What we also have to take into account is what they’re being asked to do.
By "they" I think this comment is about more than Lewis.. If I had to guess what he means, it is don't judge everything by the stats... Essentially if they were doing what they were asked to do, then we'll give them credit for that, even if what they were asked to do didn't work.

Pluto's take...
Terry Pluto: Impressions from Mangini's Wednesday press conference by Terry Pluto/Plain Dealer Columnist Wednesday February 04, 2009, 6:26 PM
BEREA --- Things on my mind while listening to Eric Mangini's press conference...
1. I hope he sticks to his plans of having a very flexible 3-4 defense, where there can be three, four, even five players on the line in certain situations. He mentioned the creativity of the Ryan family when it comes to defense, and it was a smart move to hire Rob Ryan. The Browns played an utterly passive and predictable 3-4 last season.
2. I asked him directly what players impressed on film, and the new Browns coach first mentioned D'Qwell Jackson. To be clear, he earlier praised Shaun Rogers for being a 360-pound monster in the middle of the defensive line. He also said he didn't know he and Rogers were at the same banquet last month, that was why there was no contact. I tend to believe Mangini because it's just dumb to know one your best players is in the room, and then intentionally not talk to him.
3. Back to Jackson, Mangini mentioned how the inside linebacker appeared "in every frame" of film, meaning he was around the ball often. Former GM Phil Savage believes Jackson will be very effective if he plays next to a quicker linebacker. He was paired with Andra Davis. Yes, Savage traded up and drafted Jackson, so he had reason to back the third-year player from Maryland. But Mangini clearly is impressed with Jackson, who did lead the NFL in tackles. New Browns coach Eric Mangini said he was impressed by the performance of linebacker D'Qwell Jackson, who led the NFL in tackles in 2008.
4. Mangini respects Willie McGinest, but gave no hint to the veteran's future. Let's face it, McGinest and Davis were two of the slowest starting linebackers in the NFL -- and it was not wise to have them on the field at the same time.
5. I'm kicking myself for not asking him about Kamerion Wimbley. No one else did, either. Maybe Rob Ryan can figure out a creative way to get this young man back to the linebacker who had 11 sacks in 2006.
6. Mangini talked about a "Must Have" position, meaning they must find someone to play a key position. When he took over the Jets, he said one of the "Must Have" spots was center. He declined to say what it would be for the Browns. But linebacker has to be one of those, if he plans to stop the run -- which he listed as a top priority for the defense.
7. Mangini also praised Jamal Lewis for "toughness." I expect Mangini will combine Lewis with some younger running backs (hopefully Jerome Harrison) to give opposing defenses different looks. Lewis may not be the guy to carry the ball 20 times a game anymore, but he still can be effective 10 to 15 times, and then use Harrison and even Josh Cribbs in the backfield.
8. Mangini was very excited to be coaching Cribbs. I just wonder how Cribbs will be used. Several NFL people outside the Browns organization told me the Browns new special teams coach (Brad Seely) is one of the best around.
9. Mangini said nothing of substance about the QBs, and I didn't think he would.(Tell Grossi That) There are some complicated issues to be worked out -- Who starts? Do you keep both? Can one bring more in a trade than another? I'm sure he is developing a plan, but it makes little sense to discuss it in any detail.(Tell Grossi That Too)
10. I got lost in the discussion about the Hall of Fame murals. Apparently they will be moved to the lobby. They were not painted over, they were taken off the walls near the dressing room. It is amazing how the team falls into this PR pothole and doesn't understand how the fans love the history of the team -- especially there has been so little to like since 1990. (Old news...It was moved to a higher traffic area...What's wrong with that?)
Go Browns!!!

To U and DC...my thoughts are that Lewis/Harrison isn't enough..Lewis can't carry it 16 games 20-25 times each game..
Harrison while being a change of pace isn't a guy who's going to get it 15 times either..that spots needs a upgrade..there are several big backs in the draft..
Now as far as what they're asked to do...Wimbley would benefit from being stood up and moved around..and that should be the case with any pass rusher we bring in... U can't run behind guys with legs stuck in mud..clearly we need another road grater at OG..even if Tucker is healthy..he won't last 16 games much less preseason..I keep saying they need to move Hadnot(Isnot a guard) to center.. Sean Jones..well after 3 years watching him and Pool..something needs to be done..both together are inconsistant... BTW lets keep a eye on the Vikes.....I heard sumptin about them...

"I have been so hopeful that I have sometimes lost perspective. Now I have to be realistic."
Sorry, but you can blow that out of where the sun don't shine
I see Optomistic and you lose perspective...Pessimistic and you are realistic.

I ain't buying. I got my feet firm on the ground.
Mangini is more than just a fan.
He is the first HC with experience that we are getting in Cleveland Since...Oh gosh who knows??? but its ages ago. The last coach with a winning record before Marty I think is the guy!
But he's just a fan. 2 out 3 seasons he has had a winning season. We have had two out of the last 10.
The fact of the matter with Kokinis....after hiring a consultant to look for a GM - the Falcons were given a short list of the best of the best. Kokinis was on that short list.
The fact that Mangini and Kokinis are on the same page makes that choice even better. But Kokinis could have held his own and actually did - Prior to Mangini requesting him as his GM of choice!
How you can make that into a negative and then stand there and PRETEND to be a Realist. Sorry go sell it to someone a heck of lot more stupid than I. Actually thats probable the most UNREALISTIC statement on this subject matter. Unbelievable you trying to sell your garbage as REAL and what I and others bring to the table as "LOST PERSPECTIVE" -
"SOmeone that will tell him the story."
And just who is that someone...You
And just what makes you think he did not have anyone advising him.
JMHO not LOST PERSPECTIVE
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!

lol, just call yourself Todd Porter and print it in the newspaper. I hear you don't need to cite sources or anything there.

For a brief moment there, that was better than sex.
