I was wondering why nobody had brought up Casserly yet. He got run out of town for giving Schaub a big contract and drafting Mario Williams over Reggie Bush and Vince Young. Schaub's made Kevin Walter look like a borderline pro bowler when he's played and Williams and Ryans are arguably the two best defensive players from that draft. Obviously, Pioli would be target number one, but I think Casserly should get a lot of consideration as well.

I'd settle for a Pioli/McDaniels combo. Josh is a local with a good O mind and has a great coaching father.

With his bad grammar and unnecessary sarcastic tone, he's stating only Martz and Cowher have previous NFL head coaching experience on your top 5. The rest would be going into their first stint, and would be what he declares an "experiment", going with the likes of Romeo Crennel, Butch Davis, and Chris Palmer.

it would be a repeat of when we hired Crennel. But maybe it would guarantee us drafting Maualuga... We MUST get that guy. And also Clint Sintim. Then we wouldn't need Lewis or Suggs and Scott.

Cowher tells Browns he's not interested; Pioli to be interviewed for GM position by Mary Kay Cabot Monday December 29, 2008, 10:39 AM BEREA - Browns owner Randy Lerner said today that former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher told him he was not interested in joining the Browns. Lerner met with the media this morning to announce that Romeo Crennel has been fired as head coach. Speculation for his replacement had been centered on Cowher for several weeks, but Lerner said Monday that he met with Cowher on Saturday night and that Cowher said he would not return to coaching in 2009 and asked Lerner to take him off the Browns list of candidates. Cowher told Lerner that he was comfortable with his lifestyle in North Carolina at this time. Lerner said he's already asked for permission to talk to New England Patriots Executive Vice President Scott Pioli and that he'll focus on the general manager role next. Lerner also said he's receiving permission to talk to another unnamed NFL exec. He appeared interested when informed that Eric Mangini had been fired by the New York Jets this morning. Mangini, a former Browns employee, worked with Pioli in New England. Crennel, 61, was fired after going 24-40 in his four seasons at Browns head coach. He had three years left on his contract, which had been extended in January after he guided the Browns to a 10-6 record and just missed the playoffs. But things fell apart this season, starting with injuries to several key players, including quarterback Derek Anderson and wide receiver Braylon Edwards, both Pro Bowl performers the previous season. Midway through the season Crennel benched Anderson in favor of Brady Quinn, but the struggles continued, especially after Quinn suffered a broken finger that ended his season. Anderson returned and promptly suffered a season-ending knee injury. With Ken Dorsey and free agent Bruce Gradkowski at quarterback, the Browns failed to scored an offensive touchdown over the final six games, establishing an NFL record, and finished with 4-12, marking the fifth time in the past six years that they had at least 10 losses. Throughout the season Browns players voiced their support of Crennel. Crennel came to the Browns after several seasons as defensive coordinator for the New England Patriots under Bill Belichick. He has been part of five Super Bowl championships with the Patriots and New York Giants. http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2008/12/cowher_tells_browns_hes_not_in.html

I never thought Cowher would come here. But he's going to have to act fast , since all these other teams are going to be going after the top names.

Same here. The fact that Cowher didn't want to go anywhere to coach should help soothe the hurt of the Cowher '09 fans.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

I'm not surprised at all that Cowher said 'nope'. Every report indicated he was happy with what he's doing.

OK, so no Cowher.
My question is, if we don't land Pioli, then who is another good candidate for GM?
Is Marty ready for such a position?
If the Tuna gets out of Miami, would he stay at another team for more than a year?

Im not sure Pioli is the answer either. I mean, we all know that Belichick is the key to the success in NE. So, what is it that Pioli brings to the table that is actually him and not Belichick?
Same goes for Mangini and as it turns out, it went for RAC also..
As far as I"m concerned, the only guy that has has success from the NE tree is the guy that ended up in Atlanta... and it's only been one year so far. Mangini looked pretty good for one year also.
I'm probably over reacting a little, but I'm thinking I wanna stay away from that NE Tree all together.

I just tried to post this over at the main site and it was deleted. I will no longer continue to post there.
I, for one, am really relieved. I have to admit that I was intrigued by the sight of that dude spitting all over himself on our sideline, holding every player responsible for even the slightest misstep or poor decision. It is a prescence that we really haven't had in a long time. I think that is why so many of us have been pining away for him.
But lets put this into perspective.
Not to take anything away from the guy, but he was their head coach for a very long time before they won. I realize that they were very successful during his tenure, but he is no magic bullet. He wouldn't come in and magically transform the Browns a la Miami next year. This underscore the importance of fan patience for ANY HC who inherits this mess. We have to allow the incoming regime some time. If it happens quicker, great. But he needs to have some length to the leash.
Also, I think our immeasurable futility here has made us a little light-headed. This guy has been at the helm of our most hated rivals in our franchise history. I can honestly say that I felt genuine hatred for this guy and his team over the last couple of decades. Now, was it "real" hate? Of course not. It was "sports" hate - a powerful form of hate but not the all-time official kind. I would NEVER be completely comfortable seeing this guy on our sideline. I want a guy who can buy into this rivalry and become as completely devoted to totally humiliating the Stoolers so that all he can do, day in and day out is game plan against them. Cowher will be indicted into the Hall as a Stooler. We want that on our sideline?
We have been suffering through such embarrassment and humiliation that, I believe, we have become indifferent to the very thing this guy embodies that we hate. The Stoolers. If and when we ever beat them, and he was the HC, they would say things like "it took a Stealer to beat us." You KNOW they would.
No. No thanks, Mr Cowher. I don't want a guy who has your bagage. It's a deal breaker for me. If you were gung ho for the job, I might feel a teeny, tiny bit better. But you have said in no uncertain terms that you would not accept the position. The way I see it, you are taking the professional course of basically saying, "I wouldn't coach you guys if you were the last team on Earth." And that's fine. I would expect that. You are the face of the Stoolers. More like a proud grandfather. I can totally respect that.
You don't belong in Cleveland. You still have much love for your team. That's fine. But if we were to bring this guy here, while his team was currently a team that I for one, totally hate, would be too wierd.
I am glad to put the Cowher speculation to bed and count myself glad to see our traditions intact. It is, after all, the only thing we have at the moment.

I'm glad the speculation is over too. I thought there was a chance he could come here, but I did NOT want him here. I hated see him smiling on the sidelines while the Browns got slaughtered time after time by the Steelers...

You mentioned Dmitroff (guy thats in Atlanta now). I looked up a little info on him and found this:
New England Patriots Vice President-Player Personnel Scott Pioli was instrumental in teaching Dimitroff the value of systemic specific scouting, where importance is placed on knowing the proper needs of your team and scouting players to fit the coaches systems. Pioli holds his scouts to very high expectations and his communication skills throughout every level of an organization was impressive to Dimitroff. Dmitroff
I like the sound of this much better than what Savage was supposedly doing.

It's kinda like grabbing at straws with the NE Tree.. I'm just thinking that I'd rather go after a Russ Grimm in Arizona.. if we are going for a HC.. Floyd Reese is a winner for GM,, or if you could talk Ernie Arcorsi to come back to help build something that he can then turn over as he did wth the Giants,, that would be cool.
Ron Wolf is another guy that is one of those that could come in and build something to turn over to a hand picked successor.
I don't think we need to be hanging on everything that the Pats do or those that were or are employed by them.
We gotta cast a wider net... JMO however

I think in order for it to be a rivalry, both sides need to buy in... we are just easy pickings for the Steelers, not rivals. Just saying.
I never really felt that Cowher would legitimately come here, but I wouldn't have had any objections.

You never know if you don't ask and I do hand it to Lerner for clearing Cowher off the wish list before the season is even over.
I respect Cowher's decision and do believe one sentence is very telling as far as Cowher's future desires...
"Cowher told Lerner that he was comfortable with his lifestyle in North Carolina at this time."
It sounds like Cowher wants to stay where he is located now and if an opportunity to coach a team near would open up, he may be interested.
