I wonder, and I'm just thinking out loud here, how much all the Cowher hype in the media the last several weeks and with the fans, negatively affected his decision.

A, why would I want to be a part of that? type thing.

As for the Jets. I don't think it was a given, some days ago that Mangini would lose his job. Perhaps he's just seeing what's on the table there. A BIG market team, A big paycheck . . . A better chance to win another and be in the Parcells\Vermeil echelon of coaches.

It could also mean that the reports that he would never accept the Browns coaching job out of loyalty to the Rooney family were true. Some posters who said that earlier in the year took a beating as being naive, but it sure looks like they might have been right.
That was something I believed when I heard..it's why I never got on that Cowher bandwagon...he's a Steeler..

If Cowher says yes to the Jets, or anyone else for that matter he would be hated to ALMOST the extent of Fart Modell.
I certainly would hate him for life.

Not by me... as I understand it, when Cowher left the Steelers he guaranteed the Rooney family that if he returned to coaching that it would not be in the AFCN out of respect for the Steelers and the rivalries, etc......

His legacy, his success, his fame, is with the Steelers, not the Browns even though he has some history here.

If he honors his word to the Rooneys and returns to coaching but not here, then I can only respect him for that.

We say we want somebody who respects and understands the rivalries.. Cowher does. We say we want a man who is true to his word.. Cowher is.

If what I have heard is true then I'm sorry it can't work out... but best of luck Bill.

I guess my question is this: at what point did Cowher say he was going to consider the Browns gig? Or was that just something that the media threw out and the fans ate up?

Yeah, it makes him look bad if he said he doesn't want to coach anywhere in 2009 and then takes another job coaching. But he doesn't HAVE to be interested in the Browns job just because so many wanted him here.

Move on. Cowher likely isn't coming here, and likely never was coming here. We never heard anything saying he was interested. It was just media hype and fans' gullibility.

Fans would be mad at Vince Lombardi if the media had said they'd raised him from the dead and he wanted to coach here, only to find out that it wasn't true.

Sources: Cowher wants total control

Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher, who rejected a chance to become head coach of the Browns last weekend, is not going to interview for the head coaching position of the New York Jets, according to multiple sources.

Cowher, according to a source, has been contacted by the Jets. Although he is interested in the Jets job, he told the team he would not be a candidate because he would like to bring in his own personnel director. Jets owner Woody Johnson plans to keep Mike Tannenbaum as his general manager after firing Eric Mangini as head coach Monday.

With Tannenbaum as the general manager, Cowher is willing to pass on the Jets opportunity, stay in broadcasting for another year and wait to return to coaching in 2010.

Cowher has told friends the Jets job interested him for several reasons. First, Cowher would love to coach in the New York market. Second, two of his daughters are either going to school or working in the New York-New Jersey area.

Cowher does plan to coach in 2010. In 2009, though, he was only willing to return if every situation was right for him. He wanted to have a two-year break from coaching to be with family and recharge.

Last weekend, Cowher met with Browns owner Randy Lerner, who asked him what it would take financially for him to be the Browns head coach. Having a close relationship with the Rooney family in Pittsburgh and still wanting more time with the family, Cowher didn't give Lerner a price, and said no.

Cowher recently extended his contract with CBS for another season.
