I think without getting involved with all the numbers the cap would have to be at least $100million. there were 11 teams that had payroll with at least $100 million last year. to go below this number isn't feasible. my questions with a cap, is what would the larger market teams do with their excess revenue?? even if the cap is at say, $100million, the yanks would still have plenty in the bank account. do they just pocket the money?? is that good for baseball, if a club was pocketing money that could be used to sign players??
everything is shared in the nfl except for club suites revenue which is why teams want stadiums filled with corporate seats. should all revenue be shared in baseball down the middle. that's the only way where you could have a true cap, and make it fair, is if the money is shared.the marlins, rays, or indians would never be able to even spend the entire cap, unless they received ginormous revenue handouts via the large market teams.
I don't know the exact number but I would bet the yankees generate anywhere between 7-10% of all baseball revenue. when you have a team generate that much from their team, it's a tough sell to them and their fanbase, to give a majority of it up to other teams. that's what would have to happen if you want a true cap. I just don't agree with that line of opinion.
If it was up to me I would contract the marlins, rays, royals, A's and pirates. 5 less teams in the league to support. that would make the twins with the lowest payroll at $62 million.

Doesn't matter what the number is,, just find a number and make them stick to it.. No penalties for going over... Like in Football, you can't go over the cap. PERIOD.
I only say this because if you look at what the Yanks have done recently it's kinda crazy.. they spent over 800 million for almost 8 years out on just 4 guys. Granted, High quality guys, but still, just 4 guys.
So a cap would be the right thing to establish,, how to do it is certainly up for debate.
They might get a WS out of it,, maybe more than one.. or they could implode with the weight of that many egos.. and it could get worse if all of those 4 guys don't perform up to expectations.
To me, it seems like a giant blunder to blow that much dough on players. but hey,,, my name isn't stienbrenner either.

Dude, first off - Merry Christmas!
Come on man. We're talking about baseball here. I'm giving you concrete info to supporst my argument that baseball cannot consider itself a a sport anymore, and your response to me is "What about football" - Weak.
