AT&T U-verse just became available in our development. Anyone switched to AT&T U-verse's services? In particular I would be looking at the TV and internet services.
What I can't find on their site anywhere (and probably just missing it) what is their internet running on? Do they use the existing cable I am running on with Time Warner or do they install new wires/cables?
Thanks!

I just got it right before thanksgiving weekend. And i'm so-so on it..
The service is great....everything works fine. However, couple of things i don't like.
1- You have to pay 10bucks for digital TV.... 2- There is only 1 digital stream.
So if you have 3 TVs in the house...only 1 TV can watch HD. I think thts retarded. i'm paying 10 bucks so 1 tv in my house can get HD? ALSO...they tell you that u can record up to 4 channels at once....BS...if i record 1 HD channel u can't even watch or record another HD channel...
The internet service is OKAY...i use to have time warner 6mbs and now i'm down to 3mbs...so the speed change is expected...i never had time warner 3mb so i dunno how to compare that. Overall it's decent cuz i can browse the net without prb and i can download anything with ease. Also i can play my NCAA on PS3 just fine.
One weird info i'll give u is that all my stuff the cable and internet both go through the phone line...i don't understand it...but thts how it is...he looked around at time warners wires and said it be easier to set me up through the phone wires. I was VERY confused...i also heard time warner was suing them cuz they were using their lines? Also it's not 1080p...it's 1080i...i mean i honestly don't know the difference, all i know is that my TV can show me a better picture(1080p) but i only get 1080i.

I switched 6 months ago and it's alright. I have both TV and Internet with a wireless hub that controls everything. Brownie is right about the HD part. It does get annoying when you are recording multiple things at once b/c it interrupts the other TV's in the house unless you cancel one of the recordings. It's annoying but not a big deal. The Internet works great b/c I am not concerned with speed that much. All I care about is surfing fast and downloading fast and I can do both with ease. Plus my X-BoX 360 works flawless. My laptop connects fast wireless and my desktop is also connected wireless thru their hub which is nice. I believe the Internet is thru the phone line and the TV thru the cable jack that was already here when I moved in. I only have 1 HDTV in the house so I don't know about watching multiple HDTV's, but the picture is very nice. I like the free DVR, it has all the channels I like plus some I had never heard of, there are a bunch of HD channels and sports channels, on-demand, you can look up things using your TV, caller ID on the TV, neat stuff like that. After getting screwed by DirecTV and fighting them to the death I also love that there are NO contracts with AT&T. Time Warner has a great deal for our development and if I ever want to switch I can with no problems. I don't have a reason to though but that was a big selling point after the whole dish debacle. They did screw Yepthebrownsrule out of a referral bonus though for signing me up You can tell them I referred you now too
Our honor defend, we will fight to the end, for OHIO! GO BUCKS!

Thanks for the info guys, I appreciate it.
I have 3 TV's and it's not uncommon for at least 2 of them to be watching HD channels at the same time so that won't work. Just not worth the hassle... lol.
Thanks!!!

From AT&T's website: Quote:
Most households are provisioned with two Standard Definition (SD) streams and two High Definition (HD) streams. This means you can receive four streams simultaneously and up to two of them can be HD. More devices can be in the home, but only two can use the HD stream at the same time.

This is on their site too: Quote:
Four channels can be recorded to the DVR or viewed simultaneously, up to 2 can be HD based on geographic restrictions.
I'm not sure what geographic restrictions would be...
I've been thinking about getting it too. We would have 2 HDTV's and 2 SDTV's...

Just a general FYI...nobody is broadcasting in 1080p currently that I'm aware of. The bandwidth requirements are just too great to support it. 1080i or 720p is as good as you're going to get with broadcast television. 1080p sets will be able to fully utilize BluRay, however.

I was going to say the same AdamP. No one is broadcasting 1080p and no carrier could carry it anyway. I thought I read sometime back that fiber optic (e.g., U-Verse) holds the brightest future relative to delivering the massive amount of data that HD content generates. Dunno?
Relative to quality of HD also consider that there are multiple compression practices. I seem to notice some judder on ESPN that I don't see with other networks sports .
Just a note about DSL. I have had it for years and have few complaints. It has helped to have some tech knowledge to troubleshoot a few issues, but I appreciate AT&T's competitive pricing. TW customers do benefit by not typically being charged for service calls though.

I have a few neighbors who wished they dind't switch esp since the bandwith is far less on both sides up/down esp the up.
The prices seem very competitive until you break it down. I have Cox internet and tv. The pricing is much better pricing (with Cox) when I compared apples to apples rates I think it would have clost me like 27 a month to switch to ATT. I was really annoyed when the rep who was trying to sell me that their service has x number of megabits and theirs was faster. He tried to say well we have (example) 200 megabits and they only have 55. What he didn't know Cox had my prices on my bill was in megabytes. At that moment he dug his own grave, I laughed and I told him to get off my property.

Just a general questionthat doesn't really matter to me because I think it will be a lonnnnnnng time until Uverse is offered where I am at.
I was just trying to understand why ATT&T is bringing cable data via fiber optic lines but then is bringing their DSL service over standard phone lines.

I just got it at the beginning of the year. It saved me over 60/month.
I got the fastest download, most channels, phone, and a regular phone line too. I also have static IP's, which is why I waited this long to switch as they just started offering it.
I can watch 2 HD streams, and record 2 HD channels or 4 regular broadcasts at once. I also LOVE the whole house DVR - I can record downstairs and then watch on any TV in the house.
The only thing that annoyed me thus far is that the HDMI output on the cable box is very flaky and it ONLY sends a stereo signal. That is pathetic - no Dolby digital until you switch over to one of the other outputs (I'm using optical currently). I'm using component for the video, which I also dislike. The installed assured me that they are working on a fix and will be distributing new boxes at the end of February. They will also have a 320gb hard drive for the DVR.

Thinking about the AT&T Uverse thing again as my Time Warner internet has been having some 'issues' recently...
Any other feedback on this service now? Are you still limited to how many TVs can watch HD? I have 3 TVs that are easily watching TV at the same time, so would like to keep watching in HD on all of those if possible.
Also - how reliable is the internet?

The one that I am holding out for is Verizon's FiOS service. I will drop everything else in a heartbeat for their service... the internet speeds are ridiculous (a.k.a. on par with the rest of the world, not the weak-ass internet we have here in the US).

I have had U-Verse for some time now and I absolutely love it. I can say that I have had no issues DVRing an HD show...watching another HD and then having another standard def TV watching in another room. I have never really counted how many things were going on at once because honestly....it has never been an issue...I would like to see an expanded HD lineup...particularly BBC America HD (need to get my Top Gear in HD...LOL) But what they have thus far is great for the price........The biggest issue I have is that I may be moving and I know it is not offered to where I am moving to....LOL
I thought I was wrong once....but I was mistaken...

I like UVERSE the best of all services I've had so far (time warner, insight are the others). I do have a slight issue with one TV that's behind about 3-4 splitters, the DVR will stutter on occasion. Other than that, my internet uptime is significanltly better and I have no problem watching recording multiple HD streams. I like my down/up quite a bit too (though it's a little slower than normal...could be my work VPN eating my available bandwidth though).

I've been on their chat this morning and I'm seriously considering making the switch. I have time warner now and here's my beef ...
1) The rate is always changing b/c I'm not 'new' and have to constantly call in to see if I can get a better rate. Today I got my bill lowered by $30. But I have to do this all the time and it's annoying.
2) My TW internet is usually reliable but lately getting some hangups on it.
So in checking out Uverse, I can basically lower my bill for the same stuff or get better stuff for what I am paying now. AND have a steady bill every month (at least until they decide to become a standard cable company and adjust your rate every month).
The U-verse lineup is very nice - it even includes the NFL network!!! I haven't had that since Adelphia was out here.
And as for watching multiple HD streams at the same time, that appears to have been fixed b/c according to their rep you can watch as many HD streams at the same time as you want.
------
As for Verizon, I would jump on that in a hearbeat as well, but who knows when that might show up in my area.... could be a long wait.

I had all the pricing that UVerse is offering. Not just a 'discount me or might switch' thing. I was serious about leaving. I had UVerse pricing down to the penny and running side-by-side to TW.
Maybe I just got lucky on the rep that answered.
Regardless, if UVerse is in your area, check it out.

No problem with uverse....
and one bonus that has been unstated.
I run Windows media center to the home stereo. I tried running wireless, but could not get a good connection even through a Wireless N connection.
The Uverse cable box has an ethernet connection and is an IP address on your network. I run media center to my stereo at hardwire speed as there is no difference between the RG-6 cable and ethernet.
So my computer media center plays through the cable modems, to the home stereo media center.
The UVerse modem has wireless G built in.
Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!

Alright, here's the specs for those interested. I went into the Mentor AT&T store today to make sure I understood how this worked. Glad I did. 1) Uverse is an internet based TV service. It's NOT cable. 2) As a result, they have to limit how much stuff you get b/c of bandwidth issues. 3) If you have multiple TVs that run at the same time, this could be an issue. Here's how it works: > They give you 4 'streams' of TV service to use, 2 of which are HD. > At any given point, the most you can be running is these 4 streams and 2 of those are HD. > Potential conflicts could arise depending on the TV viewing at your household. For example, in my household it's very common for the main room TV to be recording 2 HD shows at once while 1-2 other TVs are being used. We seem to all watch TV at the same time here. So while my main TV is recording 2 HD stations, everyone else is out of luck for HD on their TV. And from there, 2 regular streams remain meaning neither of the remaining TV sets can watch HD or record a show. With the limit of internet TV, they currently have to cap your usage to monitor bandwidth. I understand why, but it won't work for me at all. So if you have multiple TVs that watch and/or record shows at the same time, you could run into an issue here. If you have 1-2 TVs, it could work. If it could work, I would take this in a hearbeat over TimeWarner. The layout, design, etc. of the software is very modern and slick. And it's cheaper than TW. But w/ TW, I can record/watch 2 HD stations per TV in the house at the same time, which means I can be recording/watching 6 HD streams at once. And no issues in the house of 'whose night is it to use the HD stream'....

I love Uverse. You still can't watch more the 4 total shows at one time or more than 2 HD channels at one time if that's a big deal, but service for internet and TV has been great. They also changed recently so you can record from any TV in your house instead of just the main cable box. You can watch any recorded show from any TV in the house that has an ATT box. As for the internet - I rarely lose my wireless connection. Maybe once every 2 weeks at the most...

Two things... you might need an update that didn't come down automagicly. You might be too far from the connection point, and therefore don't get the bandwidth other people do, which limits you to 1 HD stream. Only way to find out is to call and ask.
I had U-verse for about 2 years or so. I liked it a lot. It was definitely the best TV service I had compared to the others in both picture quality and price. I dropped it only because I realized most everything I watch I can get over the air, and in better quality, for free or online for free. With my PC's using Media Center and working as a DVR there's very little I'm missing and have an extra 70 bucks in my pocket each month....

According to what I was told, you should be able to watch/record up to 2 HD streams at the same time w/ the current service. As the other post suggest, you might need an update and/or new receiver to get this.

Also - make sure UVerse is even offered where you live. If you call up saying you will switch or else and TW knows you can't get UVerse, might not be the best ploy to lower your bill.
Another suggestion - ask them to detail what you are paying for on your bill. I did remove some HD 'extra' tier thing that included 5 or so extra HD stations that I never watched (or even knew they existed) but I was apparently paying for it.
So find out if UVerse is offered and also have them explain what you are paying for on your TW bill. I currently have home phone service through them but may be scrapping that since we don't use it much. That will save another $30+/mo.

I have looked into FiOS from Verizon as well. Too bad I live in Columbus. AT&T owns everything in central Ohio so Verizon cannot get a foothold here. Will be a long time if ever here. I think you can get up to 18MB/s speed from U-verse and I think FiOS offers up to 25MB/s or something along those lines. I want either or. But I also want the Optical lines put in and not run on the old copper. Maybe even talk the tech into going optical from the pole to the home. Bahh!!! Info overload.......
Anywhoos, to the OP. Check out dslreports.com There have alot of info in their forum threads about all of this.

Old thread, but looking in to switching from TW to U-Verse. Anything new since this thread was posted?
My main concern, and I can't find the answer anywhere, is if we can get FoxSports Ohio in HD to watch the Reds. I'll call them later today to get my answer, but if we can, is there any reason NOT to go with AT&T?

Thanks, Pete. I also can't tell if I'll get STO in Dayton. Looks like it's one of their national channels if you're out of the state and only available in northern Ohio if in-state. Again, on my call list.

Assuming they still cap how many HD streams you can get, there is a most definite reason to not touch this (yet). Depends on how many HD streams you need simultaneously.

Last I was aware of it was capped at watching or recording one HD stream at a time? Maybe its two HD streams simultaneously now. I don't really pay attention to U-Verse since its not compatible with my TiVo HD units.

When I looked into it (see when this thread was started) they were advertising 2 HD streams at the same time. I am in NE Ohio.

As has already been mentioned, call them. You either missed on an update or you are too far to get the bandwidth necessary. Only one way to know for sure. I had 2 hd streams with u-verse in cbus.

I have 2 HD streams...but I understand that it will eventually grow to 4...don't know when though...
I thought I was wrong once....but I was mistaken...
What's the use of wearing your lucky rocketship underpants if nobody wants to see them????

U-Verse is awesome. I nearly crapped my pants when I saw I got STO (out here in San Diego). And I've found it's cheaper than anything else out there.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.
