Question about "going to failure" and "feeling the burn on your last 2-3 reps". Tony mentions to do that in every exercise.
So I'm doing Chest/Shoulders/Tri's last night. The first few chest exercises I'm going to failure and getting that burn near the end (like both hit the same time). However, as I progress throughout the workout, I hit the failure line before the burn line. Essentially, my chest and arms are like Jell-O. I'm still going to failure but I can't find the burn. Is this normal?
Assistance muscles such as biceps & triceps will give out before larger muscles like chest & back.
That's why when people who hit the weights want to work chest extensively they will do a "pre-exhaust" set of flyes or pec dec prior to bench press because they will get the chest working without hitting the triceps. Once they bench, they still work the tri's but the chest gets a better workout.
This happens to me too on pushups. My tri's & elbows give out before my chest muscles do. When I can't do anymore reps from my pushups stands, I drop to my knees and burn out my reps in girl pushup form.

Week 10, Day 64...the real "magic" should start over the next few weeks with the muscle confusion kicking in full bore.
Did Cardio X this morning with chest, shoulders, tri's and ARX to follow tonight.

Nothing wrong with them at all. I actually like to use them after I've burned out doing my regular pushups.

I know this thread exists but as it gets bigger, I was afraid of being lost in the shuffle. If it needs merged, then so be it. I was hoping to have a little thread for beginners to p90x, like myself. I'm very interested in giving this a go as I could use a change from my current routine if nothing else. Feel like I've hit a plateau. My understanding in p90x is that you need a set of dumbbells and pull up bar. Few questions there: 1) Is a full 'gym' set of dumbbells recommended or can I use those 'block' type where you just have 2 dumbbells and can set the weight? What's the pros/cons of each for this routine? 2) I believe a meal plan is included as well - what is that like? I have done Nutrisystem in the past and currently just try to watch my calorie intake as close as possible. I eat quite a bit of Lean Cuisines now and would like to get off those w/ fresh food. How is the meal plan in this? 3) The routine is for 90 days if I remember correctly. What happens after the 90 days? Do you go back to where you started and keep cycling through or is there some follow up? 4) How much room would you say you need to do the exercises at your home? I have a gym membership, but was actually thinking of canceling it if this can easily be done at home and save those monthly fees. Ok, I think that's what I got so far. Thanks in advance for any advice and help to this p90x noob.

Yeah, the adjustable dumbbells will work fine.

I didn't like it, it was difficult for me to prepare and follow. So I took the concept to heart and do my best to make healthy choices in my own way.

Haven't reached that point, but I think most just take a week off then repeat, or do doubles, and now there is a "P90X Plus" out there.

I still go to the gym, I enjoy it in the morning and it helps me start my day, I often do partial P90X workouts while there, but mostly do cardio stuff.

1. You can use gym dumbbells, block dumbbells or even resistance bands (though a little harder to determine the weight you're using). 2. The program has a book to describe their diet plan but you can follow your own. Leadtheway can help you with a diet plan too (sorry for volunteering you ). I can send you my plan to copy, although it depends on your body goals. 3. Rest for a week and start back up. There are three types of plans too. Classic, Lean and Doubles. You can do all three for 9 months.....heck, there is even a Plus program that has a Classic, Lean and Doubles program........and then there's a possibility of mixing them for your own program too. It's endless. 4. Home is the way to go. I think an area about 10 X 6 is all you need for most of the stuff. And like you said....dumbbells, pull-up bar, yoga mat and block. Some swear by the heart rate monitor's....I don't use one because they're uncomfortable. Do you have the discs? And we promise to not lose you in the shuffle.

Personally I believe that the diet is very easy to follow although I've gone back to the phase I "high protein/low carbs" part of the eating program (I'm on week 10, phase III). I haven't "bonked" yet but you have to watch the sodium content in some of these foods.

no prob punch...yeah if you have any questions..post them here, plenty of people doing it right now..or if you have something specific you can PM me..i usually respond pretty quick. On a program note. I will officially be starting p90x on April 1st again. After going through it several times, and then taking my own workout twist to the gym on a 3 day split. i've added enough mass and ready to bring it to get ripped for summer..I'm really excited. I love doing this program when its warm..i just clear out my garage and plug my DJ equipent in, put Tony and Crew on silent and get it

Welcome to the P90X newbies! When I went through the program the first time I found Plyo and AbRipper to be the hardest workouts. Well, I say that....but I was sore for the first 3-4 weeks easily.
I didn't think the diet was hard to follow - it seemed overwhelming at first, but once I got in the routine, it was pretty simple. You just have to shop differently at the store.
I do my workouts in my basement - you don't need a lot of room and I like not having to go to a gym. Time is limited enough without having to pack stuff for the gym and travel time to and from. I get up early before work (4:30 a.m.) do P90X...it's a great way to start the day. Although I am tired by 10:00 at night which is not typical for me. It's worth it though!!

This is going to be even MORE of a challenge as the weather warms up. I was sweating like crazy doing plyo yesterday and burned 955 calories in roughly 55 minutes. Knocked Cardio X out at 3:45am this morning (burned 753 calories) with back & biceps to go tonight. Still sore as heck from Monday's muscle confusion.

Isn't is crazy to be sore in week 10? I think that just proves the program does what is says. You never plateau. I'm on day 44 of round 2 - PLYO this morning was great as usual - still trying to get lower in all the squat moves. Maybe some day I'll be able to keep up with Dom on Jump Knee Tucks!

Nailed Core tonight and Yoga last night. Man, I sweat more doing Core than any other workout in the program.....Plyo included. Felt very good!
Kenpo is on the schedule tomorrow.......maybe I'll do Interval + Ab Ripper instead.

Guys...as you know, Kenpo is a weak program. After reading what Punch wrote about Core, could I just replace Kenpo with Core (I am still in the first third of the program).
The guys that developed P90X are the pros - what are your opinions on changing it up a bit? I can't wait to do some of the new dvd's after this first group....did any of you add them into your workouts at the beginning?

My suggestion after reading more is just follow the program as is, at least your first go around. As you said, the pros developed this and there's more than likely a reason things are structured the way they are.

Kenpo is too easy and to "kick it up a notch", I bought ankle weights and weighted gloves. It makes a WORLD of difference in intensity.
I was going to buy hand weights but got this horrible visual of the guys on the TV commercial where the one guy throws the Nintendo Wii controller through his plasma TV while playing video baseball.

i just switch out kenpo for kenpo plus...kenpo plus is fun, but yeah if its your first time and you aren't in decent shape..just stick to the program for the first go round. It will help you get a feel for what works and what don't.. You'll learn to understand what intensity is required. After that..get the Plus series and do a cycle of that, and then mix and match your own routine. When i start again in april, i won't be doing classic or plus..i have my own version that seems to keep me off balance work well.

Has anyone looked into Tony's "One on One" DVD's? I was interested in the Fountain of Youth yoga and if it was a shorter yoga workout.
My understanding is that you receive discs monthly on this program but it said on the site that they could be purchased individually for $19.95.

My first time doing the Yoga I got about 30 mins into it, second time I got almost a full hour. Don't be afraid to stop the DVD for a breather, it can make a huge difference. My problem was sweating so much, I was slipping in some positions, so I would have to stop and dry my mat and my arms off.

"Feel good story" of the weekend for me.
I went out to see my mom and sisters (older sister just had a mastectomy) for the first time in a year and a half (I know, I'm a bad son) and when they saw me they were floored by the weight loss.
They said "how much do you weigh" to which I replied "256...I'm down 32 lbs since I started P90X about 11 weeks ago." My sister could tell that I had more chest definition just by seeing me in my shirt. They all said "there's NO way that you weigh 256. You gotta be a lot less than that."
I guess the old adage that "muscle weighs more than fat" IS true. My girlfriend has also been impressed that she can easily get her arms around me when we hug.

Off topic but has anyone tried "Miracle Noodle?" A guy I work with sent me the website (name of the product then a .com...didn't know if I could post a link) and these noodles claim to have no carbs and no calories. I wanted to know if this was legit if anyone had tried it.

Congrats Devil. Excellent work. I'm entering my "rest" week - week #4. Have actually gained a few pounds (from 195 to 200). Probably from this creatine-based supplement I take and the protein shake after the workout. I drink a ton of water every day as well, so my weight bounces around fairly dramatically. Plus, I do not do the diet. Tis alright, as results are noticeable.

Question for you guys on the program for awhile now - are you all noticing substantial results? It's hard to gauge the 'testimonials' on websites but seems like most here are getting noticeable results.

I don't know if 10 weeks completed classifies as "awhile" but I have gone from a size 48 jean to a 36, have dropped 32 lbs and close to 20% drop in bodyfat without significant muscle size lost (which is very important to me).

And you think it's a direct result of doing p90x I assume? I mean, you aren't doing other stuff than what the dvd's have?

I'm following the program to the letter except I'm doing "doubles" which means 3x's per week I do Cardio X at 3:45am. Nothing extra...no running, no walking, no elliptical, no extra weight sessions, nothing. Diet is the key with this program.
AWESOME, just AWESOME !!! Chest and back were unbelievable last night. I doubled the number of regular pushups that I could do from day 1 of this program. I got an incredible burn/pump.
It was like night and day. I felt lethargic going into the workout and the last time I did chest & back (week 9), I improved yet was disappointed. I didn't feel jacked going into this workout but once I started doing pushups I was rockin'.
It's amazing the improvements (in numbers) I've made since day 1. Couldn't do diamonds and now I'm doing sets of 15-18. Can't wait for round 2.

Religiously. I haven't even come close to cheating in 70+ days. I do guarantee that during my one week break between rounds 1 & 2 that I will be hitting Panini's for some wings.

I've pretty much ignored this topic since it was started, but I just took the time and read the entire thing. It sounds very interesting, and I'm thinking about starting it. What do I need to get started?
I have a full basement so room is not a problem. Don't really have anything but a treadmill and a curl bar with weights, and push up bars. I've pretty much been a treadmill guy, arm curls, and push ups and sit-ups.
Diet wise it will be tough I don't eat vegetables, pretty much meat, potatoes, rice, noodles, and pizza. Drinks will be okay, cause I can drink just water. Diet would be the hardest part for me.
After going to doctor last week I weighed 248.8 lbs, and her telling me my blood pressure is 180 over 100, I figured I should start something soon.
Any recommendations, other than going to a gym and using a personal trainer?
7 years ago I weighed 248 and started running. Ran 30 to 45 minutes a day. I ate once a day, 1 box of pasta roni and four pices of bread and butter. Then I drank about 12, 16 oz glasses of water a day. After 2 1/2 months I weighed 201 lbs. I don't think I could do that again.

This program is the real deal.
All you need is a pullup bar and some bands or dumbbells. I'd recommend dumbbells over bands.
That's it! Just follow the DVD's, work at YOUR pace, and you should be golden.
The diet can be tough for people.
If you need anything else, feel free to ask questions of anyone here or pm me if you want. Here to help.

That diet you did previously was very dangerous. You can't just eat once a day. Your body goes into starvation mode and attacks muscle fiber first. It can make your metabolism even worse than it already is. Yes, you can lose weight....but it's not about losing weight as its about losing size and fat (and keeping it that way going forward). Once you're done with the starvation diet, your body will store fat so much faster than before because you have less muscle than before (as you may know, muscle burns more calories at rest than fat). That's why women complain about gaining more weight after they lose a little on a quick diet. Starving does not work!
On this program, you'd need to eat 6-8 times a day. And it really doesn't include a lot of carbs (whole wheat pasta and bread are good for breakfast and lunch).
The DVD's and sleep aren't a problem. Working out is fun for most people and you'll be too tired to skip sleep. It's all about the food.

With P90X you are actually encouraged to eat. I never used to eat breakfast, but since I started the program I eat egg whites, turkey bacon and OJ almost every morning as well as a morning and afternoon snack. I bring healthy choices to work with me like fruit, cottage cheese or yogurt.
I don't have the numbers with me, but the first time I went through the program (last June-Sept) I lost about 12 inches altogether and about 13 pounds.
P90X is the best thing to happen to me as far as getting in shape. I'm female, 44 years young and in the best shape I've been in since I was in my early 20's. If I get brave enough, I may post my b4 and after pics after I finish my second round (currently on day 50).
I highly recommend P90X to anyone serious about getting in shape.
