Wow, that is a shocker....and that makes things a bit more interesting. A Super Bowl winning coach with proven success with an offense that was very good in bad weather is now available. I would think he'd be interested in coming to Cleveland considering is infatuation with former Browns players
Seriously, this could be very interesting to look at.
Two guys I contemplated gettin' the axe...
Gruden...Pending??? Shanahan
I take Shan's every day of the week...LOVE THIS DUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go Browns!!!

Yep he was running the full show in Denver but he wont get that opportunity again. Teams just arent building that way anymore.

I for one am not one for another first time head coach...I cant say Shanahan makes me tingle but I think a proven coaching commodity is what is needed.
I know everybody wants a superbowl...but in all reality we havent performed respectably consistently.
I hope we give him al ook

Shanahan would fix the offense.
But the defense would become far, far worse.
He knows offensive talent.
If all you care about is scoring touchdowns he's your man.
I want a defensive coach that has experience. Heck, even Gunther Cunningham would be fine to me.

I'm with you on preferring a HC that has successful experience...
Shanahan was successful with John Elway.. since then, not so much. So how much was Elway and how much was Shanahan.. I don't know that answer.
What I do know is that Elway had two coaches in the NFL and what they have in common is that Elway got them both to the Superbowl.... 5 times,,,
I'm not going to say that that is any reason NOT to interview him, Randy should, but I think he's going the younger man route... JMO however.

True, but it wouldn't improve much.
How's that?
The guy knows offense. But I think a more balanced approach should be made. Somebody who can choose a QB and stick with him (hopefully Quinn). I personally would be interested in Cunningham along with a GM. That's what I'd be after. Cunningham is a veteran coach and he did decent when he was given the HC job in KC.

I suppose the Browns season is also my fault, right?

I couldn't see Shannahan back in Oakland didn't he get fired from their and went to Denver? He hates Al davis, so I don't see that happening.
I meant if it wasn't for Al Davis. He just seems like a good fit in Oakland for some reason to me.

He was but Davis messed that up.
Speaking of other teams and though it doesn't say much but you think the Browns got it bad look at Oakland Detroit, New Orleans, Jacksonville, Dallas, and some others, these teams all had high expectations (except for maybe Detroit, but they were supposed to be better) and they are in worse shape to a degree, especially Dallas that team was annointed Super Bowl Champs and we know what happened with them.
I am just happy Lerner is being proactive and not inactive.

Only way I consider Shanahan is if he is willing to work with a GM.
If he wants total control, he can get paid somewhere else.
you had a good run Hank.

Oh... blowing a 3-game lead over your closest divisional opponent w/ 4 games left in the year, and then losing the division to said opponent in a blowout loss in the final game (and missing the playoffs, AGAIN). Not sure I'd call that a decent season...

Take it for what it's worth, Coming from Mark Scharref ESPN said he thinks Shanahan is ready to get back to the basics and just coach, he'd have a say in the draft & final 53 man roster but not total control, he wants & loves to coach, just his opinon, but it was reported. I'm sure alot of you guys heard that also.

Hopefully things from here on out are more exciting than the last handful of seasons. God help us all if we have to sit through crap like that again. Good to see you, too...and, yeah, what were all those people doing there? I didn't even recognize half of them as having been there before.

per pft so take it fwiw... rotoworld also mentions he was fired for not firing the dc... http://www.profootballtalk.com/category/rumor-mill/SHANAHAN HAS SOMETHING UP HIS SLEEVE? Posted by Mike Florio on December 30, 2008, 7:51 p.m. The immediate speculation in some league circles when word broke of the termination of long-time Broncos coach Mike Shanahan is that Shanahan has something else cooking, and that he forced his firing by refusing to agree to changes that owner Pat Bowlen wants to make. According to Jeff Legwold of the Rocky Mountain News, part of that speculation is right on the money. Per Legwold, Shanahan was fired because he refused to fire defensive coordinator Bob Slowik, whose unit surrendered 52 points in a Week Seventeen loss to the Chargers. Said Bowlen, in a release issued by the team: “After giving this careful consideration, I have concluded that a change in our football operations is in the best interests of the Denver Broncos. This is certainly a difficult decision, but one that I feel must be made and which will ultimately be in the best interests of all concerned. “I appreciate the 21 years that Mike Shanahan has given to the organization as an assistant and head coach, and the two Super Bowl wins in that time. His contributions hold a special place in Broncos history.” So if Shanahan wanted to get out of town because he has something else cooking, what might it be? Believe it or not, there’s speculation that Shanahan is trying to position himself for the Chargers job. What’s that, you say? The Chargers are in the playoffs and they’ve made it clear that Norv Turner is coming back as head coach? That was our reaction, too. But a highly-placed league source suspects that something is happening with Shanahan and San Diego. In our book, it’s almost as unlikely as Shanahan coaching the Raiders. But we’ll continue to keep our eyes peeled on this one.

Sorry I have ZERO interest in Shanahan, rather have a coach who can see past his own ego. I also want a coach with a run first mentality and a tough defense who will get after the players and take no crap from them...I wanted Singletary personally.

I guess 8-8 for the Browns is worthy of a parade but other clubs expect alot more. I hope Randy gives him a look.

I see your point Denver never could run the ball and are pass happy.
Seriously I don't see Shanahan leaving the division, so I wouldn't worry too much if I was you.

If Shanny agrees to be just the HC, I'm alright with it. Unfortunately, I think he'll want control over personnel decisions like he had in Denver (which I believe was the reason he got fired -- not his coaching). We'll see...

Then we look at it from opposite ends of the spectrum. In order to give respect, it has to be earned. If not, what are you basing the respect given upon?
Just like trust IMO. I'm not saying don't "treat people with respect". Two different animals there............

What I found interesting is ESPN has a poll going right now asking if the Broncos made the right decision on firing Shanahan. When you vote they come up with a graphic of the US allowing you to see the results by state.
Overwhelmingly (62%) the rest of the country feels it was an awful decision but just as overwhelmingly (61%) Colorado feels they made the right decision.

Sounds a lot like it does around here.
Hell, some of these guys would be jumping up and down talking about how logical it would be to name Bozo the Clown HC if it happenned!
Big reaches to promote mediocrity for the sake of hope. So far that's been a losing proposition huh?

I don't know why everyone thinks that the coach having alot of say on who gets brought in is a bad thing. Everyone uses Butch davis as an example of how it doesn't work . . . WELL DUH! college coaches don't do well in the NFL no matter what kind of power they have. Dick Vermel and jimmy johnson are the only truely successful coaches to come from the college ranks, switzer doesn't count, he inhereted JJ's team.
I'll take a Superbowl winner i.e. Cowher or Shanahan, who obviously bring in decent talent when they have alot of say in who THEY coach over any hot new coordinator. Remember we've had 2 of those.
There is nothing wrong with one guy beaing the General of the whole team, of course you are going to have a GM that does scouting and the hands on part of brining guys that the HC wants, but not a all-powerful big ego GM that tells the HC who his assistants are going to be and tells the coach what players he is going to get if he likes it or not.

Mike is the perfect fit for this team...perfect.
1. This team plays in cold weather late in the year, this team plays in the AFC north...what is one of the major things we gotta do?
Run the ball.
What has Shannan's teams been known to do?
2. We have the perfect OL to run a zone blocking scheme...what has denver done over the years?
3. We need a coach that has "been there, done that"...not a half baked coordinator that has never been the lead man. Mike has not only been that for so many years, hes won 2 super bowls.
4. This team needs some passion, fire...and identity...Mike brings that...his whole attitude and leadership is something this team is crying out for.
But hey what do I know? I guess nothing...go get Mangini, bring back RAC as DC...i'll see everyone in the same 10 threads in 2 years.
You can keep trying Bill's "yes men" over and over, it will continue to get the same results. As much as Randy wants to copy NE, unless he gets Bill...it will never happen.
Get the man that has done this before, and done it well...its not rocket science.
