Ever pull up behind a car and see a Ron Marhoffer or a Fred Martin name plate or sticker affixed to the rear of the car in front of you?
We are about to buy a car used (but it doesn't matter if it's new) in the next week or so, and I got to thinking.
They are getting free advertising by sticking their name plate or sticker on the back of your car. I am thinking if they want me to drive around town promoting their car company by letting every person that pulls up behind me read their name I should get paid to do it.
Would the Browns let National City put their name up at one of the gates for everybody to see for free. I think not. So why should I let a car company advertise on my car for nothing.
When I go into negotiations for our car, I am going to say knock 500 bucks off the price off the car or take your name off of my car.
It's fair isn't it. They pay for advertising in the paper and tv. Why should I let them advertise on the back of my car for free?
You want me to put your name out there, you knock some cost off the car or get your name off of it. Sounds legit to me. What's your thoughts?
How in the world can you fix something... If you don't know how it's supposed to work?

License plate frames and stickers come off easy...
I don't mind the advertising. I just take it off because it's ugly...

I'm saying at the time of sale, knock some money off or take your name off before I drive away from the lot. I'm sure they will take the name off before they give me a discount.
If they pay for advertising elsewhere, you have to compensate me to do the same.

All you have to do is take it off of the vehicle after your purchase if you don't want it on there......that's what I have done in the past.
As for my current ride, I left it on there this time as I purchased the car from a friend......I doubt that it throws him any business but if it does then that's a good thing.
Not a big deal to take off..........

lol.. I'm the same way...
I hate seeing that on people's cars. Free advertising.. I don't think so...
You can ask the dealer to take it off, they don't mind... or you can take it off yourself.

I wouldn't. Sometimes life just isn't worth the hassle. Yes it is free advertising, but they're betting you don't remove the sticker. They're not gong to discount an item that isn't itemized on the window sticker,.... I remove them when they are plain butt ugly. Otherwise, they are an indicator that you bought the car THERE when you take it in for service,... just another angle. Take it off later, my friend.

I actually tried that very thing with Serpentini when we bought my wifes Blazer in 07...
They wouldn't take it off.. its kinda tough to remove that sticker type thing on the back hatch. They also wouldn't remove any dollars for the advertizing.
I didn't argue... I got it home, bought a package of plastic razor blades that a detailer friend of mine uses.. and took the sticker off..
It was funny,, when I first took the truck in for service, the service guy actually noticed it was gone... they put another one on while they were working on my call... LOL I took it off and told them not to do it again without paying me..
I no longer have the sticker..
I happen to agree with you but honestly, I don't think it's a big deal, more of an annoyance really.

They are so desperate right now, they'd probably take the sticker off and give you 500.00 for upsetting you in the first place.
I agree with you, they shouldn't impose on you like that.

When I got my Intrepid @ Ganley a few years back I told them that exact thing - take money off or take the sticker off - or I am buying my car somewhere else.
They took the sticker off no questions.
Just let the salesperson know when you are getting close to buy (and he can see the commission) that's the deal - no sticker or $ off. And if they won't do it, there are dealers that will.

Oooo, you company man!
There were NO stickers or ANYTHING on my vette when I picked it up (except a big ol' scratch on the hood from the wash boy - I truely believe that Corvettes should NOT be sold out of the chevy dealerships but should come out of the Cadillac dealerships).
When we bought our '84 Camaro brand new I told the dealership that I didn't want any of their stickers or stuff on it.....but it was there. I had to use a hair dryer and thumb power to get the damned thing off.

Wow...that's way over the line. I don't blame them for wanting one on at sale, but to reapply one when you bring it in for service is way over the line.

It probably was over the line a bit but mostly, it's meaningless at the moment.
People aren't buying many cars at all or so we are told. So advertising on backs of cars,,, hey, if it helps get the economy moving again, I really think it might be better to leave it on. If I had it to do over, I'd not even give it another thought..
I'm not a fan of serpentini chevy in Aurora.. don't know how his other dealerships operate but this these guys can be pretty damn odd..
But not everyone up there are bad people.. in fact, I dare say most are good folks and I don't want to see anyone lose thier jobs.. not today anyway. so I hope they become more successful in selling cars....

I sold a lot of cars in my 12+ years in the business ...... and probably had 30 customers ask me to have the sticker and/or plate frame either not put on, or removed.
Many of those same people bought additional vehicles from me later on, and didn't ask for either to be removed.
I actually had one guy who had a major issue with his vehicle that caused it to be replaced under the lemon law. We worked on that case for months, and got it resolved for him. I got the extra sale out of the deal ..... and the guy was so happy he said I could I could put plate frames front and back along with the sticker, and put my name on the car if I wanted. LOL
I often found that people who are treated fairly don't mind advertising for the dealership, and send in referrals to boot. Those treated unfairly (their perception) will not want to do either.

Saturn of Dayton put a frame around my rear plate...I took it off in the lot, put my plain one on, and gave it back to them. I saved them $.50 cents. Where's my credit??

When I bought my last truck, that's exactly what I told them with all their badging.
I said: "We've finalized the deal, but I have a problem. See the badging and plates that have your name on'em? What are you going to give me to keep'em on there?" The answer was that their policy didn't allow them to haggle over such a topic, so I told them I wouldn't sign the paperwork until the plates were replaced with blanks, and the chrome dealer badging was removed from the back to the point where I saw no residual that it had ever been there. They jammed up the paint when removing the badging, so I forced them to repaint the entire tailgate. Of course they said they wouldn't, at which time I stood up, called my brother to come back and pick me up, and walked out into the parking lot. Twenty minutes later they had the gate being painted.
I have no qualms with a dealership making money. I have a couple of buds that own dealerships, so they let me know within about a hundred bucks how much money I'm giving to a dealership in profit. However, I won't let them make money off of me AND give them free advertisement.
It can't hurt to see if you can't get some free pieces of trim, badging, or other things from the item shop for keeping that advertising on their. They can write that off so that the sales of the car looks better.

I hear ya Toad,,, But today, there isn't a car dealer around here anyway that isn't crying the blues.... We even have a Kia dealer advertising,, buy one new Kia, get a second one free! Spitzer Auto Group advertised several weeks ago that thay have Brand new cars with the sticker priced cut in half. While in years gone by, I have made a point of this issue,, I guess I'm a soft touch today. I hope they all can survivie the horrendous market conditions. I guess I'm a kinder, gentler consumer today than at any time in my life.

I told Honda of Mentor that if they put a badge on my brand new car I would be extremely mad and would walk. The guy assured me "ohhh no we wouldn't do that" If they want to give you a license plate frame, ok whatever. That's one thing. But if they stick a metal/plastic badge or sticker on your car that is something else. If Honda doesn't put it on after it leaves the factory floor then I don't want it on my ride. A buddy of mine scratched his paint taking off a metal Rick Case badge from his 1 year old car he bought used. And daman, if they stuck another sticker on your car after you took ownership of it, I would do more than laugh man That's messed up!

I don't mind the stickers so much on a used car, but on a new one it burns me up. Luckily there are enough dealers in this area that don't have stickers and it affords me the chance to tell the others where to stick it.

Most cars I've seen have the license plate frame with dealer logos, not many name badges or stickers, I sure hope people are paying attention to the road and not the little sticker on my car.

I would think it would work just fine. I'm guessing 95% of dealers would probably just remove it like he's asking ... the 5% who don't would probably do it the second you started walking away cause they didn't drop the price $500.
And whoever mentioned Serpentini ... I've heard so many horror stories about this dealership from just THIS BOARD, that there's no way I'd every buy a car from them. How the heck do people still go there?? I mean his name has SERPENT in it!!

I had no trouble having them take the sticker off when I bought my Mustang 3 years ago.
I said "I don't want a pinstripe and I don't want your dealership sticker. Your free to put a license plate frame on for advertising, but no sticker."

The last car My Pops ever bought (1979 Ford Thunderbird) had the dealer's logo on it when it was delivered. His deal: "lose the logo, or lose a sale."
One day later, he was driving around town with a logo-free T-bird.

Thats the trick. You have to work it into the deal. I don't give a flip about the advertising but I see it as a potential dirt collector and rust starter. I was surprised when they flat out refused to remove the script Spitzer tag.I wasn't smart enough to hold the deal hostage because I didn't think it would be an issue. Don't forget, At Spitzer they're world revolves around you!

I just want to address the "pay me to advertise" thought ..... Why would a dealer "pay" you when you could easily go home ..... take the sticker/plate frame/strobe lights/glow in the dark static stickers off the vehicle? It's not gonna happen. There would be no accountability on the customer's part, and no dealer is going to demand that a customer bring their car in for a routine sticker inspection. Most people will allow something on their car if they like the dealership and salesperson ..... and they feel that they were treated fairly.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

The dealership that I bought my car from allows you to use the automatic car wash free of charge as long as you have the car if you have the dealership sticker on the car. Heck of a deal because those usually cost over $5 a pop. Plus the sticker isn't even hardly noticeable.

LOL....I see your point and understand where your coming from, but understand your a small, very small piece of thier advertising and not worth extra money, Yes I know your a customer and the customer is # 1 and you could have gone elsehwere, but hopefully your car deal wasnt based on the final say being money off for free adversiting. Plastic Plate rims covers, or magnates on the back of the car are small and if you leave it thier great, if not they dont lose anything from it. I joking told the car deal I got my last truck from that I'd leave the plate cover on for a free oil change in 6 months, he laughted and agreed, so I got a free oil change out of it. Sometimes you can get something small in return but dont approch it as a demand, just ask jokingly and see what happens.

This would chap my butt big time. It's no different than if they put a bumper sticker of some sort on there. At this point, they're technically vandalizing your vehicle.
I've never had a dealer not take the sticker off the vehicle for me. Most dealers won't let that be the reason they don't make a sale.

j/c.
You are right - in fact, I can't imagine a dealer that would let his sticker be the "go, no go" on a car sale.
However, for all the bravado being shown in this thread - for all the "I demand $500 off" for a sticker - how many of you loyal car buyers take the car back to the selling dealer for warranty work?
Why? LIke it or not, dealerships will go a tad further in the service dept. if they know the car came from them in the first place. You don't need to like it. You don't need to admit it. But it's true.

That may be true at a majority of the dealerships. I wish it was down here. I don't take my car (2002 Nissan) to the dealer unless there is a recall or something. Of course the dealership I bought our car from (Morrison) got sold and is now owned by a different guy (Niles). So we don't get that same level for some reason. I just take it to my neighbor's car shop. He takes care of me better.

I wouldn't demand 500 off the price or you take the sticker off. I know there's no way they would take 500 off. But I would make them take the sticker off. Like I said when I started this topic, they pay for ads in the paper, they pay for ads on t.v. why shouldn't they pay me for an ad on my car? If not, take it off. It would be pretty sweet if I could somehow get the 500 off though.

If you want them to take it off, and you ask in a proper manner, I'm sure they will take it off. If you demand $500 off the price, my guess is they'd tell you to take a hike. I know I would've done either when I was in the business - take it off, or tell you to take off if you wanted $500.
And further more, the "stickers" they use come off almost too easily with a hair dryer and a thumb nail. How do you think the dealerships take off the decals from other dealerships when they take in a trade in? It's not rocket science here.

I usually remove any such advertising, particularly new vehicles since I am not loyal to any dealership.
